I took my 19 year old jacket russell here a few weeks ago. I knew he was in his last days of life and when the time came, after hours, we called Blue Pearl. Upon arrival they were waiting for us, Houston was taken back and prepped for pain and euthanasia medicine. I have one small complaint, my dog was within minutes of dying. I felt like payment had to go thru first..before we were moved to the euthanasia room. Business is Business..i was also emotional so this is subjective.. the doctor was amazing and very compassionate he explained every step of what this procedure entails. They gave us ample amount of time with Houston after his passing. I picked up Houstons remains less than a week later. Again very compassionate. Today I received a sympathy card in the mail from blue pearl. Not being from CR and needing an emergency vet .. Took my cat Sadie there Saturday evening didn't get seen till 7hours later at 130am. Said Sadie must have fell and hurt herself. Didn't even do blood work, just gave me pain medicine for Sadie and said give it 10days. Monday Sadie was in worse shape took her to a different veterinary clinic. They did blood work right away, found Sadie was in kidney failure and blood in urine. Had to put Sadie to sleep. If blue pearl would have done their job better and testing I wouldn't have been upset becauseof the pain Sadie was in. But I would never go back to that Blue Pearl and I would not recommend Blue Pearl to anyone who has a sick pet. Update Blue Pearl claims i was offered blood work by the nurses and the dr. Which was a complete lie. Not once was i ever offered blood work for my cat. The Dr only offered mri and exray and said probablywont help out, which I did deny after sitting there for 7hours. I never once seen a nutse or talked to a nurse about anything offered to me for my beloved pet. I looked them up, and no surprise, they're a private equity-backed clinic; their first priority is maximizing shareholder profits. I frantically called at around 6pm on a Sunday evening because my 4 year old GSP was vomiting immediately after eating anything all day long and was becoming confused and a bit bloated. They told me he needed to be seen in Des Moines (90 min away) and to call them. I called the ISU location and they said to call BluePearl back and tell them my dog needed to be stabilized before heading to Des Moines. AGAIN THEY REFUSED. I called ISU back and they then called the Cedar Rapids location and they were also told they would not see my dog. We drove 90 minutes to find out my dog had to be put down. Had Blue Pearl done the stabilizing they would have realized that the trip would have been a waste and I could have spent that extra time making my pet comfortable but instead he had to endure a 90 minute trip in pain. Early on a Saturday morning my vet told me to take my dog to blue Pearl in Cedar Rapids because she was going to need hospitalization. I called them in advance and told them what my vet said and they said yes bring her down. As soon as I got there, they ran some test and started an IV and then told me That I owed them $1200 and they were closing that my dog wouldn't be able to stay and I had to go to either Madison Wisconsin or Des Moines. I ended up at ISU veterinary Hospital in Ames. When I called and told them that I was looking for hospitalization, they should've informed me on the phone That they were closing and couldn't take my dog. But I guess it was an easy money grab of $1200 for the same test I was going to have to to pay again as soon as I got to the second hospital. In emailing with the office manager, they do not care. They took one look at my sick Shar Pei and only saw money. 1300 for bloodwork and an ultrasound and then they tried telling me they didn't know if it was infection or cancer. I went and got another opinion and my dog has made a turn for the better. They didn't even try to treat the infection. And told me my only option was to put him down. My elderly dog died a few hours after visiting this location and getting a pain injection. I was handed him to me with him being unconscious and the employee joking how he took the medicine a little harder than anticipated. I wish I would have either been told he was very ill and to have him peacefully put to sleep there or that they would have monitored him until he was awake. Unfortunately, this is the only 24-hour emergency vet in the area. They pretend to care, say all the right words, but don't follow thru with action. Additionally, one of their associates explained to me that they can charge more simply because they have "emergency" in their name. Do everything you can to avoid relying on this business. They use low quality supplies and charge extremely high prices, and then make the pet owner feel incompetent when questioned. I had to make the tough decision to put my sweet elderly dog to sleep. BluePearl Pet Hospital was so kind to me and my dog. They let me hold him and spend as much time as I needed with him. I had him cremated and they sent me a sympathy card in the mail. They made this very sad loss easier to cope with and when I picked up his remains I couldn't help but cry at the sweet paw print they included. **This is really long, but I want to communicate my full experience to others who may be looking for an emergent hospital when their pet needs it.