I've being using Boats and Motors for 25+ years. They cared for and repaired my 8hp Nissan outboard until it was no longer worth repairing, at 33 years old. They sold me and cared for a used dingy engine which I've used for years. Recently, they helped me purchase a new Tohatsu MFS 9.8 hp outboard and a 2.3 hp Honda dingy outboard. Over the years they have provided excellent repair and maintenance service, which is why I was able to keep my Nissan for so long. B and M are friendly, conscientious, and honest, know boat engines well, and give good advice about them. They have an excellent chandlery, supplying a wide variety of marine products. If you can't find it there, they can get it for you quickly. They provide great advice to help you with your purchases. I regularly buy bottom paint there and recently received a lot of help and advice from them on fiberglass work I was performing for a modification of the outboard well on my sailboat. I really enjoyed my time and purchase here. I called all over New England trying to find a Tohatsu 15hp motor and finally landed here. They handled the first hour of break in time for me before I arrived and then gave a detailed and thorough walk through and demo to make sure I could operate the motor properly when I left. A couple months back I got back into boating, I had owned a boat probably 20 years ago, owned it for a short time,so I guess that makes new at this.. I bought a used boat and of course not knowing much about it aside from the fact that it did run when I bought it, I brought it to Boats & Motors (first time-I just found them online)to have the whole boat looked over... I dealt with the owner (Fred) the owners wife( Mary) his wife and his daughter... all of which were nothing less than very kind and helpful. So there was quite a bit wrong with the engine...(of course there was)... Fred looked it over, told me everything that what was wrong, walk me through what it would cost to fix and told me everything he was doing the whole way through, he was very thorough. Not knowing much about engines he did his best to explain everything to me. After a short time they called and told me my boat was ready, I picked it up and Fred went over everything he did. I told him I hadn't been around the boats in a long time and that I don't even know if I know how to even start this thing up... he said "its ok, don't worry about it, I'm gonna show you everything". Fred and his daughter took over an hour out of their busy day to go over the whole boat with me...they showed me EVERYTHING I needed to know about the boat. Without any hesitation he cranked up the boat in the yard, hooked it up to water, and In detail he went over every single step about what I needed to do and made sure before I left I knew how to do everything... he said to me "if you have a problem you call me". The boat ran perfect when I got it back and there was no way that I would've been able to get it going unless they had helped me... You can't get better than that from a small family business... I had two great experiences with Boats & Motors this week. On Monday I needed another package of Marine-Tex Rapid-Set adhesive (a fantastic 2-part epoxy), but I could only find it on line. West Marine didn't have it, although the manager said that they had the same material, just packaged for West Marine. Then I recalled driving by Boats & Motors many times previously, so I called and someone said they'd check and call me. They called back a few minutes later to say they had one package left. I went over, bought it, and had a nice discussion with the man and wife owners (both very knowledgeable). (This was about 4 PM; I believe that the store was supposed to close at 2 PM, but they were there and were very nice.) Today, Friday, I needed another package and called them; it was back in stock, but the person said they'd only be there for 15 more minutes. I couldn't get there that quickly, so it looked like Monday. A little while later I was shopping at Lowe's, and they called and said they were out driving around and would be happy to drop it at my house! I was shocked, and said I could be home in 30 minutes. As I got home, their car pulled up and the owners (man and wife) handed me the package and chatted for a couple of minutes. Who gives that kind of great service today? BUYER BEWARE!! or at least be ready for a confrontation. My name is Rick, I am a semi retired recreational boater. Our boat spends seven months out of the year in it's home port in Florida. The boat is trailered between southern Florida and Mass, and we enjoy the summer months boating out of Salem Ma. My boat is professionally maintained in Florida but of course there's always a few things to be repaired when I'm in New England. I am writing this review because of an altercation I had with the owner of Boats & Motors last week that really bothered me and I couldn't stay silent. For some reason this guy just doesn't like me.. I try to be personable and polite but this is the second run-in I've had with this guy getting in my face with accusations. 