    Happy Birthday CJ at WCMAA
    Jennifer S.

We are not karate students, but found WCMAA while searching online for birthday party venues. All my son wanted to do for his 7th birthday was to have an "epic" Nerf battle with his close friends and classmates. I submitted an inquiry on their website and the studio owner, Will, quickly responded. Booking process was easy and seamless and Will was quick to reply to subsequent emails. On the day of the party, we were greeted by two young, but experienced instructors. They were beyond helpful from unloading our car and assisting with setup, to confidently organizing all party games and activities. The instructors also gave our younger guests extra attention, demonstrating how to shoot the Nerf blasters and offering lots of supportive encouragement. Additionally, they ensured everyone was included in the fun and avoided injury by enforcing "safe play" rules and happily rearranged obstacles at the kids' requests. Their enthusiasm, solid crowd control, and positive attitude elevated the whole party experience, which allowed the adults to relax and comfortably socialize while the kids played. At the conclusion of the event, the instructors fully handled clean up and helped us get our belongings to our car. Guns, foam bullets and protective eyewear were provided for use by WCMAA, as well as an indoor "party room" space, two immaculate onsite restrooms and ample seating. Also included was the use of the entire karate studio. Having a truly private party made the event a lot more enjoyable and less chaotic than other parties we've attended in shared space setups. My son can't stop talking about all the fun he had at "the best birthday party ever" and is already campaigning to do the same thing next year. Honestly, what more can you ask for? #momwin

Best place for Kids Karate in RB and 4s Ranch area! We have been to others over the years and this place is hands down the best on multiple levels. Not only is it ran by great guys, they have great instructors all around. Plus they have several instructors at each class to help the student build their skills. It is obvious that they aren't doing this just for the tuition money. There is genuine concern and care for our kids development. Space! Unlike all the other places, kids aren't crammed into a small suite like a can of sardines. This place is huge, warehouse size huge with a nice seating for 'engaged' parents like me to watch the kids. They also do parties for much cheaper than jumpy places, the kids have a blast and the parents can chill and chat. Price is better than any other place and well worth the money. The tuition is nothing compared to the investment and return we are already seeing in my son's confidence. My 6 y/o has been here for only 3 months, but you can tell the change in behavior, wanting to practice, to be good at Karate, to make us and his instructors proud. We use karate as a reward system to help in other areas now and it works....'do homework and read, then you can practice karate.' He comes home reciting the disciplines that he learns from class, showing how to make good decisions instead of bad ones. I can't tell you there's one thing better than the other at this place. Maybe it's the one where they do movie nights and you can drop off your kids while you run errands or the Nerf gun battles, or the dodgeball tournies. If you are still unsure, check out this place for a trial class, you and your child will be hooked!

My son has been going to the studio since he was three. It has taught him respect, listening, tension, and he has a lot of fun. It's amazing that he has gone from a white belt to testing for his orange belt in just under a year. Master Will is very good with the kids. He also worked with getting a plan that would work with not only my child's age but also my schedule. We take a private class, because we felt they were still to small for the group classes, with another friend and both of them have learned so much with Mr. Will.

Not ever going to do a Chuck E Cheese Bday ever again !!! We are so glad we found this place for our son's 5th bday. We have tried kid ventures, chuck e cheese, jump it up, etc.... We wanted to do something a bit different than the "let your kids run around for an hour, then cake time." My son is into Ninjago this year so he wanted a ninja themed bday party. After endless research, we found West Coast on Google. We were skeptical bc there weren't many reviews on karate bday day parties. I decided to give the place a call and ended up setting a time to meet Will to go over the details of our party. We met the same evening and after talking to will for 5 mins, we decided to book my son's party, and this was the best decision ever. This is a martial arts academy where they teach kids martial arts, duh ;) The facility was awesome. It's located in a business park in 4s Ranch/Rancho Bernardo. It has 2 rooms with AC where my wife was able to come a little bit early to setup the decorations and food. We booked the package where Will allows you to bring in your own food. Did I mention our party was in Sunday? We were so thankful that Will was able to accommodate us. The best part of having a karate party had to be the karate activities that prepared by the instructor. The instructor for the day was Robert, he was so nice and patient with our little 5 yr olds that they listened to 99% of what he was saying. Activities included an obstacle course (kids favorite), lining up in rows to learn basic karate moves, and a relay. This place is big enough to accommodate big parties. We had 20 kids and 20 adults and it didn't feel crowded at all. A special thanks again to all the West Coast Team for making my son's 5th bday party super spectacular. We got kudos from other parents and they signed up to have their kid's bday party here too. We were so impressed that we signed my son up for karate lessons. Karate has helped him learn to be calm and graceful, which is always a plus around the house.

