My friends and I were all craving sushi so we went to this place and it did not disappoint! For just under $30 we got the Sashimi Dinner Combo and it was honestly worth what we paid for. You get miso soup, and sunomono salad, which were both extremely refreshing to start off with. Then we got 4 pieces of tempura(shrimp and veggies), after that we had our sashimi. Came here for dinner on Saturday night with the family. It was busy but there were still a few tables available. They greeted us right away and we were seated promptly at a booth. We ordered the viking boat for 3 and some green tea. The boat was huge. The boat came with miso and sunomo. Both excellent. Then next course was gyoza, assorted tempura, and tuna karage. All were tasty. I never had tuna karage. I really liked it! Next came the sushi, sashimi, and rolls. Sashimi was a good size. Rolls and sushi were tiny. After this, we were too stuffed for the last course of beef and chicken terryiaki so had to pack it to go. Decor was modern and staff were friendly. Washrooms were clean. We came in about an hour before we closed and we still received great service and the food was really good! I am from the Lower Mainland and good sushi is hard to come by in Kelowna. Bluetail sushi is actually just as good as any sushi Vancouver. It's just as fresh and just as delicious. The salmon did not have a strong fishy aftertaste which I found most Kelowna sushi joints have (it's telling of the quality of the fish they have). I really loved the tuna oshi and their negitoro rolls are pretty delectable! I'm pretty happy with my dining experience and I will definitely come back. The prices are pretty decent and the ambience is almost business casual? Like you can come all dressed up and you won't feel overdressed. Been coming here once in awhile for 3+ years and it's always good. Service is always great. Love the jazz music, decor and ambience. Definitely a nice change from the typical hole in the wall Japanese restaurants. Over the years we've tried so many things on the menu. To name some of the things we've tried off the top of my head: gomae, sunomono, Brussels sprouts, crab rice, Motoyaki, tempura, beef carpaccio, tuna 3 ways, sliders, so many different types of basic and specialty rolls, blue tail wrap, yakisoba, teriyaki, black cod and affogato. Portions are a little small but prices are reasonable (the old seesaw, though they could add a dollar and pass it on to me in larger servings). I think the reason I didn't give it a higher rating is because it could have been hotter in temperature, and could have packed some more flavour. I'm really picky here because there's so many great sushi places out there. If I'm in the chefs shoes, I'm doing everything I can to have my edge. In saying that, I'll be back again to try more! Bluetail is my go to for my lunch or dinner deliveries. I love the Brussel sprouts dishes and all the creative sushi. Perogies to vegetarian, my personal favs are the ones that have mango. I accidentally got one of my rolls fried and now I do it all the time. Such delicious food. read more

Unbelievably rude treatment by the hostess. We asked for one of two empty booths (easier seating for our young kid) and waited while they went to clean it. After a few minutes we noticed that no one had cleaned either booth. Then the hostess came back and said she wouldn't get around to cleaning it for "maybe ten or fifteen minutes." I eat a lot of sushi, as I live in Vancouver. My rule of thumb is if you're further than 3 hours fron the ocean, I don't eat sushi there. I make an exception for this place. Most of their food is high quality, and well made. My only complaint though is their portion size. 6 pieces of tuna sashimi for $12 is *alright* but the pieces are half what they should be. I also had the seafood popcorn which was tasty enough, but for $8 I feel they could have tossed more seafood into it, especially considering the pieces were so small. All in all the food is tasty? The rolls were of a medium size and nothing to write home about. Sashimi was very fresh but small. I expected much more from the coast . Overall it was just ok. Would I go back? Don't let the hip interior deter you from giving this place a try. Its not "hipster" from the Portland sense of the word and this is good. Nice staff! I was so impressed that the wait staff really want you to enjoy your experience and when an item on the menu did not list shrimp as part of its ingredients which I am allergic to, they made me a whole new roll without the shrimp and did not hesitate to admit the error. Fresh fish and imaginative roll creations - a diverse menu too so nobody should be out of luck finding something delicious! Try the Brussels sprouts appy yuuuum. The seared tuna was great and beautifully presented. The popcorn scallop and crab was incredible - just make sure if you have an allergy to double check ingredients. I count this as a new fave! Blue tail used to be one of the best sushi places in town. Not sure what happened, but quality has dropped. Rolls are 90% rice and seem thrown together . Sashimi pieces have shrunk by about 50%. This quality sushi is expected from cheaper places. read more

