I am new to Body and Brain. I wanted to try each of the classes, before I submitted a review. Master Maki and Master Ko have an incredible program, which makes each participant welcome. The atmosphere easily sets one at ease. Although somewhat of a clumsy participant myself right now, I feel nothing less than 100% accepted in each class. And speaking of the first class, the first nights' sleep after taking a class? Like none I'd had in a very LONG time - wonderful. Over 60 (the new 40), I am bound and determined to stay moving just the way I feel ( 40?). With Master Maki and Master Ko, I believe I am continuing on the right track! read more

It is over a year since writing the above review and I am sad to report I have very different feelings about Body & Brain. In the beginning, as indicated in the above review, the gentle stretching was very healing for my SI joint injury. On a daily basis I gave very vocal positive feedback to the center owner and to the other classmates. From the very start I had heard about their all important workshop "Finding True Self," and made plans to attend one scheduled for December of 2023. As I recall, the cost was about $400 for the one day workshop. There was some lecture material, but most of that was information I had gleaned from my master's in counseling program at the university. The leader does not speak the best English, so close attention is needed to be certain everything is understood. Before long the group -- 4 participants, along with about 12 to 16 facilitators and helpers were involved in what I can only describe as primal screaming. I don't know the words they were screaming, but the decibel level was so high that I had piercing pains in my left ear. Finally, the screaming stopped and we were asked how we were feeling. I very directly and emphatically told the entire assembly that the noise level in the room was damaging to human hearing. As a certificated health teacher I well-know about the damage of loud noises. I was then given a pair of flimsy, and, frankly, worthless earplugs. Turns out there would be several more screaming sessions. I had very good earplugs at home but had not been advised to bring them. Also, I had accepted a ride that day so did not have my car with me. My family were all traveling. I could have, and should have, called an Uber to leave but I knew that my leaving would be taken as an insult. I toughed it out. Then, at the very end we were involved in some kind of community hugging, that held no value to me because the entire day had been such a disappointment. We were each "awarded" a single rose at the end. I was immediately overcome with guilt because I did not believe I had done anything to earn any kind of an award. My ears rang with tinnitus for many weeks after this nightmare. There was a follow-up session conducted online, but I was the only one who attended. Then there was an in-person follow-up session where other participants shared that the entire workshop experience had been very positive for them. I was direct in sharing that I did not have a positive experience. I saw no benefit for myself or for Body & Brain for me to lie about it. Had I known about the screaming -- probably five or six times throughout the day -- I would never have agreed to participate and, certainly, would not have paid money to participate. Even after I told the group that the decibel level was so loud that it was damaging to human hearing, none of the facilitators made any effort to reduce the noise level. During at least one of the screaming sessions I looked up and saw the leader screaming into a microphone, so loudly that his head was shaking back and forth. This could not have been therapeutic for him or anyone else in the room. Body & Brain offers many retreats and workshops that take place in Arizona and New Zealand (I believe) and this Finding True Self workshop is required before anyone is permitted to participate in these other, far more expensive workshops. In June 2023 the center I was attempting to renew my 3-month membership and the owner kept pressuring me to renew for the coming year. Well I am a senior citizen, over the age of 80, and I don't usually plan that far in advance. But her high pressure sales tactics were so persistent that I finally agreed. Then in January of this year I began to have some health issues and was not able to attend on a regular basis. After missing a few days, I ended up not attending at all. Then, last week, the end of June I was feeling much better one morning and decided to attend the 9:30 class. After the class the center owner approached me rudely to tell me that she had found me so negative for the entire year I had attended that she did not want to work with me anymore. She seemed to forget the very positive review (above) that I had written last year, as well as all the oral compliments I had given about the help the gentle stretching had afforded me. I left with the intention of never returning. Now that a week has passed I feel I must write a follow-up that is completely honest. There are accusations that Body & Brain is a cult, and after my experience, I am inclined to agree. I suspect the issue in my case was that I was very vocal about not liking a workshop that I was expected to like, and, indeed, was required to like. Under no circumstances would I recommend Body & Brain to anyone. There are community health clubs that offer all levels of yoga, and often medical insurance pays for the cost of participation. In addition, there are private yoga establishments with very competitive prices for participation. read more

I have been doing Body & Brain yoga with Maki for 3 years, on average 2-3 times a week now. I love that I am doing something that benefits my brain while stretching my body. The exercises are uniquely designed and I find that they create a calmness in my brain and health in my body. I love this local business! read more

