My son just had his nerf birthday party at West Coast Martial Arts Academy and it was a blast! I was looking for an indoor venue to host his birthday given the weather has been unpredictable. The space was open with high ceilings and you get to use the whole facility including the waiting area, main floor, and boxing ring. The party package included 90 mins of nerf battle time, 30 mins for cake, 2 helpers to set up, clean up, and entertain the kids, nerf guns, protective eye glasses, and bullets for 20 kids (additional cost if you have more than 20 kids), and tables and chairs. The cost was $549. They allow you to bring food, drinks, and decorations. It was easy to book the event and the front office assistant, Ren, was great at coordinating everything. My child has been attending the Warrior class and has always been happy and enthusiastic about the program. The environment used to feel positive and supportive, and watching him in class was always a joy. However, since the arrival of the new instructor, Mr. James, things have changed. My child has come home upset after class, expressing feelings of being singled out unfairly compared to other students. For example, during a recent class, he was made to do push-ups as a punishment for talking, while other kids doing the same thing were not disciplined in the same way. I am disappointed and concerned about the way this new instructor is interacting with the students. We are not karate students, but found WCMAA while searching online for birthday party venues. All my son wanted to do for his 7th birthday was to have an "epic" Nerf battle with his close friends and classmates. I submitted an inquiry on their website and the studio owner, Will, quickly responded. Booking process was easy and seamless and Will was quick to reply to subsequent emails. On the day of the party, we were greeted by two young, but experienced instructors. They were beyond helpful from unloading our car and assisting with setup, to confidently organizing all party games and activities. The instructors also gave our younger guests extra attention, demonstrating how to shoot the Nerf blasters and offering lots of supportive encouragement. Additionally, they ensured everyone was included in the fun and avoided injury by enforcing "safe play" rules and happily rearranged obstacles at the kids' requests. Their enthusiasm, solid crowd control, and positive attitude elevated the whole party experience, which allowed the adults to relax and comfortably socialize while the kids played. At the conclusion of the event, the instructors fully handled clean up and helped us get our belongings to our car. Guns, foam bullets and protective eyewear were provided for use by WCMAA, as well as an indoor "party room" space, two immaculate onsite restrooms and ample seating. Also included was the use of the entire karate studio. Having a truly private party made the event a lot more enjoyable and less chaotic than other parties we've attended in shared space setups. Best place for Kids Karate in RB and 4s Ranch area! We have been to others over the years and this place is hands down the best on multiple levels. Not only is it ran by great guys, they have great instructors all around. Plus they have several instructors at each class to help the student build their skills. It is obvious that they aren't doing this just for the tuition money. There is genuine concern and care for our kids development. Space! Unlike all the other places, kids aren't crammed into a small suite like a can of sardines. This place is huge, warehouse size huge with a nice seating for 'engaged' parents like me to watch the kids. They also do parties for much cheaper than jumpy places, the kids have a blast and the parents can chill and chat. Price is better than any other place and well worth the money. The tuition is nothing compared to the investment and return we are already seeing in my son's confidence. My 6 y/o has been here for only 3 months, but you can tell the change in behavior, wanting to practice, to be good at Karate, to make us and his instructors proud. We use karate as a reward system to help in other areas now and it works....'do homework and read, then you can practice karate.' He comes home reciting the disciplines that he learns from class, showing how to make good decisions instead of bad ones. I can't tell you there's one thing better than the other at this place. Throughout the many years my daughter has been attending WCMAA, I have watched her grow and develop more courage and self discipline. The entire instructor staff really takes the time to teach not just technique but life skills every child should have. My 4 year old son has been taking private lessons for about a year with Mr. Will. My son and his friend have been coming each weak and really enjoying their lessons. He takes pride in mastering the movements, positions, kicks and thrusts, and comes running to show me when he earns stripes on his belt. He has earned his yellow and more recently his orange belt. His martial arts class has really encouraged discipline and respect, and is something he looks forward to each week. Not ever going to do a Chuck E Cheese Bday ever again !!! We are so glad we found this place for our son's 5th bday. We have tried kid ventures, chuck e cheese, jump it up, etc.... We wanted to do something a bit different than the "let your kids run around for an hour, then cake time." My son is into Ninjago this year so he wanted a ninja themed bday party. After endless research, we found West Coast on Google. We were skeptical bc there weren't many reviews on karate bday day parties. I decided to give the place a call and ended up setting a time to meet Will to go over the details of our party. We met the same evening and after talking to will for 5 mins, we decided to book my son's party, and this was the best decision ever. This is a martial arts academy where they teach kids martial arts, duh ;) The facility was awesome. It's located in a business park in 4s Ranch/Rancho Bernardo. It has 2 rooms with AC where my wife was able to come a little bit early to setup the decorations and food. We booked the package where Will allows you to bring in your own food. Did I mention our party was in Sunday? We were so thankful that Will was able to accommodate us. The best part of having a karate party had to be the karate activities that prepared by the instructor. The instructor for the day was Robert, he was so nice and patient with our little 5 yr olds that they listened to 99% of what he was saying. Activities included an obstacle course (kids favorite), lining up in rows to learn basic karate moves, and a relay. This place is big enough to accommodate big parties. We had 20 kids and 20 adults and it didn't feel crowded at all. A special thanks again to all the West Coast Team for making my son's 5th bday party super spectacular. We got kudos from other parents and they signed up to have their kid's bday party here too. We were so impressed that we signed my son up for karate lessons. Over the weekend my family and I was invited to their annual summer tournament. We witnessed some of the worse judging imaginable; specifically during the adult sparring tournament. We noticed how one judge gave all the points to one opponent when it was very clear that the person in black/red - purple belt, was the winner over the brown belt. It was disgusting to watch. They should use outside judges instead of using their own staff for an event such as this. We started to feel sorry for the purple belt as he was blatantly screwed over. read more

