This review is for the overall experience I had at and with Bluebird salon for my wedding hair trial and me and my bridal party's wedding day hair. My hair trial was scheduled for three weeks prior to my wedding and it was scheduled a few months in advance. In the weeks leading up to the trial date, my bridal party wanted to see the hair stylist's work so they can gather a sense of her style. I was assigned a hair stylist named "Faith" but couldn't locate her or her page on or through the Bluebird Instagram, so I reached out to Sara, the receptionist who helped me book my trial and wedding day services and she indicated that Faith is not formally affiliated with Bluebird Salon, but is someone who they contract out at times and was able to give me Faith's salon Instagram, as she is a salon owner herself. I found some photos there which also led me to her personal page and her wedding services page as well; there were not many photos of her work altogether. My wedding hair trial day arrived and I arrived right on time to the salon. I let whomever was working at the time know I had an appointment at 5pm with Faith for my hair trial and this individual appeared to attempt to notify another employee as they seemingly went to the suites to look for Faith. 10 minutes after my scheduled start time, I texted Sara (I had not been provided Faith's contact info yet), and Sara stated "She'll be right with you" and "I just texted her". Another 30 minutes passed and Faith had not arrived so I texted Sara again and was told "...she is trying to get there". Immediately following this Faith texted me and stated she "mixed up [her] schedule" took "full responsibility" was an "hour" away and could be there in an hour, which did not work me. She apologized again and stated she would understand if I wanted a different stylist moving forward. A stylist named Mariah, the owner's assistant, offered to wash and style my hair because of my predicament, because I was going out with my bachelorette party after my hair, and she did not charge me. She was really sweet and kind and was very thankful for her in that moment. In the days following, my wedding coordinator was informed of the situation and within two days I had a new stylist assigned and a new date booked for my hair trial. Maryah, the salon owner, was assigned to me and my hair trial went well. She outlined what we'll do differently based on how my hair responded and held up for the trial. The day-of went very well, me and my bridal party were very pleased with Maryah's work and my hair lasted all day long. Maryah listened to every person and did what they wanted with ease. Although my initial interactions with the salon were horrible, the outcome of it all went very well. I gave Bluebird Collaborate 4 stars (instead of 5) due to the hair trial mishap. read more

