We highly recommend a stay at Surfside! We've stayed in both A and B units and recommend both types. The views of Lake Superior are exactly what you come to the North Shore for, and with their expansive waterfront you are able to really take in the views & experience staying on the lake - no matter which building or unit you're in. The common spaces offer a large pool (deepest end is 4'), a large hot tub, sauna, gym, laundry, and sometimes group fitness that varied on the weekly schedule (COVID safe). When you check-in be sure to visit with guest services regarding the events they have scheduled for the week & what you can take in for free. They'll also be able to assist with bike rentals, etc. Be sure to let them know what you're interested in because they're more than willing to help. Also, don't skip the free s'mores packs for the nightly campfires! Guest services hours are very accommodating. The A unit we stayed in on our recent trip was impeccably clean, and even though it was a "pet friendly" unit you wouldn't be the wiser. The cleaning staff does a great job. The linens were all good quality - including great quality towels! The views are outstanding from both the first and second floors, and the unit furnishings allow for comfortable lounging to take it all in. We did some cooking while at Surfside and the kitchen was fully outfitted with all standard cooking utensils, pots, pans, dish ware, and drink ware. They provide dish soap, kitchen towels, and dishwasher tabs so cleanup is a breeze. The beds were super comfortable, too! The whole unit is quite spacious and would be comfortable with 6 adults, and if you combined it with a B unit you could be comfortable with 8 adults. The living spaces are outfit with great, comfortable furniture, but in the colder months I recommend bringing a throw blanket or two so it can be even more cozy! We really love Surfside and their attention to the guest experience. It's a quaint, peaceful resort stay that offers some nice perks: nightly bonfires that were never crowded, a playground for kiddos, an ice skating rink in the winter months, and so much more. The accommodation is great. Wonderful townhouses Lot of decks. Comfortable beds. Good showers. Very deluxe accommodations. They do have activities such as biking, hiking, kayaking which are included. Not a ton of dining options and not a lot of groceries in the area so you may want to bring your groceries with you, but all your pans, plates, and utensils are included. The view can't be beat. No beach nor real access to the water but if you are in the area I would not hesitate to stay here. We had six very comfortable in a three bedroom. Great space to hang out in. Always a great stay at Surfside. My wife and I have made this an annual early fall trip. We get the King suite with the hot tub, fireplace, kitchenette, and tv with the view of Lake Superior right outside the windows. We wake up early to the sun rising over the lake, make a cup of complimentary Caribou coffee or Tazo tea, and walk down the hill to sit on the cliffs to welcome in the morning. Surfside is home to the only Spa on the North Shore, offers free bike rentals to enjoy the Superior hiking trail which is right across the street, and is only about a mile south of its sister resort, Bluefin Bay. Anyone staying at the newer, more modern and updated Surfside can also enjoy all of the benefits offered to the patrons at Bluefin. When we head to the North Shore, we always stop at the Temperance River for a short hike of shoreline and waterfalls, have breakfast and lunch at the CoHo Cafe, and spend a day in Grand Marais. You won't be disappointed if you book here. They even offer some rooms to people traveling with pets. We're already looking forward to next year! read more

We just returned home from our trip to Surfside/Bluefin Bay and we are already talking about when we can go back! My husband and I have been going there since we were dating, more than 14 years ago are enjoying creating new memories together as a family. The amenities are great! They have truly thought of everything to help make the stay relaxing and enjoyable. My husband and I enjoyed relaxing in the hot tub while the kids swam in the pool. We played tennis/ pickleball as a family, rented movies, books and games, roasted marshmallows and made s'mores (all of which are provided by the resort). They also have bikes for the family and kayaks you can rent as part of your stay. The north shore is so beautiful! We went on several hikes and rode the gondola up to Lutsen. We went to the Waves of Superior Spa at surfside for relaxing massages and I had a fabulous facial with as lady named Trish. The condos are modern and spacious, yet cozy. We enjoyed the view of Lake Superior from our balcony every morning as we enjoyed our coffee/breakfast. I'm telling you, if you go once-you'll be back! Oh, and before I forget, you have to check out Bluefin Grille! The food is fantastic! My husband said it was one of the best steaks he has ever had and I can honestly say the same about the walleye and wild rice dinner. The kids both had the crispy chicken sandwich and have said that they wished we had those somewhere here in the Cities. Also, their cheese curds were some of the best we've had- I'm talking state fair good! I'm thankful we discovered their cheese curds on the last night or I'm afraid we would've packed on more than a few extra lbs during our week-long stay. Love this place! We missed the outdoor pool/hot tub overlooking Lake Superior, which you will have if you stay at Bluefin, but we loved the modern condos and everything else about Surfside. This was the most relaxing trip we have taken in years. The staff is so helpful and will go out of their way to make you feel right at home. Check it out! You'll be so glad you did. read more