10 years ago I was SCOLDED for returning a pair of sunglasses. Apparently I don't do enough business here to have the right to return an item that my wife bought for me... and I just stopped going in there for years not wanting to deal with this asshat owner. I have to tell you I am the type of consumer that will go out of his way to patronize a store and help the local economy rather than a large chain or mail order, so over the years I have given this place another chance. Mary, part owner and wife of 'asshat' is the most knowledgeable marine 'parts & service' person I have ever come across, and when I'm unsure of something, I know she'll steer me in the right direction with her knowledge and experience, so that's why I called. With that said, let me tell you how this went down last week. I don't do much maintenance on the boat up here, but I had a compromised water pump impeller and thought it best to change it before the boat goes back in the water. I called Mary to make sure I got the right part and she left me a message stating: I have two options, I have one kit on the shelf a 'Sierra' water pump kit for $73 or I could order you the manufacturers 'Yamaha replacement kit' for $70. I called her back and in my answer to Mary. I replied I usually stay with OEM parts but why not take the 'Sierra' inventory off your hands. This is where I must have gone wrong,, in my innocent choice of words,, I know it's only $3 difference, not a big deal, I actually thought I was making a decision in the best interest of this 'mom & pop' shop in moving an item from their inventory instead of a new item and a new order to be placed and received. BOY, WAS I WRONG, I HAD NO IDEA THIS INNOCENT REMARK WOULD CAUSE THIS OWNER TO GET UP IN MY FACE.. I came into the shop the next day with no idea I was to be ambushed with acquisitions and petty ideology. Apparently Mary took offence to my seemingly innocent comment with the attitude of 'DON'T DO US ANY FAVORS',, 'Taking this inventory off our hands' was written on a postit note that she waved in my face as she tallied up the cost. I was actually looking to purchase more from the shop and started browsing, until the owner 'ASSHAT' Fred started arguing with me.. on the proper etiquette on how to ask or order something through his shop. I take great offence to a store owner that berates his customers after his own wife takes a phone order and 'MISINTERPUTES' the intent of a consumer or reads into things. How dare they scold me for an innocent comment I made IN GOOD FAITH. WHAT IS YOUR PROBLEM FRED??? Is it because I don't do enough business with you??? or are you just a mean old soul, angry about your own failed life taking it out on others?? 'GET OFF MY LAWN' typa guy The repeated disrespect this shop owner has thrown in my face over the years has me questioning my initial motivation of trying to pump a few dollars into the local economy and mom and pop shops. I'm not sure about you but I don't need to be judged or my good intentions EXPLAINED or thrown in my face. These repeated 'BIZZAR' episode reminds me of an old Seinfeld character.. I will still need an occasional boat part,, but I can not take the abrasive behavior of this ownership team and will have to shop elsewhere for my own piece of mind. I needed to get a mooring for my small sailboat; club only gave a couple of weeks warning. Boat & Motors, without my asking, said they would do it in a couple of days and they did! I wasn't sure they'd be able to before I called, so had bookmarked all the components needed online, from defender.com and Amazon, and knew pretty much what the lowest cost could possibly be. That's just about what Boat & Motors charged me. So great service with prices that are perfectly competitive with what I could get online! I've been doing all of my boating business with Woburn boat and motors for 12 years and they have always treated me well. Mary the co-owner is great. She will take her time to research your part. I recently purchased a new prop,it was all beat up with no markings on it. Mary literally spent a half hour looking it up and got me going. I installed it improperly thinking it was whe wrong Item. I brought it back in to have it replaced. Both Mary and Fred spent quite a bit of time with me. Finally a half hour before closing Fred asked if I could bring my boat in that day. Living a few miles away I ran home to hook it up. When I returned Fred took it all apart and reinstalled it then explained what I did wrong as a concerned business owner. I have frequented many different local shops as well as I am a West Marine fan and it has it's place just as Boat's and Motors has it's place as well. If you are someone that likes a glamorous store with fancy displays, mannequins sporting the latest in "fashionable" accessories, as well as having all the latest cool outdoor equipment stick with West Marine. This family owned business is not flashy and has the supplies that you need to maintain and keep your stinkpot, rag bagger, or trailer working it's best. If you are looking for a no BS parts supplier I highly recommend Boat's and Motors. I just purchased a new Tohatsu 20 HP engine setup from Boat's and Motors and I have nothing but great things to say about my experience. The owners (It appears it is multi-generational as their son and daughter were working as well) are no nonsense, right to the point, knowledgeable, and thorough in what they covered and explained to me regarding the engine. I have years of experience