I was having a moment the night before I booked my appointment. I had been wanting to do the balayage style for a very long time, but I just could never get it right. So as I googled different salon's Bluebird had a few openings! There were two stylists available and I picked Ryan. Ryan is knowledgeable and asked about my previous experiences in dying my hair. Ryan made sure that I knew I could speak my mind if anything wasn't feeling right. Ryan provided me with some education on how to slow down the discoloration process and said when I could get a touch up. The location is very esthetic. All of the staff were friendly. I have nothing but good things to say about bluebird salon. I started seeing Mariah in 2021. My hair was fried and broken. She helped me save my hair and now it is long and healthy! Not to mention coming into the salon is always a relaxing experience. Mariah did my hair for my wedding and it was absolutely GORGEOUS. My mom also comes to Mariah and absolutely loves her. She does her extensions and has transformed her hair. My dad started seeing Cindy in late 2021 and sees her every other week for a cut. He also loves coming into the salon and Cindy is amazing with him. My grandma started coming in around 2022 and started seeing Cindy/Mihai. She is 90 years old and they are so accommodating for her. I booked Bluebird Salon for my wedding and truly had the worst experience. It was very disorganized from the start. My stylist cancelled the day before the wedding, which I was understanding about but I was reassured that my timeline would not change. I got an email at 10pm the night before my wedding saying that they bumped up the time by an hour which is obviously not enough notice for my friends/ family. It was frustrating all around and I only got $50 returned to me. The stylists who did show up were wonderful, but they were working off photos I luckily took from my trial. Incredibly unpleasant experience ! I went in without an appointment, asked if anyone can help me with a face framing haircut, and I was told to come back at 5 pm. To make the story short, I was told by a young hair stylist that she would cut my curly hair only on dry hair which doesn't work for me based on previous experiences. She tried to convince me that this is the only way and when I asked to be rescheduled for the next day with anybody else, she said that based on my bad experience she would not allow anybody to give me a haircut on wet hair because I would not be happy. It definetly sounded like" If I don't do it tonight the way I want it, nobody else will give you a haircut the way you want it!" It was a "take it or leave it" situation. It felt offending and I pointed towards another stylist in the salon and she said" oh, she is new and inexperienced , I don't want you to have another bad experience." I was shocked hearing this young and insecure hair stylist's comments about her colleague who actually looked very professional and knowledgeable. I left but then I came back and what do you think? She called the " new and inexperienced" hair stylist to book an appointment for me, for next day! I don't know my hair stylist's name but all I can say is that she did her best to convince me to not come to the salon second day and have my hair cut when wet , it was dry hair cut or nothing. I was upset at this point and Sammy ( I believe) came to her rescue and after trying to convince me that they are the professionals and they have their techniques and they know better and that this salon is not a good fit for me, she decided to tell me to leave and even came towards me to push me out if needed. i wonder if she realizes that touching me would have meant taking this salon out of business due to the lawsuit I would intent. I read about the owner, looks like a hard working, high achiever, very nice lady, who I hope will be disgusted by the way I have been treated. All I wanted was my hair to be wet when cut since if I need it to style it straight, I would need another haircut. Cutting curly hair dry doesn't work for everyone. Regardless of how I wanted my hair to be cut, a hair salon where the client is kicked out because wants different things, because some hair stylist wants to feel in charge and entitled is not the place I would ever want to to go or reccomended it to anyone. I don't know the name of the woman who decided my fate a couple of days ago, who made it clear that I am not going to have what I wanted, who preferred to waist her time and mine trying to convince me that she knew what she was talking about. I also don't care about this Sammy who proved to be so rude and simple minded but, if being the client, the provider of their salary and tips, doesn't grant us any rights or respect, then it's not worth going to places like this. Usually someone apologizes for not being able to accommodate you or to make an appointment with someone else if everyone else is really fully booked. Something like that would be in place but teaming up against the client when my stylist was so unprofessional is not acceptable. Hearing her speaking low about her coleague was nauseating, especially because she wouldn't stop making wrong comments. I told her that I hope she learned a lesson today but honestly, I doubt it. Instead of apologizing for her younger colleague, Sammy chose to insult me. Regardless of their defending theory, what they did is horrible and I hope it's not happening to anyone anymore and the owner of Blue Bird will take the right measures because based on what happened today , the culture in this business place is unacceptable to any decent human being. read more

I have updated my review once again after I was contacted by the owner of the salon and she quite honestly made the situation worse. Instead of apologizing for what happened she only tried to prove me wrong. The owner stated she asked my stylist if I was given the treatment, of course she said yes, but also my stylist wasn't the one to wash my hair, her assistant was. I work retail and I can't ever imagine arguing with a customer to prove them wrong. I understand standing up for your business but also customers and clients ARE the business. I would never make false claims toward a business, and I didn't even ask for anything in return, I simply felt some logistical aspects of my visit could be improved. read more

For almost a $100 haircut/tips I'd expect a better experience like other salons in the area, or what Bluebird used to be. I was surprised that my stylist did not use any heat protectant product on my hair prior to blow drying. I realized after my haircut that my stylist didn't ask me to look down while cutting my hair. Isn't that not good? The hair wash was too gentle...it feels like shampoo wasn't fully rinsed out. Weak handed washes are the worst. I remembering hearing a year or two ago that the business model had changed. I'm not sure if that's the case now, but the quality of service was not reflected well with my stylist, although they were nice. read more

