Bonnaroo is a one-of-one festival experience. Although the majority of people camp, my friends and I dropped in for just one day of shows. We got to see some outstanding acts this year (Friday, 2026) like The Strokes. Food and drink can get really expensive. Which is to be expected. My friends and I frequented the $5 mystery beer tent, which was often not beer, but tallboys of wine. Food could get pricey, but we were only there for one day, so we balled out. If you're there for the whole weekend and camping, you can bring plenty of your own food to help alleviate this cost. This was my second time going, first since 2019, and the magic was still there. It's kinda comforting to see people letting it all hang out. The kids are gonna be alright, I think. Weather seems to be a recurring issue for the festival. It was beautiful but a bit muddy the day we were there. I heard there were some rain delays and even more mud later on in the weekend. Some of this is par for the course. I do think they would be wise to pick a different time of year. read more

2024 was my second year on The Farm attending Bonnaroo - what a unique and fun time! Comparatively, this festival is huge and well organized. The lineups are solid, there's a wide variety of vendors (food, snacks, arts, etc), and the layout of stages is good. The organizers have put a lot of work into improving the fest based on feedback, which is appreciated. read more

I have been to several large festivals, and Bonnaroo is definitely high on my list of favorites! Being from Michigan, the drive was really not too bad. Overall, it was 9 hours one way. I went to a couple friends, and we left early enough that we could stop halfway at a hotel both there and back. This is also one of the largest festivals that hasn't increased their prices a crazy amount! At least for me, it was among the more affordable options. My GA 4-day ticket was just over $400. I was able to put it on layaway, too. The camping are is HUGE. Like we got there Thursday, and people had been arriving since Tuesday, putting us at the very very end of GA camping. Our walk to Centeroo was maybe 2-2.5 miles/ 40 ish minutes. So it definitely gave us an opportunity for us to get our steps in! The Tennessee heat and humidity is something very different than what I'm used to, so just be prepared for that! Also be prepared for rain, just in case. Centeroo was awesome! The stages were very cool, but the names were annoying: This stage, That stage, Which Stage, What Stage, etc. made things quite confusing sometimes. The activities they held during the day were very much like those at other festivals including yoga and workshops. There was a giant water slide as well as Pride parades and a Ferris wheel. Other than the heat, I had such a wonderful time! I love festivals, and I'm not sure I would go back just because I'd like to go to other ones in the future, but if you like festivals, you'd love this one! read more

The music is always on point. Love camping with 75,000 other people . The food trucks are awesome! You have to do the Ferris wheel to get a view of what exactly you got yourself into. What a joke. Disorganized doesn't even begin to describe it. Inconsistent staff..... one says you can come thru a gate, next time you get harassed. I was camping with an artist and was not treated well at all. After they called the festival, we walked around centeroo and they wouldn't let us back to our area to our buses. This is worth the money! Go live your best life and see all the amazing musicians! Yes it is pricey, but based on all the great music you will hear is worth every penny! We got a daily car pass, and drove in everyday. I don't think I would be a happy camper. They had bike carts that would drive you too and from the entrance and day parking. It was $15 a person. Worth it at night after a day of walking and dancing. The food and drinks were pricey, but you just have to look around for the best bang for your buck. Trust me you can get some good food that won't completely break the bank. The stage names are pretty confusing, since they are What stage, which stage, that tent, this tent, the other tent, and who stage. I mean it's pretty clever but also confusing when you've been drinking. Which stage did sound a little off for any musician, but all the others sounded amazing! They double book constantly then you are left sitting for minimum of 40 mins even when you ask for first appointment of the day!! They have scheduled appointment for services only to show up and be told there was insurance issue and need to be rescheduled! If I could give no stars I would!! read more