working with 2 stroke engines and I found it was helpful the overview and essentially training I received for my new 4 stroke. I was appreciative of their knowledge and experience as they know what they are talking about and if you listen they will help you keep your boat running well for years. They are a small sole proprietorship so make sure to buy something and not try to get information for free. The owner of this place is despicable, rude and condescending. I bought an outboard in 2018 and I have been bringing it to them every winter for service. Every single time without missing a beat I get a lecture about what people do and don't with their outboards and how everybody is stupid (except for him). I can imagine that for him, outboards are the center of the universe but for God's sake, it's just outboards... I ordered a part ($20 I believe) from another Tohatsu dealer because I was out of state and it was more convenient for me. I just took the outboard to them because I couldn't winterize it this year. I asked them to go over everything but I also told him I already had that part. He lost his mind. He is clearly used to speak up his mind with no filter, but he is not used to get a push back. Well, I told him that I wasn't there to get another lecture. I frankly didn't think about ordering the latch for him because at that time it was more convenient to order it from another place. I am in no obligation to order parts from them. Period. As I told him to spare me the lectures, he took the outboard and put it back on my trunk and said, have a good day. So here is the thing. You don't get to speak up your mind with no filter, being rude and condescending, and at the same time lose your shit when someone tells you that you are being rude and condescending. It goes both ways. Otherwise, it's a double standard, and you don't get to have one just because you think you deserve it. The second thing, when you give so much importance to lose the revenue of a $20 part as for being an asshole to your costumers, but then you go as far as to put an outboard back into your costumer's car and loose that revenue (which is greater than $20) it is clear that you don't know how to run your dying business (or other more personal reasons that I would prefer not to mention here). The worst thing is that there are these young employees working in this small family business that think that this is the way of providing service. It is very clear how they are afraid of being yelled by him. You can feel the tension. Perhaps if they focused on providing service without being despots their business would not depend on $20 parts. One call and half an hour later, and I have dropped my outboard off in another place without a drop of unprofessionalism. read more

One of the worst experiences. I went in to get a part for my boat, not 100 % sure if it was the right one. The owner told me I could return it at first. I went out back to get the part and put it in my car which I thought was okay clearly was not. I was then screamed at aggressively saying I was a"thief", it was clear I was only getting the part I already paid for. A simple, please don't touch the part would have done. Although I said I wasn't 100 % sure if it was the correct part beforehand the owner now told me I was now not allowed to have the part and he wasn't selling it to me (I already paid) I told the man that I would still buy it and wouldn't return it and he again screamed and said he wasn't selling it to me. I demanded a credit. This man continued to yell at me. I exclaimed "why are you yelling at me, I didn't do anything to you." "I had a bad day" continuing to yell. His wife then proceeded to scream at me, told me to shut up and I did. This man called me a thief, a faggot and a queer. I left the store in a hurry, and he chased my car. This behavior is never warranted. I will NEVER step back in this establishment again and he should be ashamed at his behavior and his derogatory comments. I've attached photos of Mary's original response which has since been deleted. Mary, For you to say that I'm lying is pretty bold. No one told me not to get the rubrail in the back, as a matter of fact your mechanic asked me if I needed help. I told you I wouldn't return it. Hello everyone. Just dropped off a prop at Boats and More in Wakefield and on the drive home was thinking. My small boat is important to the family and me. Going out is fun, relaxing and regardless of circumstance I have never had a bad day on the water. I am rough on the boat and push the boat a bit harder than many would, frequenting shallows, beaching and the occasional disagreement with a rock. To do all the above I have to have confidence that the boat is in good working order. For the past eight years I have had all my boat maintenance done at Boats and Motors fully knowing the work was done correctly. Mary, Fred and the Boats and Motors crew are outstanding. Simply put... If I could give less stars I would. So f-ing angry. Had my snow blower carb rebuilt by boats and motors in Wakefield. It was not cheap. Guy told me to leave the tank empty until the first snowstorm. Just filled the tank and gas came pouring out of the carb and all over my garage floor. Called them and the guy starts screaming at me (yes screaming) when