What an awful place. I came in here to grab some beers and had a bag on hand from spending the night in Sacramento. I went to purchase the beers and the clerk gave me a strange look. I thought he was just going to ask me for my ID but he asked me what was in my bag. I was like what, why do you need to know what's in my bag? You would think there would be a lot Mom and Pop Style delis and places to eat downtown and in Midtown Sacramento but believe it or not there isn't very many but I have to say with all honesty that the General Store and Deli on 5th Street in the corner of n and 5th is one of the best places not just for food but for anything you might get out a convenience store they have inventory more than most convenience stores more than a 7-Eleven or bonfare but the homemade food the deli it's absolutely amazing it's all authentic they serve breakfast lunch homemade Brick Oven pizzas and more but I think what makes the General Store stand out amongst other delis and eateries in downtown Sacramento is the customer service the employees or should I say employee because the worker Gill seems to be always there whether you going in the morning or right before they close and he is never not pleasant and more than happy to help with any kind of specialtie you might want even if it's not on the menu if he can he would make it for you super friendly very unique nice fellow I go there at least 3 to 4 times a week to eat and when I do I look forward to chatting with him I honestly feel like he's one of my good friends even though I just know him from the deli I don't really know how he does it because I know a lot of people myself included would be super stressed out and probably not very friendly having to work such long hours and deal with so many customers at once often there is a line of people waiting for food and another line of people waiting at the cash register to purchase other items and everybody for the most part is nice and patient and he doesn't ever seem to get stressed out or anything he's just a very nice fellow honestly this review is about the delicious food and great selection of items you can't find in most stores but it's also about him and his great attitude if you've never been to the General Store and Deli on the corner of 5th and N Street I suggest you go if anything simply to meet Gil and maybe have a chicken quesadilla because they are one of the best I have ever eaten I honestly think that he make a better quesadilla than most Mexican restaurants in this area lol it's true though I would give them an 11 out of 10 and recommend to anybody who's never been to the General Store & deli to go there for lunch and try it for themselves you will not be disappointed . read more

A decent and relatively well-maintained General Store that caters to the downtown crowd aka a lot of State workers. It's not doing anything exceptional but it is a good option for those in the area. I like this store in particular because it's a little off the beaten path. It's naturally situated in an area where the only clientele are going to be folks who are coming to, leaving or breaking from their job in the numerous surrounding buildings. That eliminates a lot of the traffic and interesting clientele you'd get with, say, your traditional 7-11. The store includes a deli which sells sandwiches, wraps, soups and salads. I've mostly stopped in for snacks over the years but I did have a sandwich once. It was fine in a pinch, but I can also think of many tastier and more exciting offerings from other nearby eateries. read more

The price is right! So, this place doesn't have gourmet foods...the ice cream is all melted, and the service is sometimes....well, given with a mix of boredom and annoyance. But, it is super cheap, super convenient, and super consistent. For $6 I can get a burrito in Downtown Sacramento! Heck, I cannot even get a water for that price at anywhere else. For $5 I can get salad...but it's just lettuce (no dressing). Still, good for loosing weight. Never had their pizza. Also, sometimes I get excellent service - I think it's the owner. He's a hard worker and there's always something new here. I am really happy this place is here and will continue to frequent. read more

An annual conference and stay at the Embassy Suites Riverfront doesn't leave a whole lot of walking-distance options for a sizer of Michelob Ultra and a bottle of water (that isn't $6 in your hotel room anyway). Just a few blocks down Capitol Mall and hang a right on 5th... and you are there. The store features a sandwich counter that was decidedly closed during my visit, but the cold cases were working, and I found my refreshments. $9 for a sixer isn't the best price, but certainly not the worst. The fellow working behind the register was very nice, and hooked me up with a couple of bags since I was walking through Moocherville with a six pack and snacks. I started working downtown for the state in the beginning of 2019. When I first started I was trying all the different restaurants and delis in the area. Because it was midtown, it seems like every place was extra expensive for items I could get at other locations in Sacramento for lower prices. The Subway alone charged an extra $1-$2 for all their menu items. Then I came across this general store. Half of it was under construction and they had a little sandwich station in the back. I would come here for beverages or bags of chips, but I didn't want to try the sandwiches because of the construction dust and the person making the sandwiches didn't appear to have the best hygiene. About a month later I was hungry and only had $5 in my pocket (not enough to eat downtown) so I went there, saw the sandwich prices and decided to give it a try. I'm so glad I did. The first sandwich I tried was their meatball sandwich. It was great quality and they had almost all the same toppings as Subway. The best part was it was only $3.99!!! This has become my go to lunch spot since. Now, a couple months later, they have finished a lot of the construction which is now in the form of a pizza station, a section for baked goodies, and a section for gelato. Today, I got the pizza... 2 slices for $2.99!!! I recommend this place for anybody working in midtown on a budget. The only reason I can't give 5 stars is because the staff look unclean, unhappy, and just give off a total vibe that they don't want to be there. read more

I redact my previous review where I gave them 3 stars, and I hereby up it to 5. It took me until today, when I was upset to see that someone had broken into this store and stole from them over the weekend, to realize how much I love this place and the people that work here. There's a boarded up broken window in the door, and a couple hastily collected food items gone, but other than that no one was hurt. Thankfully! Other Reasons this place deserves an updated review: -This place is truly a treasure trove of random goodies, whether pre-packaged, frozen, or made fresh. -Staff is completely redoing the frozen section to make sure that it is sanitary for customers after the aforementioned break in, possibly conducted by starving urban bears with a taste for tearing apart freezers and stealing frozen food items. -New help has recently been hired to make things go smoother, especially during busy mornings and lunch hours. -Now with MOAR ICE CREAM -Whenever I can't reach an item, someone tall is around to help. And my favorite: -Watching daytime tv with my favorite deli guys on my lunch break. You can't beat that. read more

