First time in this store and I bought what is usually a nice bottle of red wine. I opened it up and it was discoloured, smelt like nothing and tasted totally flat. It's a Cabernet Sauvignon so it was definitely off to taste flat and bad. It was 23 dollars so I called and explained that it was a bad bottle and I wanted to come exchange it since I could not drink it and will be throwing it away. The man I spoke to told me "no" even though I had the receipt and explained it was undrinkable. I don't think this liquor store takes proper care of the bottles and sure has no idea about customer service or common decency. I like craft IPAs and if you don't buy them at the brewery the chances are prett high you might have bought a skunked six-pack or two. A good beer needs to be treated well, warm conditions will ruin a good bottled beer in days. When you see the stacks of 12-packs out on the floor at Safeway or Raley's or BevMo or Curtis Park Market, that means the beer is likely to be heat struck. Don't buy it. At A&P their stockroom is refrigerated (like Corti Brothers on Folsom). The beer comes off the refrigerated truck into their refrigerated stock room, where it's loaded from the back as needed. The owner promised me once that if I ever open a bad beer from their place, that if I brought back the other 5 he'd exchange the six. I've been picking up beer there for a couple years, and every single one has been great. Love it. Yelper insider tip - the yellow curb outside is COMMERCIAL - the Sactown Parking Nazis will ticket you just for the time it takes to run in the store - be careful. Green (15min) or White (5min) curbs they probably won't, but parking at the yellow curb could cost you $50. read more

This is your typical sketchy midtown liquor store with a twist. John the owner is a great guy. He gets in some rare items on occasion and texts his regulars to give us a heads up. So if you're a regular buyer of something uncommon I highly recommend shopping here and if you're a loyal customer it will pay off! Prices quite fair. This is one of the liquor stores I would stop by when I am in the downtown area. The prices are reasonable and the store is pretty clean. I was surprised when I found out they had Fortaleza tequila here. I would normally have the tequila at bars, but it was nice to actually purchase a bottle to have at the house. I'm on board with the A & P love train. My main supplier for Sobe Iced Tea, beef jerky, Rel's sandwiches, late night Zima runs (that was only a phase, really), cigarettes and lottery tickets. Everyone there has always been really nice. One day I went in thinking I was uber-cool with my trendy brand-new cool looking Asian printed T-shirt and the owner started laughing until he got teary and gave me a hug and a pat on the head. I went in thinking I was going to see aisles of delicious beer, rare kinds, stuff I've never seen before because of ridiculous liquor laws... what do I find in Sacramento's "best" liquor store for the "biggest" selection of beer? About 5 refrigerator cases of various 6 packs. The first thing I always look for is Westmalle, once I see Westmalle, I can breathe and move on. But I see no Westmalle. I see Chimay, a damn fine beer, and seems to be very popular here. But other than Leffe and Hoegaarden (owned by Bud who is owned by South Africa), a lambic or two, and I believe 2-3 other varieties of PURE Belgian beers that was IT for their Belgian beer selection. Fine, move to the microbrews. Flying Dog? Yawn. Dogfish Head is disgusting -- there I said it. North Coast, ok, now we are talking. My heart almost stops when I see something I've NEVER seen before - SIX packs of Chimay Blue (they come in 4, traditionally) -- my close 2nd favorite to Westmalle. I have NEVER seen 6 packs of Chimay Blue before! EVER! It was cute, and homemade, and the bottles are too fat for the packaging, but whatever, I was STOKED. But I saw no price tag. I figure -- it can't be THAT much more expensive than in the rich burbs of Detroit (no really, they kind of exist, take my word for it). At a ritzy food store a 4 pack of Chimay Blue runs around $18 or $4.50 a bottle. At this joint? $45 for a six pack of Chimay Blue, that's $7.50 a bottle. That is insane. That's what you people pay out here? I can buy a 75cl bottle of Chimay Blue for $11! That's more than 2.25 small 33cl Chimays in one big bottle beer in there ~$4.85/bottle. When my jaw dropped, the cashier said "well, we ARE downtown" (I'm like... we are? This is downtown? Sorry, first day here, gotta find the booze store). Honey, $7.50 a 33cl bottle isn't because it's a store that's located "downtown", it's $7.50 a bottle because you are price gauging my eyes out. I felt like my heart was being ripped out. It these kinds of pocket strangling prices is why hipsters drink PBR. OK probably not, but it was a shot. Citing this epic fail for the following reasons: 1. NOT a huge selection of beer. No rare beers! Or hard to find beers! It's all easy to find mass distributed stuff. Or ANY beer I haven't seen before. It was such a tame selection! 2. My local grocer on the rimjob of Detroit carriers a better selection of beer than this joint. And I mean at least, at LEAST, 10x more varieties of beer and rare/exotic liquors. That's sad. Be ashamed. Now. 3. Westmalle. None. Should be automatic fail, but I was willing to let it slide just to see what else they had ... and it wasn't a whole lot. 4. No 750ml beer bottles in the chiller (unsure if they even HAD warm big bottles -- wtvr TJ's has Chimay blue 750mls for a good price). I'll never shop here again unless this is addressed. The service has never been great, but it's a corner store. That isn't the reason for this review. This is more of a PSA. tl;dr: There was an ally fire that almost took down a building a block away. They begrudgingly gave me a fire extinguisher after convinging them, then ran back in when they saw the fire truck lights, with the fire expunging-apparaatus. Here's the story. My favorite cafe is nearby and I was on my way to do some work after dinner. On my way there, I smelled something akin to a campfire. At first, it was faint and I thought someone was burning some kind of scent for an art show. As I walked up, I realized it wasn't that at all, there was an alley fire, and it was spreading, quick. I ran to the nearby cafe and demanded their fire extinguisher. They gave it to me in less than 15 seconds. I ran back and emptied it in the fire. It went out, but I noticed that the embers were resting on a pile of leaves, they were going to reignite. I ran back to the cafe and had them call 911. There wasn't anything open nearby, it's mostly commercial buildings. This was the nearest place aside from the sushi spot two blocks in the other direction. I booked it over, knowing that with the service I'd received, it may be a tough sell. This was basically the fourth 50-meter dash I'm running within a few minutes. I get there and the guys look at each other. It's a FIRE in your NEIGHBORHOOD. The cashier was a complete a**hole, and wouldn't give the extinguisher to me. That's annoying but alright, you don't know me. After convincing him for 30 seconds that he needed to do something he says "Man, you don't know my boss." I was starting to get livid at this point. He decides this might be something to do and waddles as slow as you can imagine, with NO urgency, with the extinguisher. We step outside and hear the sirens. In the distance, we see the lights and he says 'See, there they are.' Yeah I know, if you read this, I called for them you moron. He shuffles back inside, immediately. Do this exercise, kind cashier. Imagine your sister was in that building, your cousin, or even your cat. Moreover, imagine if it was your home that needed help. How would you want people to react? I'll leave you with that, I'm already annoyed that I'm taking the time to do this and potentially harm a local business. However, if this is a novelty shop making money from the neighborhood and they don't give a da*n about the people in it, do they deserve the business? There are better places nearby. Fix your service, or you won't get my business. read more