** I just want to praise Blue Pearl for all of the support they provide when I'm worried about my pet. Whenever I call I get a supportive person who calms me down by explaining what could be happening. Also, they don't even charge me when I call, which is amazing in itself. My little guy has seizures and when it first started I was in a major panic. (I've gotten more used to it now and can handle it better on my own because I know how to care for him.) But anyway, I called today for a separate reason. My Yorkie was swallowing hard. I called Blue Pearl to get advice and they were very patient. They told me I could come in or monitor for additional symptoms (and listed what those would be). I decided to monitor him for symptoms and not more than an hour later he had diarrhea and vomiting. (Neither of these are very unusual for him, but having them occur in sequence with the vomiting was concerning.) I called Blue Pearl a second time and explained what was happening. The nurse (I wish I recalled her name) was so knowledgeable. I explained that he had eaten plants outside earlier today and she then explained how the leaves and stems can irritate their throats. She told me I was welcome to come in and get something to soothe his throat or continue to monitor him and take him to my vet in the morning. I appreciated her explaining things and providing options. Right now, I'm monitoring him. Thank you, Blue Pearl! I cannot express how much I appreciate having somewhere to turn after hours (it was between 7 and 8:15 pm) for support! read more

For an emergency vet, it's kind of sad how little they do and how uneducated the staff is. If I would have listened to the "advice" they gave me, my dog and her whole litter of puppies would be dead. I called about 2 weeks before my very pregnant dog gave birth and wanted to make sure they did c-sections just in case. (I like to have everything lined up and be prepared for the worst case scenario.) I was told "no we don't do c-sections" whhhaattt?? Train your staff! That's a pretty common thing in the animal world, ESPECIALLY an emergency after hours vet! The day finally came and she was having some complications (normal vet wasn't open yet) so I called and said "she's been heavy pushing for about an hr and was doing light pushing an hr before that." **Knowing that once a dog starts heavy pushing you want a puppy born with 2 hrs maximum.** Staff told me "it could take 24-48 hours once they start pushing." WHAT?!?! Noooo!!! Do NOT listen to this advice! If your dog has been pushing for more than a few hours and still no puppy, something is very wrong! If I would have listened to that "advice" and there was an actual puppy stuck, it would have killed that puppy, and within 24-48 hrs the whole litter would be dead and mom would have a severe infection that could lead to death! Facebook groups about whelping have WAY better advice than this place! (Which is saying something!!) If you don't know what to do or think something is wrong, join a Facebook group about whelping (The Ultimate Breeding & Whelping Group on Facebook is wayyy more knowledgeable than this vet!) And again, if your dog has started labor, had a temp drop, and started active pushing for more than a few hours, it's time to go in! Do not listen to these "vets" read more

Had a problem Got there at 6pm and dropped her off They ran tests the next morning but it was too late to save my Baby. I can't give this place, the doctors and staff enough praise and appreciation. I walked in with my 5 month old puppy not breathing in my arms after a choking accident. Within seconds they had him in the back and started working on him and getting him on oxygen. The next day blue pearl was scheduled to be closed, one doctor and a couple staff to my knowledge stayed with and watched over him for 2 days while they were closed due to him not being healthy enough to make a trip to another hospital. It was an absolute nightmare that still haunts me to this very day! It was a Wednesday night about 8pm they were the only place open anywhere near us they knew we were rushing in from 40 min away they told us to call once we got there I watched them ignore my phone call to finish their conversation (had to call 2 times) they told us our great Dane had bloat and we had to pay 5k for surgery didn't even offer any type of rescue wouldn't let us.. do you know how much money I have donated to critter crusaders? With blood you have to act fast she was miserable. As I'm saying my goodbyes they wanted to keep coming in with a clipboard to ask how I'm going to pay... when I went to pick up her ashes they threatened the police on me because I was crying so hard. No compassion! If you're in a situation like this please consider calling Anamosa they have an emergency line for after hours! Don't let your pet down and let it haunts you like I did. Edited to add: this Monday morning our dog is vomiting, we have been very attentive to the med schedule. HOWEVER, I am reading the visit description that the receptionist gave us AND - the "vet" took down the WRONG history. The dog DID NOT have bloody diarrhea for three days, she had soft brown moundy diarrhea - which Google kept saying is normal, watch it. Only on FRIDAY did it turn bloody with vomiting that's why we were there. OMG. We so want our money back but more, we want this "vet" to NEVER mistreat