Bonnaroo is life. The good the bad. Take four days for yourself. A vacation for your soul to put life in perspective. Live in the moment and don't sweat the small stuff. Radiate positivity. That being said A LOT of things determine the time you'll have on the farm. KNOW the Bonnaroo code. Don't be an ass. Prepare yourself to live out of your car/tent for four days etc. be kind to your neighbor. Don't be that guy/gal. Good rules for being a human on this planet to be honest. Went for the first time in 2014 and it was amazing. Second runner up in a radio contest in 2015 and did groop camping and that was a blast. Different lineups each year. Different camping situations and vibes. But I really cannot say enough good things about this festival. Of course things change but that's a good thing. And I could write on here for hours. My trip from Long Island promised to be... Long and interesting to say the least, and boy was it. All part of the fun. I played my normal night of beach volleyball and waited for my buddy to get off work, scooped him up and set out for the drive. Decided to cut through Manhattan when he said he needed food-- this is where the adventure truly began, not just on the farm. Grabbed a burger at the bar in midtown truly set the tone of the trip to come when a Russian man visiting for conventions throughout the states, started buying us shots of vodka. Knowing full well it was already after 10 and we had an 18 hr drive ahead, we insisted after we bought him one that we were done.... One more, he said. Okay. One more. They were closing the bar when we left on that Wednesday night... Man was that a hard drive, state after state when all you need is sleep, packed out SUV so you can't really recline... Made for a few interesting stops for rest. We slept in more parking lots than you could imagine, and drank more energy drinks too. We thought once we made it into Tennessee we'd hit a liquor store quick and instead decided to crash at a real shady hotel for just a couple hours as we were zombies at that point. When we finally got back on the road, we counted our blessings to be alive, discussed our many adventures on the road, and pumped up the volume on the way to the farm just another couple hours away. When you go to Bonnaroo, you really don't go straight in, you meet up at wallaroo (Walmart just off the main highway) with all the friends you've got going, and all the friends you've met years prior. You meet more and you pop some lawn chairs pick up some essentials wait it out a while, either until the lies die down, or you think it's time to go. We left the lot and the exit sorta let us off right in front of the very very long line. We were searched quickly for banned items and made our way to our camp site. We really lucked out, we were right next to VIP and the campers. Not much of a walk for us to get anywhere, and we had some real cool people to camp around, or entire row got to know eachother a little and the girls we were meeting up with got the spot right behind us. You will meet people from all over, I now know a couple from Ohio who's wedding I attended, I know a girl in Cali, Tennessee, and Michigan; met a bunch of dudes and remained Facebook friends from Canada, I wouldn't give that experience up for the world. We ended our trip driving even further through jack Daniels distillery to New Orleans.... It was just that amazing time in life that Bonnaroo inspires- The lineups get worse every year but if you are debating going, GO. Make it epic. Make memories! Music festivals are life! You haven't lived until you've gone to one. Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival is located in sunny Manchester, Tennessee. About an hour drive south of Nashville sits this amazing music festival. I came back in 2016 when Pearl Jam headlined. They were the main reason I traveled halfway across the country! Aside from them, I also got to check out Macklemore, LCD Soundsystem, Halsey, Tame Impala and many more. They have at least 6 stages. The Kalliope stage was by far the loudest, as they boast some of EDM's hottest acts. That year The Chainsmokers played. They also had other fun activities, such as their comedy tent with local and famous comedians, a silent disco and arts displayed throughout the park. Bonnaroo also has theme park rides, including their famous Ferris wheel. They have various food options, their most famous being their spicy pie, otherwise known as pizza. By far the best thing I ate here was their Maryland crab cakes. Yummy! It was my first time eating them. They have porta-potties throughout the venue. Beware as they do get full of long lines! This music festival takes place the second weekend of June. It runs for 4 days, usually from Thursday to Sunday. Parking is beyond plentiful, but can be a hassle to get out of. The drive in the countryside to get here is just breathtaking. This is one of the more affordable music festivals to attend;its pricing isn't as expensive as Coachella or EDC. Bonnaroo has been the biggest music festival in Tennessee for the last 17 years. There are plenty of places to stay nearby, but they do tend to get filled up quickly. I recommend staying in nearby Tullahoma, as it is a nearby drive here. I am bummed that I'm gonna miss Bonnaroo this year. Can a 61 year old man enjoy the Bonnaroo Music Festival? Hell yes, but it will take planning, commitment and discipline. Get the "farm fresh meal" plan which provides lunch and dinner Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Go platinum if you can afford it, when you're 61 you have much different needs than when you're 24. If you can't afford to go platinum. Then go VIP. Bonnaroo is a camping music festival. So I took my RV, and bought the very expensive 30 amp power package. For me and not everyone, the power package is worth every penny. The farm fresh lunch and dinner package is worth every penny. And stupidly expensive platinum package is worth every penny. The real secret is write your schedule every morning which includes, the bands and times you want to see them, adequate times so that you can eat, adequate times so you can shower twice a day, and rest time from the sweltering heat. When your body says you want to stay in bed, get up, get dressed, and start walking to your first band. You have to move or you will never move. Take that from me because that was my issue. At the time your body says no, you must be disciplined and just get up and go. If you do my suggestions, Bonnaroo will be an experience you will remember for a very long time. Enjoy read more