It's good for getting snacks for work but be sure to check the price or expiration date on everything. Sometimes the people here leave the price sticker on their items and you will see how much more they charge than what they paid. I recently bought a soda and when I got back to the office and opened the bottle it did not make a fizz sound. So I checked the date and... the bottle of soda was 2 years old... Can't believe I paid for an overpriced bottle of soda that is 2 years old. A coworker of mine bought a bag of Oreos from here and when she opened it and tasted it she looked at the expiration date...it was 5 years old. Wtf?! Where do they get these items? A trash can? Update: definitely check the price on items. I was about to get an Arizona Green Tea and they charged me $2 for it. On the can it specifically says 99 cents. Don't let them rip you off. My biggest issue is that I ordered a turkey and avocado sandwich and it was literally 1 slice of turkey on it. 1 SLICEEEEE!!! Also the icee machine never had coke icee. I am going to try to not let this recent experience cloud my judgement on this place and give it 3 stars. I say that because I just had the worst salami sandwich in my life! There were literally five and what I guess you can call a half slices of salami on the bread. Even with the additional veggies, the sandwich appeared to be "starving" to say the least. The service was hectic and there was just too much going on! I will be peeking in to check on the staff before deciding on eating here in the future! My past experiences have been great. The staff has been very knowledgeable and courteous and really seemed to enjoy their jobs. I have tried the burrito bowls, quesadilla and a few soup and sandwich combos. I honestly come here if I need to, since it's near my work. I used to come here for their soup, but after trying other places, this isn't worth it. They're prices are a bit too much. If Safeway was closer, I would totally go there instead! Some of their items are expired too, so please check the expiration dates before purchasing. Also, when they have a sale item, for example 2/$4, take it! In normal stores, if you buy one, they'll charge $2. However, this place charges at its retail price, which is WAY too much. Even if you don't need the 2 or 10 items, get all those because paying for it individually is SO not worth it! This is just the grocery part. The deli part is a tiny bit better, but not by much. Their food was okay tasting back then. Then again, I wasn't exposed to other foods around the area yet. My "favorite" soup would be the clam chowder. However, now it's hella salty and WAY too thick for my taste. Their sandwiches are boring. I usually get tuna at Subway or Togo's, and it's pretty good. Here, it was below my standards. The bread wasn't toasty enough. The food preparer actually cut through to the other side of the bread, so the fillings fell out while I was eating it. The tuna was plain and watered down. And, they gave me minimal veggies. The guy who rung me was probably new because he didn't know how to key in the lunch special. AND, he forgot my spoon and napkin! I want the old people back! They knew how to do things correctly! Like I said, I only come here when I'm desperate. I'd rather spend x more money elsewhere. Accidently left my breakfast at home and needed something to hold me over until lunch. I have passed this store/deli multiple times, and never realized that there was an actual deli in the back (from the outside it looks like a typical convenience store). However, an old co-worker of mine mentioned that the deli was amazing and reasonably priced. Upon entering the deli, I was greeted by a very charismatic gentleman named Carlos. With hesitation, I decided to give their Croissant breakfast sandwich a try. I say "with hesitation", because in the past I have been to breakfast spots that serve breakfast croissants that are the equivalent of a frozen Jimmy Dean croissant. Thankfully, that was not the case. My croissant was fresh, toasted, and paired with a slice of pepper jack cheese, and a sausage patty...all for $3. A majority of the meals offered here are sandwich based. Therefore, I would highly recommend this place over the Subway (who eats Subway anyways?!) that is a couple of blocks away. The unfriendly, rude owner charges what he wants. There is no pricing available so you really don't know what the amount will be. I have purchased in the past a few items nothing too expensive but still the price changes aka increases each time. Packs of 7lb ice is $2.29 but I've been charged $2.98 to $3.29 at times. The owner as well as two of his employees are not practicing social distancing, face coverings, capacity. When the owner feels like wearing a mask ( rare) he wears it incorrectly with his nose exposed. I guess he figures why wear a mask when his nose is exposed so there he stands - no mask. He does not wear gloves either to make sandwiches or box the pizza slices after he's handled money. I've seen him give back change then go to the back and resume handling food. Hands down the best sandwiches I have ever tasted! We had them cater a dance competition at UC Davis over the weekend and everyone absolutely loved the sandwiches! You could tell the bread was freshly baked that morning and all the veggies were so fresh and tasty. But the kicker was the flavor and sauces they had! We ordered all veggie sandwiches and were blown away by how much flavor and spices they were able to pack in one sandwich. Literally everyone was asking for seconds and thirds!! Furthermore, the staff was so kind and helpful. They made 250 sandwiches for us- everything made FRESH that same morning, including the bread! They made sure everything was exactly how we wanted it and the order was ready to pick up on time, despite such a large order. We will definitely be getting our catering done by them in the future. I highly recommend them- whether it's catering or just to stop by for a quick snack/lunch. Very convenient location downtown as well! 10/10 for service, quality, and professionalism. read more

AWFUL hours. Not serving the community well. Hours are always inconsistent with what is posted. This community downtown needs a corner store we can depend on to be OPEN. During the week they close at 7pm, way too early! On weekends they don't open until 11am and are only open until 7pm as well. They are missing out on so much business in the morning, evenings, especially after Kings games and big events. read more
