After calling around several boatyards in the area, and getting ridiculous quotes with far-away timelines, I stumbled upon Boat Stuff. George was very helpful in fixing up our small sailboat. He painted the bottom of the boat, buffed and waxed the hull, fixed some chips, and replaced some wood components on the boat with starboard. The boat looks so much better now and it feels good to have it fixed up. George also helped to create a mast support and repaired and restored our rudder and tiller handle. We are new boat owners and it helped to get a complete survey on the boat and trailer from George. He gave us advice on what needed to be fixed and referred us to other marine businesses in the area for things outside his wheelhouse. The process took longer than we originally expected and was a bit more pricy than we were thinking but I am still happy with our experience. I think in the future we'd be more specific on a budget and timelines. That being said, George was good at communicating by text and sent progress pictures and would incrementally start tasks to make sure that we were still okay with the costs. A few months ago, I saw an ad for a boat that someone was giving away for free. Without thinking, I jumped on it, and sight unseen agreed to take it off their hands. A free boat! How could anyone pass an opportunity like that up? As it turns out, there's a reason why "Old Blue" was free. Surprise! But I'd like to think I'm pretty handy, and I grew up with a dad who restored old cars and believed in repairing things rather than throwing them away. I was certain that Old Blue still had some life left in her. My experience with boats is next to none, so I began calling around do different boat repair shops. Most of them were convinced that Old Blue was a lost cause, and no one was interested in giving me advice. I knew I wanted to do the work myself, but since I'm a total novice, I wanted someone to do a thorough inspection and provide recommendations on how I should proceed. Luckily, I found George. He was super pleasant and didn't condescend or treat me like a "dumb girl." I sent some initial photos so he'd have an idea of some of the problem spots, and then made an appointment to have him come out and check over the boat in person. He was very thorough, looked over everything top to bottom, described what he found, and made recommendations along the way. He told me what absolutely needed repairing, what was optional, what order to approach the realtors, and where to find the materials. He also made suggestions for how to make it more comfortable and provided ideas on how to save money. He also offered to come out again when I'm ready to take the boat out on the water to test it out. George clearly knows his stuff. I didn't have to give him the full story on the boat - he was able to piece together the details just by looking her over. Old Blue is an old, homemade boat constructed of wood and covered in fiberglass, and he recognized every detail on her build that had been conveyed to my by the original owner. I'm used to getting BS'ed by tradesmen who assume I know nothing about cars, construction, etc. (which I actually know a lot about) and George never tried to BS me. He's a trustworthy guy.
