I am only a few days out of surgery, but I am just beside myself at how well I have been prepared for my surgery and treated by everyone at BMI of Texas. If you are looking in the San Antonio area I would highly recommend them. Everyone has been very nice from day one. 1. My mom died a few days before my first appointment. I had cried when I was waiting in the room for my doctor. When the nurse saw me she came over and hugged me and cried with me. She shared a story about her dad that had passed. It was comforting. I really needed a hug that day. 2. Dr. Englehardt was very patient. He listened to me and is a very nice genuine person. Before my surgery he answered any questions I had and was confident in his answers. He's has a lot of experience and was easy to talk to. After my surgery I was at the hospital for two days. He came in twice over the weekend to check on me. I was surprised, but very thankful. 3. My advocate, Rachel was awesome. She was there to answer all of my questions about FMLA, blood work, and just general questions about the process. She helped make sure I was doing everything right. I would have not gotten everything done correctly without her. 4. They provided videos for us to have that went over basic nutrition, weight loss procedures, what to expect before and after, what medicines to take after, and pretty much anything I needed to know before and after the surgery. It prepared me for everything. I enjoyed having the videos so I could rewatch them, which I did several times to make sure I did everything right. I keep myself pretty busy and I can be a little forgetful. The videos were amazing references and helped answer a lot of questions I had. 5. They give us a weight loss app called baritastic to use that has all the information I need to be successful. It helps me track my food and water. I can set up reminders to take my medicines and vitamins. I can look up information about my doctor and send him emails. I can order my vitamins or protein drinks on the app. It has links to all the videos, it has recipes, and I can log my weight and measurements and upload pictures of myself to see my progress. There's much more on the app tbh. It's awesome. 6. The surgery was done at Foundation Surgical Hospital. The nurses were amazing. They all were just so kind and patient. Some even came in and chatted with me and a few times I went to them and chatted. I am a talker, so I enjoyed that. I was up and walking with minimal pain after the surgery. I do have a high tolerance for pain, but my pain level never went past a 2 out of ten and really the pain was either minimal or non-existent. I have been home for a little under 24 hours and I have not needed any medicine for pain or nausea. There are many more reasons why I love BMI of Texas (like free and easy parking and txt message reminders) but these are just some examples of why my overall my experience has been amazing. I have a follow up in two weeks and I'm excited to see how I am doing. I have had a great experience at BMI of Texas. Unfortunately my experience was not at all a good one. I was referred to this office by primary doctor after I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. My mom called for two weeks and spoke to numerous employees who have a recited script basically something along the lines of " so sorry but the Dr.s are completely booked until Sept. " After explaining my diagnosis, she got the same scripted response. When she asked to speak to a supervisor, she was told the supervisor hardly ever comes to the office because she has a very ill spouse. A friend of the family attempted to help by calling and trying to get an appt for herself since she just had surgery two weeks ago at the same office. She gets the exact same scripted response. Did it matter that she was a recent surgery patient? No, they were still sorry but had no appts until at least a month later. The problem here is more than scheduling in my opinion. It seems they are great at taking the insurance money but not so great at delivering patient care. Our family friend had to go to her primary care doctor to be seen after surgery because she still can't get an appt to see her surgeon who has been on vacation since June and will not be available until sometime in September. Fortunately my primary care doctor found another doctor who saw me immediately and I am recovering from surgery. My PCP apologized profusely and tells me he will take that office off of his referral list. His office manager also complained that requesting records for mutual patients from them is basically useless as all they get is forwarded to a voicemail that never gets returned and records never get sent. Good luck to any person who makes the mistake of trusting their health to these doctors. Their office staff is made up of uncaring individuals who are obviously just there to collect a paycheck. My mother literally got off the phone in tears. I suggest this office clean house and get some qualified employees starting with the office manager who finally responded the day before my surgery at another office. My mom was even told to address her Problem to the doctor who conveniently was not available to take her call nor had any appt availability because he was getting ready to leave on vacation. (Another employee told her he just got back from vacation and yet another employee told Mom that there were "political" issues within the office workers and that's why she was getting the run around) Obviously, there are scheduling, attendance and staffing issues at this office. I would not recommend that experience to any person going through an already frightening and serious medical issue. What ever happened to doctors focusing on trying to heal the sick and providing patient care? The doctor who did the surgery on moms friend was reported to the Texas Medical Board. Of course, she was told he is on vacation since sometime in June. How do you do a surgical procedure and then leave town on vacation? Seriously?! read more

