She was treating our mini pin for diabetes. Brought her in because she was not doing well. She didn't even examine her and said oh must have virus going around. Gave her meds and a day later dog collapsed. Went to emergency vet and they were furious because she gave a diabetic dog a med they should never have and it killed her. read more

Warning: vet deletes critical reviews everywhere else especially google. Do not let them trick you. This place is super suspicious. Looks like someone's house with a wooden table in the back room to cut your dog open on. Needed a vet to have my dog spayed, this was the only place with openings and now I know why. Went for our consultation and instantly got red flags but brushed them off. My small 30lb 20" tall runt Pup (10 months) has anxiety issues and is vet shy. When I said I'd like her spayed vet said "yeah wouldn't want HER to breed..." which felt super disrespectful and unprofessional to say to me about my dog. The spay was gonna end up being in the upper 400's for a small dog. Took her back for her spay that I waited two months at least for (1 month after consultation), since she's anxious they gave her some sedatives while I was there. Vet techs told me they may keep her overnight if she's not too distraught (she has non destructive separation anxiety) and will call me if need be. I left with a bad feeling like I'd never see my best friend alive again. Hours later I don't hear anything but just brushed it off thinking "well she must be doing ok and just sleeping". Next morning (today) I get down there and all of the vet techs are twiddling their thumbs waiting for me, they say "we couldn't preform the spay". I say "oh no what happened?", one of them (the only one that speaks to anyone) tells me my dog is too difficult to handle... then when I ask about the sedative they say "well there was a death in the family" who's family? Didn't get a straight answer. I feel like as a doctor, you have an obligation to a patient that's already been put "under". If they weren't doing surgeries due to a family death, I don't know why they had two more dogs in cages either recovering or getting ready to be operated on. Apparently, my dog was calm enough for them to grab her by the collar, hook on her leash, and take her out to potty. Does that sound like an uncontrollable dog? Something doesn't add up. My old vet in Florida was able to handle my aunt's unsocialized 80lb aggressive lab, but these people can't handle a scared, 30lb pup. When they opened the door to let her back inside, she was not aggressive or hyper one bit and came straight to me, whining. How can my dog be hard to control when I literally watched them pump her full of sedatives? Isn't she asleep during surgery? They claimed they tried to call me but they used the wrong phone number. There's a 9 in my number that they read as a 7. Despite my "Artist's handwriting" the "9" was pretty unmistakable if you paid attention. They also claimed to try and contact me through FB but why not just take a second look at my number and maybe try a "9"? I had also given them my number previously and it was correct that time. Why was my number not in their computer system? My dog was put outside presumably all night in the freezing mountain weather. Even this morning it was cold enough for me to wear my coat. My dog is half Doberman and can't handle cold weather at all. Vet had other dogs inside in cages but they must've hated my dog so much they put her out in the cold. These girls said they fed my dog but when she got home, she was eating anything she could find when normally she has a light appetite. Owner has a history of replying passive aggressively to these reviews and they'll probably slander me and my dog. Honestly I'm thankful to God, these people decided to not operate because they probably would've removed her liver trying to perform a spay. Never coming back. They obviously had something against me or most likely my dog. But I'm just thankful my girl is cuddling with me as I type this and not in the ground. This place has to be a front because I refuse to believe a true vet would let all this go on. read more

I'm sorry to the vet that I didn't know had stayed local just left his situation, but 23 years and 9 animals later I'm forever grateful to have found Dr. Gail Hoyme. Just recently she and her crew were able to get my 108lb boy to lay, tongue lolling and tail wagging happily while they clipped his claws. A feat that takes drugs and drama to accomplish at home. I also greatly appreciate her making sure our animals receive the best care even if that's finding a different specialist. Could not recommend her place more! read more