an animal and the owners like we were treated. Sat Oct 15: Our regular vet could not see our beloved dog in this sudden emergency situation, recommended this place. Our dog will live. One star for that. The rest was horrible. They stuck us in the exam room, they took our dog who we didn't see for another 5 hours. They never updated us on what they were doing or how she was and we couldn't see her. We sat in that tiny room for THREE HOURS, the "vet" came in to go over blood test results, said she'd be right back with "the goodies" and left. We sat in that room for another ONE HOUR, then I felt like the Geneva Convention wouldn't approve of solitary confinement like this so we went into the waiting room. No one spoke to us. However, we remained genial and hopeful that information would be provided. ANOTHER HALF HOUR and another person gave us a bunch of stuff with ZERO EXPLANATION. The receptionist finally stepped in. She knew we had been waiting, she knew how patient we had been, and she said, we're not going to charge them if the vet didn't consult. Then the vet came out -- FULL OF ATTITUDE! We are at a loss to understand that. What did we do to deserve any of that? She wouldn't give us a diagnosis, wouldn't explain the treatment plan or how to use all the complicated medicine or say what it was for. Said it was all in the discharge papers (spoiler alert: it wasn't). She was really rude and mean. Why? We had been nothing but patient and nice. We waited for HOURS with NO COMMUNICATION, thinking, they're doing their work, they will fill us in. Instead - nothing except hostility from the vet- oh, and a bill for close to $1,000 that - ok, our dog is our world, but geez. Why?? I am thankful to the vet tech/receptionist who -was- kind to us. We asked what we did wrong to deserve this treatment from this vet and she hesitated and said the vet is ... overworked. The vet tech listened to us and did the best she could to make a wrong situation better. Clearly though - there were other people who could have stepped in, who I see signed off on meds, it's not just one rotten vet. NO ONE CARED. Blue Pearl is a national company who clearly doesn't care about animals. I will never go there again and would recommend people do everything they can to avoid needing this overpriced and uncaring place. read more

I would recommend BluePearl to anyone that has an emergency. My dog was swiftly examined and put on treatment the moment I arrived at the hospital. It was about 9pm when I took my dog in. My dog was lethargic, throwing up, high temperature, having trouble breathing, and his tongue was discolored. He was immediately put on oxygen and given antibiotics. After X-rays where taken it was determined he had aspiration pneumonia. The doctor went through everything with me including price and treatment. Emergency vet care is expensive so I was expecting it. However, I felt comfortable leaving my dog in the care of the BluePearl team and the price I paid. Since veterinary medicine is currently experience a shortage BluePearl was closed the next night. However, they quickly set up a transfer to Iowa State Small animal clinic to resume treatment. I was able to take him to Iowa state and he was discharged two days later. Again everything was very professional and transparent. Thank you to the team at BluePearl. read more

But I was assured by a couple different people that Blue Pearl was open 24/7, 7 days a week so I made the drive with my injured pet. There was nobody there. The Vets at Blue Pearl went above and beyond! They were there for my dog when nobody else was. They saved her life and I would trust them over and over again. They knew just what my dog needed. If I could rate 0 stars, I would. Don't waste your time or money. I was treated like poorly when I told the vet that I could not board my pet for fluids and observation due to high cost. The vet was annoyed that I had questions regarding the "diagnosis", and made the issue seem far more serious than it was. This hospital is terrible since it was bought by blue pearl. We have always loved it there years ago. In September I brought my dog for a swollen belly. It ended up being terminal and they blew it off like it was nothing. The dr didn't even break the news to me face to face she called me before I went to pick her back up. They said they made me an appt weeks later at isu. When I called isu there was no appt. We later lost her. Now 6 months later my other dog has a swollen leg/lymphnode and I am willing to pay the big bucks to not have to wait for his normal vet and to get it checked out immediately and they turned me away as I had called them when we were on the way and I was bawling. Made an appointment in order to check a couple of skin warts my dos has and remove them if needed (as I was asked to have my dog fasting starting the night before, I assumed the issue will be taken care of on the spot). Instead of getting an appointment with a dermatologist/surgeon (after describing the issue at hand over the phone), we got an appointment with an internal medicine vet who recommended having the warts removed. Being an internal medicine specialist, she of course couldn't remove it herself which means I need to schedule another appointment and pay a 2nd doctor for it to be treated. I hope the $76 I paid today was worth losing me as a client. read more