Nathan and Zachary are all smiles after completing their testing and moving up to yellow belt!!!

My two boys, Zachary (10) and Nathan (6), have been going to WCMAA for about 3 mos now. They both love going to their classes 2-3 times a week and eagerly finish their homework early so they can go. Hank and Will and all the other assistants work great with the kids and they all take the time to make sure all the students are learning new skills and challenges and working towards their goal of advancing to the next belt. In addition to learning martial arts, my boys are also learning about discipline, how to be respectful towards others and how dedication and hard work can help you achieve success in all aspects of their lives. This is definitely a positive influence and unlike some other sports we sometimes force upon them, they thoroughly enjoy going to their martial arts and parkour classes!!!

I love how large this studio is...this is half of the space.

I encouraged her to speak up to the instructor, and I also inquired about the criteria used to select for reward. The next day, I received a long email that not only judged but also insulted my parenting skills. The email included condescending statements like, "I do not mean to insult but it is what it is," and "I have way more experience at parenting than you guys." I was also told that I "need to apologize to Sensei Shannon in front of Amia to show respect to the authority." This kind of response implies that she believes she is better and more experienced at parenting, which is both presumptuous and offensive. My child respects her teachers. I originally identified this studio through a social media ad and then saw their videos, fbook, instagram, etc. I submitted the inquiry online and received prompt, courteous and clear communications from Sarah, New Members Coordinator, Lead Instructor, Carlsbad. We didn't have the pleasure of meeting Sarah in person but I appreciated her quick responses and ease to schedule our first introduction to the studio. Within a week, we had the opportunity to come by for a Saturday trial class at the Rancho Bernardo location. There are two studios: Rancho Bernardo and Carlsbad. The Rancho Bernardo one is near the fire house/ Webb Park (heading toward the library) and conveniently located in a shopping plaza. Our kiddos were in the 4-6 age range and they have no martial arts training or background (besides watching ninjago and thinking ninjas are super cool). They had a blast in class. Coach Chandler (?) was supported by some older volunteer students and other coaches. I was impressed with the teacher to student ratio, cleanliness of the studio, and the firm but loving direction provided. For example, I very much liked that the lead coach explained clearly to the young kids that screaming is not acceptable when saying "Yes Coach!" The instruction was easy to understand for the young kiddos. And he meant what he said. When one kid blatantly stepped out of line (class clown of the hour), Coach Chandler firmly and politely had the kid sit out the fun activity and then took the time to speak with the kid one-on-one and explain what the kid had done wrong. It was very impressive and well executed. We aren't familiar with martial arts in general but they explained they are a type of martial arts that is not form based (like Tae Kwon Do). They lean on many of the similar concepts but it's more defense instruction (how to actually execute a kick or punch properly so that a child can learn to protect themselves). I thought that was interesting to learn. The backbone to their program is the mindset they want to cultivate with young kids. They have a very well thought out program and in fact the first paper they gave us states: "We begin the Martial Art training journey not with punches and kicks, but with central lessons called Tenets." I REALLY liked this concept. They integrate parents into the learning process and help set attainable and age appropriate goals. Very well thought out program. Great leaders. Fun kids and coaches.. the kids loved it. We didn't participate this round just due to scheduling conflicts.. but do VERY MUCH recommend checking them out and scheduling a trial. One thing is to understand/discuss prior to your trial is the investment (they do offer a substantial discount for signing up same day as your trial) and the schedule. We may find ourselves back to join in the Spring but I did want to applaud the business. Girls and boys alike would excel in a studio like this.

