Reviews With Photos - Duffy's Dog Training Center

From Duffy's "Ten Natural Steps to Training the Family Dog"

I cannot say how glad I was to see the recent reviews and Facebook posts about the differences experienced at Duffy's between what is said and actually done in practice. My experiences too relate to information and observations during evaluations and lessons. Multiple worrisome observations stood out. One trainer in a class, young (20s), tall and thin. I was embarrassed to hear the frequent use of f*** scattered throughout the instruction. He also frequently referred to other customers as his "over the hill, red-neck" customers. Not very flattering or professional. Does everyone get a mocking title? Looking into the room, he was riding around in a wheel chair while he taught. Wasn't sure whether a" professional" playing around in a wheel chair was more lazy, unprofessional or offensive. During an evaluation, a different 'trainer" came out of the back with a cute, happy golden retriever. She (the trainer) was middle aged with black hair and heavy makeup. The dog was excited to see it's owner, but when she jumped excitedly toward the owner, the employee pulled and hung her into the air with the leash and collar, while laughing as if a joke. Upset, the owner grabbed the leash and quickly left. Ask to tour the facility. Ask to see the training schedule and records. This day they had over 40 dogs. The log shows how many times the dogs are trained that day, for how long and by which trainer. There isn't an actual schedule to ensure things are on track. Training notes were very short check marks. Middle afternoon, none of the dogs had been trained more than once, some not at all. The longest was 20 minutes. They said they also consider walking for the bathroom as training time too. Owners are told their dogs are trained between 10:00 - 3:00. Also, told there are usually 5-6 trainers each day. Do the math. Five hours x 6 trainers = 1800 minutes. Divided by say 40 dogs - at most 45 minutes per dog for the day. BUT, the trainers also teach between 2-5 lessons per day at a minimum of 1 hour each. 6 trainers at the low 2 lessons = 720 minutes. Subtract that from the 1800 = 1080 or 27 minutes per dog. If folks are eating lunch or taking breaks, the 20 minutes seems about right for the best case scenario. I asked what happens if the trainers have more lessons or there are more than 40 dogs. They do "the best they can." Speaking of food, look at their Facebook page. Posts only show photos of graduations (not actual training) or food and the staff eating. Either not proud of the rest of the operation or concerned about showing it publicly? I purchased their book for my Kindle. I was surprised having read the comments in the earlier review about the ready use of shock collars up front. There is a "remote program" on the website and in their handouts. In the book, these collars are discussed seemingly in a completely different light. The author and business founder states, "I do believe that electronic collars have a place in dog training, a very specific place to be more exact. They are invaluable for training at great distances, for example, the training of hunting dogs during pointing, retrieving, and holding-at-bay exercises. Remote control collars can be the perfect tool for fine-tuning a high-level competition dog. We've worked with handicapped handlers at the training center who would have no chance of controlling their dogs without electric collars." These don't seem to be inclusive of most pets and their owners. See the pics attached of their training technique. These are directly from the book written by the owner for their training. Again, do not hesitate to visit and tour. Ask to see the dog's training logs. If you're already a customer, ask to see your dog's log, don't just ask how the day went. Watch dogs being trained (outside of lessons). Ask tons of questions, and expect to see what is done behind the scenes. And do a search through Facebook for a post by a customer about her dog named "Zeus."

I have a baby boy German Shepherd puppy, about 4 months old and he has been in Duffy's school for about 4 weeks. My husband and I have done a lot of research on owning a German Shep, this includes buying Matt Duffy's book "Ten Natural Steps To Training The Family Dog". Duffy is awesome, and he knows so much about dogs and dog training! He is really the nicest guy. Owning a dog with such a strong bite and prey drive, it's our responsibility as a pet parent to make sure he is properly trained. He is our second child, we have a cat Chippy. Duffy and his staff also train to help dogs learn how to act around cats or other pets. With the cost of training school it includes boarding, if you go out of town, etc. School is from 7:30am-3pm, M-F. They even have parent night once or twice a week in the evening so you can learn how to work with your pup at home. They have indoor and a large outdoor space. I think it's worth it, I'm very pleased with the facility and I would recommend it to anyone. One last point, which is very important, it's very clean in there!

    Easton during day school!

Duffy's does a great job and really makes sure the owners understand what is going on so they can continue training at home.
