Maverick's Surf Shop has a deep history in the Half Moon Bay community, or so I was told, by a friend who grew up in the area.... This shop and the nearby popular beach with which it shares a name and is known for their huge wave surfing is a must-see if you're in the area. So, for that reason, and because I have a son named Maverick, we decided to swing by this surf shop and check it out... We weren't in the market for any surf gear, but they have everything you need here if you are. We enjoyed perusing their store and I ended up purchasing a t-shirt and hat. The other stores in the area were closed for renovation, but if you end up here, eat at nearby Sam's and make an afternoon of it. That's what we did. Enjoy! read more

Listen I am not a surfer but I am a scuba diver. I have been to mavericks when the waves have been 60 foot high. The movie Chasing Mavericks is spectacular. Why are the waves so Big here? The National Marine Sanctuaries states, "Due to the steep topography of the bedrock reef at Mavericks, the wave energy rapidly converges and the wave height rapidly increases, creating a huge wave compared to the adjacent areas." I had to see this surf shop and it is an incredible place. The staff is very friendly and they assist you in whatever you are looking for. They have a great selection of footwear for both men and women as well as eye glasses. The sorts were really great with selections for men that are with a collar and lots os T's and sweat shirts. The prices are really good and they do have sales racks in the front on clothing that is in some cases 50% off. You have a great view of the Harbor and Mavericks and the customer service is fantastic. By the way, I purchased a T-Shirt there with their brand and I am wearing it right now as I type this review. I was born in Manhattan yet raised on Long Island & moved to FL when I was eight. I lived in Cocoa Beach famous for where 10 time world surfing champion Kelly Slater is from. I was an avid surfer for a number of years. In FL the Atlantic is warm there so you can be in trunks half the year. In Cocoa Beach & the beaches near there the waves can be small so the waves are more difficult to ride & you have to be more technical to surf there except when the hurricanes happen in the Summer as the big storms pass by they send bigger waves. In Northern California the Pacific is cold for it comes from the Alaskan currents. A wetsuit is needed year round. I first heard of Mavericks back in the day. Jeff Clark surfed this break alone for many years before turning on another young surfer in Santa Cruz to the break only after he could hold his breath for four minutes under water. Mavericks is no joke. During the season the waves can get 60 feet big. The water is cold & there are great white sharks. A truly legendary break that rivals Laird Hamilton's Jaws in Maui. The folks are nice here at the surf shop. Jeff Clark started this surf shop back in 1975. There are souvenir t-shirts. For those rare dare devil big wave surfers there is gear to ride Mavericks when the waves are epic. Wet suits made from natural sustainable rubber are about $300. Custom surfboards are about $1,000. Nice coffee table book with amazing photographs & essays describing Mavericks worth checking out! read more

For surfers or just those who like to watch surfing like me, you can't miss this area, or stopping by the shop. Take notice that it may not appear open, but actually is. I feel bad for a lot of surf people that missed this place. Nearby, of course, is Mavericks, famous to all surfers. The sea blessed many the day I was there, and it's a joy to watch. So relaxing, I feel this should be mandated as a first line treatment for stress and hypertension. Just drive the coast down the peninsula and stop to appreciate the beauty of California and the Pacific Ocean. So, the shop. It's full of gear, some boards, t shirts, bathing suits, a few wetsuits, jewelry, postcards, tchotchkes, etc. The staff are very nice, and there's a bathroom outside (portable for peons, regular for harbor vendors) down in the private parking area. I love this place! It is a surf shop that has friendly employees that are super nice and helpful. When we were walking around perusing the store, they even had an adorable puppy greeting customers the puppy reminded me of Wishbone (you remember the show, right? It's about a dog who tells stories). We bought a backpack for my daughter, some slippers for myself, and a couple bracelets. I would definitely come back to this place when I am in the area because of the friendly atmosphere and items that they have. I am a middle aged broad, that doesn't live close to the ocean, that has an inner desire to be a surfer. So when I'm near a surf shop, I must go in and look aloo around. Well in Half Moon Bay, there is the Maverick Surf shop. It is located in the harbor's marina center right next to the parking lot. The shop is owned by the legendary surfer Jeff Clark (yes, that Jeff Clark...the professional dude that surfs the big waves of Maverick). On a lazy summer weekend that I dropped in, he was working the shop. I meet him, he is a down to earth guy that was easy to talk with. He truly appreciates spreading his knowledge of the sport. All the while, as we spoke he was not trying to sell me anything. Class act. Plus he knows how to hire folks because the rest of the staff here are friendly and knowledgeable. There is a welcoming vibe. The shop has an assortment of boards...plus Jeff takes orders for customized boards. Jeff is a master board builder and his boards are carried in the shop. Besides the surf gear (boards can be Rented), the shop also sells wetsuits (+rental), swimsuits, clothes, sunglasses, and gift items. Also the shop has a stand up paddle board (SUP rentals (with wet suits), lessons, tours, and SUP yoga classes. Check out the website or ask the staff in person for the deets. Pricing is affordable. 5-29-2022 @ 2:02pm. We walked in, looked around, they had a t-shirt that I liked so we bought two. They charge a 3.99 percent Credit Card fee, so I paid with cash. Seems to be the new norm in Half Moon Bay. Not a fan of fees, I won't go back again. It says they accept credit cards on Yelp, but they do not disclose the fees. They most likely use this 3rd party vendor and dump the extra cost on to its customers just like the Old Prinction Landing up the street. read more

