We met at Navy Beach and began around 9am. We stopped for a short respite and science lesson, then returned about noon. I am a birder. Loved the eared grebes and ospreys. Stuart was caring and patient with the other couple, who had never kayaked before. It was a beautiful day on the lake--hot--but lovely. Always bring water and sunscreen. An older gentleman there who I think…read morewas an off duty park Ranger or something told us all about the fault, cases of people falling in, and what to look out for, etc. He said it's more impressive looking from the other side of the main road (going from Mammoth Lakes to Mammoth Mountain), though we couldn't find any signs or trailheads for this part afterwards. Nonetheless this is a pretty neat, quick stop with no hike required to get to it.

Based on the photos, I was expecting this to be more like a cliff with a tall crack in it. In reality, it's more like a very long ditch. If you're into geology, or if you're super impressed by thinking about the earth splitting open, then maybe you should check this out. Personally, I wasn't very moved by this experience. If you didn't know that this was an earthquake fault, then there would be nothing impressive about it. It's just a very long gorge that is kind of deep in some places. I'm not sure if rappelling into the fault is allowed, but I thought it would be interesting to get a closer up view of some of the rocks and pools on the bottom. Honestly not really worth driving out of your way to see this unless you happen to be a geology fanatic, or are just dead set on seeing every possible sight near Mammoth.

There is a reasonable size parking lot. 15-20 or so cars. There are bathrooms located at the parking lot. The hike from the parking lot to the actual craters is less than a mile and it's mainly flat, very little incline. The craters are awesome. One was easily seen than the other. The second one was surrounded with trees and plants. So it was hard to see. Worth a visit if your in mammoth!

Really neat place to hike to, if/when you can find it. No signs for the trail head besides a tiny…read morehand written sign you can only see from a few feet away. The protective fence around parts of the craters is torn down and some of the cement columns for the last metal fence along the cliff are fully exposed and literally floating/hanging in the air, posing a danger to anyone leaning on that fence. There's a fair amount of mosquitos, though not as bad as the Minaret Falls hike where you get swarmed and eaten alive. Great views of the craters on this hike though.

The most unprofessional and greedy ski shop I've came across in my 7 years of snowboarding. I…read morebrought a friend to rent here and she got the demo snowboard package. It came with very old looking bindings and they claimed that it was all they had. Day 2 on the slopes, front binding became loose and back binding ankle strap couldn't click in. My friend was stuck on the mountain without safe equipment to get down, so she had to call ski patrol to get her down with downhill lifts. A fun blue bird day was cut short for her. When returning the gear and asking for a refund for the second day, the shop had the audacity to deny responsibility and claim that the gear was working when it was rented out and that my friend should've brought the gear back while being stuck on the mountain. They ended up offering a 5 dollar discount, when the old equipment they rented out wasn't even worth the 2 days demo price was that was charged. This shop does not belong in the ski industry. It showed zero concerns about the safety of their patrons and zero responsibility for the garbage equipment that they rented out.

My cousin even had a close call when he accidentally slid off the trail, ran down 100 feet, and narrowly missed hitting trees. (Slipper snow) Despite the challenges, the reward at the top was well worth it. It was a beautiful, secluded lake. Some of us tried a little fishing, while the girls jumped into the freezing cold water for a swim. The water was so "pristine" that my hair felt conditioned afterward. It was magnificent, the water felt untouched and almost holy! This past summer, we hiked it again for the 4th of July, and it was so much easier because I had lost 20 pounds, haha! I'd say the hike is about 13 minutes up, around 2 miles round trip, and great for all ages. Just make sure you're in decent shape and don't have any serious health concerns. When I was 20 pounds heavier, the hike felt like a 10/10 in difficulty. Now, it's more like a 3/10, a total breeze!

When you turn left off of Lake Mary rd into the campsite, just keep to the right and go further and further back into the campsites, where you will eventually run into a really large parking area. The mine parking lot is marked by a short, small brown post and you will see more in that area for other hikes like Duck Pass. As far as the mine goes: really fun place to go look and explore!! Perfect for a day hike, but be prepared for bugs! Lots of sunscreen, water, and bug spray. Always make sure the little people to go the bathroom before this, and any, hike because it is back there as far as distance goes. I honestly believe it was less than .25 miles from parking lot to destination and there are many things to look at. Make sure to hike up the side of the hill, there's a shut mine there where you can take pictures of the mine and the beautiful scenery. We have a 4 year old and she had a blast here with us! Bring a camera, and take out what you pack in! Please don't liter and don't feed our bears

Keep following the parking lot until you see a sign saying Mine parking. Keep going past that and you'll see a sign for the Consolidated Gold Mine. Overall this could be a fun short hike for kids as they see various old buildings. There's also various paths including one that took us to a cave entrance which is closed off for safety. (My son loved that the fence was "bat-friendly" though we didn't see any.) Explore the area a bit, as there's often more to see with an additional short walk though not everything has signs suggesting you'll see more.