My family spent a weekend here in late October, 2014, the first night started off really good and something went wrong beyond the control of management, Michelle the Sr. manager turned our frown upside down and made our weekend one of the best we ever had. She is a great person and a manager, making sure we were well taken care of and because the way she handled our situation, we are going back there and taking more friends and our parents, the facility is amazing and the view from each room is breathtaking, if you ever want to enjoy the best of Northern Minnesota, should must consider staying here, take this from a guy who hates out doors. Loved our mini-vaca in 7B, with the most stunning winter view! However, during our stay, we rented snowmobiles from another resort for a day. Upon returning them, the resort insisted the damage to their sled was our fault. It was -13 degrees, we certainly didn't hit anything, but there was a crack in the hood that wasn't there before; regardless, they charged my boyfriend $770 for a whole new hood. When we went to check out of Surfside, the receptionist (who we later figured was the owner) asked us about our stay. Our unfortunate situation with a DIFFERENT RESORT came up, and she insisted on taking $100 off of our bill at SURFSIDE! I thought that was beyond generous, combined with the great food, service and scenery, we were very pleased! read more

The best lodging I've experienced on the North Shore! I stayed in a Surfside Master Suite, and everything was fabulous: from the deep, plush, oversized towels in the bathroom to the whirlpool tub with a window directly facing the lake to the size and spaciousness of the room itself. I had a king size bed, mini-kitchen, gas fireplace, whirlpool tub, two chairs that were rockers (bonus!), two leather foot stools, huge closet, and a flat screen tv with a dvd player (at least a hundred dvd's were free to sign out at the Bluefin guest services office). With all of that in one room, you'd think it would be crowded, but it wasn't at all, and I am a claustrophobic person, so you know it was spacious and perfectly laid out. On top of the lodging luxury, the free-to-guests activities are incredible: they provide bikes, kayaks (plus wet suits, life jackets, paddles, etc), guided hikes to local parks, bonfires every evening with s'more fixin's, and more...all gratis to guests. I have already booked another stay for later this year, and I'll be returning for many years to come! read more

We have been here 3 times, during summer and fall. It feels wonderful here. The townhomes are modern and luxurious, which is what we wanted for our Lake Superior visits, as opposed to cabin style. Open the windows and listen to the surf all day! Sit in comfy rocker and take in the fresh air. Beautiful moonlight from the many balconies. Two story windows are the best aspect - you feel like you are on the water. Gas fireplace adds ambience. It manages to feel fairly private for townhomes. Balconies are built in such a way that creates privacy. Only time less private is seeing others walk down the slope to shoreline, and community fire pits. And it is nice to actually have a shoreline - to sit on rocks and get sprayed by the surf, or marvel at the swirling eddies. Tofte is in between towns of Silver Bay and Grand Marais but worth the slight inconvenience of driving 30 mins in either direction when something particular is needed that Tofte/Lutsen doesn't have. read more

After a 10 year absence, my husband and I returned to Bluefin for our Anniversary. This time We stayed at a newer building, called Surfside. As always, the location is amazing, the proximity to the Lake, the sound of the water.. gorgeous! We stayed in 10b, which had a fireplace and a jacuzzi tub, and a king sized bed. Everything looked very nice, as We had come to expect from Bluefin. But, when we went to bed, We were surprised by how uncomfortable the mattress felt and the sheets were rough and poor quality. I'm really sad to complain about this since the entirety of our experience was overall quite positive but if I'm spending the kind of money on a room, that I did here, the bed should feel at least as good as mine at home feels. Kmart quality sheets do not belong on a bluefin Bay bed. A mattress pad would've helped soften the bed up a great deal. Also, one ply toilet paper in a 500.00/night hotel? Sadly, not up to standard. read more