I explained the issue and (calmly) complained about the repair (it was not leaking gas before and it looks like the carb seals were not replaced properly). My wife called back (he hung up) and got on the phone with a different person who gave serious attitude to her as well (she could still hear the guy screaming in the background). As a first-time client, I have to say that this is probably the most unprofessional I have seen a business act. I know people give them high praise but seriously, I will never recommend them for anything. I get that the night before a storm is stressful but at a minimum, someone needs to act like a functioning adult when speaking to a customer. Update: Fred threatened me for posting this review and stated he would "make my life hell" which was caught on camera. Yes he fixed the issue but I repeat, the issue was with the initial repair and customer service which was terrible. He said he has a lot of loyal customers. Not sure why if threatening people and shouting at them are the norm for this business. Will not recommend. Edit #2: I live in Melrose and Mary's attempt at deflecting my review is poorly done. My fiancée and I recently purchased a 1984 Catalina 25. While I grew up sailing I have almost no experience with engines. Fast forward to putting our 9.8 hp in reverse and having it kick up on us and break one of the brackets for the motor. After an awful trip to West Marine we went to a Tohatsu dealer, boats and motors. Not only were the staff super nice and friendly but they patiently explained what we might have wrong, how to try to fix it ourselves, and what to do if we needed more help. We also purchased a few boat supplies and I noticed some awesome old school sailing supplies and pretty much one of anything you could need for a boat. We will absolutely be back. This is a great local business. Fred and Mary are knowledgeable, helpful and go out of their way to do the right thing for you. The smallish store has an unexpectedly large supply of marine gear. And if they don't stock what you need, they will order it for you. The big box stores and online merchants cannot match their expertise and personal advice. Prices are competitive. I can't help but think that the few disgruntled reviews I have read in Yelp are written by people who either lack knowledge (the most generous interpretation) or are dishonest. Never, and I mean NEVER would I shop there again. I've been a loyal customer for years and have spent thousands of dollars with them in parts and service. Recently after working on the carburetor myself (because they were closed 4 days over 4th of July and weren't open) they berated me and insulted me for buying a part online in a desperate attempt to fix it. Further, Fred took my carburetor apart and became offensive and hostile when I doubted that it was "full of crap" as he claimed, since I had just cleaned it myself twice. Sure enough, when I arrived to pick up the motor, both he and Mary became hostile and verbally abusive to me when I refused to let then "fix" it claiming that it was my fault for trying to do it on my own. They held the motor hostage until I paid them to take it home. These people are not well. I feel badly for them, but I can't pay for service to people like this. Boaters should stick together and help each other. I grew up here and I will always pay for good service and to keep local businesses going. Never Again - I tried to do the right thing and support a small business - then was astonished at the $550 bill. 2 hours for a health check (fine) - I asked for that. 4 hours to rebuild 2 carburetors that were "full of crap" - except they were perfectly cleaned before they left. This was after the call where only 1 carb was not working.. I find out 2 get rebuilt. They are the simplest carbs in the world. No adjustments - the jets are all pre-sized. 4 hours? I even strained my fuel tank through a fine mesh paint strainer just to be 100% sure there was nothing in the gas when I got home to give the benefit of the doubt. Perfectly clean. Everything after the tank (tank line, fuel lines, fuel pump - all of it was 100% new) To be told the carbs were full of crap is impossible to believe - especially when the filter is built right into the pump and is brand new. It pains me to even write this.. read more

CUSTOMER SERVICE HERE IS JUST TERRIBLE. I had work done to a motor that was less than one year old and was given a bill for over $200 without any description of the amount of hours of labor. When I questioned the bill, Fred told me that I should look elsewhere for service. He didn't even wait to hear why I questioned the bill. He then had to use a calculator to try to figure out how many hours the amount worked out to be and then made up a story about why it took so long. Please check out the other reviews of these folks. I discovered the store about two weeks ago wherein I purchased 115.00 worth of parts. I Always went to West Marine as I didn't even know the store existed. On that first day I went there, it was because West Marine did not have what I needed and they said that this place may have it, which they did. Thus, the 115.00 purchase. This past Monday, I foolishly went back to the store, not realizing what I was in for. I went because my 78 year old father