Here goes. I agree that John looks like an amazing artist however my booking experience with them has been a nightmare. I booked a 4 hours tatoo based on reviews and it's true that I had to postpone several times. However, I always had a very valid reason to do so. The first time I had a sore throat, they actually demand that you do NOT come on sick. The second time, I had a job interview. Then my mum passed away in France and, being the last living family member, I obviously had to go there to arrange for her funeral and everything else. Well, they cancelled my appointment without even noticing me about it. It turned out I was unable to go because of the Covid situation in France but my spot had already been given to someone else. When I asked if I could make another appointment, they just blew me off! Unbelievable!!! read more

I have been tattooed in 5 different shops in Philadelphia and Frequency is by far the best shop I've been to. It's a large, clean and nicely decorated space. The restroom is clean. The artists are friendly and are happy to answer questions and alleviate any concerns I have. And most importantly, they make great tattoos. These people know what they're doing. Anna did a cover up of an ex-bf name and some black tribal stuff with some pretty purple roses and it looks great! It's impossible to see the tribal under there at all, as was confirmed at a recent doctor's appointment ha ha. I can't post a photo because it's on my butt. John has done some neo-traditional work that I'm complimented on regularly. I recommend this shop to everyone. You won't be disappointed. read more

I got my ears pierced here and would recommend it! There is a cool vibe and everyone is friendly. My ears are healing nicely and the ear piercer was friendly and funny. Making an appointment was easy, I called and my friends and I were able to go that day. The only reason I give it 4/5 stars is because it was kind of pricey, but perhaps I just don't know how much piercings cost these days. I've had a few tattoos done here at Frequency, and I simply won't go anywhere else. The shop is immaculate, the staff is SO talented, and they and they really put you at ease. If you have to be verrrrrrry close to someone for hours on end as they get up close and personal with random body parts, it should definitely be someone you trust and are comfy with. John Howie (the owner) is Jedi Master of fine-line work. He's absolutely unreal. I had my parents' handwriting written on my wrists and they are absolutely flawless. My boyfriend had some Jim Flora jazz album cover characters done on his arm, and John designed additional characters that perfectly matched the style. He's just the best. Anna is also absolutely wonderful. I met her when she was an apprentice here, and now she's a full-timer and such a fabulous asset to the shop. A meticulous artist, friendly, professional, and HOLY CRAP what an eye. If you need a tattoo, come here. Reasonable prices, honest work, and a friendly vibe. We won't come anywhere else. read more

I truly don't know if I can find words descriptive enough for this amazing shop and the amazing artists here, especially Anna. Every second I spent in contact with Anna and the shop was a positive experience. Anna listened to my idea, created an absolute masterpiece to suit my vision, and I came away with a tattoo that brought tears to my eyes, it was so perfect. The quality of the artistry here is not the only 5-star aspect-- so is the cleanliness, professionalism, and the prices are more than reasonable. Honestly. Getting a tattoo with Justin Turkus at Frequency was the best tattoo experience that I've ever had (and it was my 11th tattoo overall). From the vibe of the shop, to the care and attention given to my design, to the amazing (like AMAZING) and meticulous work done by Justin while tattooing me--I cannot recommend this place enough. I drove 5 hours each way for to get tattooed by Justin and I'd do it again in a heartbeat (and hopefully will in the future!!). Essentially forced my mother-in-law to finally get the tattoo she always wanted. 62 years old getting her first tattoo coerced by none other then her dastardly son-in-law. I'm very proud of that. Bought her a gift certificate for Christmas so there was no backing out. The tattoo artist did a very good job and it was a really seamless process. The workers in this place are absolutely amazing! I came for a touch up on my ankle tattoo, which they did a great job on. I'm scared of needles so I got the feeling I was going to pass out when I was watching the touch up being done. Instantly John the tattoo artist stopped, got me some water, a cold compress for my head and made sure I was okay. Him and his coworkers really make you feel welcome and safe. To echo what many of the previous reviews said - if you want a first class tattoo experience, this is the place to go. I live over an hour away, but gladly made the drive based on information from a good friend (as well as seeing the tattoos he's gotten here). I worked with Justin Turkus - who was extremely patient, professional and incredibly talented. He emailed me some ideas and listened to all suggestions I requested. I was asking for a somewhat challenging cover up, and can't say enough about how well it turned out. I was also really pleased with the price, which was very fair for the amount of time it took. The shop itself is immaculate. Street parking was not an issue (which shocked me, considering it's Philly). Although I haven't had work done with any of the other artists there, I was looking through their previous work (pictures in the waiting area), and they are all extremely talented. I haven't been in many other shops so difficult to offer comparisons - but I can definitely say that this was an extremely positive experience, and I will absolutely be going back for my next tattoo (yes, they are addictive!!). read more

Came here today for my first tattoo as a walk in. They accommodated me and made me as comfortable as possible. The price was SUPER reasonable and the shop was amazing. Dave did my tattoo and not only worked with me on the design, but the placement (we redid the stencil multiple times until I was 100% happy). His demeanor was SO polite and professional and he made the process so effortless. Couldn't have asked for a better first-tat experience. Edit: ended up lowering my review because I was unhappy with how my tattoo healed. I wanted script lettering and found it to be very shaky and uneven. I'm sure the shop excels at other styles. The warm professionalism is undeniable, maybe they just couldn't execute the tattoo in the style I wanted. I ended up going to another shop for a rework on it and I'm now satisfied with the piece. read more

