This place rocks. They use fear free veterinary practices. We are on vacation up here and our dog developed a lump. We thought it might be from a slip she had hiking over wet rocks. The staff here were great. They could have easily gouged us with unnecessary tests and procedures but did not. The lump turned out to be a hematoma. I have been to App New River Vet several times (about 6, maybe?) in the past 3 years to take my dog, Junior, an 11 year old English Springer Spaniel, for appointments. I never considered this his primary vet as he as one in our hometown of Charleston, SC, that he has attended since I first took him home and who he usually sees for yearly check-in appointments, given that I visit often as my parents, other family, and friends still live there. That said, I have taken Junior to ANRV several times when I've had more urgent concerns regarding his health, such as allergies and hotspots and others. I have seen mostly all practitioners, Drs. Koh, Mervin, and McAdams, throughout my time here. I've had varying experiences. At times, I've noticed that interpersonal communications could be improved, but nothing bad enough to report or really even write a Yelp review about. (Once, I did cry after I left, because a provider said, "Aww, he's getting old. You know what that means, right?" sort of alluding to him being old and dying relatively soon, and, of course, I am super sensitive about my companion). Other times, I've questioned some of the procedures they've encouraged, wondering whether they are absolutely necessary or if they are just trying to gather more money. Overall, however, I have been satisfied and pleased with all of my visits. I wanted to write specifically about my experience today. I have been worried about my dog's labored breathing and finally called this morning to ask whether I could schedule an appointment for him to be seen. The receptionist noticed the concern in my voice, and urged me to come in right away to be squeezed in to be seen. Upon entering the facility, I immediately cried out of concern for my dog (note: this is not a common occurrence for me), and the two women in the front office were kind to comfort me. When I was taken back into the room, our vet tech was very kind with Junior, listening to my concerns, and gathering his vitals. Dr. McAdams himself was exceptionally receptive, effective, and quickly reassured me that everything was okay, providing me several options for treatment and allowing me to make an informed choice. When checking out and paying, the receptionist heard me discuss with my friend (who kindly came to visit us) that I was unclear whether my dog's ear was infected or not, and she quickly went to find the vet tech so she could clarify the diagnosis. Most importantly to me,the receptionist looked me in the eye and genuinely reassured me not to feel embarrassed or like I am "putting anyone out" for my questions and concerns about my pet. This was exceptionally kind and meaningful to me, and I sincerely left this afternoon feeling that everyone on staff cared about me and my dog. I appreciate everyone's help today and throughout my time in Boone, as they have accommodated my random, rather hectic and panicked phone calls and impromptu visits concerning my dog. If you have a pet in Boone, I would definitely consider coming here. Note, too, that one some days they are open late (until 8:00 pm) and even on some Saturdays. Wonderful place! We decided to switch here permanently from our current vet after they were able to accommodate us for an urgent care appointment the same day (which seems rare here since a lot of places are booked weeks in advance). We've really missed the personal touch/interaction we had with our former vet before moving to the Boone area. As such, we were delighted to see the genuine care the entire staff exerts (from the initial scheduling process to the curbside pickup to the doctor's phone assessment). I especially appreciated how they communicate transparently, interact with your pet (both physically and emotionally), and treat you and your family as more than just a number. They also will follow up the next day, and they provide nice small touches, such as by giving your dog a goodie bag filled with essentials and treats. read more

I used this vet for years. They once were good caring vets. No longer. Now they are constantly blaming covid for a complete lack of caring. You can't get an appointment unless you pay their "emergency" fee. With an elderly cat at the end of her life I'm told to go elsewhere to an emergency vet and hung up on. I had to evacuate from Wilmington and needed one can of special dog food for my pup they were going to require me to pay for an exam when she's already prescribed the medicine my veterinarian office where we are located in Wilmington was happy to see him prescription up that front desk said I needed to pay for an exam I am running low on funds low on life and I am devastated that they would not sell me one little can of dog food !!!! I do not recommend going to this place especially if you're in a state of an emergency. The front desk lady was on personable and not understanding at all I did not even feel comfortable asking if there was another vets office in the area that we could try!!! read more

