Who doesn't like a good visit to a medieval castle!?! This one was built in the 12th century and went though several updates and changes over the centuries. The castle museum covers five floors including both cultural and historic displays. Each floor was organized with a theme and the displays are also noted in English. There are also some educational points for kids as well as a gift shop on the first floor. At the top of the tower, there are 4 rooms with amazing views of the city. These were the best views I've seen and on a clear day you see for miles -- the mountains and landscapes across Switzerland! You can just image how much the area has changed over the centuries but I am sure the view was always amazing. This was a great museum with lots to see a do. I enjoyed the new exhibits in the attic area and the logical flow of the museum overall. Sometimes castles are cold and filled with a lot of nothing, but this was quite the opposite! It is an easy walk up from the train station and although paths are marked here and there, just use your eyes to follow the stairs up to the castle. Also, the old town area is also a cute spot to walk around and stop for lunch! This is a must see if you're into medieval castles. See real armor worn by medieval knights and the weapons they wielded on display in the castle museum. Climb up the narrow stairs the way the inhabitants did nearly a millenia ago. There's even this one area where they played sound effects of a battle outside while you climbed up the stairs as if you're a defender inside the castle. Also, just the views of the city of Thun from the top of the castle is worth the price of admission alone! (Btw, your admission is free with some variations of the Swiss Travel Pass.) read more

Schönes Schloss zum besichtigen. Das Schloss beherbergt eine Dauerausstellung die unter anderem Töpferware, Uniformen und Musikinstrumente präsentiert. Die Ausstellungsräume sind einfach aber schön gemacht. Von den vier Türmen des Schlosses, die man besichtigen kann, hat man eine tolle Aussicht auf die schöne Stadt Thun. The Schloss (Castle) of Thun overlooks the town of Thun with it's great four white pillars. Each castle I have been to in Switzerland so far has been very unique and different. The castle of Thun did not disappoint. In late March, it was still quiet as the tourist season hasn't yet kicked off in Switzerland. Because of this, the castle was only open until 4pm on a Saturday. It was a beautiful warm sunny spring day, which was a perfect day to hike up the hill to the castle and view the amazing snow capped alps and countryside from the four towers of the castle. It is only a short trek up to the castle from the main town. The person at the ticket kiosk in the castle courtyard was extremely friendly. After only paying 8 francs (CHF) (great deal!), you immediately climb some narrow stars and end up in a giant room known as the Knights Hall. The size of the room blows your mind away. The wood beams are the original beams from the castle. Those beams have seen alot of history! You also immediately feel the temperature go down. On a hot summer day, I could imagine that the castle would be a fantastic way to escape the summer heat. From the knights hall you can climb up some more narrow stairs to enjoy the view from the four pillars. You can also view a couple of cells that had been used as a prison, some writing can still be seen etched in the walls from the prisoners. You can also view some old armor and weaponry. You then can descend back to the knights hall and then into the floors of the museum to learn a bit more about the history of Thun. Another bonus is that most of the plaques in the museum actually have translations in English! I have paid about 8 Francs just to climb up the stairs to the top of cathedral towers in order to enjoy a great view, so to get this to enter a castle not only to enjoy the view, but the building and museum was just an extra bonus.