Attempting to frame this situation as a simple "policy clarification" while conveniently labeling me as "aggressive" is a textbook example of gaslighting. Let's be honest--what really happened was poor communication, mishandling of the situation, and an outright refusal to take accountability. At no point was I aggressive. In fact, it was your office manager who became combative and defensive--not just with me, but directly with the Cigna representative on a three-way call. When the representative attempted to clarify your misstatement about policy and contractual obligations, the response wasn't professionalism--it was hostility, followed by the call being abruptly disconnected. That's not how respectful or competent offices handle patient concerns; that's how they avoid accountability. I also find it incredibly telling that rather than acknowledge these facts, you've doubled down by trying to reframe the narrative to protect the office's image. This response only solidifies what I experienced firsthand--a lack of compassion hidden behind the convenient excuse of "policy" and a clear prioritization of billing practices over patient care. Let's call this what it really is: a case of inconvenience being more profitable than integrity. And while policies may dictate procedures, they should never excuse dishonesty, deflection, or a lack of basic human decency. Here's hoping the same energy spent crafting lengthy responses to negative reviews eventually makes its way into improving patient care and communication. I had my life saving gastric bypass surgery at the age of 52 may 2012, at that time I weighed 232 pounds had a 40-42 inch waist, wore an xl-xxl shirt and I am 5 foot 6, I was a very brittle diabetic, in and out of the hospital for one reason or another. Just before the surgery, I have been on a diet for 15 years, during this time in my life I was a very active person, I own a game hunting ranch that required a lot of work. I was taking 19 pills a day and a shot of insulin. Trying to be a good diabetic my sugars were in the 400's my a1c's where 12 -13, my triglycerides were so high they could not be measured my bmi was 39-40 I think, I was dying. I have always been a healthy active outdoors man full of life all my life. I was about to give up. Then I met with Dr. Duperier and Dr. Seger. These two saved my life. Since the surgery I lost 90 pounds weighed 140 with a 29 inch waist, small to medium shirt. I had normal sugars a1c's like 6.0 then 5. Something triglyceride's in the better than normal range, bmi 24-25, good cholesterol thru the roof high 50's I believe. Perfect health, nothing in bold on my blood panel report just amazing. My biggest problem I wanted to gain some weight so I started working out lifting weights added 15 pounds. I weigh 155, 30 inch waist medium shirt and feel 100 percent. Learned quickly how to reinvent my eating habitats, learned the signs of getting full and knowing where to stop. Funny thing when I push the envelope I start to sneeze, a trigger to stop eating. I can honestly say that BMI of Texas changed my life. I had been researching bariatric surgery for a few years and backed out twice with two different bariatric doctors in San Antonio. Something was just not quite right. I saw a BMI commercial in January of 2014 and figured why not. My husband was a huge skeptic. I called and we met with Dr. Mickey Seger. He is such a down to earth, genuine person, he made us feel at ease immediately. Instead of telling me what would happen, he asked me questions, showed genuine concern and answered any and all questions we had. He took his time and made sure to explain everything well. I have survived kidney cancer as well as melanoma, so the thought of putting myself through more appointments was a little overwhelming. Welcome to the land of modern technology. You will find yourself leaving voicemails or told to send an email. I was over billed and still cannot get a clear answer regarding my bill. My 2 week after surgery appt was canceled 3 times before I finally got seen 7 weeks after my surgery. I called and complained and was told to email the doctor directly because the office manager was never in the office or wouldn't take my call and the doctor should be aware as the doctors have no idea of what goes on. The office staff has no consideration for our time. They schedule us and leave us waiting for 45 minutes or more but are quick to cancel me if I'm a few minutes late. If you do go here which I recommend you do not! Be sure to check with your insurance to see what they are billing you for and watch out for what they report. I was told by my insurance company that I was diagnosed with illnesses that I certainly have never had before I went to this clinic. Acid Reflux is something I've never had but they told me it would help with the insurance billing so now I have acid reflux. I question the integrity of the claims they have filed and have informed my ins company. They also forget to inform you of "uncovered" charges and nickle and dime the patients like crazy. Very unorganized and calls are never returned. read more