I saw the score ANRVA had on Yelp, and didn't know how that could possibly be! I have been taking both of my pups, Maisie and Murphy, to App New River since they were both puppies. Maisie passed, and when I called to cancel her paw plan, they sent me a handwritten condolence letter... they are so kind! Paw plans- as a college student with pups, vet bills can be very intimidating. This being said, the paw plans they offer make vet care very affordable and much less intimidating. Murphy is like the kid at daycare that picks up all of the illnesses; we have been to ANRVA three times in the past month. Murph has seen every vet and nearly every vet tech at App New River, they are amazing! Murph primarily sees Dr. McAdams but, due to his ability to catch everything, has seen each other vet as well, they are all amazing! All of the people that work at the front desk area are insanely efficient, do everything they can to help you, and are so kind. They are also great at remembering people's pets and their names, it is so impressive! The vets are so thoughtful, patient, and really care about the well-being of the pets. They are very transparent and communicative. My roommate recently adopted a pup and, per to my forever recommendation, started taking her to ANRVA. Her pup has some anxiety about vet visits and medical equipment, and Dr. Koh took the time to work with my roommate's pup to help her feel a bit more comfortable! I could not be happier with Murph's vet care, and will always rave about ANRVA! read more

I can't say enough good things about ANRV!! Dr. Kreiss is hands down one of the best veterinarians we have ever had! She's thorough, she's real, and no matter how long it's been since we've been in she always remembers every little nuance and characteristic about your pet. Another great visit for both my four-legged kids with Dr. Cathy Kreis. She is an amazing vet. I have had pets my entire 57 years and have visit many different vets. She is absolutely the best I have ever met. Kind, thorough, gentle and does her best to put your pet at ease. She is willing to spend as much time is necessary to determine the best course of action and make sure you understand the condition and plan of treatment. Dr Cathy Kries is wonderful. She took time with my dog who was anxious and took time to explain to me what his ear problem was and what to do about it. Turns out it's probably a combination of change in diet and new environment No meds necessary! Just going back to the old food and sardines for treats. This place is awesome! They were extremely fair and knowledgable. They took care of my dog very well. I trust them endlessly. I don't really understand where the negative reviews come from, because I really have no complaints. I am extremely up tight about how I spend my money. And yet, here I am, very happy with the experience. They are honest, if you ask the right questions, just like anyone else. Of course they will inform you of all of the services they offer, but it is up to you if you choose to go forward with it. I am actually happy they gave me all of the information that they did, even if I don't end up utilizing them. In my eyes, the more information they give the better. Ultimately you are paying for them to help you out. Just saying! Anyways, I don't even live in Boone anymore and I'll still be returning probably once a year at least. DO NOT TAKE YOUR PET HERE. They coerce you into getting a "paw plan", then charge you for things that are supposed to be covered underneath the ridiculously expensive plan. I took my cat in to get spayed and she got deathly sick in the next few days. I called and took her in, where I told them she was ill from the surgery. They DENIED that and said she must be sick because of something I did, or that she was "exposed to" at home. The cat had never been sick in her life, and she's an indoor cat that is in a safe environment. They charged me for the visit supposed to be covered, as well as for the medication. Front desk is rude if you have any problems. Then call me harassing me for more payments. read more

My poor husky pup has a back condition and is on pain management for the rest of her life and requires consistent medication to keep her comfortable and happy. I just moved to Colorado and was told yesterday by a representative of this establishment that our husky would have her meds filled this morning. After missing her vet appointment we had scheduled here per their direction & promise, we reached out this morning, we were not only told a completely different story, but also called liars by Dr. Ko. All in all, our husky has been left with no medication to get her through the weekend due to their lack of communication and compassion. They have seen our husky her entire life, are familiar with her congenital back disease, and refuse to provide her with the medications they themselves started her on for pain management. If you want your pet handled with care DO NOT take them here!! From one pet parent to another, let's try to make sure no one leaves animals in situations like this!! read more

I wish I could give this place 0 stars. This is the worst vet clinic I have ever experienced in my life. I am trying to fly home with my dog and I was scheduled at this vet to have her paperwork filled out to be able to fly. I was counting on it because the paperwork has to be submitted 24 hours before the flight and they told me they could do it. So I woke up at 8am to drive to the appointment and these people call me 10 minutes before my appointment to tell me they can no longer do it. So now thanks to them I will miss my flight and they respond to me like robots with absolutely no form of sympathy for the situation. This place is extremely unprofessional and the staff are completely illiterate. If you are you going to run a vet clinic and charge people great money then hire employees with a higher IQ score than a 40. There is a reason this place has the lowest star rating out of all the vets in Watauga county. read more

