This being said, they have really nice facilities for the animals and I promise they are cared for. I recently became a volunteer, and I see first hand how well animals are treated. There is just a lot of overturn here since there is currently a shelter overflow in the country. I high recommend grabbing a dog for a daytrip and even turning it into a sleepover!

There are tables to sit and complete an adoption form and staff at the front desk. Guests are invited to view the kitten/cat, dog and puppy/small dog sections on their own. We roamed the cat area the longest. Each cat had a large space with a hidden litter box, bed and play area. The dog area described each animal for adoption and treats were available to slide under the door. I was surprised to learn many of the animals for adoption are only a license fee charge. Puppies and kittens are $100+ due to shots and spay or neuter which is also great. Their website and social media provides good info and you may also inquire about fostering.

On top of that, he said that he was extremely disappointed in the shelter for letting her go home with me like this. He also said it's even worse that they sent me home with her knowing I have another cat, and that she really shouldn't even be in my apartment right now because of how contagious it is. I understand that a pet comes with responsibility, but why would you send me home with a sick kitten? Why wasn't she cared for? Why was she in a cage with other kittens if she's sick and highly contagious? You guys know I have another cat because you asked me if I was still Ranger's owner prior to adopting Scout, so once again, why would you send me home with a sick, highly contagious kitten? Because not only do I have to worry about her well being now, but I have to worry about Ranger's. I waited hours to be seen by that veterinarian today. I paid $98.58 for medication. I have to keep her completely segregated from Ranger for 14 days. When I can't be in the room with her, she cries. She does the same thing when I transport her in her carrier. Given the situation, she's been in and out of it quite a bit these past couple of days. When I give her her medicine, she's scared and clearly hates it. I try to be as gentle as possible, but you wouldn't know that by how scratched up my forearms are. This kitten has been through so much in 4 days and she doesn't understand why. I hate to see her so stressed out, and I wouldn't be surprised if she winds up scared of me because of all this. I'm incredibly disappointed in the negligence your shelter has displayed and I did not at all appreciate the conversation I had with your staff member. Instead of expressing any empathy or concern for either of my pets, she just pointed out notes from the contract. She also tried shifting the responsibility to Feeder's Supply considering that's where I adopted her, but when I picked Scout up she was such a fresh drop-off from the shelter that they didn't even have her paperwork. I honestly really liked this shelter up until this experience. I can't even give you the staff member's name because she never provided it. Where's the accountability?

I thought she needed immediate attention because I thought she had a UTI, if I had known she didn't need immediate attention, I would of crated her and took her to the vet the next day, I also didn't have the funds at the moment, but everyone has to work to get those funds! They came and got the Yorkie and now are telling me I have to apply to get her back! The whole time I talked to the lady at the shelter, she assured me I would get her back if she wasn't chipped or claimed. First come first served. I am the first one to want that baby girl! I guess someone has a family member who wants her! Do not trust these people. If You find an abandoned animal, you take it to get scanned for a chip and post on Facebook about it. We have a cat who was dumped on or near our property a few winters ago. She's an amazing, loving cat who has been trained to serve as a service companion to Sexy Beast (who is allergic to dogs). She is soft and fluffy and sweet and I can not for the life of me figure out what sort of jackass would dump a kitten in the woods during a freezing winter. We have a cat who was adopted from the Kentucky Humane Society. She was surrendered by someone who had too many cats and wanted her to have an indoor home. Thank you, whoever you are. She's a beautiful, loving fluffball and I think she may have actually rendered me human. NAFC Animal Shelter is a top notch facility. The staff are friendly and seem to genuinely care about the welfare of the animals in their charge. The facility is clean and well organized. There is an application process for adoptions. It is painless and helps to ensure that the adopted animals are not being relocated to another crappy situation. Just bring a valid drivers license or photo identification with your correct address. If you already have pets at home, bring current up to date vaccination records for them. Bring proof of home ownership or a current lease (with a contact number for the landlord) and a pet deposit receipt. You can download a copy of the application on the NAFC Animal Shelter website and fill it out before you head over to meet the critters. There are no residency restrictions for adoption and adoptions can be competed the same day. The cost of caring for unwanted animals is significant. The adoption fees help to offset those costs. Each animal is spayed or neutered and receives at least one course of vaccinations, worming, Felv/FIV or Heartworm test, and treatment for fleas. Microchipping is also included in the adoption fee. There's the cost of food and bedding and kennels and cleaning supplies and clerical supplies and laundry and on and on. So, those nominal adoption fees are a full-on bargain. The fees are: Canines: $80.00 Felines under 4 pounds: $60.00 Felines 4 pounds and over: $20.00 You can surrender an unwanted animal during regular hours and must complete some paperwork to help NAFC Animal Shelter facilitate re-homing. Not all cats play well with each other and not all dogs are great with children. These tidbits of information go a long way when looking for a home for a companion animal. You must be a Floyd County, Indiana resident to surrender an animal. NAFC Animal Shelter does euthanize animals. It is a last resort but it does happen. Animals who are too aggressive or sick to be adopted, sadly, are euthanized. Right this minute, NAFCAS is helping with the rescue of 68 Chihuahuas and Chinese Crested dogs who were rescued from a home in Paducah, Kentucky. They'll be assessed by a vet and then adopted out or sent to other rescues or shelters to help with the placements. If you happen to be in need of a little love and loyalty, please consider adopting. If you'd like to help but can't make room in your home for a pet, donations are always welcome. They are incredibly strict on their volunteering and foster rules. I told them I was taking a dog out to go hiking, and they gave me a obese dog with 2 bananas and 2 collars around its neck that were kind of tight, and told me I couldn't take anything off, needless to say we "hiked" for 20 min before I thought the poor guy was gonna die and then we sat in my car for 2 hours. I know everything helps, but I prefer to go to the metro services to volunteer since they do a better job matching you with animals and even let you do sleepovers!

Humans are frequently awful. They do things to each other and the rest of earth's inhabitants that…read morejust don't make sense. I have a place in the country and, periodically, someone will abandon their cat or kittens or a pregnant mama cat on my land. They seem to believe that dumping these poor creatures into a strange environment to fend for themselves is somehow more humane than surrendering them to a shelter. It isn't. They starve. They get eaten by predators. They get hit by cars. They fight (resulting in injuries) and breed (faster than you can imagine) and get sick (lots of respiratory infections and parasites). People like me can't stand to watch that happen so we feed them. We make sure they have water. We trap them and take them to Alley Cat Advocates to get them spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and vet checked. We bring them right back to where they've been dumped or wound up after having the bad luck of being born feral. They live healthier, longer, more humane lives with someone looking after them as barn cats or community cats. My neighbors are aware of which cats have been TNR'd (Trapped/Neutered/Returned) by the universal ear tip that Alley Cat Advocates gives them. This helps us make sure that we don't send the same cats in for care repeatedly. Some of the neighbors help out by putting out feeding stations and shelter boxes. It's a community effort. Without the support of Alley Cat Advocates, we would not be able to help these animals. The work that they do to make the lives of community cats safer and healthier is crucial to the successful population control of stray and feral cats. We would be overrun with cats at this point without their low cost (sometimes free) spay and neuter services and several of the animals that have been dumped here would have suffered unnecessary illness and injury. If you're looking after a stray kitty or you've got a furry squatter in your yard or the parking lot of your business, give them a call. They can help you get that little feline snipped and vaccinated so that you don't end up with an entire colony (like me).
