I had banked with USECU since college. Now that it's BluPeak, there is only one branch I can go to on weekends, and it's far. The dumb interactive teller makes no sense, they do 3rd party credit card card service, and now they just honored a check I wrote 3 years ago that was erroneously dated 2001, so it's a 23 year old check with my previous name and old address. They said not honoring "stale" checks is more a guideline than a rule and that they don't verify the checks uploaded through mobile banking. That was the nail on the coffin 4 me. BEWARE: CU held mobile deposit for 11 days! because i hadnt deposited a personal check in a while. They held my money hostage, wouldnt allow me to cancel the deposit and wanted ME to provide proof of availabilty of funds. Still waiting to get my 1k. We recently had to take over the finances of an elderly relative who had been banking at the Mission Valley Branch of BluPeak Credit Union. Employee Michelle Vega helped us throughout the process over a number of months. We have never come across a better person to help with our banking needs in the past 50 years! She was attentive, knowledgeable and prompt in getting answers for us. She pays attention to details, always a plus when it comes to finances. Originally, we were excited to visit this new branch location (it had moved from it's previous location on Rio San Diego Drive). Unfortunately, we discovered that it was basically a brick & mortar location which felt like it's human tellers had been replaced by fancy self-service kiosks (similar to the fast food ordering stations at McDonalds, Panera Bread, or The Habit). These self-service kiosks are indoor ATM machines which could perform few more banking functions. While this branch did have 1-2 staff members behind an informational counter to assist members using it's self-service kiosks, answer credit union related questions, and smile happily as you go about your merry way; it felt like banking was now "less personal" than ever. Like robots are beginning to win the employment war where former tellers are now being replaced by machines. This was our specific issue with the new way USECU will be conducting business at this location. We went to this branch to obtain two new or like-new, crispy $50 bills to be used as birthday gifts. Since this branch doesn't have in-person tellers per se who have their own cash drawers (they have machines which spit out money after they perform your transaction(s) on their computer). Cash is pre-loaded onto into their machines, just like the automated teller kiosks in the lobby area. So this what I had to do to obtain the two fifties, it was suggested that I withdraw $400 (eight $50 bills) in hopes I would get two newer crisp $50 bills which weren't beaten up or worn out, then deposit back the $300 in fifties which I didn't want. I did that, but was still unhappy as the two fifties I kept were still not as new as I'd had wished for, but didn't want to withdraw another $800 just to re-deposit it. This is just one example, but can you see how having a live teller to assist would be desired? Not only that, but was told that while this new style of banking is a "pilot" location, that this was the new direction which USECU is hoping to go, eventually converting the rest of their branches to a similar operation if found to be profitable, efficient, and eventually desired by the members. I for one, do NOT like it at all! I know our branch in Chula Vista is currently relocating due to it's lease expiring, and hope it does not do the same thing. I would be happy with a "hybrid" branch featuring half self-service kiosks & half human tellers to accommodate both members who want no contact, and those who like to speak to an actual person and not just interact with a glorified ATM kiosk. That's just my two cents... I hope USECU sees this review, and takes my concerns into consideration that not everyone is on board with their changes for the future, which they think all their members want because they're sadly mistaken. read more

Terrible service! Requested to close my checking and savings account, was asked if I want it to open an account?? Then was told you do understand we can't close the credit card. Can't believe people still bank here. It's clearly not there for the people. Closed down locationS, only one branch open on weekends, no in person tellers. Credit card is now serviced by outside party. What has happened to this credit union? Everything is inconvenient. Your money is better off at any other credit Union. BluPeak has the best rates for savings and CD's...period. Discount airlines have low fares. There are trade-offs! We opened savings and CD's and are very pleased with BluPeak. It is important to pay attention to on-line details, as services may be limited in order to provide their exceptional rates. As a retired airline executive, I have read many reviews by infrequent travelers who couldn't find a departure gate/complained that the plane left without them, etc. Read YELP complaints carefully...many are multiple "sour grapes" from folks who can not accept responsibility for their own actions. If you really need computer help, ask your children or grandchildren. You will be pleased when you see your dividends multiply! read more

Mr. Loza, the manager at the Mission Valley branch has a horrible attitude. My account got hacked, so they closed my account and opened another account. Good. But, they wanted me to pay for a scan of my computer.Huh? Paid 75 bucks for the scan. They told me "just show the receipt to the branch manager, all should be good." Nope. The manager didn't want to call loss prevention or the corporate office. Nope. Just wait for something to happen, someday. That account is the account that feeds my Trading porfolio account. So until loss prevention someday somehow unlocked my account per Mr. loza, my portfolio account would have to wait. That shenanigan cost me 3k in losses. I closed my account with BluPeak, and opened an account with Mission Federal. They actually want my business. Stay away from BluPeak. They suck! read more

