We really enjoyed our stay at Bluefin Bay! Waking up to the sunrise over the water was such a highlight, and the beach was beautiful. The nightly s'mores were a fun touch, and the pool and hot tub were relaxing, with a pretty walkway leading to them. Our room was comfortable, with cozy beds and extra bedding, which we appreciated. We loved that the main lodge had hot coffee and ice water available - as well as games and loves to check out! That said, the exterior is starting to show some age, with weeds throughout the grounds and overgrown bushes making the sidewalks feel crowded. A window on our room was broken and the indoor pool was out of commission. While the activities are a great perk, one was full before I could attend, and the yoga class I signed up for didn't have an instructor show up. Overall though, it was a relaxing and enjoyable stay and I'd happily come back again! read more

Stayed in Unit 2- 2 bedroom 2 bath with 2 patio upper & Lower. Full kitchen, living room, fireplace. All the cups, plates , utensils you may need. Upper bedroom is a suite overlooking Lake Superior. We enjoyed dinner at Blufein Grille, we enjoyed the outdoor pool & hot tub overlooking Lake Superior. We had Pizza from Coho and it was delivered. This is a resort you can check in and dont have to leave for food or drink. There are options. There is also a spa, indoor pool/hot tub. We enjoyed the fire pit and a night walk on the lighted lake walk. Everything was clean and accommodating. We will be back. read more

We took our first family vacation here with our 2 month old a few weeks ago and had a great time! We booked a Master Superior Suite which is unparalleled for the proximity of giant bed to fireplace to big jacuzzi tub-- it made for a cozy weekend watching a big blizzard pass through Lake Superior. Our suite was right by the outdoor pool and hot tub-- if we hadn't had the baby with we would have definitely dabbled as it looked like fun-- heated concrete for the pool area, and lots of people heading there for apres ski soaks. We kept the fire ripping and appreciated that our wood box was always well stocked. Lutsen is about 20min away so we went up there for the day. The one thing I wish was better were the food options. We had a wet bar so brought lots of snacks which helped, but weren't impressed by breakfast at the Coho Cafe. We did order dinner delivery from the Bluefin Grille both nights which was a clutch amenity given baby's bedtime. The turkey club was really good actually, but overall I wish there were more dining options. That being said, this is a relatively remote area of the north shore so I'm sure demand is not consistent enough to support many more restaurants. The hotel does also supply unlimited s'mores packs to make in your room, and a big DVD collection you can borrow. My husband really enjoyed watching Wayne's World, hah! read more

The International Staff that is usually present at many Minnesota & Wisconsin resorts was here. I love that they offer students to come to the USA for 3 months to work and learn what USA is really like. And no, they are NOT taking jobs away from American kids. These resorts are remote and there aren't enough local staff to hire! There seems to be many activities for families to do here, but I only experienced The Wedding Site with Lake Superior in the background and the building where our Rehearsal Dinner was, and the private dining room we had for the reception. Everything was topnotch. Truly. My room was on the outskirts of the compound, but there were roads and parking to wherever I needed to go. Really enjoyed staying here with our family. Checking in was easy and we felt very safe during this pandemic. We were able to request more items if needed but our condo had everything we needed included a large tub of sanitizing wipes to keep the space clean and safe for us and staff. We had a variety of things to do outdoors that the resort offered including being able to sign up for kayaking and canoeing tours. You have the ability to also rent bikes and other equipment to keep the kiddos busy at all times. The views were amazing being right next to the water and really enjoyed both outdoor and indoor pools. We mostly cooked and ate in our condo but there are plenty of options to dine in or do takeout from any of the open restaurants offered at the resort. Really close to Lutsen if you plan to explore that area and ski in the winter months and near Temperance park to be able to do hiking and get even better Views to enjoy. Highly recommend and will be back on our next excursion up north! read more

