The instant you walk through the door, it is obvious that this place was built on love and intention. The space is filled with art from floor to ceiling but doesn't feel cluttered. It kinda feels like a big, warm art hug when you walk through the doors. A lot of the art has a kind of "hippie/spiritual" vibe to it. The art filling the studio is colorful and expressive. They showcase multiple artists' work and have a few studios that you can walk through as well as the main gallery hall. In an effort to plan an activity that didn't involve stuffing our faces for a least 30 minutes, I scheduled a VR session at Better Than Unicorns. My husband was initially skeptical, but I pushed him to go. While my motion sickness didn't allow me to get beyond the first game (pro tip: take a non-drowsy Dramamine 30 min before your appointment if you also suffer from this unfortunate condition), my husband absolutely LOVED the entire experience. We both had fun because he got to try out several different games and I got to watch him on the massive screen directly behind him (side note: your spouse in the VR headset flying through a make believe city makes for a pretty epic boomerang lol). We had such a good time that we bought an Oculus when we got home and have really enjoyed playing/sharing the experience with our friends. Final verdict: If you want to tryout the highest quality VR before taking the $400+ plunge for a personal headset (or just want to take a break from drinking and eating), definitely schedule a session with Better Than Unicorns. BONUS TIP: The building is just around the corner from French Broad's Chocolate Factory -- so after our VR we only had to walk a few yards for a 30-min chocolate factory tour and a liquid truffle. Walter was our VR guide and was so patient with us newbies and very accommodating of our requests to play different types of games. And man, do they have a lot of games! I felt like I could have asked if he had anything where I could ride a T-rex through the Wal-mart and he would have said "sure, let me pull that up"...amazing! It was also hilarious to watch others in the group play. Whether they were walking the plank or punching out bad guys, we could see what they were seeing on the big screen, as well as watch them react to it in the real world. Too funny. Thanks to Walter and the BTU crew for a great afternoon that we'll be talking about for a long time. We're already planning our next visit!

Well, my friend and I had a girl weekend in Asheville and tried a few fun workouts while we were in…read moretown. My girlfriend has been an aerialist for 4-5 years now and I've only taken one class before but we knew we'd love it. I figured if I couldn't manage any of the moves well, at least I could provide comic relief, right? The other young lady in our group was an Asheville local who just started lessons a month and a half ago, so between us there were many skill levels represented. Being a compact space, there are only four silk stations available so we had the privilege of watching the instructor on a set of silks as well. Carly lead us through a stretching warm up before we practiced with the silks. When Carly saw what we were able to manage she would add to it, varying the tasks for each of us as we all had wildly different strengths and weaknesses. The music was fun, Carly was patient and had wonderful verbal cues as well as demonstrating for me when the verbal clues left me scratching my head. I wish I lived closer and could build my upper body strength and enjoy this unique workout more often. It was hard and fun and two days later my shoulders and back are still sore but I'd go back tomorrow if I could! Now, where is my Cirque du Soleil contract???

The lyra really digs into you, but what doesn't kill you makes you stronger, and doubling up on fabric would probably also be pretty helpful. I'd been itching to take either a pole class or an aerial silks/lyra class for ages, and since I plan my travels around food and awesome fitness classes (priorities, right?), I definitely had to make a stop here before leaving Asheville! I called beforehand to make sure that it was okay for me to take the aerial lyra class, and the lady I spoke to was really helpful and friendly. (I'd only taken one class before, and that was quite unfortunately back in early 2012, so uh...it's been a while!) ...But my goodness, this was a super fun class! Evan was our instructor, and there was only one other student, so we started the class off with a light warmup, and then jumped right in. Evan was really good about explaining everything, and also in evaluating where we were at so that he could tailor the class to our level. We took turns going through a sequence and learning how to clean it up and make it look pretty + fluid. He was also really great about giving us pointers and cues, which was definitely helpful when we were puzzling out a couple of the moves. All in all, super super fun, and I really hope to come back to Asheville at some point again to visit, and so I can take more classes here! The handbalancing class that Evan teaches looks like a lot of fun, and I'd love to take more aerial lyra (+ silks!) classes!

This bridge, like many, apparently outlived its usefulness as a conveyance, but was turned into a…read moresort of park. The greenery covering the area is quite robust and a lot of effort clearly went into designing and maintaining it. At one end, a spot for people to hang collars up to memorialize their dogs demonstrates that apparently visitors here like tiny yippy dogs a lot more than I do, but it is still a nice touch. When I visited, they were working on building a visitor center and parking was limited (one end is a separate business whose parking lot is devoted solely to that business as designated by numerous angry signs). However, a water fountain and portapotties were still available. This isn't a place where you'd spend an enormous amount of time, but it is well done and certainly worth a look, and there is no charge to cross.

Asheville Drag Brunch does a great job when they put on a production! I have seen a number of…read moreperformances and they never let me down. Each show has a different menu, so it is hard to rate the food. I have had Biscuit Head Brunch, Sweet Monkey Catering, and even their own catering from "Divine's Kitchen" which is a southern meal of BBQ! I have never been disappointed, there is always enough food to go around and the people serving the food are always helpful and kind! I will continue to go to Asheville Drag Brunch events, plus they are all fundraisers for local charities. I love following their page and going to events that fundraise for things I support- a show, food, and donation is well worth the 25 dollars you pay!