While summering in Boone, we decided to take a four-day trip. Appalachian New River Veterinary Associates was not only welcoming and accommodating, but attentive to the cautious attitude of our 118-pound Rhodesian Ridgeback. (He is the stud for an African breeding line, so we are extremely careful with whom he comes into contact). Extremely Unimpressed! Why this place even bothers with an appointment system is beyond me. I made an appointment for my pet, and ended up sitting for over an hour and a half while being told I was being made to wait because an emergency had come in. Well, every single time I have had an emergency with an animal every vet I have ever called has said "I'm sorry... We don't have any openings but you can take your animal to the emergency clinic".... So what did I have to end up doing??? Someone who had MADE AN APPOINTMENT??? I had to put my animal back in the carrier, take them just down the street to the emergency clinic, so I could get him seen without having to wait yet ANOTHER HOUR?!?!?! My animal was having issues, hence the reason for me making an appointment to get him seen by a vet. These people should've told the person who called and said they were bringing their animal in without an appointment, that there was no openings and they would have to take their animal to the emergency clinic. (Which, by the way, is like the length of a football field down the street from this place). Completely unacceptable!!!!!!!! read more

They only care about their own bank account. I am in town for longer than expected due to a medical issue in my family and ran out of my dog's prescription dog food. This was the third vet I went to in order to buy his food. The other two offered to order it for me with a faxed prescription from my vet at home, but did not carry it. This vet had the food on the shelf, but refused to sell it to me without examining my dog first. Why on earth I would choose to purchase this very expensive food if he didn't need it? I understand that it is a prescription and they have to obey laws, but the others were willing to accept a prescription from my vet at home. In the middle of my family emergency, they were unwilling to help me. Obviously no empathy toward my situation. Obviously no empathy toward my poor dog who is almost out of his prescription medicine. I'll drive as far as I need to to get my little buddy his dog food, but I won't have him "treated" by a vet whose priority is charging for unnecessary visits. read more

I took my new puppies here for their first boosters and a check up after just getting them. The office staff, and the vet, was not all that friendly, not rude, but just not friendly. The vet wanted to give them a wormer claiming they had never been dewormed and even though the fecal exam showed no signs of worms. This told me that she had not even bothered to look at the health record I provided them from the breeders. Both puppies had been dewormed several times. We chose to wait another week for the boosters due to the age difference in the pups and to put them on the same schedule. I was informed that I would again be charged for a wellness exam when I brought them back even though it would only have been a week. I felt like we were nothing more than a money sign. I was told on the phone that if I got the pawplan I could use my carecredit card for the first day's charge and the enrollment fee, but upon time for payment I was told I could not. It wasn't that much of a savings anyway, and I could tell by what they were saying it was not going to cover everything they had in mind for the first year. I thought their fees were way too high and that they were more concerned about the fees than my pups. I will not be going back. Not impressed with this place at all. read more

We moved to this area 7 yrs ago and took our cat to a different vet who suggested I would need to give a de-wormer pill to our cat. He said he doesn't like cats and wouldn't do it in office. Right then I decided to look for a different Vet. I chose Appalachian New River Vets and have never regretted it. Our cats, dogs have all been seen there, from normal yearly exams to emergency care to end of life care. Dr Kreiss and Dr McAdams have been wonderful, caring providers of care to our pets and always are gentle and take the time needed to give the care we expect. When our grand dog was dx with diabetes, Dr Kreiss tried with us to get him better and stable. When it became apparent he wasn't going to do so, she was caring with not only Wobby but with my husband when I was out of town and it became time for Wobby to go over the Rainbow Bridge to frolic with all the other loved pets. I would definitely recommend this vet to anyone, they were extremely friendly from the moment I called to schedule an appointment all the way through the next day when they called to check on my dog to make sure she was okay after her vaccinations. I'm a nervous pet mom, ask more questions then probably necessary and really enjoy a thorough examination. I started going to this vet a very long time ago, before they put themselves under the control of a larger corporation. My pets don't travel well, so I've been using a mobile service for the minor problems they experience, but now that they are getting older they need things that can't be done at home so I've gone back. Dr. Kreis is very knowledgable and very good with anxious cats, and she is willing to spend an enormous amount of time with the cat and on the phone with you, explaining things. Kudos for that. However, the business end of this office, which I have heard is at least in part controlled by the corporation that now owns them, is pretty shady. For example, they tell you to use an online pharmacy (which has competitive pricing) but what they do not tell you is that there is $12 "Vet fee" on top of the cost of the meds that they profit from. They also have a pet care plan which they push very hard and which seems like a good deal if you need to have something expensive done anyway (like dental) but everyone you talk to gives you a different price, conditions, benefits, etc. and your pet is not even eligible if there's anything wrong with them. So medical care, I'd give high grades, but I'm very turned off by the rest and may well check out another local office. read more