I started with SKMA back when it all began as a side hustle for Mr. Cowell as he was (I believe) a student at SDSU. In fact, we originally were using a church for class prior to SKMA moving into their current locations. I trained underneath Brian Cowell for approximately 7-8 years. There are no better boxing coaches or applied martial arts coaches, than Mr. Cowell himself. I can firmly attest to that having now lived all across the world and having avidly boxed in a few other locations inside this country and out. Mr. Cowell and his staff have a very solid history of being overtly friendly, extremely experienced, very diligent and very dedicated to Martial Arts as both a training regime and as a lifestyle. Martial Arts is not only a great means to get into shape, but when applied more mentally it creates a mindset which few hurdles in this world can stop. Every aspect of my life, and the quality of person I am today, is based in the foundation that SwiftKick Martial Arts, and Brian Cowell himself, instilled in me through years of training approaching a decade ago. If that is not a testament to a very worth wild investment, I don't believe I know what is. In terms of Martial Arts training and capability. Due my job, which works in the Anti Terrorism field, there have been more occasions than I have fingers and toes where I have had to rely on the techniques and skills I acquired through years of training from SKMA. It just works. Hopefully there is never a time to need to resort to violence. BUT.. if there is ever a time where you must, for the purpose of self defense, there is no greater means to prepare yourself.

I have mild to moderate wedge compressions on 8 vertebrae and 4 disc bulges, one of which became a herniated disc about two years ago. Physical therapy and chiropractors seemed to aggravate the herniated disc. I ended up in severe pain after those sessions with limited mobility for weeks. Additionally, since the herniated disc, I've lost significant muscle mass (especially in my legs as I was no longer able to bend down and had severely limited mobility for months). The herniated disc also caused sciatica, which would cause muscles in my leg or hips to tense up to where I was unable to bend them, numbness in my upper left leg, and occasionally extreme nerve pain in my upper left leg. Enter Balance Martial Arts and Shifu Peter Wu! Although I had hoped that the Tai Chi would help with my posture and provide some improvement, Shifu Peter Wu taught me several Qigong exercises which have had an enormously beneficial effect on me. Years of being in a desk job created a slight, but noticeable hunch in my back. When I was younger (30's), the only way to fix it would be visits to the chiropractor, however the fixes would only last days. After practicing one of Shifu Peter's Qigongs for a few weeks, I was able to resolve that issue for over a month now with occasional practices of the exercise. I was never able to fix that on my own before! Additionally, the standing exercises he has taught me, has helped strengthen my lower back and hip girdle significantly. That coupled with seated Qigong with postural corrections, and some other exercises he taught me, I've eliminated most of the pain in my lower back. The stances from the standing exercises and Tai Chi have additionally started building up my leg strength again. All of this has had a significant increase on my mobility and energy levels. After years of "good and bad days", where good days meant only mild pain, I now see a light at the end of the tunnel! Now my good days mean no pain and I have increased range of motion! This has only been with 3.5 months. I can't wait to see how much better I'll be in another year. Shifu Peter is one of the few people who's had an opportunity to train in Chen Village (the birthplace of Tai Chi), as well as at the Shaolin temple. His teaching style is great, supplying me with new information and refinements in every class, and he is extremely supportive and flexible in showing me exercises to help improve my practice, and to help me along with my back. There's still a long road ahead of me for fixing all of the issues in my back, but I haven't had this much success in any other methodology I've tried, let alone in such a short period of time. I can't give enough accolades to Shifu Peter Wu and the practices that he's taught me!