These guys are my friends when no one else will have me. I love seeing their smilling faces around 10am on any given weekday when I goin to buy a pack of smokes. Or the six pack Hoegaarten. They also have a fun and entertaining corner (especially on the weekends) with lots to look at from the local abandoned house dwelling bum to the young downtowner hipster to the over the top gay folk who have sauntered down from Faces or The Depot. The neighborhood liquor store. While the corner shops sell beer and wine this is one of the few places in midtown save for grocery stories that sells spirits on top of regular snacks, wine, and a crazy selection of beer. There are many pluses for A&P that you won't really get unless you frequent it -- for one, the guys behind the counter are really, really nice. Everyone is informal but helpful and while most of their attention is fixed on the television stations right across from the checkout counter they're always onhand to answer questions and overall pleasant. Secondly, the beer selection is not your normal corner store selections. While there are some standards onhand A&P does things differently by seemingly creating their own six packs from lesser-known brews and bottles you wouldn't find outside of specialty stores. Now the only downside is that these packs are much pricier than normal, and with no price tag listed you don't really know what you're getting into without asking for a check at the counter. But it's nice to have the option of a six-pack of Old Rasputin or some lesser-known canned stout without having to drive to BevMo or Total Wine. The only other negative is that most of the liquor prices are noticeably higher than normal listings in grocery or specialty stores but really you pay for the convenience and it isn't an outrageous rise. Some are spot on (a bottle of Jameson for $25 if pretty standard), others vary, but it's never too much of a lift to deter me from buying a bottle. One nice positive that won't matter to everyone is that A&P has a small section at the front of the store to leave your bike. This is just really nice and a time saver for folks who would otherwise have to lock up their bike, go in the store for 10 minutes, and unlock it and saffle up afterward. The folks running the place didn't have to make their interior available to bikers but they did and I appreciate it. read more

This is our corner store. Some people just buy liquid here. We go here when we don't want to give up our parking spot. It's a bit overpriced, but for the convenience it's worth it. Last time I ran in here I came in to pick up bleach. They had a mini bottle that held me over till I drove somewhere. This time I came in for milk and creamer. I couldn't believe it they don't sell creamer. I understand they wouldn't have all the fancy flavors, but I would have hoped they would have the plain kind. They do have milk, string cheese, and a variety of other things in their refrigerator case. In the back they also have things such as cat food, toilet paper, and lighter fluid. They also have energy drinks, soda, tea, and other cold beverages. In the front they have ice cream bars. This is a very nice store with a friendly owner and security guard. read more

I've only been to this location 4 times to get my bf different choices of beer. The gentleman that owns the store I believe is always there and is very helpful!! I choose to not drink alcohol so my knowledge on beer is very slim. I told him what my bf likes and he should me a lot of options! Every visit was a new adventure of knowledge.