It was a beautiful resort! They had everything from snowshoes, spikes for shoes for those icey hikes and skates for ice skating to lots of complementary tea, coffee and hot chocolate! We stayed here several times, but not recently... it was over 15 years ago for our last visit. It has definitely declined. It used to be so upscale, but is no longer. Nothing is kept up. All the electrical outlets in the place, except the bathroom would not hold anything you plugged in. We had to fix the toilet chain 2 times and the worst was on the second night there we pulled the sheets and blankets up and untucked them from the bottom of the bed because they only came halfway up and my black pj pants were completely covered in animal hair. Obviously sheets were not even washed. They gave us a $50 discount for that, but it wasn't worth it for sleeping in dirty sheets 2 nights. I would also not recommend the restaurant. We ordered 2 dishes. One was marginal and the ribeye came out cold. read more

We stayed here as part of a large family reunion trip recently. We had a 3 bed 3 bath condo, and my husband and I got the first floor bedroom/bath. The other family members got the bigger bedrooms upstairs. The home was cozy and was wonderful to wake up right to the water. The only weird thing I found was that our bathroom had a window into the living room (with a red heat lamp) LOL. Of course blinds on both sides. Some units had a (swinging) painting to cover that up better. But it was still a little awkward. WiFi in unit was decent but had to sign in again after a day. Bluefin offered some amenities such as an outdoor pool (I believe there was also an indoor pool?), kayaking, canoeing, yoga, tennis court, bike rental, dvd rentals. We ate at the Blue Fin Grille most nights while there and they had live music on a couple nights. We did kayak and found Hans the instructor/guide to be nice/helpful. Lots of hiking options nearby, short drive to Grand Marais. All in all we had a nice relaxing stay. read more

The amenities at BB are excellent, there's activities for all ages & ability levels, they provide the equipment, and the Grille has delicious food. We rented a 3-bedroom condo for two nights to attend the Lutsen 99ner mountain bike race. The condo was spacious and had everything that we needed. The location could not have been better and the view from the deck of the condo was awesome! Pros: Check in was a breeze and every employee we encountered was very helpful. I'd like to give Mike from Bluefin Grille a huge shout-out. What a fantastic employee and he can make some seriously good drinks! The property was very well cared for and they have a ton of free things for you to do. They have complimentary coffee with creamers in the condo. Cons: We never could get the temperature in the 2nd floor of the condo right...it was warm and stuffy the whole time so we had to sleep with the windows open which is a little noisy from the waves crashing on the beach and the seagulls trying to wake everyone up at 5am. read more

Spectacular views in a relaxing setting. Bluefin is a special place. Nestled right on the shore of Lake Superior, the resort boasts some of the most peaceful sunrises coupled with the sound of crashing waves. Ahhh, total relaxation. That is, until parents let their hyped up children loose. Perhaps you could offer a few adult-only weeks in the summer, Bluefin? Just a suggestion. :-) There are a variety of room options available from which to choose. You can select a condo with a full kitchen and make your own meals, choose a room with a gorgeous window view or balcony, or select a smaller room that's generally just for sleeping. Prices are very expensive in the summer months so even the simple bed in a small room with no view and no air conditioning will give your credit card a good hit. They do provide a fan for the room but when temperatures hover at 80 in the room at night, it's not much help. I recommend a room facing the lake so you can open the windows for air circulation. If you're lucky, you can find a nice peaceful location on the property to watch the sun rise or set. During the day, there's lots to do. Read a book by the shore, take a day trip up to Grand Marais (donuts!!), take advantage of the on-site activities like bike riding, or visit any number spectacular hiking parks. Bluefin truly is in a great location with easy access to sites you just can't find in the cities. When you stay at the resort, you'll be treated to nightly campfires with s'mores by the shore, occasional BBQs, and some tasty food at the Bluefin Grille. There's even free wi-fi at the resort. Need some groceries or other essentials? Head to the general store across the street. Want to climb a mountain? Head down the road and hike Carlton Peak. So much to do, so much to see. Bluefin is a must-visit North Shore location. read more

