Bonfare is a real mixed bag. Cheap gas that comes at a price, a decent selection, some unsavory customers. It is locally owned and it is convenient to those living in the area or just passing through downtown, so weigh those pros and cons when you stop in for an experience. Plus, I think they shot a scene from Bad Grandpa here? I have stopped in for gas on a couple occasions. They are supposedly the cheapest gas in the downtown area, but I haven't found the trade off - broken, slow pumps, $50 hold charge - to be anything that would make me go out of the way for their petrol. They do have a fairly good selection of snacks and goods inside, but I agree with a previous reviewer that it's kind of annoying that they don't sell beer in singles. Not that that is commonly what I'm looking for, mind you. The service is just neutral in my opinion. Nothing offensive, but no smiles or over the top gestures either. read more

This place can look a little dodgey... especially after dark. Fortunately, they roll down the shutters at midnite. But it is awfully convenient for those of us who live nearby. It's your standard mom and pop type Quik-E-Mart, except you never get to see what's rung up on the cash register and the prices are sometimes highly variable. The fridge case in the back has been known to break down, so I wouldn't advise buying milk here (and check your beer to make sure it's cold). But as far as neighborhood shop clerks go, the family that runs the place is friendly enough. They always have some bizarre gypsy music playing and are cordial, but not entirely chatty. Directly across from Nation Wide Meats. They have an ATM and some of the oldest gas pumps around. If it's convenient to patronize this place, do so. But realize you may encounter some ghetto-esque characters. I posted some pics of a burning RV that someone drove into the parking lot and abandoned (while it was on fire). YOU SUCK! SITREP Don't use your credit card here. I need to return my Enterprise car rental with a full gas tank as I conclude this most recent work trip and choose for the first time to fill the tank up here. THE SETUP I pull into the Bonfare Markets gas pump space #2 and proceed to fill up the tank. The pump clearly lists the options next to the button selections, "Outside Credit" or "Inside Credit". I've seen this before at other gas stations, it's pretty standard. THE DEETS I select the "Outside Credit" button, then it spools to the next screen asking for me to swipe my credit card (CC). I insert my Citibank MasterCard, it then asks for my Zip Code (as the standard security challenge for credit cards), but instead of authorizing the pump, it says "See Cashier." "Well okay", I think. I guess after car rental, hotel stay and other incidental expenses for this work trip, I must have already tapped out my limit on this card (this one is only $1000 anyways which can be hit fast with a 2-week work trip). But I still take out my iPhone and go to my Citibank application, and in my account information, it clearly indicates that a $50 hold was just placed by Bonfare Markets. *WTF?!?* "So why aren't they allowing me to pump gas?", I wonder. So I go inside, and the 2 women working the register - speaking a far eastern language to each other until they see me - listen to me with very concerned looks on their faces as I explain that the gas is not pumping, but I still got charged $50. They acknowledge finally that there is no working outside CC option, and that CC transactions must be done inside. I tell them that's not what the pump says or did. The younger lady takes my credit card and swipes it at the register and says "Well it says 'declined'" . At this juncture I show her my Citi-app on my iPhone where it says Bon Fair has the $50 hold. The remainder credit on this card now will not allow a SECOND $50 hold - which is what she is doing at this point with her re-swiping - since now the card indeed is tapped out with both charges and holds, including the 1st $50 Bon Fare hold. They actually ask if I want to use another credit card or a debit card as I must have looked back at them incredulously and just snapped my card out of her hand. CHEVRON - No Issues I end up heading to Chevron on Richards Blvd. The previous incident just makes you wonder did I miss something? But after engaging in the same steps, Citibank still lets me do outside credit at Chevron, and Chevron fills the tank all the way to $45.02, even though now I am OVER my credit limit since the amount I allowed for myself to fill my tank up was pushed beyond with the $50 Bon Fare hold which did NOT get me any gas. CITBANK I had called the Citibank Customer Service line, and explained the situation to the representative and let her know I just wanted to be sure this doesn't devolve into a fraud situation. However, the representative than indicated that y card had been swiped not only 2 times, but 4 times in total (my swipe at the pump, and apparently THREE times at the mart's register inside). She'actually flagged the transaction - and the mart - on her own volition to follow-up with an investigation. Will I buy a 7-lb bag for 2 single dollars? SURE. That gets "A" star. But what mart worth it's salt doesn't have ice? The separation occurs with exemplary customer service or abysmal experiences. This is the latter. THE LOWDOWN It could be in the final analysis a number of things: (1) people who don't know how to use their own equipment properly, (2) people who can't communicate in English sufficiently to convey information back and forth, or even....(3) fraud. At this juncture, I'll just be happy to have the $50 hold disappear after a few days, but what a terrible inconvenience to the consumer created by this store's f*ck-up, which would have been worse (more expensive) if I had not been able to fill the tank up someplace else and got hit with expensive surcharges/fees for returning the rental with an empty tank. ADDENDUM: It took 25 days for the $50 hold to fall off my credit card. That was $50 tied up as non-usable credit until that hold dropped off. read more