A few months ago I decided that adding Tai Chi/Yoga to my healing journey (cancer patient) would be beneficial. I am SO happy that I did. Not only do I love the classes at Body & Brain Everett, the instructors (Masters Ko & Maki) are wonderful, and the community is welcoming. The workouts, especially tapping, have helped alleviate my relentless asthma. Overall, my health is greatly improved, my energy increased, and my overall sense of well-being enhanced. Don't deserve one star. I joined to improve my strength and flexibility after an injury. I also take medication for PTSD. During a session I experienced a panic attack. I walked to my purse to get medication and was called out by the owner/instructor asking what I was doing. I said I was taking some medication and in front of the whole class she, Maki, asked what I was taking and what for. I was discouraged from taking my medicine and was taken aback by this public "outing" and became very embarrassed as everyone paused yoga to listen. She knew I was suffering from PTSD and it was very intrusive/inappropriate. I paid close to 800$ for membership, but I haven't been back since. Go to the Y. Not here. read more

Classes are great. Each class offers something different. It's not just your physical body but your brain as well.

Body and Brain Yoga is for those who want to make a difference for living healthier. I have become more mindful about how to treat my body better, clear my mind so I am not so stressed, and be present to my emotional state and change it for the better. Last summer, after sustaining injuries in a car accident the year before, I felt the need for a non-high impact form of exercise. I had been thinking of taking yoga or Tai Chi, so when I noticed a new center on the corner of Rucker and Hewitt in Everett, I stopped inside. It has proved to be one of the best decisions I have ever made. I was warmly met by Center Manager Maki Perry. I immediately felt at ease in her presence. A slim and petite woman, I was soon to learn that Maki houses great strength, humor, dedication and experience. She explained what programs and classes the Body Brain Yoga and Tai Chi Center of Everett offers. We then set up an appointment to assess the condition of my post middle-age body. Upon evaluation I was surprised to find out that I am not the wreak I thought I was and that there was, in fact, hope for progress and improvement. I decided to try a class and see what I might be getting myself into. I was joined in class that day by a number of men and women of various shapes, ages and sizes who were relaxed, in good humor and obviously happy to be there and to see each other. Maki conducted the class at a humane pace (no hot yoga here!) and was happy to take a moment to answer any questions I as a newbie had. Occasional jokes were cracked, mostly regarding what we were asking our bodies to do. The yoga was followed by a few minutes of meditation during which Maki read a beautiful excerpt from Sedona by Dahn Yoga founder, Ilchi Lee. Next, I tried the Tai Chi class which was definitely more of a challenge for me but proved to be just as much fun. As an added bonus, at the end of all the classes, we take a few minutes to chat and sip delicious,freshly made ginger tea. I have been attending Maki's yoga and Tai Chi classes ever since. I have developed a real fondness for all the people who attend. I miss being there during my work week and always feel happy and lucky to be there with everyone. My breathing has improved, I am more centered emotionally and my overall strength and flexibility has greatly improved. I wholeheartedly recommend that you check out Maki and the Body Brain Yoga and Tai Chi Center in Everett. It may prove to be one of the best decisions you'll ever make too. I have done various types of yoga over the years from Hatha to Bikram, but what I experienced in Maki's Tuesday evening class was enlightening and definitely took me to a different mental level. We started off doing "intestinal exercises." They were so easy, yet so hard I thought there was no way I would make it thought the rest of the class. (I was actually sore in that area the next day!!!) The connection of mind and body (energy flow) is one I had never felt before. I joined Body & Brain Yoga in mid-February with the hope of healing for a body that at 55 felt like it was 70. As soon as I met the owner/operator (Maki) I knew that I stepped through the right doors. It was the best decision I could make for myself and my goal of living healthy and happy through my senior years. The program offered through Body & Brain is low impact cardio, focused stretching and breathing combined with meditation. Maki does an excellent job of introducing and acclimating new participants into the program. I am not big on social situations and do not appreciate big crowds and fanfare. The atmosphere at Body & Brain is one of inclusiveness and individuality; if you are not at the level of the other participants you do not feel out of place. Maki is able to connect with each of her program participants to make them feel like she is in tune with who they are and what would benefit them most. She is encouraging and highly supportive. So, I have been with the Body & Brain program for nearly 3 months and am so excited about how my life has been transformed. I still have a long way to go, but I can move my body in ways that I could not imagine and I can do so without pain. I feel very comfortable discussing my progress with Maki and know that she is capable of helping me set strategies for further growth. I cannot recommend Maki or Body & Brain any higher -- if I could rate her a 10, I would. read more