I'll be honest I am a big fan of this place. I have been coming here since I was in college and have never had a bad time. This is the first time I have stayed in a cabin on the north side of the resort so I was a bit concerned..... But it is just as nice. You can not beat the sitting on the porch listening to the waves crash on the rocks. Overall lutsen is a great place to come relax for a long weekend, and I would recommend bluefin as a great place to stay. They also have daily activities! Which end up being a good time and the outdoor hot tub/pool is a must in any season. I'd recommend hiking around the temperance river, it is so pretty in all seasons. If you decide to bring a backpack with some adult beverages I would recommend that as well! Only other thing I would add is the restaurant is good! We decided to do Bluefin Bay in July for our honeymoon. We were surprised at how beautiful it was on the lake, having never been, and this lakefront property had spectacular views. It looked and felt like the coast of Maine (barring the absence of salt water). The sound of the waves crashing outside our room window every night and morning was extremely relaxing. And you just couldn't beat the weather--75 to 80 degrees and sunny every day. Great breeze off the lake. We stayed in a guest room elite (16B), in the middle cluster of buildings on the lakeside. Now, the only thing that turned my review into a four-star review instead of a five-star one was that this room might need some updating. Wood-paneled walls, older couch/lounge chair and carpet, pretty small bathroom (though it did feature an adequate two-person jacuzzi tub--the jets weren't great--the shower was very small as was the sink/counter area). One of our windows wouldn't shut completely the first night, but maintenance was very speedy to fix it. Very comfortable bed. Overall the room looked like it was built in the 1970's and hadn't been updated. We were fine with the rustic charm of it, but for the price you pay, perhaps you would expect a little more updated accommodations. Also, LOVED the view from our balcony, but it was way too small and the balcony/outside of the building definitely needs new paint. It's not peeling (much) but it's worn. So when we go back--and we will--we will pay the extra money to stay in one of the newer condos. It will definitely be worth the money. There are plenty of included extras at this resort which, if you take advantage of them, make it a great value for active vacationers. This includes free guided kayaking, hiking expeditions, and nature programs; s'mores at the campfire every night, music on Friday nights, and free rentals of bikes (even kids' bikes), helmets, hiking gear, free water bottles. This was really great. We truly enjoyed our kayak expedition on Caribou Lake with Mike (usually they go on the great lake but it was too choppy that day). We love Tofte--north shore Minnesota has a small-town, woodsy feel. It is within short driving distance of many hiking trails on the Superior Hiking Trail. Also quick ride to Lutsen and a half-hour drive to Grand Marais/Gunflint Trail. Just a really excellent location. Food: Two restaurants within walking distance. Their Bluefin Grille is the more pricey/formal option. We had one dinner there and it was delicious, though pricey (about $70 for two). The Coho Cafe had excellent wait staff and delicious pizza (Call of the Wild!). Local beer. Tab there was about $35 for two. Both places' dinner hours end at 9 p.m., which was a little rough for us, but the wait staff was very accommodating and didn't rush us. Also the Bluefin has a bar menu with a few dinner items from 9 p.m. - 12 a.m. Their bacon cheeseburger was great. read more

This is our fourth stay at Bluefin Bay and first time taking our two daughters here. We've always enjoyed our stay and the guest services are wonderful to talk to and they are always happy to answer questions. With this reservation, we booked for four nights and when we checked in on the first night, we were given a room that allowed pets and my husband had put down we didn't own pets but he forget to include in the comments that we both are allergic to cats and dogs so needless to say I had a reaction to the pet hair that was all over the one bedroom condo we had. Luckily, we contacted the guest services in time that they were able to switch is to a no pets allowed room the following morning. They went above and beyond and upgraded us to a two-bedroom condo which worked out great for us to be able to have separate bedtimes for our daughters. We had a kitchenette, fire place, and everything was furnished we just need to fill the fridge and cook our own meals. Having the lakeshore view good and bad. The sunset and sunrise view were spectacular but it also means for an early morning wake up call from mother nature of the sunrise. So if you have small children or want to sleep in a bit, remember to bring some form of room darkener to help everyone sleep in longer in the morning and going to bed early or on time in the summertime. We like that they also offer various activities for both adults and kids as well as indoor and outdoor pool with equipment to check out for each of the season's activities. It's so cool that they do a winery tour shuttle a couple times a week. We will definitely return again and maybe during the summer since we've only been here in the winter, fall or early spring. read more

