It's not very easy to find but when you do, it's all worth it. Great and intimate place with a good selection of starters and ramen. The waitress was very friendly and gave us the list of specials and explained what each of them where. Delicious food and very good service - highly recommended. Bonus : they have a little jar of elastic bands on the table for your hair, so it doesn't fall in the ramen. Genius :)

T22 ramen with corn topping - very good!

'Asta' (as I like to simply call it) - I have no idea of the '3' moniker, or indeed where the first…read moretwo went - is as genuine a Japanese canteen as you'll find in London. I was lucky enough to, along with a colleague, be taken here on several occasions for a quick lunch by a client (indicative of how welcoming the Japanese are!) By 'genuine' I mean no dumbed-down menus, no super-slick interiors to detract from potentially average food, and no gimmicks of any kind. The place is staffed and run by Japanese nationals as any self-respecting Japanese restaurant should be - and perhaps more importantly, frequented by them regularly, too. Service is smiling and attentive and no more that it needs to be. The food is inexpensive (~£6-8 for a bento, £7-11 for ramen, udon or donburi) and so tasty. On my most recent trip I had beef ramen with tan tan (sesame paste) soup base, and my brother had salmon teriyaki on brown rice. Both dishes had generous proportions of meat/fish, and the donburi came with a side salad and pickles. The unagi (eel) is also lovely, and the place does an extensive line in pick-your-soup base noodle bowl dishes where you have the option of shoyu, miso, and sesame as mentioned above, among others. I can't speak for the takeaway bento, but they looked pretty solid and of a decent quality. Drinks come in the familiar (Coke etc) and the more, um, 'traditional' - aloe vera juice, Pocari, cold bottled green and black teas and others. This place is rather hidden away on the fringes of the City, behind Aldgate station on the Petticoat Lane side. In many ways it's a great location as it's very much a local haunt, and in others a little frustrating as even if you're working in the City it can be a fair walk to get there and back! My advice would also be to get there early (between midday and half-past) to ensure a seat, as well as before some of the more popular items on the menu disappear. In brief summary, I couldn't really recommend this place enough if you're in the area. You'll get multi-kudos from any friends Nippon friends (or appreciators of their incredible cuisine) and have a lunch to beat the hell out of an uninspired sandwich / soft-drink combo whilst spending a similarly scant amount of your hard-earned cash. As your fellow diners would say: "itedakimas!"

Their rice is so delicious I could eat it alone without any other dish. The chicken was tender and flavourful and I really liked the fried potato thing that came with the side. Another great thing about Asta is that with bento boxes you can pick a variety of cold side dishes. I recommend the cucumbers and the rice noodles. Will be back!!

If you don't pay attention you may walk past one of the BEST ramen experiences one may ever have…read more The restaurant was unassumingly stacked along all the other offering on Old Street. Upon entry, the staff greeted you warmly and were on point to execute a perfectly designed bowl of ramen for your eating pleasure. I honestly felt guilty from the way I enjoyed my ramen given how much my oldest daughter loves the food. I appreciated how open the staff was to making my bowl "extra" spicy and adding yet another egg even though it wasn't specifically on the menu but satisfied my particular desire. What added to the "realness" of the resturant was the steady flow of what seemed to be true ramen experts coming in and navigating the scene, menu, and food at lightning speed with even better eating results. If ramen is your thing, then you NEED to check out this place. Definitely one of the top spots for Ramen I've been to in all my travels. Sorry for no pics, but I dove in before I could contain myself, lol.

We ordered the abura soba and the spicy tonkotsu in mild spicy with extra egg and menma (bamboo shoots). The aroma from the broth just fills this place with warmth and calls you in for a fantastic meal - broth or broth less. We'll be frequenting this place a lot more after this discovery. Also, they serve their beers in ice cold cups, so order a pint of asahi with your meal!

The chicken came piping hot but the batter was bland and needed more seasoning and the chicken could have done with a marinade. We both ordered a veggie ramen, one spicy miso and the other spicy konbu. Both were a bit bland and could have done with more base flavour. The broth was watery and needed more of a boost. To top it all off, the beer was flat and even upon sending it back, another glass of the same draft beer came back. Service was slow and unhappy. Our waiter seemed on the other side of miserable. Cheer up! It can't be that bad. Unfortunately, a disappointing meal.

We decided not to travel into the city and instead find something to eat nearby. This place was about a mile from our flat and although has few reviews seemed promising, so we were on our way. We arrived around 9p and the place was packed! We were seated at the bar and ordered gyoza, beer, and three bowls of spicy tonkotsu. The gyoza was delicious and you could definitely tell that it was homemade. The ramen was delicious! The noodles were excellent and the broth was flavorful and the right amount of spice. The egg was pretty good, not the best I've had but still good. The portion sizes were perfect and we walked home with full bellies. The beer was delicious!
