Fell in love back in the early 2000s, when this was the only location and it was a little scuzzy, especially next to bright, big WBB. I scrounged the place for Star Trek novels that hadn't been mangled by the wire shelves, and bought random books that blew my mind then and now I look at and wonder what I was thinking (they were a little pervy, that's why). BMV is pretty much a no-brainer as a go-to place for books. No, you might not always find a specific book, but it's so much cheaper than new, and they often have new books anyway. And they have comics, and if they have the ones you want, you can save a BUNDLE. Now, for selling to them. I've only had one experience, when I moved from my parents' house. I brought in pounds and pounds of books. I brought in several books I had bought from them. They didn't give me more than $1-2 a book, and didn't buy all of them. I don't know what made them buy one book and not another. And you know what? It really didn't bug me. If you already have a car (or your dad does), it's better than dropping them off for $0 somewhere else. They're a business, and if they don't want to buy something, then whatever. They take the risk of buying my books and I don't really care if they make a big profit, because I don't have the time or space to sell my books off one by one for more. I was pretty happy with what I got. That all said, I'd advise tempering your expectations. If you live in the downtown area and it's not a big pain to get down to a location, selling your books can be worth it for you. The more effort you have to put into doing this, the more likely you'll be disappointed by the returns. For anyone expecting to hit the jackpot, you won't. I read several reviews where they had a bad experience selling because of the buyer's attitude, which sucks. I don't discount those experiences at all. For me, I actually had a really positive experience. The buyer wasn't insanely nice, but he was fairly open about what he wanted and didn't. He also offered to dispose of the books neither of us wanted (and if he just sold them anyway ... again, I was just going to trash or give them away). THEN. He found out I was moving so he said they didn't have boxes at that location, but the Annex one did if I wanted free boxes. That was nice. read more

Good prices, especially compared to the giant bookstore next door. Decent and very interesting selection of books and graphic novels. We spent a long time browsing at the WBB without finding a thing worth buying. Here we bought books within minutes. read more

If you buy: 5/5 If you sell: 1/5 More about buying: Most books are priced reasonably and you'll frequently find nice cheap books, especially if they show wear (e.g. I found a copy of "Brave New World" for $3...) More about selling: The thing is... even though they sometimes sell books very cheap, what they give you when you sell is still a lot, lot less. It is ridiculous, in fact. I just went there with 4 books and 3 manga volumes. Two of the books, I bought at their store a couple of months ago for about $25. Were still in the same condition today as the day I bought them. The mangas were even mint-condition, one of them even still wrapped with the original packaging. Value: about $14 per volume new. So that's a total of $67 (The two books I didn't buy there were rejected). One might say that half the price would be reasonable. or maybe even $20-25. What I got was $15!! Are you kidding me?! I remember when the owner was still working/part owner at ABC bookstore on Yonge st, many years ago. Very nice man who was always friendly to the customers, knew a lot about books/comics. I remember when he first open this location, crazy busy because he was much cheaper than his neighbour. Even today the selection and prices are hard to beat. I still love going there. Abc bookstore and BMV are two of the best used book stores in the G.T.A. Toronto just wouldn't be the same if we lost either one. So why the 3 stars? Two reasons. 1: Some of the people that have been past employees were not customer oriented. Lots of attitude, low on common sense. Happily ALL of them are gone but BMV in a whole has had some bad csr's at their locations in the past. -1 star. 2: They buy books/comics at very low prices,which is good for the customers but not the sellers. They've killed the back issue comic market and offer crazy low prices for 1st appearances like Wolverine's back in Hulk 181. Even Silver Snail offers more money. -1 star. If you are buying then this place has it all at great prices. If you are selling, this place offers low prices which is not great for you. There's been a few great staff that's been there for ages like the older,grey haired tall guy who prices books. Super nice guy and also a few other nice csr's from Annex/Eglinton but unfortunately a few bad seeds have put a sour taste in a few of my friends mouths over the years. read more

I love this store however there are a few qualms that I have with the store, that I will address later on. First of all I don't live in the area and would have to take the GO to get over here so I can't leave empty handed. Every time I come here I spend at least an hour in the store in two sections, Literature, and Comics. The literature has lots of great choices, but don't expect some of the crew working there to find what you are looking without an updated system to keep track of what's in stock. The first time I came here I spent around $100 on comics at that time the majority of the comics were 50 cents and $1.00, recently though they bumped those prices to at least $1.50-$2.50. This is understandable for them to make money but now it just doesn't seem worth it especially with the condition of some of the books. The last place that i occasionally take a glance at is the language section to see if they have any really good Japanese tutorials, they are good in that if they come with a cd in a book it's there. Most language books are $9.99. The final aspect that stops this location from getting a 5 star is what appears to be prejudice towards some ethnicity's by one of the workers. His attitude is awful. Also they are open to bash homosexuals if the customer brings up the topic. In a world that is somewhat accepting and a city that welcomes all types of people the open bashing was really appalling. Besides from the one employee the store is great but, They really need to update the organization system that's a must. read more

Even though this is a chain of used book stores, this one has to be my favorite. Less than a block from The Eaton center, I always have to make a stop hear to see what treasures I can find. The staff is helpful, and friendly. read more

Been here numerous times. Kinda know my way around by now and it's definantly not hard to find something worth reading at an awesome price.

My recommendation for you you is that if your going to sell books there, don't. I brought 8 books there and I only got seven dollars out of it. The books that I had wanted to sell Were valued $15 and above and in perfect condition and the guy who paid for them at that point didn't even glance at them. I went to another place (kinda looked like a pawn shop to me) and talked to the owner and the guy bought Every single book I had for 4$ each (about 30 books) and I did have a signed book and the guy at bmv offered $3...at the other place the guy offered to buy it at it's original price plus an additional %20 on top of that. (I guess he really wanted it) so in short it was a crappy experience for me at bmv. I will buy books from there,i'll just never sell anything there anymore. read more

My favourite bookstore in the city. Great selection and most of the books are in perfect condition. They're basically new books at used prices. Finish off your shopping with a burger at 5 Guys nearby. read more

If you're looking to sell books, or even to be treated with decent respect as a person, don't bother coming here. I brought in a few books (published 2010-ish) today in tip-top condition and just wanted to ask about them since I've never sold books before, but was rudely turned away by the buyer who simply told me "not interested". End of conversation. He didn't even look at them. When I asked what type of books they buy, he just said "newer books". All the while paging through books from two decades ago. My roommate has also had poor experiences there with low-balling (as mentioned on this page already). I would not return. read more

A nice inexpensive place to get books, comics, and DVDs.

I order a lot of books on line but I also like to browse in bookstores to find things I would not otherwise know about. BMV on Edward Street is close to where I volunteer once a week. Often after my shift I go to the bookstore to browse. They have used and remaindered books and the prices are very fair. Whether I buy something or not it is a nice place to spend some time. The staff are friendly and helpful. read more

A good selection of books, but rude employees. Doesn't matter how good a selection of stuff the store has to offer, if the employees are rude, then nobody would want to deal with them. Oh, and they won't take any books that they think it won't sell, yet they said in their website that they'll take any books except old computer books. I won't be going there anymore. read more