Moving up to the Midwest from the South, I'm finding there's so much to explore. I was looking for an affordable option for a last-minute planning "Spring Break" vacation for my husband and I. Came upon this resort on my search and I couldn't un-see it. The views are just gorgeous and looked like a great location for getting around to the many state parks Minnesota has to offer along the North Shore. They had a great offer "Winter 4 for 3", so jumped on that deal for our vacation. They have 3 facilities: Bluefin, Surfside, and Temperance Landing. Wish we had more in our budget to spend on a lake view room/kitchen/patio, but we chose the "Hillside Guestroom." Our unit was 65C out of Bluefin Bay, so we had a view of the parking lot/back of Coho Cafe. It's a small unit (200-something sq ft), but was perfectly enough for us. (I did not take any pictures because there isn't really anything exciting about the room itself.) There are plenty of options if you're a couple, pair or group of friends, family gathering. Just note that depending on your facility also affects the access to facilities. We did enjoy the outdoor hot tub/pool. There was also an exercise room (treadmill, exercise bike, ellipitcal) and sauna available for use. Walked along the lake walk several times-- it's really a beautiful location. They have some DVDs to borrow. We definitely made use of their complimentary recreational rentals (ice trekkers, hiking poles)! If you're into skiing, they also have those options. The time of year was too late for the ice rink, but they also have skates to borrow as well. They do have additional amenities (tennis court, campfire area) and activities (guided hikes, wine shuttle) that we did not partake in. We spent most of our days out, but services were friendly and helpful if we did have any questions. And overall the facilities were clean which is hugely important to me. The dining areas that were open for the season (Bluefin Grille and Coho Cafe) are pricey options. But if you have it in your budget or really just want to relax in the resort, those restaurants serve decent food. We brought our own snacks, opted to eat-in or travel further out to save on food as our main goals were to explore the North Shore, soak up spectacular views, and then rest up in the resort. It faces east, so be ready for gorgeous sunrises. It sounded like a lot of the other guests there were not first-timers to Bluefin Bay, and I can see why! We were definitely happy with our stay and would look to vacation with them again. read more

Bluefin Bay is my absolute favorite place to stay near Lutsen, MN. I have stayed in many other resorts in the area, and Bluefin Bay Family of Resorts sets the bar high. The Grande Superior Suite 69B is my personal favorite. The room includes a wet bar, plush bed, wood-burning fireplace, a jacuzzi with views of the lake, and a wonderful little balcony overlooking the cove. Each staff member I've encountered has been pleasant and helpful, and the nearby Coho Cafe and Bluefin Grille have amazing food (the pizza at Coho and steaks at the Grille are my favorite). The resort features plenty of amenities including: rental gear (snowshoes, bikes, cross country skis, and more), guided hikes, shuttles to the nearby ski slopes, and a lakeside bonfire with s'mores most nights. All-in-all, this is a wonderful resort to "get away from it all" for awhile. read more

Hot damn, if you're looking for a luxurious getaway of any kind get thee to Bluefin Bay. I wanted to do something up on the North Shore for our anniversary, so I searched through the myriad lodgings available. Bluefin was pricey but they were offering a three for two night deal, which seemed reasonable. Also, I was sold on the outdoor pool and hot tub. Our room - an elite guestroom - overlooked the bay and also had a hot tub with picturesque views of Lake Superior. Otherwise, it was a pretty standard room. It got a bit cold but there was a ceramic heater in there and I overheard Guest Services dealing with a lot of those calls, so it must be common. Still we had plenty of blankets in the room so it was a minor thing. No kitchen in our room, but there was a microwave, mini fridge/freezer, and coffeemaker. They offer a lot of services; free guided adventures, craft hour for the kids, and free rental of seasonal equipment like skis and snow shoes in the winter, kayaks and canoes in the summer. Nightly campfire, ask for free s'mores materials at Guest Services. Because the rates are a bit expensive, you should take advantage of all this shit! We went on two guided hikes; one was supposed to be a cross-country skiing trip but the weather was horrible. It was cool that we did a hike instead of cancelling completely. Our guide Tom was really nice. One interesting thing was that housekeeping does not come daily, only when asked. That was nice for us since we like privacy but if you're expecting it automatically don't get all put out. I'm sure they've walked on enough people boning to institute this new policy. TVs are not HD so don't plan on bringing your Chromecast or Firestick. But there is great Wifi throughout the resort. The only other thing I want to highlight is the OUTDOOR HOT TUB. Not a big deal in the summer, but winter exponentiates the Cool Factor. They have glass screens to block the wind but you get a view of the lake. If you get there round sunset, it's pretty awesome. Feel free to bring a drink but for obvious reasons, NO GLASS DUMMIES. Which some people did and I was like "What the hell. Don't ruin it for the rest of us." Check the website for good deals. Bring bottled water since it tastes weird out of the tap. Also bring snacks or other foods if you don't want to spend a lot of money eating out. read more

