I have been thinking about getting a tattoo for a long time...since college. The fact that Im a chicken paired with my mother's dislike of body art...i just never got around to it. My husband and i decided to get tattoos together a few months ago and i made the arbitrary date of my birthday. A friend of his recommended a No Ka Oi (actually the sister establishment to this one, further up the street) and that's where we went. We didn't have an appointment and the wait was going to be a while so the lady told us to come to this place and called her friend ahead and told us the price. At this place it was quick, clean and easy; we were there for less than an hour. (I am not going to lie and say it was painless but that's more a characteristics of me than the artist.) He brainstormed with us (in hindsight, we were a couple of confused airheads on the brink of chickening out...or maybe that was just me and my hubby was fine). He also drew some quick mockups for us which we immediately loved and explained the process thoroughly (i believed him when he said the second pass and the shading would hurt less...it absolutely did not hurt less but I don't hold that against him.) My only gripe was the lack of privacy. We were in the same space as another guy getting a pretty elaborate chest tattoo from another artist. I mean, what if i needed to scream, or burst out into tears? I would have had an audience. I've been to tattoo parlors for piercings before that had some private rooms. I survived this tattoo. What was meant to be a fun night getting matching tats with my best friend, unfortunately turned out to be a horrible experience. Our artist was extremely impatient, passive, and unprofessional. The artist did not bother to build any rapport. He told me that the tattoo he did on me was "ruined" because I moved during it and that it was all my fault. He said this as he was doing my tattoo. My friend and I felt extremely uncomfortable and were shocked at how terrible the whole experience was. I originally went to No Ka Oi Tiki Tattoo but was sent to their partner shop - it was a great experience at No Ka Oi Tiki Tattoo when I got a previous tattoo there but this particular artist at Body Graphics was hands down the worst experience I have had with customer service. read more

Tatiyana did three of my tattoos at once. I found her IG page and I was impressed. I don't have IG so l figured I'd do this. As for the experience, it was what I expected. I have ten tattoos of various sizes. But We listened to Rammstein the entire time and it was freaking great. She was professional and was respectful even though I think there may have been a misunderstanding (I came in with an image from Pinterest...whoops) at first but I totally understand why and how that could be an issue for artists, so that's on me if anything and I totally respect her for calling it out immediately. As for price, I don't know if it was fair or not. She quoted me, I was cool with the price and we went through with it since she drew up two tattoos that had to be redesigned and designed from scratch. I got what I paid for which were great tattoos that lands me compliments from strangers. Would recommend her to anyone. read more

A few people here weren't too thrilled about Body Graphics but my husband and I just got ours done this week on the South Street location and I didn't get the 'holier than thou' vibe at all. We chose the 6th & South location mainly because at the time 4th Street was mobbed with a bunch of kids getting initiated into the world of tattooing. It was a Saturday, so we didn't really expect otherwise. The artwork on display on South is actually completely different than the one on 4th Street and the artists were really chill and down to earth. Being the Battlestar Galactica geeks we are, my husband brought a copy of the comic into Body Graphics and the artist was easily able to replicate the phoenix he had wanted. For South Street the $100 dropped on the forearm is nothing to complain about and the $120 on the back of my leg was worth the hour it took to draw up and drill into my body. [Mine was was a little more detailed than my husband's]. The artists seem to give out the rude attitude when the idiots roll in, but once they realize that you're serious and respect them they're pretty cool. Like I said, I can't really comment on the 4th Street one since I never had anything done there, but when going to South Street be serious enough to make an appointment. Don't just walk in and expect to be the center of attention and make sure you have your shit with you if you want something custom. Also check out No Ka's portfolio's on 4th Street before making a commitment to one shop. They're all the same owner and the artists sometimes rotate, but No Ka probably has the best selection of Eastern-inspired work and authentic tribal styles. read more