Cool spot. Cool gear. Stock up on some nice warm, surfer clothes. This is the "go to" spot to get toursity "Mavrick" stuff that locals and surfers actually wear. It is a lot cooler than the Half Moon Bay Touristy shirt/hat you will find in other spots. There is a lot to cool stuff to choose from: swimsuits, jackets, shorts, etc. They practice covid safety and only allow a small amount of people inside with masks. Nice shop but lousy sales practices. Paid by debt cash card and noticed a "service fee" on my bill when I got home. The sales person asked if I was paying cash or card but when I said debt, I was not told there was a service fee. When I phoned to ask what this service fee was, I was told their card readers can't differentiate between credit card and debit card and they are charging customers a service fee for using any card. The staff was instrumental in getting a beginner surfer started without gouging us with things that just aren't necessary for beginners. I feel like this place is mostly a novelty shop for me because Jeff Clark started the Mavericks competition. For those of you who don't know, Mavericks is a grass roots surfing competition that occurs in Half Moon Bay every year. The waves get pretty dangerously high so there has been stories of spectators getting swept away before. You can usually find a dozen surfers out there on any day even though the waves now aren't the best. The competition I believe usually happens around May. It's very cool to be in this shop since they have a lot of boards by Jeff Clark and they have a healthy selection of all things surf related as well as cool "sandal shoes" that the bf was eying. It's definitely a worthy stop over if you're already in the area, you can even check out the Mavericks competition point! read more

Well have you ever seen a human being attached to a piece of fiberglass and foam by foot straps pulled into one of these walls of water by a jet ski? I have - and it is amazing... It is "epic", and it is called Mavericks. I followed these directions and they worked perfectly. Take binoculars... And listen to the last part of the quote! "Directions to Mavericks: Take Highway 1 north of Half Moon Bay about 4 miles. Turn left on Capistrano Road at the traffic light. Turn left on Prospect Way. Drive west on Harvard Avenue until it merges onto West Point Avenue. Follow West Point up the hill to the small, unmarked parking lot. You can park in the lot and hike about 1 mile uphill along the footpath to the viewing area on the bluffs. PLEASE...do not leave any trash behind, stay out of the marsh and off the delicate reefs, do not disturb the wildlife, and enjoy" While you're there, pay homage to Mark Foo. He was a Hawaiian legend who lost his life to one of these waves. By the way - I was writing about "Mavericks Surf SPOT" - my review was merged with Mavericks Surf Inc??? Whatever. I'm a windsurfer, not a surfer, so I'm unlikely to buy any gear here. Still, it's interesting to see how the "other half" live. They have a pretty cool range of stuff, much like you'd expect from a surf shop (it's a lot less equipment intensive than windsurfing). There's a display of older boards, t-shirts and whatnot, and the staff seemed friendly, if a little bit of the stereotypical surfer dude type. read more

Great destination store. Visited a month or two ago to pick up some shirts for my nephews for Christmas. Met a lovely mature lady who I think was the owner. However returned today to get a couple more items and was met by an over zealous store girl at the front of the store who literally poured a cup of sanitizer in my hand. I could not help but overhear her brash and authoritative tone. She was really rude and not a good representation of the store. She had streaky blonde hair, around 5'2" and wore a long white cardigan...the girl behind the counter with brown hair was very sweet and looked a little embarrassed. I did not buy anything and ended up giving my business to a store in Pacifica. Such a shame. I hope the owner takes note.. read more

Great selection of surf and beach clothing and wetsuit rentals (got a 4/3 for a friend) are quite affordable.