For a summer wedding weekend getaway, Bluefin was a fantastic venue against a picturesque backdrop of Lake Superior. The resort boasts well-kempt rooms, an array of free activities to participate in (guided kayaking was the group favorite), lakeside bonfires, outdoor swimming pool and hot tub, accommodating and friendly staff, and two enjoyable restaurants. The three bedroom suite we stayed in had a fireplace, lakeside porch, master suite with Jacuzzi tub, and full size kitchen. Despite the somewhat high price tag, the room was well worth it for the comfort and setting made our stay on the North Shore that much more enjoyable. For the wedding piece of the weekend, the wedding party took photos just a couple miles away from the resort at Temperance State Park. The ceremony was held at a lakeside location at Bluefin in which Bluefin staff took care of setting up chairs and a microphone for the officiant to use. Following the ceremony, the reception was held in the upstairs section of Bluefin Grille, which was decorated by the wedding party earlier in the day. The social hour consisted of a delicious spread of stuffed mushrooms and bruschetta catered and staffed by Bluefin Grille. Dinner was also catered by Bluefin Grille with fish and steak plated options that were both delicious. A small reception was then held in a room located next to the workout facility in which we had free range in decorating and activities. Bluefin is a great option for people who are looking for North Shore wedding venues; the setting is breathtaking, the staff is accommodating, the catering by Bluefin Grille is top-notch, and, for those who are interested, it's easy to have a more DIY wedding. For a non-wedding vacation, I would definitely consider staying at Bluefin Bay again for a relaxing and slightly extravagant (aka more expensive and amenity heavy) getaway. read more

Our room was nice, if not a bit cramped. We had a condo type room, one bedroom with a full kitchen and a fireplace. However the bedroom made us both feel like we were sleeping in a coffin. There was barely room to walk on either side of the bed, and no dresser, so we were unable to unpack our suitcase, which seemed silly to us since we were staying for a week. We ended up sleeping most nights on the pull out couch in the living room which suited us just fine because we were able to crack the patio door and listen to the waves crash on the rocks every night, as well as watch the fire in the fireplace. We attempted to make appointments through the Bluefin Reception Desk for the Waves of Superior Spa. It was advertised to us through our Romance Package (did I mention this was our honeymoon?). That was a mistake. We ended up going to the spa on the wrong day, and when we came back the next day, they forgot we wanted mudpacks with our massages and were unable to complete our request. When we ate in the Bluefin Grille, it was absolutely delicious and the waitstaff was very friendly. However, the quality of the food went down drastically, to the point of inedibility, when we tried ordering in. I see most of the other reviews of Bluefin are positive, so maybe we caught them on a bad week, but we won't be recommending Bluefin to friends and family for honeymoons or other long stays. read more

This place was amazing. My husband and I stayed here the night after exiting the BWCA to break up the drive back to Minneapolis. The sauna room & hot tub melted away all the soreness from our muscles, and the jacuzzi suite facing Superior was absolutely stunning. Every staff member we encountered was friendly & helpful, and the both the grill & cafe have amazing food (I'd highly recommend the breakfast sandwich delivered to your room in the morning.) Although we didn't have time, there was also an impressive array of activities to participate in. Anything from s'mores nights to guided hiking to meeting a local porcupine. We'll definitely come back and stay longer. read more