[Just got off the phone with the "manager" of the Mission V branch for USE. [Tues., 5/3, 3:50 PM] So far I am unimpressed with his response to my request to share the email address for the USE Credit union's CEO-- it's not the first step in the complaint process, per his info. Yes, but I'm not a USE employee-- I'm a 18 yr Member/Client! I sent this incident to the CEO via Linked In-- I'm a member there too! And 3 days later, not a peep (added Fri, 5/7, 3:50 PM)] Wanna preface my experience with two short bits of info: First, I'm a retired Special Ed/ Kinder through Gr 5 Teacher [37+ years service], so keeping my cool and being patient are very typical for me. After today's experience, I'm feeling unserved and ill- served by my credit union, USE-- Mission Valley and moreso by having no available South Bay-Chula Vista Branch. Because of an incident yesterday re: pursuing a new Debit card, after losing my debit card, yesterday.  Knowing members do not have a South Bay branch, I'd decided to go to the Mission Valley branch. (had second stop to make in the direction of Kearny Mesa.) I planned stopping quickly at the Mission Valley branch to pick up a new Debit card. Sadly, though my GPS App took me directly to the "address" for USE, there is no building with a sign, nor was a suite no. for USE shown per the Camino del Rio North address.  I made a few turns between the old Eastern parking lot access for Macy's then proceeded all the way back to the Target store. And nothing! So I pulled over and looked up the address again, finally deciding to call support at the credit union, for the second time via customer service The young man went on to say I needed get up and go into the mall. Having less time before my appointment [appt was at 2pm], it's nearly 1:35 pm, before I'm parked and walk up. I walk to the west [towards the theaters], and can look beyond to Target, and no USE sign. This horrid mall has no directory and no one around save few Mom's for the 2nd thing.  I turn back around and walk towards the old Macy's building, heading East. And again. I see no USE branch. I look up toward the North avenue/ aisle. And there are no signs revealing a USE branch in that direction either.  Time ran out and I had no added time to be wandering around "hoping" to "bump" into the CU. With few open stores, fewer customer's around that to wanted to inquire of & knowing I definitely wasn't going to find a Directory on the site, I had no other option but to abandon the needle in a haystack outing. The young man that I spoke to at USE originally told me the branch, "should be right there when you get to away from parking area, and into the Mall. [unsure why the Reps don't have specific reference store names to direct a caller, a suite number or aren't able to connect to a Branch.] His word are not true.  Spoke to a 2nd young man after and complained vociferously to him because I was livid with USE! [I was clear beforehand saying: "I know it's not his fault."] I ask the 2nd young man for the email address of the CEO, which I was not sent. Further when he tries to connect me with someone at the Branch, his call goes unanswered. In other words, my trip out and all supposed avenues for support are all a waste of time of my good time.  I feel ill-served. And though I ask the young man for the CEO email info 3x, apparently he isn't permitted to share it.  So I call the Branch near 5 pm because I'm disappointed and I feel disrespected. I believe all South Bay Credit Union member's are not being well-served with a site that is not easily accessed from a parking lot where I/ any other member can actually look out of our car window and see the USE building/ windows for "my" credit union.  Horrible. Don't ask me to talk about the South Bay branch because if I would have had myself a branch I would have had my issue directly and immediately dealt with. Now I'll have to wait 7 to 10 days for replacement a card by mail.  Is it my fault that USE CU made themselves so difficult to find? Worse, that I have no branch accessible to me in my community or an adjoining community.  Ludicrous non support and non service USE Credit Union! Fine, I will sign on with a Credit union that still remembers how to offer a Member real service! I have been with USECU since I moved to San Diego 27 years ago. The current institution is nothing like the old one. Last month I needed to see the digital image of a check that I had written. It was easy to do on the old system, but if the new system provides that capability I was unable to find it, and had to call and talk to an employee to verify the check. Today I wanted to add my BluePeak debit card to ApplePay. When Apple went to verify the account it gave me the option of having BluePeak text it, email it, or to call them. When text and email brought no results I called the number. I spoke to a man for five minutes who asked all kinds of identity questions ("mother's maiden name") to verify who I was. After all of this he said that he could not help me, and I would need to call member services, and that he could not transfer my call. I asked him why we went through all of the ID verification if he was powerless to assist me but never got an answer. Membership services had a five minute predicted wait time, and I have up. All of this combined with the tiny little spaces that serve as "offices" plus the ATM "tellers" have brought me to the end of my business relationship with USECU/BluePeak. Tonight I unfroze my three credit accounts and will set up a checking account elsewhere. Something bad has happened to USECU. read more

