We based our selection on its proximity to the Airbnb we were staying at in the Exchange District as it was just a short walk. Our hosts also recommended it and they were not wrong. The food was outstanding and the service was great. Natalia was attentive but not overbearing. The menu is extensive and has pictures which is helpful in figuring out what some items might be. We had the gyoza, Japanese rice paper rolls, Ben rolls (a customer favourite for obvious reasons), spicy beef roll and tempura yam. We also had tempura bananas with ice cream for dessert based on our servers recommendation. It was a perfect dessert - light and sweet. We will definitely be back or will order takeout. read more

Located in the historical Exchange District of the city, this cozy gem found it's way into my heart. I never really considered myself to be a sushi connoisseur, but I do know what I like, and when it comes to Blufish.... I LOVE! Upon opening the main doors of the building, you are given an option to climb stairs to a hair salon or turn right and reach the landing welcomed by a BluFish "This Month's Special" board. Another door opens to reveal the restaurant's character by the feature brick wall which leads to a wall of windows that looks onto the Bannatyne Ave. The decor, dimmed lighting with tea-lights placed on your table, creates a nice, warm, comfortable dining atmosphere. There is a small bar with seating and tables that sit two to four people but can be moved to accommodate a larger party. :) At the back you will find fresh seafood sprawled out behind a glass window with the Itamae (aka Sushi Chef) busy at work making the next masterpiece. NOW...Trying not to salivate all over the menu, we came to a decision to share a few appetizers as we sipped our green tea (Steeped in individual teapots, I might add): - Tuna Gomae (Large cubed maguro and avocado tossed in an aromatic goma-ae dressing sprinkled with black sesame seeds) The best I have ever had! - Agedashi Tofu (Golden fried tofu topped with finely sliced green onion served with a sweet tempura sauce) Oishii!! - Pink Tuna and Salmon Sashimi (My choice, as I have a dedicated relationship with Sashimi). Thick and succulent slices of fish with a side of stringed diakon adorned on a decorative plate) Once we had finished with our first food-gasm we decided on our main rolls. Being here many times before, I can account that every roll I have tried has always made me leaving a happy woman caring for her new food baby. But there is always my favorites that I order: - Green roll (Crispy warm shrimp tempura, kanpyo, avocado, cucumber, tamago, and plum mayo wrapped in a soy crepe) The soy crepe is thin and melts in your mouth allowing for all the other flavors to unite deliciously on your tongue, with the lingering sweetness from the plum mayo drizzle. - Rainbow Roll (Colorful California roll topped with tuna, salmon, squid, shrimp, surf clam, and avocado) When it comes to me and sushi, the more raw fish the better! This fits the bill. Both having undone our belts and busting at the seams, we declined desert THIS TIME. But when there is a slight vacancy, I like to end my wonderous experience here with the Chocolate Molten Lava Cake with a scoop of Green Tea or Red Bean ice cream! Now, the price is a little on the expensive side than other places in the city, but the with the prompt, friendly service, quality of the fish, the presentation and size of the rolls, it's worth it! Really disappointing. We ordered $60 worth of sushi NYE, and it was delivered so warm the roe was sliding off and the fish looked shiny. We were concerned about food safety. An hour in the fridge and it was finally up to about the temp you'd expect when you unpack cheap grocery store sushi. The rice was bland and gummy. No hint of rice wine, mayo or wasabi inside the pieces. The $13 Rainbow Roll, which is meant to be an exquisite blend of seafood flavours, was rubbery and had nothing distinctive about the taste compared to the CA roll. Fish was sliced unevenly, in differing sizes on the nigiri. My friend called Blufish and very courteously asked how it could have arrived warm. She didn't bother getting into the questionable presentation. Could it have been sent out warm? They got defensive and started going on about how sushi doesn't go under heat lamps---why would it? Then they asked if it came with tempura (it didn't). Well, if an order is mixed temps, more reason to be attentive. Since it was being delivered to near UM, why not throw in some ice? She asked if it's possible Door Dash tossed it on the seat without insulation, and they claimed they always make sure sushi goes in an insulated bag. We've waited for a courtesy call from the manager for two days. Nothing. $80 with tip, and a disappointing NYE treat. read more

I have been to a number of sushi restaurants in the city. Blufish is by far one of my favourite ones of all! Blufish is known for their specialty rolls. It's also known to be the most expensive Japanese restaurant in the City for years. At my visit, we ordered 12 different rolls, two appetizers, a Bento box and two different types of desserts so we got to try a bit of everything. Blufish did an excellent job with the presentation. They used high quality ingredients for the sushi, which we were very pleased with. The sushi was very good. Some of my favourite rolls were the Bannatyne Roll, Dragon Roll and Lobster Roll. For the Teriyaki Beef dinner, the flavour of the beef was alright so I probably wouldn't get that again. For dessert, we had the chocolate lava cake and tempura banana with mango and green tea ice cream. I really enjoyed the banana tempura dessert. The batter was light and crispy and it wasn't greasy at all even though it was deep fried. Overall, we had a positive experience at Blufish and we would highly recommend it for special occasions! If you go there for your birthday, you'll get a free chocolate lava cake! read more

On our first trip to Winnipeg was just a week ago. My husband and I love eating different foods and have developed a pretty good palette. So when we where figuring out what we wanted to eat we found blu fish. Sushi sounded soo good. So we read the reviews on here and most of them sounded ridiculous. So we ended up going to blu fish. There was no fish stink. But there was very friendly staff that where more than happy to make us comfortable. So we ordered the blu fish scallops for an app. These where freaking delicious! Then we ordered three rolls of sushi, the dragon, caterpillar, and one of their specials. All where very tasty with fresh seafood and vegetables. Then we got the gyoza, these are just pork dumplings but WOW they where tasty. And don't forget about the sake. I don't remember the names of them but they had a pink bottle with flowers... If you get that bottle shake it before you pour. And the price is very reasonable. Since ya know it's super tasty. read more