The place is beautiful! My boo and I went there for a long weekend and had such a fabulous time. We went with another couple, so had the opportunity to see two rooms. Our room smelled like a nursing home, but after being in the room for a few minutes you became immune to it, so no biggie. The hot tub was nice, it was quite odd that there was a window you had the option to open so you can see the outside while bathing.. however we had many people walking by our back door to observe the nature, so my boo wasn't so fond of me trying to get my view on while getting my clean on. The place was fully furnished which was nice. It was nice to not have to worry about silverware, can openers, etc. And they had a dishwasher. It was such a comforting/homie (i know that's not a real word, it should be) feeling. The bedroom was super small, with limited space to put our stuff. But honestly it's just a relaxing experience that, the little stuff doesn't matter. WE went on an amazing hike, brought along some beer and cider incase we got parched (We did). Spent a day in Grand Marais, an evening in the outside heated hottub, and there were plenty of games in the main lobby and our room to keep up entertained all night. We were all ready to check out 12:00pm on Sunday when my love realized he couldn't find the keys. The workers let us stay in our room for another 2 hours to search our bags multiple times and were willing to help us. That situations sucked ass, but the service was nice! -M read more

We love Blue fin bay! The staff is wonderful and extremely helpful, while being right on the North Shore-it is a great getaway! Check in has always been quick and efficient, our condos have been completely prepared and welcoming. Literally feet from Lake Superior, waking up to the sun and crashing waves is relaxing and makes us feel at home! The multiple activities that are available, pools and trails make the stay well worth the drive. Prepare for your stay, as there is a small store with grocery items across the street. We appreciate the full kitchen in the condos to cut down on having to eat out for every meal. Multi visits by our family-hoping to take a romantic getaway for just the two of us as well. This is not a 3 star experience. Yes it is beautiful there but at $300 a night you should be able to expect stellar customer service and clean and functional room. That is not what I experienced. It started out in check in when they want the whole stay paid for up front. That has never happened at any hotel before, I thought that was checkout. Then I get to the room and the sofa bed was not made. I called and asked for someone to come and make it. They said they would drop off the bedding. I told them that I didn't feel I should have to make up the bed as a guest. Staff dropped a plastic bag of sheets with one pillow at the outside door. Really? I made my bed myself. Mad but oh well try to get on with it. Had a good day in Grand Marais, made dinner and went to bed. At 2 am water was pouring through the bathroom ceiling, my sister almost fell on the wet tiles. We ended up putting out pans and mopping up with all the towels. It finally stopped at 330 am. The bathroom electrical was not working on the lights and fan. Don't think that was safe. Anyway we were done with it. Packed up the second night of our four day stay and drove the four hours home. They only charged us for one day but that doesn't pay for the time, the disappointment, the gas or the food. The north shore usually brings me peace. Maybe you might get that at Blue Fin but I didn't. Three stars? Not hardly. read more

Awesome location but furnishings are getting a bit dated. Peaceful quiet time with my wife for a couple days mid week. They ran a special just after we got here so if you look at their website last minute you might find some deals. Two days was perfect but a bitter than that I think I would look for more energy. read more

Unlike a lot of Minnesotans, we do not own a cabin. We like to be free to go to different places and not have the responsibility of a cabin. However, we do feel as if Bluefin Bay Resort is like "our cabin" get away! We usually stay 2-4 times a year for about 4 nights and we really enjoy the units with kitchens, hot tubs and views of Lake Superior! The off season has deals on rooms. When we are up there we also love the outdoor hot tub as long as it is at least 30 degrees or warmer. If it is too cold the Resort has an indoor pool and hot tub. In the summer there are tennis courts and bike and kayak rentals! In the winter there are cross country ski rentals. Many of these items are included in your resort fee. They also have two restaurants on site and an outfitter. Being up in Tofte there are tons of places to hike or snow shoe and you're not far from Lutsen Ski area. Staff can help you with info on places to go and activities to do! We also love to end our day with a fire in our wood burning fireplace in our unit but if you have a unit without one you can enjoy the fire they make on the beach with free supplies to make s'mores! For your convenience there is a small grocery store and liquor store across the road and a gas station. We love BFB and plan on many more stays in the future! read more