Update: I was contacted by the loans supervisor, Linda, and we had a very productive conversation regarding my situation. They re-assessed my request and came back with a reasonable counter-offer and offered helpful suggestions regarding the tech loan transfer predicament. These guys are sharks when trying to get your business but you give you the shaft when you're onboard. Failed to mention that loans accrue interest during inter-bank transfer processing periods they impose, then refuse to reverse the charges. I also applied for a signature loan and was interrogated about the purpose (which is a private matter) then denied despite a 800 pt credit score, a tech loan in good standing and being a UCSD employee (with whom they partner). Don't fall for their BS. read more

Recently opened a savings account and transferred money into it from another bank which I also used to pay the $5 membership fee. Well, the thousands I put in went through, but the $5 membership fee was inexplicably returned to my bank the same day. Nobody called and I only realized when I tried to transfer more money into Blupeak and couldn't. They place my funds on hold, meaning I cannot use them, indefinitely without a solution despite multiple phone calls and even going into a branch here in San Diego. All because of $5! I asked to close the account and just send the money back to its original source, but they can't nor can they tell me when they will be able to despite the money sitting there for 11 days now. I've had several banks over the years and this is by far the worst. If you want a bank that will arbitrarily freeze your assets without recourse until they say otherwise, than this is the bank for you. read more

This used to be my favorite credit union until they moved. I had car loans and a mortgage through them. The location is ok but their new teller machines are terrible. I hate using them. You can also hear everyone's transactions while you are doing yours. I really try not to go in there anymore. I am seriously thinking of closing my accounts and moving on to another bank. Call and spoke to a manager and they are basically saying that they are waiting for a response. BS!!!. I will be calling everyday until this is resolved. still no sense of urgency to get me my money back...... When i spoke to a manager on friday she stated to me that she didn't know how the process worked and got flustered when i wanted to know why she didn't know. These are the people that you have in management and when a problem arises no one knows nothing. i work in accounting now and i will never tell a customer i didn't know how to do my job. I moved my accounts to North Island Federal C.U. & primarily to Navy FCU, which are both way better. I had been a member for years at BPCU (formerly USECU). Even though I live close to NI & Navy, I would drive out to UCSD branch kind of out of loyalty. I need a credit union check once every 2 months. NI & Navy give FREE cashiers checks 1 per day EVERY DAY. But USE wouldn't even give me one free check every 2 months, not even the branch mgr could swing that! And the CD rates are NI & Navy are WAY better - I have a 3, 4 & 5% at Navy. When I wanted to take $ out a couple years ago for a NIFCU CD, the mgr at USE literally scolded me like a 5 year old child. I only kept my membership because they have safe deposit boxes and to work with their financial adviser. I recently got a letter from BPCU that he has left, and they set me up with a temporary FA. I called BPCU to ask some ?s, the phone rep was clueless. When I asked nicely to leave my questions on a message system with a supervisor or mgr, he said that wasn't possible, but that he would give them a message and they would call me back, they haven't. The service at Navy is just STELLAR!! and the products are WAY better, and they are not so cheap with their customers, they give FREE cashiers checks EVERY DAY!!! I would say the tellers at BPCU are good in their customer service however even if their products and policies are poor in comparison to my other credit unions. read more

My son had a car loan thru USE. He accidently let his car insurance lapse and they charged him $900. He paid it but they apparently applied it to the wrong thing or the person he was dealing with pocketed the money, because they kept harrassing him afterward saying he was 2 months behind on payments even though he NEVER missed a payment. They repossessed his car and told him it would cost him $3,000 to get his car back. If I could give them no stars I would. You're the one who is going to lose your ass in this deal USE. It will cost you more to get it out of hawk and ship it back to San Diego than the car is worth. My advise...DO NOT GET A CAR LOAN WITH USE. read more

I really don't know what everyone is complaining about either. Take your pettiness somewhere else. I have been with USE for 7 years and have had no problems whatsoever. Even after working at another credit union for a time I still think USE is a great place to bank. They don't charge a ton of fees for anything and if they do it is because of the service you signed up for. I have had my card blocked a handful of times to prevent fraud. At NO TIME was if the fault of USE that my info could have been leaked, but rather at some vendor that I visited e.g. Target. When it did get blocked they were quick to give me a call and let me know about it. I went to the branch and got a new card issued in seconds. Helloooo the only reason they block it in the first place is to protect YOU and your finances! There has never really been a line when I have come to this location. However I don't come often because there are very few reasons to physically visit the bank anyway. Withdrawing money? Go to the ATM! Depositing money? Go to the ATM! Making a transfer? Online or mobile banking! Depositing a check? Mobile deposit! Get with it people! read more