I got a tattoo at Frequency a few months ago and am just now getting around to writing this review. I rarely write reviews but this one was necessary because of how great of an experience this was. Quick background: I got a small bee tattoo to honor the death of my father a few years ago. To start, the process of setting up an appointment was a breeze. I did it all over email via their website. They were super prompt in all of their correspondence. I sent pictures of what I had in mind and they provided a quote range depending on size. We set up an appointment over the email, and it was overall a super easy experience. I had done my research and had looked at all the artists' works prior to scheduling my appointment. I chose John based on pictures from their website and the shop Instagram (highly recommend checking it out if you like tattoos). When I got there John was ready with two drawings he had prepared, and when I requested it be a smidge smaller he made the change no problem. When he did the stencil he thought it was a little uneven, and insisted on perfecting it which showed me how much he cared about his work. He explained the whole process to me before we began, and made sure I found a position to be comfortable in. I picked Frequency because other reviews I read noted how respectful and judgement free the shop felt. I cannot reiterate enough how true this is. I knew going into the tattoo process that as a college-age girl getting a small upper back tattoo that I might be judged as being "basic". That could not be farther from the truth with John and the rest of the artists I interacted with. He was so kind, asked questions about the tattoo, and treated me with no judgement of any kind. We talked about the story behind my tattoo, and I felt comfortable enough with him to open up about my dad. He asked me about my life, joked with me, and was overall a super cool guy. The kind of guy you want to grab a beer with. He even took my snapchat picture for me before covering my tattoo because he's that awesome. Besides that his work is second to none. He made what I thought would be a pretty standard tattoo look so special. The detail he provided is spectacular and people frequently stop me to discuss the line work done on the wings. It is, simply put, a beautiful tattoo and everything I could've asked for in a first one. The price was so fair for the work he provided, and a steal in Philadelphia where tattoos can be ridiculously expensive. I could not recommend this place more, solely on the basis of the quality of work that they do. Add in how awesome they all were as people and the fair pricing, it really is a great place to get a tattoo. If I could give them 10 stars I would. read more

Had an awesome experience with Dave recently when he worked on a small tattoo for me and one a bit bigger for a friend. He took his time, made us feel comfortable with jokes but was 100% professional. He didn't just tell us what would work and wouldn't work, but explained why and didn't seem annoyed while doing it. Minus one star because I found their emailing system a little odd - when i first called for an appointment I was told to email a gmail address, I did, but there was no confirmation of receipt or anything really. Just felt a bit odd to send your personal art of ideas into the abyss with no acknowledgement. read more

I called ahead to see if they had availability for walk ins today and John was so personable on the phone. From the phone convo to the time I walked out, everyone was kind, patient and didn't make me feel like a kindergartener with zero tattoo experience (even though I totally am). I entered the shop within an hour of talking to John on the phone and was greeted kindly. I showed John the text I wanted and some different fonts I liked for it and he suggested one of those that would work best. As is probably often the case with girls wanting little text tattoos in a foreign language (cliche, I know), John said the size I originally envisioned was too small for the tattoo to hold up well over time. Instead of just blowing up the text to the correct font size, he took about 10 minutes to hand draw the text in the font we picked so that he could bring the letters together a little more so it would appear a little smaller without compromising the clarity of the ink. I'm extremely picky and had him put the placement stencil on in literally seven different places--some varying by mere millimeters. He never once made me feel rushed or like I was being annoying, even though I'm sure I was super annoying. At one point, after John had already spent an hour with me drawing the text and putting the stencil on for the fifth time, he really sweetly said, "and no worries if you feel hesitant. If you'd rather go home and think on it, you totally can." He didn't say it in a way that implied he was frustrated with me and wanted me out of the shop--I could tell he genuinely just wanted me to be happy with it and have no doubts. Well on attempt #7, the stencil just FELT right going on my skin and I knew even before looking in the mirror that it was in the right spot. Finally, I got in the chair. I was super nervous--I wondered if I might faint or not be able to sit still or handle the pain, but I survived. I was really surprised--my tattoo is on the rib area but I didn't experience it as painful. It was just like a sensation that I guess I recognized should be called pain, but for some reason my mind didn't react to it and I actually was able to find enjoyment in the sensation. I don't have other tattoos so I don't know if this had to do with John's light touch or what, but I'm gonna go ahead and say it was that because I'm a huge baby about pain. I started out with my headphones in just to calm the nerves but after a few minutes I took them out and chatted with John and occasionally two other artists for the rest of the time. It was done in about 30 minutes. I was in the shop from 11:30 to 2:30 and actively taking up John's time (drawing, printing and reprinting stencils, changing the placement) so for all that time and work, I thought the price was very reasonable. Definitely the greatest tattoo shop ever! Got a tattoo here a few days ago and it turned out amazing. They didn't over charge me or try to knock my idea like a lot of the places I've been. They made me feel completely comfortable and did an amazing job! He gave me clear instructions on aftercare and gave me a&d to put on it! They accept walk ins and take cards which is always a plus. I don't think I'll ever go anywhere else for a tattoo. Clean work. Great customer service! You could not ask for a better shop. read more
