This neighborhood grocery store on Montana Ave in Santa Monica is a fine place for a freshly made sandwich or cooked items in their deli case. They've got a nice butcher section with fresh meat and seafood. There's a deli case with close to 20 items -- ribs, chicken, lasagna, mac 'n cheese, soup and more, depending on the day. They've got about a dozen salads, including three potato salads, and about as many deli meats for sandwiches. The beef stew was excellent, the lasagna, chili and meatloaf also very good. The sandwiches are solid and very reasonably priced. Two things stand out for me here: their weekend barbecue and the tamales. Someone in their kitchen makes delicious Oaxacan tamales (which are not always available). These tamales are chock full of chicken mole -- perhaps the highest ratio of filling to masa that I've had -- and are neatly wrapped in banana leaves. The burritos are similarly pre-made and stuffed to the gills with the protein of the day. As for the weekend barbecue, every Saturday and Sunday morning they grill select meats from the deli (prime steaks, tri tip, chicken, etc) which you can buy throughout the day at the deli. The Farms also has fresh vegetables, premade salads and all the other items you'd expect from a neighborhood grocery store. Service is super friendly, and there's free parking in back. I've been a local here since I was in diapers ('91) and it's forever my favorite market. Jeff and Sean are my honorary uncles and it always feels like home when I stop by. You'll often see a local kid behind the cash register or stocking shelves because The Farms makes it a point to employ the local kids to show them the business ropes. The deli is delicious (I stand firm that the sandwiches are better than Bay Cities) and so are the fresh fruits and veggies that actually look and taste like normal, non-GMO, farm fresh produce. There's a great selection of wine, beer, etc., plus shelves always stocked with pretty much anything anyone could need in a quick, whether it's rice, paper towels, toothpaste, cheese or a stack of ribs. You can even pick up a plant or two, specifically chosen by Jeff! Between BBQ Sundays and themed holiday decor and a game always playing on the tv with music in the background, it's a neighborhood gem. read more

This review is for the deli only. I went in here to buy a special supplement. I decided to go to the deli and see what they had and I was surprised to see all these beautiful looking premade burritos at a hot bar counter. I told the deli man that I've never been here before, and I have a few questions. He had me wait while he was on phone what seemed way too long. His attitude towards me came off arrogant and curt. I politely requested a small side of Salsa for his $12. Burrito. He told me they don't give out salsa but I can buy a pint of salsa for $8.00! WTF?? What Mexican food establishment in all of LA doesn't give out salsa for a taco or burrito? the answer --No one! FYI, the tortilla tasted crusty and hard from sitting in the hot bar for too long so it wasn't good. Too bad bc I was looking forward to being a regular customer. Adios amigo! read more

A years ago, walk-to when I lived close by for the freshest of veggies and meats or the recipes' missing ingredient, it is good to know this neighborhood market is still going strong. Lunch was my driving factor after unsuccessfully foraging for parking further west. Find plenty of free spaces on Montana Avenue (be aware of street cleaning days though), as well as, in the lot behind The Farms. Made fresh, to order, a popular, name brand smoked turkey on sourdough with everything, big enough to share, only $6.95 was up before I had time to snag bottled water. Enjoyed half at a quiet sidewalk table along with other neighbors in the know, wrapped the rest for dinner. All my lunchtimes should be this easy, this peaceful! read more

"A cute little neighborhood market" My friend told me about this market only few blocks away from where I live in Santa Monica. I decided to stop by the other day, I walked in looking lost, so the meat guy started talking to me. I told him this is my first time coming here, and he explained the difference between meats, I'm very health conscious so I'm glad they have Organic and natural chicken. They were all friendly, they told me about the BBQ Sunday. It's Sunday today, and I think the meat guy's name is Alex, he called me reminded me about the BBQ, so I dragged myself out of the bed with my hang over head, I made it over there, he let me taste meats, they were all so good and smokey! We've gone to The Farms for almost 10 years now? We live down the street and know and adore everyone there. The staff has stayed pretty much the same that whole time which is saying something! Our entire family knows almost everyone. The owner Sean is a neighborhood legend - he gives our kids (age 3 and 5) pennies, lollipops and the occasional sample box of Popsicles (!). I've seen him be super generous to regular customers over and over. And we love Jeff, Juan, Jimmy and the whole team. They host neighborhood BBQs, occasional music and are pretty much the go-to spot for anyone with a dog. (They used to have free dog bones : ) Also - ask Sean about wine picks, he knows a ton and can select something for parties/host gifts within your budget. We love The Farms! read more

