I ordered a gift card for my boyfriend for Christmas, successfully paid $130 for it, then never actually received the certificate via email. They said to wait 24-48 hours, so I gave them a week before I called and emailed. They responded that the business is going through a "company redesign" and they aren't currently giving lessons, but would I like to wait until they open back up? I asked for a refund and it took a month from purchase to refund (to be fair, this was around the holidays). My biggest problem? They allow you to get through the entire transaction without letting you know they're shut down, and don't give you any of that messaging until you reach out proactively. Not good business practices, and not where I will leave my $130.

After that bad experience I didn't want to give up on surfing so I started researching. By my surprise I came across WB Surf Lessons through Instagram. I actually took the time to check out their website and watched their video. Their website and testimonals really impressed me and I'm so glad I booked a lesson with them. WB Surf Lessons, hands down, is the best surfing lesson company in the Bay Area. I took two lessons with them and WB went above and beyond for me and my friends. Where do I begin, Ward, is a great exprienced surfer/instructor and is very patient, knowledgeable, and overall a fun dude. I had trouble in the beginning of my lesson as far as overthinking and I wasn't successful popping up. Ward, was quick to notice I was having a difficult time and he made the adjustments that was needed. Whatever he did worked and my first pop up was the best experience I ever had. Simona, handles more of the business aspect of the company but occassionally instructs as well. She is very well organized, a great communicator, knoweledgeable, and a sweet person. Did I mention she also takes amazing photos during the surf lesson. The somewhat worn out surf bus made me wonder whether this was going to be a fun 2 hours but the great care the guys took in explaining me and my kids about the dangers of surfing and how to cope with that took away any doubt I had about their professionalism. We had a blast! After a good instruction on how to get on your board, we hit the waves. Mike and Dominic were in the water with us instructing and helping us while standing in the turf for the full 2 hours and a bit more. We had a couple of great runs, wipe outs and lots of laughs. We've been with Waterworks for almost two years now and we've been at every single Hayward location…read more(Foothill, Hesperian, and now Whipple) mostly due to scheduling reasons and being somewhat equal distance to most of them. After a bit of a snafu with the constant HVAC closures at both Hesperian and Whipple, as well as a very professionally handled customer service escalation (shoutout to the amazing support from Alicia) and additional support from a swim manager (thank you Michelle) we can now happily give Waterworks an updated review! I've have now had my son in lessons with both Tay and Zane and couldn't be happier with our son's progress. We've cycled through many instructors through all our time at Waterworks but Tay and Zane have truly been the best match for my child (and we really have had cycled through 4+ instructors before due to high turnover) and we truly hope Tay and Zane are going nowhere anytime soon! My son's confidence has soared since working with both these instructors and I can't wait to see him swim even more independently. Daydreaming about him joining a swim team one day! He went from being in tears out of fear before every swim lesson to eagerly plopping himself into the pool and looking forward to class every time. And even when he does get nervous, both Tay and Zane know how to help him take deep breaths and practice other coping skills to feel less nervous. Waterworks tends to be on the more expensive side but not that much different in pricing than other swim schools in the area. Most importantly, the indoor pool is a perk as I've had friends recommend some of the local swim clubs but since they're all outdoor, the seasonality of swim wouldn't work for us. I just tell myself we are paying more for the year round access to indoor swim lessons. Thanks again to the Waterworks team especially for helping us hang in there after all the ups and downs!
