I was in there with my husband who was trying to find a design for himself. When he was shown a bead necklace design, is shot down the idea. A few minutes later, the artist who's been working on a client stops and turn around and says, "You know, that's a Japanese Buddhist beads." I just blankly looked at him and then he repeats that again and then asks me, "AREN'T YOU JAPANESE?" OMG I couldn't believe what I was hearing. Is he THAT ignorant? He asked me AGAIN, "Well, aren't you Japanese?" I just told him, yea but I'm not a Buddhist. I was so offended by their racist and ignorant remarks. I booked my appointment weeks in advance. When I left after two hours of waiting she put my personal Instagram on her story with a IDFWU song in the background. I asked for a drawing with a side profile. When she brought out one that was front facing I asked her to change it she huffed and puffed. Since I was traveling to Kauai for a vacation and a wedding, I also thought it would be a great idea to get a custom Hawaiian tattoo. Doing a search on Yelp, I found Blue Tiki Tattoo. Billie (the owner and artist) displayed work on her website and on other reviews was amazing to say the least. Each piece looked unique and made custom. After picking up our marriage application at the hair salon next door (yes you read that correctly), I stopped by to view her work in person as well as discuss what ideas that I had for the look I wanted. After looking as several rendered drawings and discussing with Billie, we came up with a really unique idea that would incorporate both a dog paw with a tribal theme. She conveniently booked a time while I was still on the island and after my wedding. She had a lot of drop in customers that she had to turn away because she did not want to be well overbooked and gave a very accurate time frame of how long the process would take. I arrived early to complete paperwork and she showed me the final versions of what my tattoo would look like. One with color, one without, one with details, and one more simple. I loved that I had options and when I asked Billie which one she felt pride in... she gave me a straight forward honest answer (BTW that is the one I picked as well). The whole process was done in three (3) hours. I couldn't be more pleased with the results. Billie is a fascinating person with a singing voice to match. She demonstrates not just a talent for art, but for conversation in many forms. If you are willing to spend the quality time, Billie will give you a tattoo that you will always be proud of. I loved her retro-rockabilly style as well as variations on tribal tattoos. I have to admit, if I go back to Kauai I won't be surprised to see if I can commission her for another session. read more

Scheduled an appointment for my husband and I to get a tattoo to signify our trip to Kauai. Went in to get it done and I was highly disappointed. I told, Maria - I think that was her name, what I wanted and she told me what she wanted me to have. I wanted a small Kauai rooster to follow the flow of tattoos that I already have on my ribs. She came out with a rooster after 15 minutes stating, "this is something I came up with" which was taken from a book. The initial rooster was about 4-6 inches tall, I suggested flowers because I have flowers already. She went back and another 15-20 minutes later came out with a 8-10 inch rooster with flowers along the bottom and told me it would look best on my shoulder. All together this would have been close to a 12 inch tattoo. 1. This is not what I wanted. 2. This is not where I wanted it. She then told me it would take 4+ hours and cost $700, no ma'am. Not for something I didn't want. I was polite and said that was to much for me to pay. I told her I respect her prices but I couldn't and wouldn't pay that, to which she replied what will you pay?! That's when I sat down and said no thank you. You were rude, I saw you roll your eyes when I POLITELY declined YOUR tattoo. Don't be rude, it's not nice and can ruin someone's day, like you did mine. read more

Getting inked at Blue Tiki Tattoo was a pleasure from start to finish. First a quick story about how I found the shop since I think it's worth mentioning that they seem to have developed a reputation around Hawaii. I was originally going to get tattooed on Oahu, but the timing did not work for my vacation schedule. I stopped in at Electric Paradise Tattoo in Waikiki, told them I was headed for Kauai and without hesitation they recommended Blue Tiki. I'm so thankful they did. First off, Billie is an amazing artist with the ability to listen to her customers' needs and run with them to create awesome things. I showed her a general idea of what I had in mind and told her some things I wanted changed, and after a few text messages back-and-forth over a weekend, she very quickly came up with this outstanding design. I was especially pleased that she even incorporated an idea I had about the lettering. Such an easy process, yet in the end I was blown away by the final result. Just so much better than I expected! Billie obviously has a great eye and experienced hand. I've already gotten many compliments about the detailed line work and colors. The staff at Blue Tiki was a pleasure to deal with. Welcoming, easy to talk to, and they fit me in to their busy schedule with just a few days' notice -- and they ARE busy, my first indication that this is the go-to place for tattoos. They were able to schedule me so I was getting inked on my last evening on the islands, so the timing worked out perfectly. The shop clearly maintains the highest standards of cleanliness and safety while also having a chill vibe. Located in a fun shopping center so my family was able to find plenty to do while I was getting inked. To top it all off, I thought the price was a great deal considering what Billie was able to do in such a short time. But I have the idea that I would be happy working with any of the artists there based on the quality service that Billie provided. I've been itching for a tattoo for awhile, and figured I would know the right time and place when I saw it. While in Kauai on my 40th (to be), I did some yelping and thought I would pop into the Blue Tiki Tattoo. I was greeted by Gary and showed him an idea of what I wanted, and made an appt for the day before leaving. A down-deposit of $60 was made (this is standard practice). When I arrived, he had 2 designs that incorporated some tribal design with a flower. I chose one, and off we went. It took about an hour and 40 minutes and Gary was great. I only have one other small tattoo that I got 20 years ago, so I'm sure there were a few moments of foot spasms ~ though I tried to be as still as possible.