needed a grease gun. I had told him that the store seemed locally owned when I was there, which I am always willing to support. Prior to heading to the store, my father showed me Cheap 5 dollar inline fuel filter he had purchased on Amazon during the early covid lockdown. He asked me where along the gas line he thought he should cut into the line and install it. (Before or after the priming bulb). I had no idea so I told him to bring it with him and we could ask at the store. Big mistake! We arrive at the store and choose the grease gun, which an employee brought to the front for us while we looked around. My father then asks the woman named Mary about the fuel filter and shows her the hose. You could see the disgust on her face. Her first words were, did you purchase it here? My dad said no, and this began the problem. She said she had no idea. Walked up front and we followed. Out comes the husband. She says, they are here for free advice on a fuel filter that bought someplace else. Bear in mind I spent 115 dollars just several days prior and my dad was buying an overpriced grease gun for 35 dollars. The first words out of his mouth to my father was "free advice, you even going to buy anything in here". My father began to answer him and I began to fume. I cut my father off and told the guy we weren't buying a thing! He went ballistic. Without a mask on, he was screaming, spitting, swearing and ordered us out of his store. My father and I returned the favor and screamed back at him telling him he was a disgrace. He continued to scream and yell. His wife, now calls the police!!! The police arrive and we explain the story. The police questioned the owner who admitted he made a bad decision. Lol. Bad decision? The bad decision is purchasing anything at this store. Folks, read all the one star ratings and look at the trend. This is an angry guy who shouldn't be in business. That's exactly what bad reviews are for. To hold people accountable for their actions. It should also be noted that he was in violation of town and state guidelines by being unmasked and screaming directly in people's faces. They know what they're doing, especially with my 1969 vintage JonnyRude. Maybe best part of visits was interacting with personnel- very helpful, even to giving hints on assembling motor, even using exploded parts views to explain things- better than Haynes manuals. I have done business here on numerous occasions over the past 5 years and despite being "odd ducks" I had always found Fred and Mary quite helpful. I went in recently to purchase wire and a connectors to install marine electronics I had purchased online - Fred and Mary were both exceedingly disgruntled that I had purchased said electronics elsewhere without consulting them first to obtain pricing that Fred came out from behind the counter to get in my face and attempt to tell me off, I proceeded to leave the items I was purchasing on the counter and on my way out the door got a heartfelt "F*** YOU" from Mary. Truly taken aback by how upset the two of them were for having done business elsewhere, I can only speculate from their emotions that the business' books must be looking a little red as of late. Great local outboard engine shop. The owners are on-site and knowledgable. They do what needs to be done to service an engine. If it needs something additional, they'll discuss it with you and explain why it should be done, then it's up to you to decide. They don't try to scare you into buying additional services. The also don't try to sell you stuff you don't need. This is an "old-school shop." The mechanics are knowledgable and experienced. More shops should be like them. read more

We have purchased outboard motors, a rib inflatable, and most of our sailboat gear at B&M over 24+ years. We've had all outboards serviced at B&M. They've done excellent work at fair prices and go far beyond any other repair shops that I've used in past or in other states. When they service my outboards, they also clean the fuel tank (and line). When we purchased an outboard, they prepped the engine and provided 30min hands-on orientation plus detailed break-in procedures to follow. As a boat owner for over 40 years who does most of their own work (except outboard when I'm in NE), I know the difficulty of repairing engines that have been exposed to salt water. We have the expression, "Touch and you own it.", which in our case means that a 15 minute task can turn into hours if the part you're dealing with is frozen/corroded and/or attached to something frozen/corroded and/or is stuck behind "stuff" that needs to be removed to get to the item you need to work. And hopefully the "stuff" you need to get around is not also frozen or corroded. When it comes to these situations where extra parts need replacing or extra time to clean associated corroded parts, I have absolutely trust in Fred that usually do not have for most other mechanics (except Earnie and Bill at Midas in Plaistow, NH). Mary keeps a well supplied store and is amazing at finding difficult or scarce parts (w/o jacking the price as many of the other Boston area marine stores do). Even though I'm currently sailing in the Bahamas and Florida for the last 4 years, I still return to B&M each year for my outboard, dingy and sailboat parts.