One of the best tattoos I've gotten. Staff was friendly but had the perfect stern attitude needed when the wrong people come through the door. Prices were competitive. As for the previous comments about them being "rude" and "uninterested"... like you said, you were trying to get pre-drawn work done. Don't forget they are called tattoo ARTISTS for a reason. I got my sixth tattoo two days ago by Carla Hopkins. She is, without question, the best tattoo artist I've ever had. My five previous tattoos were done by five different artists. I won't be looking for other artists anymore. Carla was extremely professional from the very first email I sent her with my design, and very honest when I asked her about touching up an extremely small word that was part of another tattoo. She answered all my questions promptly and made me feel comfortable right away. Carla was extremely kind and welcoming from the moment I arrived in the shop. She made some slight changes to my original design so that it would look good as a tattoo. I love all the changes. She placed the tattoo transfer several times to make sure I was 100% happy with the placement, and told me to look in a mirror to see how it would look. These may seem like small details, but I genuinely appreciated them. None of the other tattoo artists I've gone to have done this before. The tattoo process was great, very meditative, and I thoroughly enjoyed speaking to Carla. In the end, she charged me less than she quoted me because of the position of the tattoo. I would have happily paid the original price because I am that happy with this tattoo. As far as I'm concerned, I've found my tattoo artist for life. I'm planning to leave Philly soon, but when I come back to visit family, I'll go back to Carla for my tattoos. I highly, highly, HIGHLY recommend her!!!! read more

My 22 year old brother passed away tragically in 2002. He had several tattoos, but until his passing, nothing inspired me enough to ever get one. It took me about 7 years to come up with a theme... and being that I have zero artistic skills, I only had a mental image. I called in advance to see if they had time to talk about my 'vision' and was told to come to the shop. Once I got there and felt comfortable, largely because of the cleanliness of the shop, I described what images and themes I wanted to include... Clay got his sketch pad out and spent 15 minutes on a very rough draft. I liked where he was going with it, but, was not necessarily 'in love', if you know what i mean. He told me to come back a week later to see a new draft and ok any changes... this is when I got to see Clay's creativity and attention to detail on display and I really started getting psyched!... we made a few changes and I was ok'd to come back in 2 days. Friday came... Clay said it would probably take 3-4 hours and it absolutely took up every minute of that estimate. But, when he was finished, I had the most amazing piece of art work and a testimonial to my brother that will inspire me for a lifetime. I ended up with a 3/4 sleeve, on my upper shoulder. It cost $450 and some may say that is expensive... but, getting my first and probably only tattoo, in tribute to my brother, I did not think cost was much of an issue. I wanted a clean place with a good reputation and an artist who could bring my vision to reality with a little hype! I got that and more from Clay and Body Graphics. If you want to see the tattoo, email me and I will send a pic of the tat as evidence of how good they are... BTW... I read a couple of reviews that said the artists can be rude or stand-offish. I absolutely disagree... if you go in there as a serious customer and you are not acting like a jerk, you will be greeted graciously and asked politely if you need help. I was surprised to read comments about how uninterested the staff was. They have always been very courteous to my friends and I, but we don't go in tattoo shops willy-nilly... we always have a plan to actually get a tattoo and aren't jackasses. My friend did have a bad experience at No Ka Oi when she wanted to get work done on her chestpiece. The artist didn't like her ideas and kept suggesting (borderline pressuring) her into a different theme. Unsatisfied but undeterred, we walked down to the South St store and whatever guy was there totally hooked her up. That being said, we've never had an issue with No Ka Oi since. I went and got my first tattoo there, and it looks exactly how I imagined it. The artist, Caroline, is amazing. I waited around for like an hour because I didn't have an appointment, and everyone there was really friendly. Both stores are clean, which is the most important thing. They do charge high prices, but that's pretty typical of South St. They have a chart that determines minimum price based on location on the body, so you can always look at that first. read more

My girlfriend and I have had nothing but great experiences at Body Graphics, we both go to the same artist and every piece he did on us turned out great. I'd consider the tat he did on my hip to be the best tattoo I have gotten to date. It healed nicely and perfectly, he was very friendly and helped me out with the perfect tips for taking care of it. He was great and helped me with exactly what I wanted. My hip tat is fairly large and ran me $120, I'd consider it definitely a fair price and definitely worth how well it turned out. Tonight I got my fifth tattoo. This was my third time at Body Graphics. Tonight was my fourth tattoo by Andrew Johnson Lally. My partner and I had our tattoos back to back this evening. Body Graphics is a small tattoo shop located around a couple other shops. I love this little shop. The shop is spotless, it's clean, you feel good about getting a tattoo in this shop. If you are looking for an attentive, SUPER friendly, talented tattoo artist, call and ask for Andrew. He has done some Sailor Jerry work for me, song lyrics, in an old script font, it's awesome! Tonight's tattoo was small and quick. Andrews work is consistently well done, I get compliments on a very visible piece on my forearm all the time. Andrew is professional, reasonable, and will be an artist you stick with. I look forward to visiting Body Graphics again, sooner than later. read more

