Once upon a time, when work and/or errands brought me frequently to Santa Monica, Bob's Market was a convenient destination to pick up fresh produce, fish, meat or a well crafted can't-wait-to-get-home to devour hot meal or sandwich. Today, not in this zipcode as often but Bob's Market remains a go-to for all aforementioned and now a well positioned Jyan Isaac Bread kiosk. This convenience is a real time saver as on the recently gentrified Ocean Park Boulevard, metered parking is the norm to assist in abating Santa Monica, CA's "fiscal distress". Wow what a surprise walking into this store. We were at Yoga-Urt across the street and then decided to check out the market as we needed a couple of things. This store for being a bit on the smaller side offers everything you'd need and more. They carry well known brands, hard to find brands and everything in between. It's great! Bob's Market has outdoor BBQ on the weekends. There's a small parking lot and a few picnic tables to enjoy your meal. Better yet, grab food and head to the beach. The place is always spotless and well stocked. They have everything you need. We love the service. They are fast and ever so nice. They will help you find what you need and if you are disabled they will help you with your bags to the car. We love their selection of bread. They also have wonderful seafood and good meats. They have a great selection of wine and beer. Their produce is always fresh. Their prices are fair and they have a vegetarian and vegan section. In an era when big impersonal chains dominate the landscape, indy supermarkets that have stood the test of time are rare and valuable. Bob's is one. It truly reminds me of the one my parents liked, Food Circus, back East where I grew up. We went every single Saturday, knew exactly what was where, and there were friendly faces who we could turn to with questions, to get a knowledgeable answer. Bob's has a big, open parking lot, a huge inventory of all the usual things but also a deep supply of specialties including exotic spices, ethnic foods and gourmet imported and domestic wines. I especially appreciate their baked goods. Every so often, I want to be catered to. I want to find something new and surprising, and I don't want to have to worry about where I am going to park to get it. Also, it makes me feel good to support a family store like Bob's and not just worry that I shaved the last penny off of every item on my list. Charlie, our cashier was the soul of cheer, the entire place is clean and bright. We found everything we wanted and even some things we didn't expect (like the freshly made olive bread -- see my photos). If you are anywhere near Bob's, stop in and remind yourself of what the "super" in supermarkets was supposed to stand for. read more

This friendly neighborhood store sits in Santa Monica, along Ocean Park. It is a short walk where I often have get-togethers, and I sometimes walk here to get some food from their deli. My personal favorite from here is the grilled salmon, which I usually couple with steamed corn, veggies, mashed potato, and/or potato wedges. Their chicken is pretty decent as well. The food is good quality, tasting great and coming in pretty generous portions. The workers here are always attentive in their work, and check out is quick and seamless. Other patrons are usually locals to the area, and the surrounding neighborhood is safe and calm. This is a neighborhood gem in this part of Santa Monica, I'm glad to support this place. This is a review for their weekend BBQ only. I love that they do this! I've tried almost everything on their menu and my favorite is the beef ribs. The ribs are hearty and have a good bbq sauce on them. They are quite filling and I enjoy feeling like a caveman eating them. The burger is just "okay". Their chicken is juicy and delicious, perfect for saving for the next day. Also I am a HUGE fan of their macaroni salad. I work just down the street and used to stop by this place somewhat regularly, but after my most recent experience, I will never return. I went in on my lunch break, bought a Coca-Cola and a bag of chips--spending over $5--then sat at one of their outdoor tables to eat the rest of my lunch, which I had brought from home. Despite being a paying customer, an employee told me I wasn't allowed to sit there because I had outside food. Let me be clear!!! I paid for items in their store moments before sitting at their tables and I was polite and quiet, simply trying to enjoy lunch during a busy workday. The staff's response was rude, incompetent and unprofessional. There was no courtesy, no common sense, and no customer service. This place clearly doesn't value its customers, especially locals who support them regularly. Avoid this establishment--there are plenty of better options nearby that won't treat you like a nuisance just for sitting at a table. read more