Stopped in a hour before close to rent a wetsuit for a morning surf the next day. I was told there was a $10 overnight fee add to the daily rental fee, total being $30. I asked how much to rent for a day, I was told it was $20, but they rent them out for 4 hour increments (What?!) I asked if they could the overnight fee, they said they could not I asked them why the overnight fee? What do they think I'm going to do with the wetsuit overnight? I walked out frustrated and disappointed! I am the type of customer that would have happily rented the wetsuit for $20, then bought some shop branded apparel and a handful of stickers. You missed an opportunity on turning a $20 rental into a $60 sale, all because you wouldn't the overnight fee. read more

Great little surf shop off the beaten tourist path. Besides surfboards and surf paraphernalia it's a cute little gift shop. They have a great selection of Mavericks t-shirts and other gifts. Great location, great selection and a friendly crew! We stopped here after checking out Maverick's Beach. And yes, the waves were HUGE! Red Bull had been here the week before. They had a great selection of t-shirts and beach wear. We both ended up with top quality sweatshirts - and I'm so happy I bought mine because I've been wearing it for the past two days. It's soft fleece inside and has a great slim fit. Unlike some shops, Mavericks has a wide selection for everyone in the family and their staff is always happy to help find sizes. A+ shop! Oh my frickin' lord, I finally just got to watch the tivo'd coverage of the Mavericks surf contest and it was RIVETING. I watched it twice. And I'm now totally in love with Grant Baker, the out-of-the blue big wave surfer from South Africa who won this year on a borrowed board and knocked everyone's socks off (my boyfriend totally supports my crush). For those not in the know, Mavericks is the famous big wave surfing spot in California (surfed alone for 15 years by Jeff Clark, who now owns the shop and runs the yearly contest). Contestants are given 24-hours notice to show up in Half Moon Bay from all over the world and it is quite a show (although since the break is 1/2 a mile out, watching from the beach is less visual, although probably more colorful, than watching on tv). Tragically, since bystanders also get 24 hours notice, I've missed it two years running, but next year. Next year... Mavericks surf shop is located in the Half Moon Bay harbor close to Princeton Jetty, a friendly surf spot. Owned by big-wave surf legend Jeff Clark, the shop got everything you need for a day at the beach. The rental boards are in perfect conditions and always available. The staff is super nice and give you great advices. I went surfing in HMB 2 days by myself and I was reassured that the staff knew I was in the water and would wait for me at the end of the day. They sell Jeff Clark's boards and other surf gear, they also have a lot of Mavericks items as dvd's and books. I even found a strawberry Sex Wax candle ! I recommend this shop for their excellent rentals and for the opportunity to share experiences with great locals + the location is so convenient as I didn't have a car, I carried the board from the shop to the beach under my arm...it was ok. read more

Mavericks Surf Shop - Always gotta make a quick run to Mavericks whenever we're in the Half Moon Bay Area !! - Sporting Goods Near Me - Half Moon Bay, California

Finally the coast has a well merchandized surf shop with a great selection of everything surfing. I bought my wife a really nice hoody at a great price with a wonderful iconic logo on the back, although it cites Mavericks as being in Half Moon Bay which it really isn't. She even wore it to bed the last two nights. This shop has a warm welcome feeling unlike many of the other shops in the area. Jeff Clark and company have done wonderful job with this place, it used to be a sloppy fish eatery of some sort years ago that never made it. Although it is sometime tough to get into HMB from 92 (thanks to all the no-growthers here that blocked the expansion of highway 92 in the 1980's), Jeff's surf shop is worth the trek along with other fun places here, I love what I call the trifecta of Pescadero, goat farm, the bakery on main street and of course Duartes. The coast is growing up and the tunnel from the North makes it easy to get into the Princeton area where Mavericks and the surf shop is located. Princeton now has more to offer than downtown HMB, better restaurants, more activities including great tide pooling, biking, and guess what its crab season and I cooked up 28lbs for our holiday party this year. Don't waste your time on down town HBM, except for the wine tasting maybe . It is indeed sad to see this gem of a coastal town wrecked and bankrupted by near sighted local politicians who don't even realize the potential of this historical place. There is a lot to be explored here and it's rivh history dates back to Pourtoguese Whalers is very rich and interesting along with all the bootlegging. Also check out where Marilyn Monroe and Joe Dimaggio used to hang out at the Frank Torres Marine View tavern, now the distillery. read more