Tofte is a blink and you could miss it kind of town in Northern Minnesota. Upon recommendation of a co-worker, this native Michigander embarked on a Great Lake-side rest and relaxation week. My boyfriend and I went in May where the high was still a chilling 40 degrees, but the off season prices made our stay quite affordable. We reserved a room with jacuzzi. Not being a soaker, this added amenity was well worth the money. The tub faced Lake Superior with a big bay window in the bathroom for some picturesque ambiance. It was only the two of us, but the room was huge with a pull out couch a mini-fridge and a few kitchen necessities (read: corkscrew and glass wine glasses). There are larger condo-like facilities that families rent by the week that involve multiple-levels and full kitchens for bigger groups. I did explore the laundry room and the lobby store had videos and games for guest check-out. There is an indoor pool and gaming area along with tennis and volleyball courts. ***If you decide to make a reservation, do take time to peruse the floor plans. Each "room" seems to have a different layout with a different amenities included. There isn't a lot of "civilization" in the vicinity, but the numerous state parks allow for some tranquil hiking time. Lack of social contact may make some feel batty; Grand Marais is only a quick 1/2 hour up Hwy 61 and has more of a Michigan cottage town kind of feel - marinas, mom & pop shops, ice cream parlors, tourist souvenir stores. For the more adventurous, take MN-1on a winding scenic drive northwest 2 hours to Ely, a BWCAW canoe outfitting town. http://www.ely.org/ Most of the seasonal activities at Bluefin Bay itself were not available considering the time of year we elected to go. However, for simply an R & R type vacation we had a fabulous time. Extra charming note: Our room had a communal journal that encouraged guests to write about their positive experiences at Bluefin to leave for the next visitors. We had arrived exhausted from driving and felt the extra time to Grand Marais was simply too much to bear. We've been staying at Bluefin Bay since I was a kid. And as I age, I enjoy it even more. We came for a last minute winter get-away and had an amazing time. The amazing restaurant (it's really, really good), proximity to ski trails, both cross country and downhill, and all the amenities, make this place just a gem. read more

The Grand Superior Master Suite is flippin' amazing! Great room for two. A whirl pool hot tub and wood burning fire place is included. The Bluefin Grill has good drinks, food, and music. Liquor stores close early (8pm). Closest smoke shops are in Duluth and likely Thunder Thunder Bay (incase you drop your bowl). There's tons of fun stuff to do up in the area. Check out Eagle Mountain but be prepared for dirt roads and a hike to highest point in Minnesota (around 2300 feet above sea level). Grand Marais has a lot to offer as well. We stayed up here for or annual north shore trip. It was our first time at Bluefin, and we stayed at one of the surfside rooms. We loved the beautiful views and how spacious the townhome was. The food at Bluefin Bay Grill was wonderful. The wild rice duck chowder was particularly good. We also liked all the included amenities like biking, tennis, kayaking, etc. My only complaint (but it's a big one) is that the place could have been a little cleaner. The floors felt grimmy, and there was something left in our bathroom's trash bag from the previous occupants. read more

We ate at the restaurant because we were staying at the condos on site. We ate upstairs in the finer dining area. This place needs woks in many ways. First the views are beautiful. The decor is sadly outdated. The service was friendly but not real knowledgeable. The food, well I was told at the area golf course that it had changed to a more Scandinavian flair and they were right. But not in a good way. Bacon on a cheese burger was just barely cooked, ugh. The bacon on the salad was so fatty that it could not be eaten. Over all for a place that touts itself as a premier restaurant on the lake it is not. I think it's resting on reviews from years past. A better place to go is the Lutsen lodge. I did have the Walleye, a last minute substitution and while tastey it was over cooked, and the sides were pretty bland. read more

Had a great time here. Lots of nice amenities, went Kayaking, bike riding, campfires and they have 2 pools. Also they have yoga and fishing just didnt work with are schedule to try. The staff was nice and room were good. One complaint is they have the worst pillows, super firm made for some rough sleep, recommend bringing your own. The room view was amazing and the kids loved the loft area. read more