But, Bob's is special for certain items that you cannot find in your chain grocery stores. Something about independent grocery stores. The service here is excellent. We were heading home after a short visit to help the kids with the grandkids this week. After dropping off our grandson at his school we thought before heading back to Sherman Oaks we should pick up our lunch for the road. I saw as we drove by "Deli" on the side of the building, we did a quick U-turn. It was early as in 9am, but hope springs eternal the deli would be open. Walk in to a clean, organized old school style grocery store. The way I remember as a kid, where you know the employees because they've all worked there for awhile. The deli dude greeted us and was patient as we looked at all the choices. So nice and helpful, I looked at all the salads and they looked freshly made! Even that green jello looked intriguing. While my husband ordered his sandwich, I wandered and looked down some of the isles. There were some of the employees stocking, and everything was stocked so nicely. All the fruit looked beautiful, such a nice place to shop and you could see the care taken in the store. Wish I had a store like this in my neighborhood. Good find! read more

They have what you need and often stock products you can't find elsewhere. Very good wine selection. A full-service butcher/deli offering top-grade meats and deli salads with friendly employees eager to serve you and get you on your way. Most of all, this place has a heart and serves the community in so many valuable ways. Ethics and good service should always be recognized. When we lived in Sunset Park, this was our "go to" market for soo many groceries... the best meats, sausages, egg salad behind the counter and the hot food too! Everyone was always so friendly and it was the best experience always... years later, IT STILL ROCKS! From the street this market looked nothing special. We went in just to check while we have time to kill until the soccer game starts. It was Sunday . We walked into the isle direct from the entrance door guessing this must be one of small neighborhood market. We were surprised of their wine selections! I even took some photos.. Well organized. Well displayed. The whole market was super clean. By the way I checked cleanness always. Walked around a few times. Like other reviewers said it's old school style market, sometimes we are wondering how can they survive against Costco or Trader Joe's, etc. Picked the wines in cute bottles. Didn't try deli or bbq. There is a most unwelcoming gorgon of a clerk - an older (old) female with shoulder-length grey hair - a glaring harridan who is the first thing you see when you walk into Bob's Market as she glowers from her cash register and it's something that I don't actually understand. She is not only unfriendly, she makes me not want to spend my money at Bob's at all. Why they hire someone so completely wrong to be forward-facing (toward) their customer base stymies me. I have never seen a less appropriate grocery clerk. Now, don't get me wrong, we love Bob's Market. The vibe, the attitude (other than the harpy of a clerk mentioned above!!) have always been just right. Their meat counter is among the finest in this city and certainly the best meat counter in Santa Monica/Ocean Park hands down. Funnily enough, the butchers are some of the best guys we have interactions with in any store. They seem to take pride in the fact that they run such a high-caliber operation and they are eager to help with your needs and share their knowledge about their meats and fish and how to prepare them. The termagant at the cash register in the front of the store certainly could learn a lesson or three in the basics of customer service from them instead of bringing the place way down every time she is encountered. I checked it out after church service on the way back. It looks old outside, yet pretty bright and new inside surprisingly. This seems one of the faves of the locals. As a new resident here, I am trying to explore the surroundings and I happen to see this and its coupon in the mail. The food quality is actually good, the display is pleasing, and the wine selection is addiction. I browse through it, and I have seen some amazing differences here such as bean sprout can be purchase based on the weight. That is unique and good as I always have throw away half away if I buy a full bag. The only drawback is the prices are on the higher side especially for me who is trying to prepare for the upcoming inflation and possibly recession, I am watching my spending to save as much as I can for kids' college and future weddings. But Santa Monicans are not affected by it as it seems, which is good. The best part is the service. I just look at the meat for 2 seconds and 3 people ask me whether I need help, if I do, let them know right away. The service and courtesy is amazing, the best I have seen around town so far. I do wish I have better economic status to feel nothing to buy here, but at this present moment, I will just look. read more

I love this neighborhood market but today I had an unsatisfactory experience. I have lived in the neighborhood since 1996 and I periodically go to the market instead of Trader Joe's. I always use the $10 off coupon when buying $50 or more. This time my checker forgot to apply it and would not give me $10. Instead a "manager" named Gary lied and told me they do not apply the discount again but gave me "fake" money, meaning I would need to go back again to use it. This was just simply untrue as I went to the market a month ago and had the discount applied. This is just wrong and needs to be fixed. read more
