I've always wanted to find a place that served hot Indian food to-go where it's already prepped. I found out about this place on Reddit, and have decided to check out Cottage Mart. It's my first time here and when walking in, one of the store staff (I think owner?) was taking professional photos with a banner that says something like "now serving Java City coffee". They were busy promoting their store and it was nice to see that! The store is like a mini mart with lots of snacks, everyday items, toiletries, toys, medicine, drinks, etc. They also have a section of the store where it's a bar area and quite a few people were in there! The store is clean and stocked with items. They have a hot food section, ice cream freezer, and fridgerated food (sandwiches, deli items) up at the front counter for easy access/ordering. I didn't find any pricing specifically for the to-go plate food (there were pricing for containers), but it was a decent price! The price in total was around $11-12 for the plate of food and ice cream (which was $2.99), totaling my order to be around $15. I got the chicken tikka plate with double chicken tikka (they called it sides, so technically I ordered two sides of chicken tikka masala), rice, and naan. I didn't get to take a picture of the plate, but it was a good portion and very filling! The chicken tikka masala was more on the creamy side, not much spice, but still was delicious. I was very pleased. I'd come back again! There was another staff member (I think owner as well) there who provided me great customer service and informed me how Cottage mart has been here for over 40 years! I was surprised it's my first time hearing about this place. It's a very underrated spot. read more

She ripped me off on purpose. Didn't give me much food. As I sat there and ate disappointed thinking of all the other places I could have ate for a better price. I walked by a group of other people eating at a table and noticed that they were given WAY more food than I got. I was also charged almost $15 just for a little bit of rice and chicken tikka. I was supposed to be charged less than that! Looks like another person just acting nice. Do you know there are all you can eat Indian buffets that charge less than $20?! Wow! Been in the business for how many years?! Looks like they specialize in being nice to rip you off. Giving everyone else more food it seems like you don't like your people or yourself. read more

Cottage Mart is a clean, efficient market with delicious Indian food. Eugene, the owner was beyond helpful in my all too embarrassing spillage of tikka masala sauce on my dress shirt. He gave me a wet and dry towel and went in the back and offered me a brand new dress shirt of his own he happened to have. An unbelievable stroke of humanity before my business meeting. Elmhurst is the cutest neighborhood I've ever seen, and a convenience store is the last thing you'd expect to see dropped right into the middle of it! Once you lay eyes on Cottage Mart though, you'll realize this is more than a convenience store AND understand why it has survived in this location for more than 30 years. We found Cottage Mart on Yelp and then stumbled on it accidentally during a walk. The photos of the Indian food on Yelp looked outrageous, so seeing as they were open, we had to pop in to see what was on the menu. Apparently the trick is to get in here at lunch because the line was already cleaned up around early dinner time. The owner was nice enough to check in the back and see what was available for us and we got to try their eggplant dish. It was absolutely delish and the perfect pre-dinner snack for our stroll. On the convenience store side of things, the shop is pretty basic, but there's a nice seating area in the back and a great patio outside, making this a sweet spot to hang with friends. People who live here are lucky to have this in their neighborhood. I wish we had a Cottage Mart in Reno! read more

This is a great little market. They have great coffee drinks...lattes, mochas, etc... I love the Indian food. There are fresh sandwiches, like roast beef and turkey. The baklava is great. They also have the regular mini market items (bread, some canned goods, cookies, chilled sodas...). Feel like getting your ping pong game on? Look no further. They have a ping pong table in the store. Feel like a lovely afternoon and chatting with friends? Found this gem of a spot by accident on my lunch!!! It's located in a residential area and has some great Indian and Pakistani food. The Tikka Masala is delicious. It's actually a little store , the cleanest and neatest as well. They have a beautiful area outside to eat surrounded by beautiful plants and flowers. I definitely recommend this place. Every time I pass by this neighborhood bodega, I keep saying that I want to see what they have. I finally got the chance to see what they had to offer yesterday. I was surprised to learn that this store has been around since 1984. It is as off the beaten trail as you can get in East Sac, so unless you live in the neighborhood or work at the hospital you wouldn't know this place exists. This is a full fledged bodega with a good beer and wine selection, some produce and things you typically find in a convenience store, but what really stands out is their food options. They offer sandwiches and Indian food. I am a sucker of Indian food, so this is what we tried. Their menu is limited, but what they offer is really good. We had their chicken Tikka, with rice and channa masala along with some samosas. Their Tikka sauce is a bit thinner than other places, think Pooja or Kathmandu kitchen, but still really good. Their samosas were better than I have had at other Indian Restaurants. The filling was well seasoned and the outside was crispy. As many have stated the staff is really friendly and welcoming. I spent a few minutes speaking with Das, the gentleman behind the counter running the register, and got on the subject of spicy food. He let me try his home made hot sauce and holy crap. It's hot, but so damn flavorful that it is worth the few minutes of spicy bliss. I really liked the heat it packed up front and most of all how that hot spice did not linger beyond enjoyment like other hot sauces do. If you really like spicy food, ask about his moms secret hot sauce. I highly recommend it. read more

I walked in seeking corn nuts. I left an hour later with knowledge of an interesting man's life and considerable improvement on my ping pong game. Cottage is a quaint little market located in the sleepy Elmhurst neighborhood. It's the last place I expected to find a corner store with friendly service and a wide selection of amenities, but then again the geographic diversity of Sacramento's businesses has never ceased to amaze me. Unlike many a market downtown, you'll be immediately impressed by the friendliness and openness of the family who runs it. Take the time to chat with the colorful owner Eugene about his life and experiences and you'll see what puts the "neighborhood" in neighborhood market. On my visit I asked about the ping pong table in back and he said he occasionally allows guests to come down and play. After asking what I was up to the rest of the afternoon, we ended up casually playing between customers for close to an hour while he regaled me with stories about his past, ties to the neighborhood, beliefs and how he has owned the shop for 21 years. As a new resident in the neighborhood, I left feeling glad that I had engaged this man and learned more about this business. It just goes to show that behind every store is a story, and this story is one of the more fascinating. read more