My ratings often coincide with expectations. My expectations were very high. This is not a $100 a night stay, this is not a $200 a night stay. The overall service is quite good. Not in your face type of service, which is actually a good thing. The place overall is beginning to show its age. When you're paying a few hundred dollars a night for several nights I am very alert to certain things that are lacking. My first walk up to our door showed me dry leaves and spider webs around the outside. Inside it was clean and nice, but a little tight in space for a two bedroom. The bed was awful. A double bed, we are used to a king so that was part of it maybe. But the mattress was like it was laying on a rock. Old I would think. Could hear our neighbors a little too loudly a little too late into the night I should mention as well. Must have been playing drunken twister the way it sounded. Maybe I'm jealous. Location could not be improved on, less than a football throw to Lake Superior. We were there to relax and hike the many trails in the area and that was accomplished. We made no use of the multiple pools or exercise equipment. There are 3 places to eat at the resort. The Blue Fin Grille the dinner spot. We dined there twice, once for lunch and once for dinner. The lunch was quick and excellent food. The dinner was extremely slow. We were sat down and ignored for quite some time. Then water was brought. Then more waiting. Then the manager came over and took a drink order. After we were nearly done with them the waitress showed herself. We had walleye and whitefish, and both were good. This can happen anywhere, they seemed short staffed. But, still a negative when it happens to you. Another place to eat is at the High Shores part of the resort. A café that serves lunch. We stopped at noon, not one table was seated. Nobody at the register either. They were open, but you could have fooled me. Place smelled like chlorine, not meat loaf. Kind of sterile so we left. The 3rd place to eat on the property is their bakery, which serves through the lunch time as well. Nice place with outdoor seating. We arrived first morning with our dog, but when we asked if we could sit outside with him and order food we were told "sure, but the chairs will be all wet". Which they were, with no offer to mitigate that. We went elsewhere. I would go 3 1/2 stars if possible, but it's not. 3 stars over 4 in my one time experience. I would possibly stay here again, it wasn't that bad. I will more closely examine other possibilities next time though. read more

We stay here at least three nights every year. This summer we stayed for a week and still love it! You can't find better views! They've updated the rooms and condo's while keeping the same charm. The employees at Bluefin are by far the best of any hotel we've stayed at. Always friendly, smiling, helpful and personable. Spending a little extra money to stay is worth it. Even the guy who came to fix our light bulb and help with the DVD player was great. Take advantage of the activities. The guided kayaking tour is so much fun and Yarrow was very knowledgable and fun. The tennis courts are great, they could use a second one but people are kind when there are waiters. The pools are great too, the outdoor pool is small but the views are amazing. The indoor pool gets a little chilly but it is a lot larger. The water and pool buildings are always clean. Lots of grills to make dinner. I wish we could have done the fishing charter and sailing, but our schedule just didn't allow. I did hear that they were amazing though. The nightly S'mores campfire was a lot of fun, you meet some great people and there are some programs going on during them. Take the time to talk with the people who put those on, they have great stories and love to talk about what they do. The BBQ is okay, for $15 you'd expect a little more, but that's okay. It's still a lot of fun. This is a great location for anything. Hiking, State Parks, Lutsen, Grand Marais are all an easy day trip. The staff will help you find something to do if you're at a loss. No A/C, but turn on the fans and open the windows and the breeze will help you out. read more

After a few years of family and friends going up to Bluefin Bay, we wanted to experience it for ourselves. The drive along Lake Superior on our way up was absolutely beautiful. When we arrived we had a very friendly man help us with check-in. We had planned this trip to celebrate our first anniversary, so we purchased the honeymoon package. When we got to our room the views of the lake were incredible, but the rose petals and champagne that were supposed to be there when we arrived were not in our room. After dinner, my husband went and spoke with guest services. Their impecible guest services is why we will absolutely return and tell our friends and family to venture up to Tofte. They were sincerely apologetic, were willing to have our room done up if we were planning on going out later (we opted out of this, we had already had dinner and weren't planning on leaving again), they removed the cost of the rose petals, which was all we were expecting, but then they still brought the champagne, lowered our rate, and were absolutely incredible. We had dinner at Bluefin Grille one night and had breakfast at Coho Cafe during our stay. The food at both places was delicious. I would definitely recommend coming here if you want a romantic getaway. read more
