I've never played a string instrument before but had my heart set on learning the banjo. As a young woman of color, I was a bit nervous that I wouldn't fit into this store or be taken seriously without over-explaining myself and where I'm from. (Sadly have this experience very frequently where I'm from in bluegrass country.) But as soon as I walked in, I felt like I was in my pawpaw's garage, full of passion projects and home. John said, "If you can't find something... I'm sure I can't either. But holler anyway." All the pictures you'll find on Yelp are pretty much the whole store. You open the house door almost directly in front of the register, and all the merchandise is in the front and along one side. It's tiny but packed. This store has decades of stock and love in it. There are a ton of music books ranging from beginner to pro for all different styles, not just bluegrass. As John recommended, it's great to just flip through the books to see which style of writing and teaching makes the most sense to you. I picked out the cheapest open-back banjo, and John never tried to upsell me. In fact, he told me all the great things about the instrument I'd picked and walked me through the basics of the style I wanted to learn and even other ones in case I changed my mind. (Which I did lol.) This was all without me having to ask, with genuine excitement. He put so much care and attention into making sure the instrument and I were prepared. It's almost a month later, and I couldn't be happier with my purchase and experience. I will definitely be back for more supplies and recommend to anyone else looking for an instrument or supplies. Stopped in on my lunch break at work today with a few friends and felt very invited right away. They let us play anything we wanted and we had good conversations with the man and woman working. Tons of differnet instruments hanging on the walls and they even had a lot of high end guitars that were kept in cases but told us we were welcome to play them as well. This place is just what it claims to be: a supply store for bluegrass musicians and devotees. They've got a little of everything you'd expect and few things you might not. - Entry-level to high-end acoustic guitars, banjos, mandolins, fiddles and autoharps - At least a couple of upright basses - Instructional books, CDs and DVDs - Bluegrass CDs - Loads of strings for all of the above instruments - What has to be the largest selection of ukuleles I've ever laid eyes on! Add all that to a very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable staff, and you've got a recipe for a great little music shop. I mean, they tolerated several uninformed questions from an idiot (me) about autoharp strings. They can put up with anything. The store is a tad claustrophobia-inducing, but it fun if you can handle it. read more

I haven't stopped in to this jam-packed/packed-with-jams store for some time, but i recall the vibe being very positive and the inventory being quite extensive. I had one of the little rubber key fobs bearing their logo on my key chain for a long time. Maybe i didn't look in the right place, but i don't recall the high-end acoustic guitars that Randy S mentions. Maybe they have upgraded their holdings since i was last there. Bluegrass Music Shop is a great place to get anything you need for an acoustic instrument. It's one of the few places in Central Ohio, that you can hear the amazing sound of a banjo being played. Saturday mornings are a great time to be there, as they have several local folks gathered in the basement for a great bluegrass jam session. I've been playing banjo for a little over a year. John has always been a great help, and suggested a couple of books/CD's that have really helped me get started. I enjoy going in, chatting with all the different personalities, browsing through the almost endless instruments, books, accessories, and treasures. Bluegrass is a great place to get away from the hustle and bustle of life, enjoy beautiful instruments, a cheerful, helpful staff, and some of the best music and hidden talent in the area. read more

I have been coming here since I was a teen. This shop is a must for pickers and fans of bluegrass and also local talent. This shop is a resource and a boost to the area bluegrass community. They have everything from beginner instruments displayed promininently, to the higher end stuff you may have to ask about. From autoharps to celtic drums, and everything in between. Not to mention an great selection of bluegrass music and other genres. They have a jam in the basement on saturdays. It is quite possible to meet the movers and shakers of bluegrass and a familiar face or two from country and other genres of music. Some of the best musicians in the area frequent this place. And the staff is friendly and helpful. The prices are great for such an assortment, it's for the most part a one stop shop. read more

I've had 2 interactions with Bluegrass Musicians Supply (also called Bluegrass Music Supply). First, while looking to purchase a ukulele, I went in there about 6 months ago. Huge selection of ukes, mandolins, banjos, guitars. Shopkeeper (John, I think) was friendly without trying to sell me anything. Suggested I look around and told me to play any of the ukes I wanted to try. He didn't hover and let me look, but was attentive when I had questions. When i asked about instruction books he went to the stacks and finding a $15 book he said "no, you don't need this one" and found a $7 book saying "this one is better". I love the uke which I purchased and the chord book was great. Sadly, the uke bridge separated after 6 months. I took it back to see about a repair. John was friendly as before, didn't ask for a receipt, just immediately said he'd fix it and that it would be under warranty. 1 day later, I had it back, free of charge. No pressure, large selection, friendly and knowledgable staff, good post-sale service, and the price paid was similar to what I saw on the internet. this little store is one of the best music stores ive ever been in. the people are very knowledable and soon become friends. not only have they set up several of my instruments they let me watch and showed me how to do it and what to look out for in other instruments. and if your interested in bluegrass then this store is like heaven!!!!!!!!. just go there on any saturday and give a listen to the jam going on or better yet take your instrument and join in. my family has been going to this store for years and although we have to drive 75 miles to get to it we dont mind at all. read more