Horrible Vet. Blue Ridge Veterinary Clinic- 106 Clubhouse drive -Banner Elk, First Gail quoted me $400 to remove a lump and do a dental clean in December 2018, so we tried 2 rounds of antibiotics 1st, that did not remove the lump, so Gail recommended surgery. So in January 2019, i had saved up the $ and we did the surgery. Gail tried to tell me when i went to pick my dog up that prices had gone up since August, that the quote she had given me was wrong. I then told her she saw my dog in December and that was the quote she gave me for the total cost. It ended up being $480. Gail did a horrible job on the stitching after surgery on my dog. I had to bring him back the next day because the wound was completely open. Gail had to put him under again because of her horrible job to fix it. Then she charged me for antibiotics since the wound had been open for so long. Then proceeds to tell me the surgery was not needed after I was told to get the surgery if the antibiotics wouldn't make the lump go away. Told me she would call the cops if i did not pay for antibiotics and that my dog could just fend for himself without them even though it was her fault the wound was open. I paid her $480 dollars the day before and she would not wait 2 weeks til my next paycheck to pay her for the $56 antibiotics, she claimed was cost that my dog now needed because of her shitty job stitching the wound the previous day. She then proceeded to tell me about she has to pay $20,000 for bills and such, which has nothing to do with me, my dog or her incompetent skills. I had to call my parents to give a credit card over phone. Then as i walked out the door Gail yells "now don't go home and kill yourself." I just continued to walk out the door silently. I have never been treated so rude and disrespectful. I will never go back. Do yourself, your wallet and your dog a favor and go to a different vet that cares and doesn't try and overcharge you and tell you to get surgery , then after they mess up tell you it is your fault that the surgery was not needed. I would like to preface this review by saying that I in no way experienced this vet mistreat either of my animals. I do believe that she loves animals and wants to see they get treatment considered right by her standards. With that being said I will share my personal experience and some observations I took along the way. Some preface to my experience: I chose this vet due to the raving 5 star reviews and overall good experiences listed. Upon arrival I was encouraged to come in and get paperwork filled out, normal new vet stuff. It was like walking into a sauna, soooo hot and stuffy I instantly felt bad for my cats... who have fur! For reference I am in my 20's and from Florida, and it was hot for me so I know it was hot for them. Moving on to observations: clutter on every counter top and desk, stains and animal fur on the couch I sat down on, an excessive amount of items stocked literally everywhere(on top of cabinets like they had put some effort into getting them up there) it made me wonder if they were even in date because they had obviously been there a while, a free roaming "office cat?" If I would have brought a dog in there I know that would have been a problem no matter how well behaved the animal. Moving on to experience: due to the temperature and disheveled nature of the "office" I will admit I was already anxious by the time the vet got in, and wanted to leave but stuck it out( I was determined to experience the 5 stars). The "vet tech?" weighed my cats no big deal other than the scale was right next to the office cat whom was asleep. So glad my cats aren't triggerable. After weighing my kitten the "vet tech?" proceeded to hold and pet him for a whileeeee which seemed strange to me and a bit inconsiderate without first asking. I began to kind of understand later when the vet simply turned around in her office chair and proceeded to conduct the exam with my kitten on a stool with a pet bed on it with who knows how many animals fur and smells (sanitary/calming). Side note no one wore gloves or washed their hands before handling either of my pets, one of which consisted of an eye exam... I was closer to the actual exam room than where my cats were being examined(some may call this personable, I call it lazy), I sat this whole time looking into the vets office from essentially another room. During the examination she kept telling the two other girls of which I assumed to be related to her(they all shared a similar likeness) what she was going to do to my animals, I had to ask every time she mentioned something for her to explain to me(the owner) what she wanted to do and why... There was no asking me. I don't know about anyone else but being that these animals live with me 24/7 and I love them dearly I am not about to drop them off and let someone do what they think best, especially due to the unprofessional environment I walked into initially. On 2 separate occasions my cats were whisked away to another room to be given a treatment by the "vet techs?"... I COULD NOT SEE THEM and the only person I vaguely trusted in the room because she proved it through discussion was the vet and she did not leave her chair once my entire visit. My older indoor cat was over due on his rabies vaccine, she told me that was illegal... whattt? after further inquiry about the subject and stopping her from simply giving it to him she explained that a vet could turn down caring for my cat due to him not having his rabies vaccine. IT IS NOT ILLEGAL for me to not get my cat a rabies vaccine. The only reason I stopped her was because I did not see where the vaccine had come from (I assumed they had to be refrigerated like human vaccines and could see the fridge the whole time so I assumed it did not come from there, I could be wrong). Simply put there was an overall lack of professionalism in the office, and multiple factors made me ultimately distrustful of both the vet and her "Vet Techs?" I will be getting my cat his rabies vaccine. Just not here. I trusted the vet's knowledge simply not the environment. They could do better. The reviews are most definitely misleading. read more

We have taken our dogs to Gail for years now, and I continue to be amazed at how good she and her staff are with all of the animals. We travel to Banner Elk to see her from Charlotte. I trust her opinion and they are extremely reasonable in their pricing. We highly recommend. read more

Gail is by far the best vet in the high country! She has lovingly cared for 3 cats and 3 dogs for me over the years. At least 2 of those animals were a little high maintenance too. She takes the time to make them comfortable and calm before an exam, works with me on pricing when emergencies come out of nowhere (because who has money for that!?) and genuinely cares about animals and their people. I have had animals for over 30 years and have never met another vet who has the magic touch with my fur babies that Gail has. Her staff is always knowledgeable, sympathetic, and kind. They have always been flexible with hours when I need them most. Gail has a customer for life in our family. We love this clinic!! read more