The doctors and staff are the absolute BEST!! When I first met with the doctors they explored every option with me and provided me with the information that I needed to help me decide what procedure was best for me. I was overweight, had high blood pressure, high cholesterol, very bad GERD and I was absolutely miserable. I had gastric bypass surgery July of 2009..I am currently at a total weight loss of 105 pounds. I have gone from a size 22 to a size 8-10. The choice to have weight loss surgery was the best decision I have ever made for myself and my health. I highly recommend the Bariatric Medicine Institute (BMI) in San Antonio, TX, if you are serious about losing weight the healthy way. I contacted this office for help after spending the last 30 years of my life gaining weight. Once I got accepted for treatment (insurance, medical documentation, etc.), I was informed that, prior to surgery, I would have to wait 6 months. During this time, i would be required to lose a certain percentage of my body weight on my own. To help with this, I would also be required to meet with one of their Dieticians once per month. Once the Dietician explained to me how my body processed food and how to read Nutritional labels, I lost 4 times MORE than I was required to lose! In the end, I made the decision NOT to have the surgery, and I have kept the weight off for 2 years. I have even lost more! You would think that I wouldn't hear from BMI ever again, but it's not the case. I continue to receive invitations to attend their monthly support group meetings. The lap band is a tool to assist in weight loss. The procedure is effective only if you dedicate your goal by an entire life change of old eating habits. BMI offers the medical procedure, a skilled dietitian, and support groups. Most of all, you are more than a customer; you are person given the care and love required to accomplish a difficult goal that is obtainable. Predicated by injuries received in combat physical exercise was almost impossible. My recovery begun by walking to the mail box, addressing the extreme pain with a post surgical treatment plan. Since my procedure I dropped 4 dress sizes. I have a daily exercise program of walking 4 to 8 miles and a weight training program to sculpture my body with the last remaining pounds to a body I can be proud. Avoid like the plague. Never waited less than an hour in this waiting room. I needed gallbladder surgery, but their speciality is gastic bypass and weight reduction surgery. I chose him primarily because he has experience working on heavier patients and a friend of mine went to him. Was sitting in his office in pain from gallbladder issues and there he was, trying to sell me on gastric bypass. Uh...no. His office staff is a nightmare - was having post surgery complications and was told "Oh, nobody can see you because you're not a bariatric patient". Wound up in emergency room for a possible PE four days after surgery and nobody from his staff would call me back or let me speak with a PA or nurse. So I called a nurse from my insurance company and she told me to get myself to an ER right away. Recently went back after two years and nothing has changed. I ended up in the ER again after they scheduled me for an EGD weeks out despite of my complaints of severe stomach pain and constant vomiting. Could go on but you get the point. AVOID. read more

Dr. Duperier and his staff are wonderful! Despite all of my fears, I had the Lap Band surgery 13 months ago. I knew that I needed help to get my weight off and I had already tried everything available to me. My weight has been gradually coming off and I have changed my lifestyle completely. I eat healthier and feel so much better and energized. The Lap Band was the help that I needed to allow me to lose the weight. However, the Lap Band and my weight loss would not be occurring if I didn't have the right surgeon to make it happen. Dr. Duperier in my opinion is the BEST. His staff has been my support system. They are courteous, they set my appointments conveniently and their food and supplements at the clinic are also very good. Since I can remember I have always been overweight. As a child my parents believed "a fat baby was a healthy baby". Now as an adult we find that this is not true. In my case, I found myself turning to food for comfort. As the years went by I struggled with my weight. After having children my weight increased even more. I could not get a handle on it. I finally decided to ask my doctor for help after years of many weight loss support groups and many other attempts at weight loss. My doctor suggested I try BMI. BMI was a life saver for me. I feel that I owe my life to Dr. Duperier. I went to him to have a hernia repair. He told me that I needed to lose weight first. Within a week I was approved (thanks Vanessa!) and scheduled for a gastric by- pass revision. In the early nineties I had my stomach stapled. In another operation another surgeon undid the stapling. Dr. D gave me hope. I have gone from a 5X shirt to a XL. My waist went from 62" to 37". I hope to lose another eleven pounds . The BMI staff are the most caring individuals!! They are a great team. Dr. Seger, Dr.Chad-intern,and Melinda Gongalez-PA round out Dr. Duperier's team. I have gotten great care and encouragement from all of them. My hernia is repaired, I no longer need my sleep apnea machine and have no need for my blood pressure medicine. 11-07-2007 I had gastric by pass surgery with Dr. Duperier and Dr. Seger. That was the best day of my new life. I went from a size 22 to less than half that size. For me it was never to see how much weight I could loose but how I could become more healthier and make better life choices with my new tool. ( The by pass) It is not always easy giving up the bad stuff we eat but with the help of the support staff, support groups, the gym and new gastric by friends we have a great support network with the doctors and staff. I have personally emailed Dr. Duperier and he emails me back about questions I need medical advice on. Let me start by saying I have never done a review on anyone before but Dr. D has inspired me to do my first. He is absolutely all about the patient. I have had 2 surgeries performed by him, 10 years apart. I had to go to the ER on New Year's Eve, not as result of the surgery but rather not being able to keep anything down. The ER called him to let him know I was there. Dr. D was leaving another hospital after performing procedures all day, yet he came to the ER to see me rather than going on with his New Year's Eve plans. Besides being a wonderful surgeon he is very caring and truly cares about the individual. Nurse practitioners, Janice and Amy, are also amazing. They, too, let you know how important your health is to them. Highly recommend this practice!! I cannot say enough good things about them. read more