Every year, USE seems to celebrate my membership by inviting any number of hackers to explore my debit card and to charge it up in luxurious digs. This year: fabulous North Carolina. I decided to keep my membership because I have specific bills that have been withdrawn from the account, and reaching the creditors is somewhat akin to Shackleton's southward journey. Again, as is our anniversary tradition, I filed a dispute and was promised resolution within 24-48 hours. The branch I bank with certainly must exist in a wormhole, because it has been over a week, and charges to Jebb's Still Supply and Fishin' Gear remain on my account. USE is quite happy to lose clients over $60, but, in their favor, never forget your anniversary. Can't wait until next year. Who knows what awaits? Being shot by a teller? Again, USE-less. I have had the best service, through all the big things in my life from Car loans, Home loans, Home improvement loans, kids accounts and all the things that they do so well. Nothing has changed,since my last review. There was a response, from Tammi M, from the USE office, asking for my telephone number, which they have had for 30+ years. Again, long wait outside, minimum number of employees, and lots of empty space and offices, inside. When I said something about Tammi's minimum response, to my complaint, the woman behind the counter, said she would let the manager know, wh n he was sitting right there 8 feet away. I don't believe this is all about covid. The customer service, was going down hill, for the past several years. Covid just allowed them, to give worse service.... It is all very sad, as USE was one of the best credit unions, in San Diego County. read more

USE went above and beyond with my mortgage refinance. They were efficient and straightforward through the entire process. Donald Coleman spearheaded the project (the loan had some twists and turns to be navigated), his service and professionalism were truly outstanding. When I visit their branches they are uniformly welcoming. A nice treat after the disregard from my former big bank. I recommend them without hesitation. read more

I am giving this CU ) stars for 2 reasons and the first is the way they treat the customers and 2 is because of the fraud insurance they are trying to make me pay. I got a car loan through them in 2016 and even though the monthly payment was a little high, everything has been going alright. Until this year when I let the insurance on my car lapse because my husband was overseas so I was using his car for those 3 months. I got a letter from USE stating that they had to cover my car for those 3 months and the cost would be $1600! It included a charge for a hypothetical car accident, as well, because that's what I would have been charged if an accident had occurred. I don't even pay that for my whole year of insurance with Geico. Of course I call to see what's going on and what can be done and I was told that I would get a call back in about 10 minutes because she had to check some numbers with her boss. 4 hours later and I have not received a call back. So I make the call after talking to Karen for about 15 minutes, being told there was nothing that I could do about it and that she's the only person that I can speak to about this matter. Then I was hung up on by Karen, who told me it must have been a problem on my end. She was not very helpful at all. I called back and she answered saying that I can pay the 1600 dollars back over 12 months and they added the amount to my existing loan balance. It pushed my car note payment up by about 170 dollars! I told her that it was ridiculous and I wanted to speak to some one else. She says I am going to transfer you to Sandy in our financial solutions department. This Sandy... After 2 minutes of hearing her rude voice, I was hung up on. Called back, got Karen, who transferred me back to Sandy. I was asked my name and immediately told that there was nothing she could do about the insurance or the increased payment. I told her it would be nice if she pretended to be interested in my issue in the least. She got very upset and told me that I was irresponsible for getting a car that I could not afford and if the car was such a burden, why didn't I just bring it back to them or file for bankruptcy. IS SHE SERIOUS?? So after some choice words from me about customer service and how their company needs to learn how to treat people, I told her that I had another bank that I was doing all my other business with and she interrupts me to say that if my other bank was good, why wasn't I on the phone with them to have them refinance the car? So again, I gave her a piece of my mind and then hung up. These behind the scenes people are a joke. They have one branch (all the tellers are very nice) and they charge a 10.00 fee to make any payments over the phone. The call center people are very inexperienced with all accounts. If you have options on which credit union you wish to choose, please stay away from these con artists. read more

USE credit union is great. When Target got hacked, they voluntarily replaced my card. Other peoples' banks didn't do that unless fraudulent activity was found. So I appreciate the extra level of security. I also appreciate Lety redoing my loan after I decided I should add unemployment protection on my car loan just to be safe.
