The castle museum covers five floors including both cultural and historic displays. Each floor was organized with a theme and the displays are also noted in English. There are also some educational points for kids as well as a gift shop on the first floor. At the top of the tower, there are 4 rooms with amazing views of the city. These were the best views I've seen and on a clear day you see for miles -- the mountains and landscapes across Switzerland! You can just image how much the area has changed over the centuries but I am sure the view was always amazing. This was a great museum with lots to see a do. I enjoyed the new exhibits in the attic area and the logical flow of the museum overall. Sometimes castles are cold and filled with a lot of nothing, but this was quite the opposite! It is an easy walk up from the train station and although paths are marked here and there, just use your eyes to follow the stairs up to the castle. Also, the old town area is also a cute spot to walk around and stop for lunch! Note the shortened hours in the winter: April to October : daily 10.00-17.00 November to January : every Sunday 13.00-16.00 (24th December to 31st December 2017 open daily) February and March : every day 13.00-16.00

Climb up the narrow stairs the way the inhabitants did nearly a millenia ago. There's even this one area where they played sound effects of a battle outside while you climbed up the stairs as if you're a defender inside the castle. Also, just the views of the city of Thun from the top of the castle is worth the price of admission alone! (Btw, your admission is free with some variations of the Swiss Travel Pass.)

It closes at 5:30 and costs 28CHF... and it was still AMAZING! Imagine how epic it would have been if we actually got there in the morning!??!?! This open-air museum can entertain you over multiple days. There are so many things to do and learn and see that it's a bit overwhelming. It's also just nice to walk through the trails and admire the houses from afar! There are many animals and lots of different tours in the houses going on throughout the day. Unfortunately we missed all of them coming so late, but we still had an amazing time. The food options seem to be limited... but we also came when everything was closing, so that was definitely our bad. I would absolutely suggest this to anyone visiting, or anyone living in Switzerland. It has something for everyone and I will certainly be back because I only experienced a very small portion of the fantastic open air museum!

You can't really see all the buildings in one day so either plan a return trip (like we did) or do your research first and see the high points. Food is good and there are vegetarian options. If you are a fan of architecture/history/gardens then you will be in heaven. Our kids (12 & 14) really enjoyed it and there was regular spaced concessions so they wouldn't get "hangery". Loads of signage explaining everything, gardens everywhere, farm animals to be seen! You get to walk inside almost every building! Meet local Swiss docents doing traditional crafts (cheese, woodworking, rope making, pottery, baskets) there really is something for everyone! And there are opportunities to purchase crafts as well as food stuffs. Buy the guidebook and bring it home, read it cover to cover then go back again!

Absolutely fantastic day, we lucked out with having nice weather, especially since this is a place that you walk around... So many building and things to see, think we tried to cover the main points and were there for at least 3-4 hrs without ever running out of things to see and experience. The buildings where you could do things like wood cutting, etc were neat. We had fun trying on some old clothes and trying to imagine what it was like to live in the houses, which were all very nice and well maintained. Of course, the younger son and I were caught up with all the animals we got to see and pet, etc. The goats were very funny, trying to eat my hair and nibble on my jackets and the young pigs were so cute! Love that they have so many animals running around and available to pet. Of course, when we took a break and had our picnic lunch, the chickens were all hovering around begging for food,,,,so naturally we reinforced their begging by tossing them bits of bread! There was a horse and cart available and they even stopped during one of their travels to pick up a family that seemed weary of walking, but we thoroughly enjoyed walking through the beautiful museum area.... The section where the water wheels move the wood cutting machine and pound the bone into meal was really cool to see...and apparently they do things like outdoor theatre/plays there as well. Very nice visit, highly recommend for folks to visit!

Yelp Review 2026 #122:…read more A fun thing to do and an amazing place to visit. I got with a discount for being a Swiss Travel Pass holder. The bus stop is right in front of this place so it's super easy to get to. I got here a few minutes after they opened. So, there were quite a few people without being crowded. Except some of the people who were there were obnoxiously loud and it echoes through the cave. There are signs posted to be quiet but some people choose to ignore signs. There are parts that are a bit slick, some parts you have to bend a little bit as the ceiling is low, there are steps and stairs, it's chilly since it's a cave. Si, be sure to bring a jacket and wear the right shoes. Be mindful of those with mobility issues, they might have to wait for you at the restaurant (it's still a steep trek though) while you tour the cave. A lot of people would take breaks on the way to the entrance. Bring water. Each part of the cave is numbered so just follow the numbers - however the arrows can be confusing. I got to number 18 and didn't know where to go I ended going back to where I came from so I walked back to 18, walked the opposite direction and made it to 19-22 before exiting. "According to a legend, St. Beatus lived here in the 2nd century, who was believed to be one of the Irish messengers of the faith. After his arrival, Beatus is said to have driven away the dragon dwelling in the cave and then settled there to preach the teachings of Christianity and heal the sick." You'll see St. Beatus' cell, stalactites, stalagmites, and grottoes. You can have a nice view of Lake Thun from here.

The views from the top and outside are truly magical, overlooking a massive lake that makes the entire visit feel surreal. QUICK heads-up... there is quite a bit of walking and many steps, and some areas can be slippery, so it may not be ideal for anyone with limited mobility. That said, if you're able to do the walk, it's 100% worth it. A truly beautiful and memorable experience.