We've driven by this little market and read about the take out food for a while now. Finally, a chance to taste the food. We swung by on a Friday afternoon after work to pick up some Indian food for a ready made dinner. The owner greeted us and answered our questions about the drill and what the dishes are. We picked a vegetarian combo with chana and okra with rice and naan and a chicken tikka and eggplant combo with rice and naan. We also got a couple of samosas. While we were getting our food, the owner was bantering with his wife about testing out her cooking. She told us that she just doesn't make food as spicy as he does. They are a fun couple and were very friendly. The food was delicious and plentiful. We could've shared one combo between the two of us, but we ate the combos and the samosas, no problem. All that was less than $20. So wish we lived in the neighborhood, but we're not too far away!! read more

This place is awesome! I came here for the baklava and oh my goodness, it was SO good!!! I came here because of the yelp reviews. There were 3 different kinds, the traditional, a fruity flavored one and chocolate. The chocolate was my favorite! The owner and his daughter were there and they were SO friendly! A breath of fresh air! The owner asked me if I had ever tried a Samosa and he told me about the 3 item special, it came with 3 items & rice, just $4.49! I don't often get to come here since I changed to graveyard shift, but this local institution is the best corner market because of the delicious food, variety of goods and the most wonderful friendly owners! Don't hesitate to come here for lunch when you have a chance--swing for a tasty meatloaf sandwich on potato bread or a fantastic chicken tikka masala with naan. Cute mart nestled on the corner with a nice patio for seating. Pleasant service. I was hoping to order a sandwich but none were made that day. I ordered: Chicken tikka masala - sauce was really watery. Bland dish. Ground chicken with peas - bland and a bit too mushy Vegetable samosa - soggy, barely warm, tastier than the other dishes but still not that great. Naan - was not naan. Instead, a thick, stiff bread. Family-run mart serving homemade Indian and Pakistani food! I had driven by the Cottage Mart many times, admired the cute building, and thought "I really want to go in there some day." Now that I live in the neighborhood, I'm there at least once a week. Cottage Mart carries the usual convenience store stuff but there's much more to it. The owners bring in a buffet of Indian food, including Chana Masala, a spicy Eggplant Curry (my favorite!), Chicken Tikka Masala, Samosas, and more. The lunch plate is a choice of two entrees and comes with rice and naan. The price is $6.99 or $7.99, depending on whether you go veggie or order meat dishes, or you can order a la carte. Cottage Mart has sandwiches, as well. Not the suspicious ones you can pick up at convenience stores - actual sandwiches made of actual food. The deli case offers other goodies, like macaroni salad, potato salad, and baklava. I guess this is more of a general store, like in the good old days, because Cottage Mart also serves as a post office and notary. There's a lovely back patio, complete with lots of greenery and a ping pong table. Check it out and if you don't like it, that's fine because that means more delicious Indian food and Noah's Almond Sparkling Water for me. read more

I love this place, it's not a convenience store, it's a local neighborhood market where everyone knows your name. They have a better than average beer selection and if you don't see your favorites on the shelf, there's a notepad at the register and he'll write them down and look into getting them for you. In the front of the store is a cold case with fresh sandwiches and even baklava, and to the right of that is a row of hot plates where freshly made Indian food is offered. If you're not in a hurry, grab some food and go out back where you can enjoy your food at one of the patio tables in relaxing and quiet oasis-like setting. This cute little place is one second away from my house. I went here the day after we moved to Sacramento to get a coffee, some bread, and a cheese and meat packaged set. The prices are a little more than the grocery store but it's really convenient and the owners are friendly and chatty. I often see people sitting with a coffee or a sandwich in the small fenced-in area next to the store. There are several tables and chairs and lots of plants for a quick relaxing lunch. I usually send my husband over there to get some wine for dinner. They have a pretty good selection and the owner says he gets the bottles directly from the wine vineyards, which may or may not be true. read more

This is one of those old school corner stores that has pretty much everything in it. You're talking about drinks you can get yourself, lunch, good beer, and so much more. They have some local beers. They have wine so pretty much anything you need they have it. Great service as well and the owners Eugen and his wife are one of those really cool owners they will talk to you and see how you're doing and they'll try to help you out if you have any questions with pretty much anything. This is a really cool down-to-earth place. If you are in the area and you need to stop by and grab something real fast or you're just stacking up and some snacks for your road trip this is a great place to pull over even though it's a little bit away from the freeway. It's worth the drive and you can get some great beer...better than you could at your local gas station. read more

One of my favorites markets in Sac. Nestled away behind the UCD med center, they have a fantastic selection of grocery items, but the deli part of the store is the best. The sandwiches and salads are top notch, but the Indian food is outstanding. Grab a bottle of craft beer, a plate of rice and saag and head for the cozy patio out front. Got take out Indian food for lunch today, and it was excellent. 2-item vegetarian plate (which also includes rice and bread) for $6.99. I wish I could remember the name of the first item: a yellow-white sauce with some sort of dumplings/fritters and olives, which was the perfect level of spicy (the proprieter warned me it was a little spicy) and very tasty. I also had the saag, which was delicious. But I noticed they also had some Indian/Pakistani food that was reasonably priced. I ordered the meat special? Which came with tiki masala and something else I can't remember, rice and some bread. They owners were extremely friendly and welcoming. Once I purchased, the owner told me about the patio outside. I ended up making my way back there, which turned out to be a beautiful, well kept, full of shade, patio. The food turned out to be wonderful.