I had never tried Blufish but have always heard good things about it. I had the house to myself last night and decided to order it through Mobile Maître'd. I knew I was taking a chance at ruining the experience by having it delivered and not trying it for the first time AT the restaurant, but I really wanted sushi. I started with an Agedashi Tofu. When I saw it, I was a little disappointed to see it was just a basic fried square. I expected the taste to also be basic. However, the taste and texture were unexpectedly wonderful. Even after sitting in a take out box, they were incredibly crispy. Would absolutely order again. I played it very safe with the rolls (as I had heard they were a bit bland) and went with a standard dynamite roll. As I was warned, it WAS bland. However, I attribute that to the seaweed. The ingredients in the roll itself were fresh and tasty. Finally, I ordered a Blufish Scallops. Tempura breaded scallops topped with a Japanese aioli. Now these were fantastic. Scallops were cooked to perfection and the tempura and aioli mixed so beautifully. Absolutely delicious. I always go with the classic orders when trying a new sushi...but I can honestly say that I can't wait branch out to the sashimi and every one of the signature rolls and dishes. Will definitely be going to the restaurant for the full experience very soon. read more

I'm a big fan of all things Sushi and this place absolutely ranks first in Winnipeg in my view. The sushi is spectacular with an emphasis on everything being as fresh as fresh gets. Sometimes you can look over to the Sushi chef and watch the master giving very gentle instruction to his staff on the correct technique to use for each individual type of fish. Very affordable lunch option if you go for a bento box. You get 3ish huge pieces of delicious tempura'ed chicken, cucumber sunomono, salmon sashimi, dynamite roll, 2 curry bites and a small miso soup (this is the dynamite bento). I made a reservation at 530 pm for our wedding anniversary. I did it thru email and they are prompt enough to reply and told us some available parking space which normally hard to find in the busy exchange district. The place is a bit crowded and a bit small but looks like the customers really need to do reservation and good they gave at least 2 hours for dining. The waitress was so helpful and guided us through their all time favourite which includes their blufish scallops, lobster roll, dragon roll and veggie roll. I also love their grilled squid which is part of their starters. I love their Sapporo beer. What struck me most is the freshness of the sashimi although there is not much of pickled ginger serve. The prices are reasonable for the quality of food. My only issue is they have only 1 washroom for each gender. Overall review is excellent.... read more

Interesting that most people on this review found their sushi rice to be dry, yet I had the opposite experience and had really mushy sushi rice. Either way, sushi rice should not be dry or wet as it plays a huge component in rolls and nigiri. I had the "blufish bento" ($14.50) and it comes with miso soup, California roll, edamame, sunomono salad, chicken tempura, and spicy salmon sashimi. I opted to substitute the california roll with a bakudon roll for an extra $1 as I hate California rolls. This is a massive bento meal that is a bit different from the traditional boxes. The miso soup like at many places are quite forgettable, too salty and does not have enough tofu or seaweed. The roll was full of mushy sushi rice but tuna, tempura and spicy sauce was fine. The sunomono salad was too vinegary and did not have the lightness and balance in this dish. I was a bit disappointed with the spicy salmon sashimi as the spicy sauce was way too overpowering so I didn't taste any salmon. I would opt to have just plain salmon sashimi if I were to order this again. But really the best part of this entire bento box was the chicken tempura - which were really chicken fingers breaded in panko! I received two really generous pieces of the most tender and juicy chicken tempura ever and the batter was very light and not greasy at all. There wasn't a lot of seasoning as it was meant to be dipped in the soy sauce. But my fondest memory is of that chicken tempura - something I'd order on it's own to eat. The meal was not very good and considering how many sushi places there are in the city, I would not come running back. Service was very frenzied as the two servers were running around like crazy trying to get the lunch crowd in and out. But the service was still nice and efficient. read more

The food here was absolutely delicious! We had: Agedashi Tofu, Vegetable Tempura, Vegetable Caterpillar Roll, Chili Salmon Roll, and Cucumber+Shitake Roll. The sushi rice was moist and delicious, everything was fresh and expertly rolled, and our waitress was awesome. The only complaint -- and it's a minor one -- was that the agedashi tofu portion was a little bit small. I'll definitely be coming back here again next time I'm in Winnipeg. read more

The rice used in most of the sushis wasn't fresh, it was dry, which made most sushi taste a bit off. The other sushis were good thou. Service that night wasn't quite impressive. The person was hard to understand because they couldn't articulate enough. Might have been a new staff member... The service was awsome. The food was soooo tasty. The portion size was generous. Great selection. The tables are spaced nicely so you have some privacy. 3 of us went to Blufish for a belated Birthday dinner. It was a Tuesday night shortly after 5 so it was not even close to busy. There was one other table of 4 besides us at this time. I have been working in the restaurant industry for over 30 years and can honestly say that this was the worst service ever! Our server was busy chatting with her friend so kept forgetting our beverage orders. I had to ask if our order could be taken because it was like we were invisible. At this time 3 other tables of 2 had walked in and another server was on the floor. Totally ignored us as well. It took an hour and a half after we arrived(had an appetizer at this point) to place our main course orders. When we were ready for the bill our server was no where to be found. I spotted her chatting on her cell phone in the lobby. We actually thought the evening was a joke and there was a hidden camera on us for one of those bad candid camera type shows. That is how absurd the service was. We were all rather pissed off! Unfortunate for sure because the food was excellent. Will not be back! read more