This is a great little run down shop - the owner is who Matt Groening based Kwik-E-Mart's Apu Nahasapeemapetilon on - I'm not joking. All the stuff I said before is still true, but toadd to the greatness of Bonfare: They've stepped up the selection of both wine and ice cream. Wine now includes 3 or 4 90-point Wine Spectator selections. They've got the Gascon Malbec for $10.99 (it's the same price at Cost Plus World Market, and $2 more at Safeway), the Ergo Rioja, and an Alamos Malbec, also for cheaper than Safeway and BevMo. Nice. Ice cream now includes Mexican ice cream bars in coconut, vanilla, and all the classic fruit flavors. Just in time for the warm weather. There are also the standard ice cream bars and tubs, and, (behold!) a great seelction of Ben and Jerry's. At least a dozen different flavors. When is the last time you were at a gas station with a dozen flavors of Ben and Jerry's? A trip down the packaged food aisles, also discovered multiple kinds of cake mix, pasta cuts, hamburger helper, soups, etc. None of it great for you, but you gotta appreciate selection of food products at a store that makes most of its profit on gas and booze. read more

I went to the market last night to purchase some beer. They don't sell any single beers. Everything is in a six, or twelve pack. I was a little disappointed by didn't let it worry me too much. I bought something else instead. When I went to the counter, an elderly man helped me. He didn't speak very good English and mumbled a lot. I could barely understand him after I asked him to repeat himself. We had a lot of trouble completing the transaction. I asked him to repeat himself a couple times and he got irritated. I asked for cash back and he charged me an extra dollar. I asked him about the charge and he mumbled something like "I told you that before." Really? All I heard was mah-moompfh, mah, moompfh, moompfh, mumm, mah, mah, moompfh, mah, moompfh, moompfh.... It sounded like he was talking with a mouth full of marbles. Charlie Brown's teacher is easier to understand. I'm not sure which was worse. His disposition or communication skills. Either way, I'm going to avoid this place in the future. I come here strictly for gas. According to my handy-dandy Gas Buddy app, it's consistently the least expensive fuel in Midtown. You may find an Arco that's a few pennies cheaper but there's a 35 to 45-cent ATM card charge that usually makes your per gallon price higher. Occasionally, I'll find one of the four pumps out of order. Occasionally, I'll get hassled for change by hobos straying from their trek up and down The Methadone Mile(21st Street.) But, overall, my experience at Bonfare has been positive. Get in, get my cheap gas, get out. I did just buy a Mega Millions ticket here. When I win, I'll bump up this rating to 4 stars. read more

Bonfare has a great selection of stuff, granted it's all packaged, processed and canned. When you're in a hurry, it's a convenient one-stop shop. The service is just OK -- the guys that own/work the place are not rude, but they're not over the top "did you find everything you needed?" either. Don't expect to make chit-chat. Surprisingly, this spot's also pretty hoppin' during the evening and not just inside. If you're anything like me, and pretty much anyone who drives a gas guzzling car, you love the sound of cheap gas. You're in luck! Bonfare Markets has really cheap gas. If you use a smart phone that has apps, I highly suggest you download the app called, "GasBuddy." The app helps you locate the cheapest gas in your general area. This is how we found this place. It's a gas station with a mini mart. Don't expect luxury, although it seems to have all the basic necessities with a few sketchy looking souls passing through. Decent beer selection. Not as good as AP on 21st and K but closer to where I hang my hat. Has all the regular items you'd expect to find at a gas station mart. Staff is friendly and gas prices are good for the area. A lack of some standard household stuff but again, it's not Safeway. Oh - and to all the people moaning about the debit card holds - calm yourself. It's clearly stated on the pumps, so go walk the 10 feet to the cash register and pay there if you want to avoid the "dreaded" hold. Not that difficult. read more

Do not use this gas station! Sketchy, dodgy...it's all these things and more. It's like Ebola for your bank account. I bought $30 gas there on Wednesday and got a receipt. Everything seemed fine. No need to look at the receipt, right? Who looks at a gas station receipt? Flash to Friday. I'm looking at the ol' Wamu account. What's this I see? A $50 charge from the Bonfare? This can't be. I know I only spent $30. But wait....I scroll down the account statement and bam! there's the $30 transaction! I dig out the receipt and wtf?? it's not my name on the receipt. Sure, it's for $30, but the name says Nazir Khan and the credit card number is different. Now, I'm 100% sure I printed my own receipt and watched the receipt come out of the little receipt slot. So, what's going on? I have no idea, but just to make sure, I call my bank and ask them what time I spent that $30. The receipt says 5:02; the bank says it was at 5:03. Close enough, so I know it's the same receipt. And I know I didn't spend another $50 because I've got a little car. So what the $#%@#, Bonfare? I'll be putting a call into Wamu on Monday when that $50 clears...and blacklisting your sketchy, dodgy, gas-filching a$$. read more

