I gave a history of sexual trauma and this is listed on my chart. This appointment has re-traumatized me after years of working to heal. Doctors there laughed at this practice diagnosis. Cancer antigen is high due to having fibroids and cysts. Fibroids are not a cancer and neither are cysts. The MD Anderson gyno that examined me felt the fibroid by hand and told me it is not a tumor, it is soft and movable. Still I got an MRI to confirm. Read Bowers' reviews on Google, what I went through is nothing compared to other women. Also they don't know how to bill insurance. P.S. I still have my whole reproductive system intact, had fibroids and cyst removed via laparoscopic surgery by a fabulous skilled surgeon in Houston. If I had listened to Bowers I would have been in early menopause.

So, you have to pick your poison. Or maybe enough women telling him we don't like his unnecessarily strict, critical stance could influence the way he relates to patients? One can dare to hope. Context: I moved to Charlottesville about two months ago and began asking for recommendations for a good ob/gyn. Edward Wolanski was a name that kept coming up. Friends and friends-of-friends recommended him because they said he tends to be low intervention - he serves as the back-up for a midwife, which is rare and usually indicates an appreciation for a natural approach to childbirth. The one nuance to all the glowing reviews was that he could be brusque and unnecessarily strict about weight, having once told a patient, "We don't want a chubby Christa!" (Except he used her name, of course.) I took this info with a grain of salt, but sure enough, during our consultation visit, one of the first things Wolanski brought up was his recommendation that pregnant women should only gain 20-25 pounds during a pregnancy: this goes against the medically recognized guideline of 25-35 pounds for women who, like me, are in a healthy weight range at the start of pregnancy. I questioned whether his adapted guidelines set up potentially harmful expectations for women who have struggled with eating disorders, and he actually responded, "I've had many patients who have dealt with anorexia, and they tend to do quite well during pregnancy because they watch what they eat." Uh, yeah, that's what anorexics do, but I think our definition of "doing quite well" are not the same. That's the bad news. The worse news is that Wolanski may still be the best (only??) ob/gyn in Charlottesville for women like me, who value a low-intervention approach to childbirth. In the past week, I've researched ob/gyns in Cville like it's my job, and while Martha Jefferson Hospital is more advanced in terms of holistic care of mama + baby, I have yet to find another ob/gyn practice that is recommended for being accepting of a more natural approach to childbirth. But because this practice is the only OB/GYN in Culpeper I scheduled an appointment out of the convenience. One the phone they told me that when I come in they would like a credit card on file for "my convenience". I was told I would get an email and never did. So I looked up to see if I could find information about this online. On their website they state "If you do not have a credit card or debit card, or you do not wish to participate in this program, then you will need to pay for the estimated cost of your deductible and co-pay at the time of your visit with cash or check.". I show up for my appointment and I am greeted by name by Patty. Which is surprising since it has been about 3 years since I have been in there She gives me the new paperwork to sign and tells me about their "MANDATORY" policy to have a credit card on file. That they will be able to charge up to $75.00 and will notify you if they have to charge more than $75.00. So I tell her I am a stay at home mother, haven't worked for years and do not have a credit card in my name. She says she will talk to someone about it so I step out to call my husband. When I come back in, she asks me what I decided. Here I thought she was going to talk to someone about seeing me without the credit card. I told her I have my insurance (which is a great policy) and I have my copay in cash. So I asked if they were going to see me and she repeated that unless I have a credit card they won't see me. I left the office without being seen. It's amazing that a practice who has dealt with a patient for two high risk pregnancies, a patient with great insurance and the money to pay their co-pay is kicked out of the office because they want a credit card on file. While talking to her she repeated the word "mandatory" over a dozen times. Verbally they will repeat it's mandatory but not show any documentation in writing using that word. Their own website doesn't say mandatory, the form they gave to fill out did not say mandatory and the mysterious email they were going to email me that included the mandatory never showed up in my inbox. We live in a world where hackers are getting information just by you making a purchase at Target. But sure let me write my credit card information on a paper for you to leave where you want to and charge when you want to. No I pass. As I am sure many other responsible patients of that practice will. So what happens to the low income person who is on medicad? Clearly if a woman is on medicad she doesn't have credit. Do they refuse to see and treat those women? I think it's time for a new OB/GYN to put a practice in Culpeper. Let's see how "mandatory" their credit card policy is when they have competition.

I found out that instead at Mary Washington Hospital that I had a ruptured SCH. It was relief to know our baby was okay, but then a team of doctors came into the room to tell us we had a Cornual Pregnancy and should see a doctor to discuss terminating the pregnancy. The hospital gave us a DVD of our ultrasound there to show the doctor we would be seeing. When we went to Dr. Godfrey he reviewed the information from the hospital and then said he wanted to perform his own ultrasound to see what is going on. He told us the hospital was wrong. The pregnancy continued and we went onto have a healthy baby girl. Recently I had a horrible experience at UVA OBGYN because sadly, Dr. Godfrey is no longer delivering babies. I had a traumatic miscarriage and hated the care I was getting at UVA OBGYN that we contacted Dr. Godfrey's office and they were willing to take care of my followup care. Dr. Godfrey took time to look over all the notes from my miscarriage and the ultrasound prior to my miscarriage and spent a good amount of time talking with my husband and I. He also told us when we are ready to start trying again that he would be willing to see me right away to make sure everything is going well.

He is a great listener, with a great bedside manner, his old office team (nurses and admin) were also the best - they were caring, always smiling, and warm - always jokes and laughs giving good energy in the office. This is no reflection on his new team but I honestly cannot speak about the current team bc I moved out of town and have not had the opportunity to engage with them. I was Dr. Kacedan's patient for 5+ yrs. The Bottom Line Up Front is He Cares!!! He has always been supportive, timely, willing to research, willing to address any questions, helpful when trying to determine the best path forward, and he has been accommodating to take a call even after I moved - A 5 ***** Star Doctor in my book!!!