An excellent addition to the Kelowna dining scene! This is a great find in a strip mall just off the highway beside a Sausage maker and a car dealership - seriously! The inside is decorated in a modern, trendy yet simple way with "mood" lighting and an upscale feel yet still casual. This is a family owned and operated business, well worth supporting. We enjoyed the perfectly fresh sashimi and the red dragon roll very much! The gyoza and edamame are as good as anywhere else and they also had a nice selection of sake. Came in around 9:30pm on Friday night for a late dinner for 2. The restaurant itself is beautiful - very different from other sushi restaurants in Kelowna. They have everything spot on to the very last detail. They have cloth napkins and real deal chopsticks and even funky soy sauce bottles, unlike other restaurants who carry generic soy sauce bottles from the grocery store and cheap-o wooden chopsticks. It feels very high end, but my boyfriend and I felt extremely comfortable walking off the street in shorts and a t-shirt. The servers are great and the kitchen is fast. We warned the servers that it was our first time and they were very helpful and understanding when we ordered our meal. I cannot remember their names for the life of me, but it was a young gal and guy and they were very sweet and knowledgeable about the food and the restaurant. To begin, we ordered drinks. I grabbed a green tea (which is free!) and my boyfriend grabbed a root-beer. I myself grabbed a miso soup to begin. The soup was just above room temp. Personally, I prefer my soup quite hot but it was such a minor thing that I didn't mind at all. They have a spicy miso and a "mild" or regular miso. I grabbed the mild miso just to test it out and it was great! Onto the main course! My boyfriend grabbed a "Mild" Deep Fried California Roll (they have a spicy version as well), a Spicy Tuna Roll and a speciality roll called the Red Dragon Roll. I ordered a Spicy Salmon Roll and a speciality roll called the Red Mt. Roll. It was extremely hard to decide what to order as there are so many rolls that look and sound incredible! The rolls were awesome. So fresh and tasty! They were very creative as well. It honestly looked like a piece of art! The end of the meal came and I really wanted to try out their Green Tea Ice-cream but unfortunately they were out. Which means it must be pretty good! We grabbed our bill after some nice conversation between us and the servers and were extremely surprised about the final total. Only $45 for 2 speciality rolls, 3 basic rolls, a miso soup and a pop. At other closer restaurants that we have tried for the exact same amount of rolls, came to much higher than that in cost. We tipped generously and thanked the servers and kitchen for everything and promised we would be back! Definitely a place worth checking out if you're in the area or even if you're not! Then I had to ask twice for extra ginger (the second time, the waitress seemed surprised, like she had completely forgotten the first time I had asked). Worse: really thinly cut fish. We ordered salmon and hamachi nigiri and had to look twice when the food arrived. Really? In terms of thickness, not even half the thickness of the nigiri we get at our usual sushi places at home in Coquitlam (Sushi Mori, Oyama, for example). We spent $40 and still left hungry. read more

We were here tonight for dinner - my wife and I have been many times, but this was our friends' first visit. We were all impressed by the atmosphere (albeit a little on the small side) when we first walked in, it was cool, trendy and had a downtown Vancouver vibe. The menu had plenty of choices for both sushi lovers and for those who just want to try something Japanese style and different. Not everything had fish in it and not everything was sushi related. Their rolls were interesting and well presented. My wife and I shared the Brussel Sprouts to start (amazing) and the Godfather Roll and the Protein Roll (a near carb free creation that is loaded with 30 grams of protein- If you're training for a event as I am, you can still eat here guilt free, that's the best part). The last time we went, it seemed like there had been a major staff changeover. I tried a new salad, it was tuna and greens, and it was HORRIBLE. I had one bite but it was inedible. Imagine dry, limp greens with unflavoured raw fish on top in piles. No, no, no, no!! This place is not good. I tried this place out based on some decent reviews I read on here and the modern interior look according to the photos on Yelp. Yes the modern interior looked promising for a good sushi meal. I ordered a sunomono salad and some spicy tuna roll type (I forget the name) with a red spicy sauce (according to menu). I received my sunomono salad first, of course and this should have been a sign for me to leave when I saw fruit in it. Weird and did not offer any complimentary flavours to the salad so why put it in? Just looks weird. And the taste of the salad was so disappointing - it was watery vinegar - no taste! How does a sushi place screw up sunomono salad?!? Then came the sushi roll...get this...the spicy sauce was SALSA!!! Firstly, salsa on raw fish is gross. Secondly, salsa on raw fish is gross. It wasn't even spicy. And I bet it was store bought too. I was actually mad at the end of my meal. The server was nice so I didn't make a fuss, but I would NEVER come back here. Does not even deserve a second chance. For those who think this place is good (or even dare say best sushi in town) that says a lot about sushi in Kelowna). Don't think good sushi exists in the town or is even possible considering its proximity to the ocean for fresh fish. Don't bother going here unless they change the menu entirely and source out a new sushi chef. read more

Wow! This is the 2nd timeI have eaten at this lovely so well appointed restaurant and this time I brought my wife who loves chicken teriyaki. We both shared an appetizer of gyoza, delish and served with the most delicate and tasty sauce. Then on to the Crispy Chicken Teriyaki which we both agreed was the best we have ever had. Ok..it was really a dinner dish but we could not resist trying it. The restaurant was almost completely filled during the lunch period. While enjoying our oh so comfy club chair seating we watched as people came in and left with bags of steaming hot lunch time treats. We left contentedly full, clutching our take out menus. read more
