I ordered a gift card for my boyfriend for Christmas, successfully paid $130 for it, then never actually received the certificate via email. They said to wait 24-48 hours, so I gave them a week before I called and emailed. They responded that the business is going through a "company redesign" and they aren't currently giving lessons, but would I like to wait until they open back up? I asked for a refund and it took a month from purchase to refund (to be fair, this was around the holidays). My biggest problem? They allow you to get through the entire transaction without letting you know they're shut down, and don't give you any of that messaging until you reach out proactively. I've always wanted to learn how to surf. After moving to SF I knew I had to make it my mission to learn. My first surf lesson was through a living social offer and the class consisted 15 students and 3 instructors. The lesson was completely whack and I didn't learn anything. After that bad experience I didn't want to give up on surfing so I started researching. By my surprise I came across WB Surf Lessons through Instagram. I actually took the time to check out their website and watched their video. Their website and testimonals really impressed me and I'm so glad I booked a lesson with them. WB Surf Lessons, hands down, is the best surfing lesson company in the Bay Area. I took two lessons with them and WB went above and beyond for me and my friends. Where do I begin, Ward, is a great exprienced surfer/instructor and is very patient, knowledgeable, and overall a fun dude. I had trouble in the beginning of my lesson as far as overthinking and I wasn't successful popping up. Ward, was quick to notice I was having a difficult time and he made the adjustments that was needed. Whatever he did worked and my first pop up was the best experience I ever had. Simona, handles more of the business aspect of the company but occassionally instructs as well. She is very well organized, a great communicator, knoweledgeable, and a sweet person. Did I mention she also takes amazing photos during the surf lesson. Today I went with my sister to take my soon-to-be 12 yr old nephew to his surf lessons with Ward at Linda Del Mar. Ward and Simona couldn't have been any nicer. They were very friendly and easy going. Ward taught my nephew how to stand up, when to stand up and gave high fives when the kid was successful. Even though my nephew was getting tired Ward was still patient and encouraged him to keep going. We all had a good time even though I was watching from the beach. I highly recommend WB Surf Lessons to everyone and look forward to scheduling my nephew's next lesson with Ward. read more

Ward and Simona are great at what they do. My girlfriend and I took the 2 hour private lessons and we had an amazing time! Ward was very accommodating as I brought my GoPro in which he filmed footage of us. The entire lesson was very engaging and very informative. He never pushed us beyond our limits and ensured we had a great time while learning. The communication was also super quick so there was no delay in getting any extra information. I had a little bit of experience and had tried surf lessons before, but heading to Pacifica with Ward was a whole new ballgame. My boyfriend and I took a private surf class with Ward last weekend. It was great! Ward was very disarming, patient, and knowledgeable. I was nervous about being out in the water and trying something new but he put me at ease very quickly. He picked a great beach with perfect-sized beginner waves. Simona and Ward, the owners and operators of WB Surf were a real pleasure to work with, start to finish. I found them on Yelp (thanks, ya'll) and Simona got back to me right away with plenty of information and options for my lesson. My friend and I had a great time in the water with Ward while Simona stayed on the sand and took photos. Even though I was Terrible (yes, with a capital T), Ward was encouraging, patient and understanding through the whole lesson. I really appreciated him letting me go at my own pace. The only improvements they can make echo Yelpers before me: upgrade the equipment (though according to Simona, I was the last person to sport the infamous orange wet suit before they retired it!) and get some sort of signage/sweatshirt/branding so it's easier to locate them at the beach. All in all, we had an amazing day we won't soon forget (the action --read: falling down-- shots Simona sold us after the lesson will make sure of that)! read more

Ward's surfing, simply put, is great. All the gear is provided so all I had to do was show up. He was super patient and I felt safe at all times. Wow....what a patient guy! My husband is quite the character and the chatty cathy, but Ward Bushee was super patient and watched, guided, and coached him for a full 2hrs! His pricing was VERY reasonable. Such a nice guy as well as his photographer Simona. I highly recommend hiring them if you are serious about taking some surf lessons. You won't regret it and you'll have a blast. He provides board and wetsuit (if he has any extra).....so all you'll need is yourself, towel, and an extra set of clothes. read more

We came from British Columbia, Canada for surfing lessons and used WB surf. We didn't have a great experience. We didn't receive the promised photos. Simona was unavailable that day. There was no substitute sent, no compensation, nothing. I was disappointed as it was a main reason why we chose them over others: For the action shots included in the lesson package. The one wetsuit my 13 year old was given to wear was bright orange and had a large rip in the bum. It was embarrassing for her as a teen girl. The wetsuit had several other tears on the outside and inside and those pinched her in many spots leaving large welts that are still visible on her 5 days later and painful the entire rest of the trip. Ward is nice enough but he didn't appear as experienced an instructor as the previous lesson my daughters took in Oregon. My youngest stood up continuously in Oregon but couldn't seem to figure it out here and Ward wasn't able to figure out what she was doing wrong. She stood up twice in 2 hours. They just don't seem like an "official" company and in future I would go with a company with a selection of wetsuits, a plethora of staff, and rave reviews. I just cannot recommend them. read more

I decided when I moved out to the Bay Area that I wanted to try to pick up surfing again. I had surfed a bit as a kid, but that was a LONG time ago. My brother-in-law and I decided to take lessons. I began to do some searching and I really wasn't impressed with a lot companies out there. Then I came across WB Surf Lessons. I loved their website, I loved what they had to say about the lessons and their approach, and I loved the team they had. I didn't want to take a group lesson and get lost in the crowd (aka not really learn anything). I wanted to actually learn in an more personal environment. My goal was to gain a new hobby and passion for surfing. Not to just have a random memory to laugh about 20 years from now and never try surfing again. I would 100% recommend WB Surf to anyone looking to actually learn. Ward was awesomely patient and knowledgeable about the surfing. He also has this great approach where it doesn't feel like an awkward lesson. He simply made it seem like we were hanging out in the water and he was providing pointers. He never got frustrated with our progress (aka lack of progress) or the massive amount of questions I asked. Overall - he is just a great guy, a very knowledgeable surfer (experienced and actually knew a good amount about the science behind it all, which was really interesting), and an amazing teacher. Simona is also incredible to work with. She was so responsive when setting it up and takes amazing photos of the day. I actually saw her the next time I went out - she remembered me and was super friendly. So if you are more comfortable with a female instructor - I'm sure she would be incredible at it as well (as she was actually giving a lesson that day and looked like she was great!) So to recap: - WB Surf is awesome and I highly recommend it - Ward and Simona are super great and knowledgeable. Perfect if you have never touched a board before or if you want a refresher (note: I did take 2 lessons with Ward). - If you love dogs - their dog is super sweet and will welcome you when exiting the water...so there's a plus for your fellow dog lovers - The photos of the experience are just a great added bonus. I've been trying different surfschools but Ward and Simone really helped me a lot! The ones I've been trying before had one 1 hour of private lessons. WB offers 2 hours which makes you practice more. They where professional from the beginning to the end. Ward made me calm and made sure that I would be more independent in the water.