Bluebird Salon is my go-to for amazing hair in San Luis Obispo. The staff is so friendly and knowledgeable! The use all Bumble & Bumble products so my hair feels and smells great and they have a lot if travel sizes which is great if you want to try something new. I've been getting my hair done by Maryah for over 15 years when she was in LA and continue to visit her now that she's up in SLO. She does incredible color and cuts on my very fine, thin hair - she always manages to make it look so thick and full! Maryah has also done dyed to match hair extensions for me, they turned out perfectly and no one knew it wasn't my real hair. I've also referred many curly haired friends as she has naturally curly hair and is amazing working with curls too. I have had her do my hair in updos for weddings & special occasions and they always look great and last til the next day! Parking for the salon is easy- street meters or in a public lot just on the other side of Garden Street. The salon is located on the left side of Marsh FYI it's a one-way. My review is on Mariah, the salon owner... For quite some time, I was having my hair done by an independent contractor of Bluebird Salon, Skyla Johnson. Skyla advertises herself being the, blonde expert "and "master stylist quote. She advertises these credentials, which in turn, allows her to think she is warranted charging services much more in cost theb you would even find in Los Angeles. When quoting services, Skyla will tell you one price. After the service is complete, the price changes drastically! She quoted me in January 2021, for a partial highlight, and tape in extensions, 295. When the appointment was done, the cost was 500. How does that work? We have a follow up appointment to have the extensions moved up along with a toner and possible color. The day of the scheduled appointment, she contacts me telling me she's overbooked and sends me off to her less than capable, friend and colleague. She promised me that she would back and warranty the work of her friend if anything went wrong. Against my better judgment I went. Her friend and colleague take out the tape-ins and exchangedthem for old tape ends that she had that don't even match my hair color or texture. Her friend/colleague also informed me that I was using the incorrect type of hairdryer which was causing my hair to be dry. Note, my hair was never dry and brittle before seeing Skyla. Her friend/colleague said she had an extra new, only used once, professional blow dryer that she was self to me for $50. Once I got at home, It didn't even power on. When I addressed the situation with her friend colleague, she told me "I'm sorry, the dryer is nonrefundable quote. The day after my appointment, all of the taping started falling out. I sent Skyla photos of my hair and all the falling out tape ins. She told me, "Maggie has to fix this for you. I cannot believe this happened to your hair. If she doesn't fix it I will make it right with you, I promise". After returning to Maggie on three different occasions, I'll because the tape and kept falling out, Skyla said she will take care of my hair and make everything right including replacing the tape ends based upon what I paid her in January. When I go to Bluebird Salon for my appointment with Skyla, she didn't have any new tapings. Rather, she shuffle through a bag of old tapings, a variety of colors none of which matched my hair. She reuse the tape and that Maggie put in my hair. My hair looks stupid when I left. It was lopsided, the tapings were extremely tight and the color was off. That evening my head started really hurting. Again I contacted Skyla... She said she would not be able to take care of my hair for another eight weeks. Long story short, look at the photos attached... Because of Skyla's horrible work on my hair, I ended up having bald spots, sores and blisters on my scalp. Truly this was malpractice... When I addressed her with the situation, she got defensive, asked me what I wanted in return and then refused two warranty any of her work. Skyla is far from the blonde expert. She ruined my hair like no one else. You might look OK when you first walk out of the salon, but within a week or so, her blonde always turns very brassy. She also damages your hair by processing it too quickly. After Skyla refused to warranty the work she did on my hair and ruining my hair, I reached out to the owner of Bluebird Salon. Mariah was awesome! Unfortunately Skyla is an independent contractor so there could be nothing she could do about the money. However, she agreed, on her own free well, to color and cut my hair at no charge when I was ready. She also reached out to Skyla asking her to make things right with me. Skyla refused. Both Mariah,And her front office staff are exceptional. They communicate, they follow through and they stand by their word. I look forward to having Mariah as my hairstylist. Skylae Johnson and Maggie McCall have a lot to learn from her. read more

I've been a Bluebird customer for about 3 years now, and always go to Curtis who specializes in straight razor cutting. I have very fine and straight hair that never had much volume before. Curtis consulted me and was the first hairdresser to suggest a bob cut. I was blown away - all of a sudden, my hair is full, perfectly frames my face, and makes me feel beautiful. We've experimented with different bob styles and bang lengths and shapes over the past years, and Curtis always offers his expert knowledge of what would work best for my personality and style. I have tried many hairdressers in SLO and the five cities area before, but never had such a great experience as with Bluebird. My cut is $65, and I get free bang trims and neck trims between appointments - totally worth it! Curtis is always professional, but fun and likes to talk about various topics, so he makes the time go by quickly with many laughs. I'll never go anywhere else again! read more