I came in expecting a standard yoga class like you would experience at a gym. I found this to be more focused on energy work, breathing, motion, and opening the chakras. I've never experienced anything like this. It was life changing. I can see now, how the body houses the mind, heart, and spirit--that attention to these are not separate from my physical body. It has built balance, inner-power, wisdom, and compassion in to my being. I recommend people try it with zero expectations and just see how it goes. I had a great experience. Not everyone connects with it. There's a lot of cool books and other information around it. People should definitely walk in, look around and ask questions. read more

I've been attending both Tai Chi and Yoga classes here for 3 months. The instructors lead a positive, encouraging class that works for whatever level you are able to do. It's also so much more then just the exercise. There is always a form of meditation included and a tea session as part of every class. I highly recommend this for people of any age and ability. read more

I'm so glad I found this place! I've been going for about 2 months, 2-3 times a week after work and there's a huge difference between how I feel when I get there and how I feel after class; I go from stressed and exhausted to relaxed, calm, focused and energized. I feel restored to myself and it feels great. My body is stronger, and the feeling of being focused stays longer and longer between classes. I love this place... it's become like a second home. The other members are like family, and Maki is a warm and caring "mom" to us all. I love all the meditation and mindfulness teaching that we get along with our exercise. This is the exact opposite experience of most gyms, where you exercise while watching TV or zoning out. I have been a member for almost 3 months now and when I started going, I would have these hot flashes-I was like "am I going through the change already??". I was constantly feeling stressed out, overwhelmed, extremely inflexible and just overall crummy. I started going consistently for awhile and then a series of events occurred and I ended up missing about 2 weeks of classes. I found myself feeling stressed out, overwhelmed, inflexible and those pesky hot flashes returned. I didn't realize until I was unable to go just how much Maki's class had been helping me! She is wonderful and I always leave class feeling relaxed and HAPPY! During the time I was going consistently, my mood improved, I didn't find myself getting all stressed out and the hot flashes stopped! I highly recommend Body & Brain! read more

When I walked in the door, I knew I was in the right place. The atmosphere is inviting and has great energy. Maki encourages you to just start and do your best. After a few months the aches and pains I brought with me started to leave, my energy improved tremendously and my outlook on life was much brighter. After a few more months, I was able to shed some unwanted pounds and the workouts became much easier. The other members are delightful and welcoming. I have worked out with Maki's body and brain yoga for three years. The style of yoga, tai chi and stretching have helped me relax and condition myself as well as open myself up to other theories and techniques of Asian exercise and medicine. Maki's healing sessions are amazing and guaranteed to offer relief from sore muscles and joints. Everything I have done within the context of this training I have learned something about myself and my body. This is not a grind it out work out but a slow progressive build up of strength, endurance, balance and energy. After every session you feel stronger more balanced and less stressed. I have taken several yoga classes in the past, but none have been half as effective as the classes I have been taking at Body&Brain for the past 6 months. The instructor Maki genuinely cares about each member and is helping people from all walks of life and all body types. Nobody would feel out of place here. These classes have gotten me through some stressful times, and I feel healthier and sleep better. There is definetly a reason it is called body AND brain! Maki offers several classes during the week, and the monthly price includes unlimited classes. The Body&Brain centers also offer extended training and workshops; I have not attended one, but I may do so in the future. I have never felt pressured to sign up for one; there is just a general announcement and sign up sheets are posted at the back of the room for anyone that is interested. Overall I would highly recommend this to anyone that is dealing with a lot of stress in their lives (so...everyone pretty much) and anyone wanting to improve themselves physically, mentally, and/or emotionally. I love the unique addition of intestinal exercises (sounds a little icky but it is actually core exercise/ab contractions), guided meditation, and fresh ginger tea at the conclusion of each class. My core has definetly gotten stronger after coming here, and even after a very long day in front of a computer at work, I don't get headaches anymore. Maki eliminated my need to take headache medication just to get through the day, and for that I am eternally grateful! read more

I walked into the Everett Body and Brain Center last December with lower back muscle tightness and little inspiration about what I wanted to do in life. Since being a member my back stiffness still pops up from time to time but I have learned how to self correct my condition with the stretches we learn in class. Also my outlook on life has completely changed. I have found inspiration to follow my dream in life and people even say I smile more. I have noticed I am also able to express myself verbally and emotionally with more ease than before this program. Body and Brain Everett and Dahn Yoga gave me direction in life and the confidence to achieve my goals. I'll forever be grateful to Master Maki and everyone at the Everett Center for their continued support. This program is top quality and worth the time and effort spent on it. Going into the center with a clear goal of what you want to achieve and putting your 100% effort into achieving that goal will make your membership worthwhile.