I'm new to the world of tattoos and went to Body Graphics for the first time ever this past summer to have a small piece done inside my left ankle. I sheepishly admit that I was pretty nervous since I wasn't sure how to go about the whole affair. Luckily, Andrew was working and made me feel completely at ease. We joked over my wanting a sheep tattoo and he drew up a couple of sketches before I settled on my favorite. He didn't gouge me on the price either and was completely supportive of my being a newbie to the whole tattoo process. He was extremely professional and fastidious about cleanliness and such. He was thorough in his explanation of caring for my newest piece of artwork and gave me his card in case I had any problems. There was no pretentious vibe from this guy and we had a good chuckle over the adorable sheep that now sits above my ankle. I'm planning to go back to get more work done and will definitely give an update then. Hate to leave bad reviews but damn, I had a terrible experience here. I went in on a whim with three of my friends (all of us have several tattoos) and we each wanted a small heart tattoo. When we told the woman at the desk what we wanted she rolled her eyes as if we were insulting her artistic abilities- I understand that we weren't asking for anything that would be exciting for her but when you're asking $100 for each one (and there are no other customers in the store) how are you going to act like that?! We really wanted them since we all live in different cities and rarely get to see each other so we paid up, got our tattoos and left. Unfortunately, about a week later, one of my friend's tattoo was HALF gone, and the three others' lines were tapered. Luckily, mine is only messed up if you look closely but all three of my friends will have to get their's fixed. Also, this was my 4th tattoo and by far the smallest and simplest so just overall really disappointed by this place :( read more

How do I start.... I really didn't want to write a bad review because I did honestly enjoy my experience and the artist Jen. However, the tattoo not so much. Let me preface with I have several small tattoos and with the exception of one poorly done tattoo, I have had a good experience with tattoos in general. When I went into the shop, I was a bit apprehensive about getting another tat in my favorite color red. I prefer my tat's to be red in outline and colored the same. I asked was my artist knowledgable about color and outlining in color on darker skin tones and the only reservation expressed was for the pigment to show, the tat would have to be bigger and could fade over time. I was ok with a bigger tat and the risk of it fading over time. Therefore, my worries were put to rest. What I didn't expect was the end result. The tattoo is two parts (Roman numerals) the first set came out as desired. The second set all the numerals are raised (scar tissue) and the color resembles more of a pinkish hue versus red. I followed all proper care procedures, limited sun exposure etc. so the end results are baffling to say the least. It's unfortunate because IT'S PERMANENT as far as the scarring is concerned. It is also unfortunate because I was visiting from out of town so can't go back to the artist to at least look at it. At this point I honestly don't know what to do...I can't decide what bothers me most, the scar tissue or the fact that half the tat is red while the other half is pink.... read more

I got my first tattoo this week and all I can say is it was a perfect experience. Bobby Trefz is a Superstar Artist and I would recommend him to anyone. I had a wild Idea of a Tattoo and no way of giving him any reference to what I wanted and he reached into my brain and pulled out the perfect image. It took 5 hours to get the job done and he made every effort to make sure I was as comfortable as possible. The Shop was clean and the other artist who was there working even made me feel like I was in the right place. While I was getting my Tat done customers came in and Bobby would talk to them about what they wanted and even sent people to artists at other shops who would fit their designs better. All I can say is that I will make sure to come back to this shop before I get my next tattoo done. read more

I enjoy my tattoo but my experience was not good. When I went it to ask about availability and pricing they said that it was $100 deposit and depending on size and detail of tattoo it could be anywhere from $20 to $100 on top of that. I was ok with this since I knew my tattoo was only numbers and would be only 2 inches wide. Didn't expect it to be anymore than the $100 deposit. The tattoo took 10 minutes and after I was finished Agent said it would be another $100 that I owed!!! $200 for a ten minute tattoo is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. Such a rip off, which is a bummer because I enjoy the tattoo but will definitely not be returning to this shop!!! read more
