We have a few food allergies that also needed to be addressed, and saw that the Riverhouse catered to food allergies. We are from out of town and worked with Susan Lebrie with the menu and table arrangements, etc., via e-mail. The day of the dinner arrived, along with forty of our guests. I cannot describe how incredibly well the evening went. The food was actually better than the restaurant. The guests raved about how well it tasted, how great the service was, and the atmosphere was perfect. I highly recommend the Riverhouse for any function that you would need. Me, not so much unless I'm in need of something, but I tagged along. So glad I did! This is a cute little store with lots of things to catch the eye. Not just the obvious--print services, cards, stationery, etc.--but also things like recyclable bags and other gifty items. I walked out of there with a small size (there was a large variety of bags for different uses) Baggu reclyclable bag I can fold up and pop into my purse for use when I need it. Handy for carrying leftovers from restaurants, quick trips to CVS/Walgreens or other places where you just want a couple of things. In fact it would have been handy for my trip to Gus & Ruby! Unfortunately, their poor customer service makes working with Gus & Ruby Letterpress frustrating and disappointing. We worked with Gus & Ruby Letterpress to create an invitation suite and day-of stationery for a formal wedding in Boston. It started out great with an initial meeting in the store. We looked through samples, felt the quality of the paper, and left with exciting ideas for the invitations. Little did we know this would be our last in person meeting, and that even reaching a live person on the phone would be extremely difficult as we moved forward. After our first meeting we submitted ideas and details for the first draft of the wedding suite. Then we waited 14 business days for a first proof. The proof was completely off the mark. The designers at Gus & Ruby Letterpress did not seem to read what we had asked for. For example, one envelope liner option contained fall-colored abstract daisies for a spring formal wedding. We tried to convey our ideas as clearly as possible but the communication channel from us, to our salesperson, to the design team, played out like a game of telephone with a tin can and a string. The message did not get through. After several weeks of revisions, we eventually arrived at a beautiful invitation suite that fit our vision. If communication had been better, we would have reached the final product a lot sooner. During this whole process we never felt like we were a priority, a valued customer, and we often felt dismissed. We continued to work with Gus & Ruby Letterpress for our day-of stationery because there was not time to search out a new stationer and because their products are high-quality. However, it was frustrating to only communicate through email. Our concerns never seemed to be acknowledged by our salesperson. No human ever answered the phone at Gus & Ruby Letterpress. Our overall experience with Gus & Ruby Letterpress fell far short of what we expected from a high-end, custom stationer. I cannot recommend them.

The hotel is nice, friendly staff & it has a decent gym, could always be larger ;) Having separation between the bedroom and living space works for us, better nights sleep with our dogs. Rooms are a good size and in decent shape, the facility is showing its age a bit but that is fine. The Residence Portsmouth Downtown Waterfront is a solid Marriott Residence Inn…read more The location of this hotel (NOT to be confused with the Residence Inn at Pease International Airport, also in Portsmouth) is ideal; the hotel is close to everything in downtown Portsmouth. The Residence Portsmouth Downtown Waterfront is well maintained and immaculate. Breakfast is OK. The food is industrial grade. In my opinion, this hotel has become complacent, again, at breakfast. The standard, Residence Inn fare breakfast items are OK, but, there are no cut fruit, berries, or fruit cocktail, and no waffle iron, as is standard at many Residence Inn's. I was intrigued by this hotel's latest attempt at "value engineering" at breakfast, the cereal bowls have shrunk in size by about 30% (a staged, mathematical equation, to cause a guest to take less cereal, and to cost the hotel, less money (classic, "value engineering")). Fortunately, the Residence Portsmouth Downtown Waterfront is serving fresh, cooked daily, oatmeal, and has abandoned their previous shenanigans of serving instant oatmeal. In my opinion, this hotel is continuously nickel and diming their breakfast. I just don't get it, Marriott used to pride themselves on their food and beverage. The guest rooms are comfortable. Front Desk staff are largely apathetic. The high point of our stay was the Christmas decor and ambiance, at the hotel; the hotel goes the extra mile to decorate - - tastefully and professionally - - for the season. In summary, the Residence Portsmouth Downtown Waterfront is ideally located, clean, and safe. I am forever intrigued by this hotel's recurring efforts to maintain itself as a mediocre Residence Inn; it seems that the hotel leadership lacks the energy, money, or convictions, to excel; they are simply going through the motions, they demonstrate no commitment to, or passion to excel (traits of an Absentee Landlord, and poor manager).