Where else can your child spar on a Saturday morning and come back to compete in group video games at night? Very happy with this family owned business. Our previous karate studio was extremely nice but it was more franchised and our son was moving up in belts but he wasn't getting enough (so it was a studio that worked for a younger kid but wasn't challenging or developing them as they matured). We have been at the current studio for 1.5 years and we are just as happy as when we started. They have plenty of classes for all age ranges up to adults. They develop children and teens not just in skill but also with responsibility and team work. There's REAL sparring and tactical classes that they work one on one with the clients. I also like that they have events every month (and every week during the summer) where they bring the kids and teens together on a social level and incorporate things they are interested in. Two other cool things- this is a large studio/warehouse so there's plenty of room for parents to watch or relax in a private area. They have a huge facility, a separate waiting area for siblings, and a low student-teacher ratio. Their pricing structure is pretty straight forward, with no complicated contracts. Be careful with these guys. They have very shady operation. We enrolled for 4 trial classes last November. At the time when we signed on, we made it very clear that we wanted to try and then decide whether we wanted to continue, and this was agreed upon by Hank with the facility. We took 2 of the 4 classes that we paid for, and decided to stop. We thought this would be the end of it. But for the following 2 months we kept getting monthly bills. We went back to the facility, thinking in goodwill that this was some confusion and would be readily cleared. We were wrong, good will doesn't work with them. They refused to pay us back. We explained that we never wanted to enroll for any further class. We explained that we were never asked whether we wanted to continue, and would have said no if asked. After all this, Will still felt that he had the right to keep our 260 dollars back. What's most disgusting is that they charged us for another 130 dollars even after we talked to them about this whole thing. We are deeply disturbed by Will's behavior. He tries desperately to keep our money although knowing that we will not get their service. In response to Hank: I am glad that you took full notice of my review. Hank, you are lying in my face if you say that you didn't offer me a trial month. I was hesitating if I wanted to take any class at all, and you offered that we could try for a month and then decide. Then you hurried back to instruct the class of that day, and I stayed at the counter and paid. There was no mention that your fine print 'auto-billing agreement' was to appear on the receipt before I paid you, and I would never have agreed to these terms if it was brought to my attention. I was never aware of these fine prints until I found out about your billing on my statement and went back to check what was going on. You charged us again on Feb 24, which makes the total 260. This is after we went to talk to you and explained what had been going on. You mentioned that Will followed up with me. Will admitted to us that the email he had on file had a typo and acknowledges that the email would have not reached us. You said Will called us in the following months, but I never got his missed call or voice mail. I were not aware you were going to charge me until we checked out statements. As a merchandise, you failed to explain your policy to us, and never asked us if we wanted to sign on a monthly class, to which I would have said no. At this point, I don't think you offering me credit means anything to me. I made it clear to you that we don't want to take any more of your class. Please block my daughter's name from the stuff you are posting. She has nothing to do with what's going on here. Bottom line, you did offer that we could try, and never mentioned anything about signing on for repeated classes. If I was ever asked whether I wanted to take any class in addition to first month, I would have said no. read more

My son has been in classes with Mr. Will and Mr. Hank for three years and has progressed to brown belt (one short of black). When he started he had some balance and coordination problems, but has overcome these. He's made some great friends in the class, had a lot of fun, and his self-confidence has improved tremendously. When we've gone on vacation or needed to take a hiatus, we always gave the requested 30 day notice and had no problems with them suspending our billing. We love this school. The instructors are very interactive, young, energetic and fun. They are able to teach your children martial arts and more importantly discipline, respect and focus. My son has been going to WCMAA for over 5 years, since Kindergarten and is one test away from his Junior black belt. Some of the great things about the school, especially Mr. Will and Mr. Hank are: 1. Discipline - The instructors know how to control a large class of kids and ensure they are behaving correctly. The first school I sent my son to, the instructor could not control him and one other child. Also, my son needed to demonstrate a level of discipline before he was allowed to move up in rank. 2. Variety - Students learn a variety of skills. Sparring, weapons training (staff, numchuks, swords, etc) are taught along with repetition of basic or previously learned skills. Also, students are taught appropriate times they should use these skills, run away, tell an adult, etc. 3. Life Lessons - Students are encouraged and questioned on behaviors like self control, discipline, trying their best, etc. My son loves the school and feels a real sense of accomplishment because of the level that he has achieved.