They treat neighborhood customers like trash. Every Sunday they have an obnoxious band playing the same out of tune, excessively LOUD music, blocking the sidewalk from 1:00 - 5:00 PM. So much for "quiet enjoyment". It's a residential neighborhood but no consideration or awareness is given to shoppers or residents. The merch is OK although watch the date on milk. The Farms is everyone's idea of the 'local grocery store'. It's a "mom & pop" organization but with great vegetables, a fabulous meat market, and shelves that seem to house an amazing number of items not available at the local Ralphs or Vons. We run into neighbors and long-lost friends at The Farms, we ask if they have an item and Shawn orders it for us, Juan in the meat market texts when they have some spectacularly good steaks, and if I go in on a whim without my wallet, they know me and trust that I'll make good on my debt. Lol you try to support local businesses but they dont let you. I decided to stop here and buy a water bottle and a snack. Having never been here,I thought it was a pretty cool store on the inside. I get to the register and it's a $10 minimum to pay with card. In 2018. I wouldn't mind paying a 50 cent fee or something along that line to allow me to pay with a card. I get it, merchants charge businesses when we use cards. But to demand such a high minimum is ludicrous. Yeah, I guess I'll just stick to chains where they dont have a minimum. read more

We love the Farms! My son, Neal who has severe autism and has been going to The Farms since he was three years old. He referred to it then as "The Little Store." All of the staff are kind, loving and supportive - carrying groceries for me when my son was having a difficult time, offering help with my son and just being great neighbors. The owner, Sean, sets the tone. When my son turned 18, Sean gave Neal his first job, where he has worked for several years. This place is a gem. it's been in the neighborhood way before montana became what it is.. my parents told me montana used to have no stores just a laundry mat and this little grocery store (im talking 30+ years ago). I think it's family run and the same guy works behind the register who was there when i went is a kid. All the guys who work in the deli section are also extremely friendly. This is such a great neighborhood place with all the basic groceries you could possibly need plus a great deli, wine selection, drug store items like cleaning products and first aid. The sandwiches here are awesome and lovingly made and all the bbq and hot bar items are yummy! Mainly old school comfort food items like meatloaf and bbq chicken and lasagna. But then they also do fun seasonal holiday stuff like corned beef and cabbage! The staff has been very friendly to me every time I've gone in and you can tell you're supporting a lot of neighborhood workers when you're there. Produce and meats always fresh! I stopped by The Farms to pick up a few pounds of tenderloin that a friend had ordered. I proceeded to the butcher counter and waited to get the attention of a member of the staff. I told them that I was there to pick up an order for ******. This did not ring a bell, and the gentleman asked me what the order was. I stated that it was beef tenderloin. He rolled his eyes, and said, "it's right in front of you." This was a jerk move considering the order was not labeled. I don't find condescension interesting or attractive...especially when I am paying well above market rate for a product that I could pick up for 30% less about a mile away. There are better butchers with better attitudes throughout the area. Paying a premium for jackass service is not on my agenda. read more

The farms is good. I give it an extra star because I love to sit inside. I love the atmosphere and the bustle of people. Feels alive. The market they have is really well stocked ! More a place for me to look around than buy though. The food itself, the mushroom fritata was delicious. The portion for me was perfect! But I can imagine for most people they would be unsatisfied. My friend ordered the quinoa salad and it was baby sized. She was hungry after so we went over to Sweet Rose to grab ice cream :) read more