Bonfare is my nearest beer store, making me an increasingly non-consensual regular. From time to time the evening freakshow in there is amusing, but most of the time it is merely smelly. There seems to have been a management change recently from a friendly, dark-skinned, South Indian looking guy and his voluptuous blonde girlfriend to a very gruff mustachioed Sikh with a large cadre of co-religionist (judging from the bangles) lackeys. The selection has subsequently gone downhill: there used to always be at least Lagunitas IPA, but now the only IPA they have regularly is the decent but ultimately macrobrewed Red Hook Longhammer. The guy who is usually there at night now seems a little unbalanced. He sometimes moves outrageously slowly or asks weird non-sequitur questions. Oh well, what can you do? They are open late and have a couple of decent beers, including Rogue Dead Guy. And to the guy and girl out front who recently asked me for sixty-five cents to get a half-pint: I would have given it to you if you'd said a fifth, or even a full pint. A half-pint!? That's just sad. That's like a drink and a half each! It's not going to get you buzzed, it's just going to get you arguing. I love my little neighborhood market! They always have the cheapest gas in town. Down the road, when Shell and Chevron are charging close to $4.00 a gallon, you can come to Bonfare where it's usually $3.69 :) In response to the reviews about the staff not being overly friendly: If you go in there enough, they will be. I live a block away and I look forward to visiting my buddies at Bonfare. The customer service is always great when I go. Don't pay at the pump here. The company has a policy to "reserve" $50 in addition to the gas you buy and won't release the funds for 2 days or more. My tank takes aprox $54 to fill, add the $50 they "reserved" this causes embarrassing lunch date situations and additional BANK FEES! Do NOT pump gas with your cc/debit card unless you want $100 of your money on "hold" for a couple of days. It was news to me and a lesson learned the hard way. I swore this place off completely. You try to purchase something and it takes like 10 minutes to check out each customer. They were rude, they try to pull stuff over on you. Just crappy. But mostly, it's the waiting.The WAITING!! Their credit card machines for the gas pumps do not work...apparently. If you, like me like to use your credit or debit card at the pump, then just give up on this place now. That decision will add years to your life (both from the frustration you will suffer at how long you waited for nothing and in sheer time you stand there waiting in vain for something to happen). Let me explain the way that I learned this purdy little lesson. You learn this not by reading the sign posted there (because there is none), but by trying your credit card and waiting for it to do something. The display says "One moment please" so you keep thinking "Well, maybe if I'm patient, it will work." But then you give up, hit cancel and try again - after all, it seemed to be doing something. Finally after realizing this is going nowhere, you go in and ask "Is the credit card machine not working out there?" The response is something like "You can pay here." Well, that wasn't really the question, was it? Now, because of the INSANE lack of gasoline in central midtown, in the past, I went there way more than my principles would dictate. But I ALWAYS left SO irked. If the credit card thingy doesn't work, PUT AN EFFING SIGN ON IT. It's simple really. Now, new owners took over and I gave it another chance a month or two ago. The experience was surprisingly ...simple. Easy. They were fine. Tonight, as I was running on fumes, on my way home I was thinking "Oh, brilliant! I can stop at the Bonfare now that they are not actively trying to drive away business." I swipe my card. "One moment please." I think "No, they fixed it. It worked last time. They were nice. Just give it a minute." After trying to cancel and waiting for a bit, I finally realize I have been duped. AGAIN. I go in and ask if it is working. The response: "you can pay here." Again, not the question. He wants to know how much and I say $10 and suggest they put a sign up instead of making people wait outside for something that is never going to happen while being harassed aggressively and continuously for change by the multiple street kids hanging out in the parking lot. For your info Bonfare: I would have liked to have filled up my gas tank. That's right, I would have GLADLY spent about $50 there tonight. Instead, since you are inconsiderate, poorly-managed jerks, you got $10. Is this really not worth fixing the machine or putting a sign on it? Do not use your credit/debit card here because they charge your card an additional $50 without your authorization in addition to the actual amount you authorized for purchasing gas! I paid with my debit card INSIDE of the station and they apparently did a separate transaction just to hold $50 of my funds for no reason because much to my surprise there were two transactions showing on my bank account from them. This happened on a Thursday evening and that unauthorized $50 charge didn't release back into my bank account until the following Tuesday. So $50 of my money was withheld from me for a total of 5 days without my permission. I'll never come back to this gas station again, they shouldn't be getting away with that. What a terrible thing to do to your own customers. read more

Nothing quite like getting woken in the middle of the night, while you're asleep, by your pone going off, thinking you're either getting laid, or someone has died, only to find that your phone going off is alerting you to a possible fraud on your bank account: I went to Bonfare ONCE yesterday, yet I have two charges (back to back) on my bank account. One charge was for $18.97, which sounds about right for what I bought; the other was for $40.26 ... It sucks that they're the closest corner store (that is open late) to my house; but I'd much rather travel a few blocks more, than deal with BS like this.