Bonnaroo is a blast. Make sure you go a year when it is a lineup you enjoy, but don't just stray from camp for the headliners. You are bound to discover music you've never heard before from any number of music genres. This is my second year coming here with close friends. There are free public water stations around the farm. It's Tennessee in mid June. It's hot. Drink lots of water. There are lots of places to buy beer, wine, soda, bottled water, Gatorade, etc. You can also get margaritas and mixed drinks in a few spots. There are a plethora of delicious food options. I found the crab cakes and chicken kebabs to be outstanding. There are bacon flights. You get 4 pieces of 3 kinds of bacon. Let that sink in. The pulled pork sandwich was standard, not amazing, but juicy and flavorful. The slaw on top of the pork was a pretty standard afair, but the two paired well. There a giant pig shaped BBQ named Hamageddon where you can see and SMELL that delicious while pig cooking. VIP is worth it if you like the lounges with free WiFi, A.C., better beverage choices, and lots of comfy furniture to relax on. You also get a better camping ground. Bonnaroo is an experience. You could come here knowing no musician or band playing, and leave having had a glorious time. Have fun, meet people, listen to lots of music, eat delicious food, be good to each other, and DRINK LOTS OF WATER. That's pretty much Bonnaroo, man. read more

The line-up at Bonnaroo was what enticed us to purchase tickets months in advance and scour all of the airline sites in search of an affordable ticket to Nashville. Bonnaroo boasted an epic list of wowing musicians like Ray LaMontagne, Buffalo Springfield, Alison Kraus, Robert Plant, The Black Keys, STS9 and many more. I did months of research for what I should bring as far as clothes and camping supplies. I bought shuttle tickets - so we wouldn't have to wait in long traffic lines, and made a mental note that the Centeroo Mushroom Fountain's water - though refreshing during the day - wasn't always the cleanest. I couldn't wait for Roo. Couldn't wait to descend into what I imagined would be a crazy adventure of music, hippy-dom, and letting go. We were prepared for the weather, we were prepared for the porta-potties, we were prepared for it all, but once we found ourselves at Bonnaroo - the DFDUBS clan (our festival name) was disappointed at the lack of heart, soul, and quality of the actual festival. I've been to a ton of music festivals, and Bonnaroo was by far one of the most eagerly anticipated as well as one of the most disappointing. The highlight of our Bonnaroo adventure was not the music, it wasn't the art tents, or the air conditioned cinema tent. The highlight for us ended up being our humble make-shift camp area, where we'd retreat to - to escape the overwhelming humidity, billows of dust, and lack-luster festival food. The highlight for us was meeting kind people from all over the states and world. The highlight for us was finding refuge in each other and others, when Centeroo became a crowded sweat box. Despite my issues with Bonnaroo - there were moments of pure musical excellence on that dusty Manchester farm-ground. Buffalo Springfield represented from the past - Neil Young cradled those guitar chords with stirring excellence. Ray LaMongtagne owned the stage with his sweaty harmonica playing. Justin Townes Earle made my knees weak with his guitar picking, and I hula-hooped myself into a stupor to Deerhunter. But those moments of magical music-dom were few, and hard to appreciate during the day- due to the cramped shaded stage areas. During the day at full stages- the peak sun would eat you alive and you had no chance of reveling in the musical musings of Deer Tick and such. At night, many of the much anticipated musical acts were broken up by conflicting stages. Mumford and Sons was drowned out by an early 90's sounding band at the small Miller Sponsored On Tap stage. And the food. Most of the vendor stations were staffed by volunteers, who were eager to get out of the sweltering sun. Many of the food kiosks were giving out meager servings of food, such as a vegetable burrito's - "vegetables" consisted of onions with literally - one piece of squash. We quickly learned that if we wanted quality food we had to go to food vendors that cared - ie - the food-trucks. We became huge fans of EatBox with their eggplant meatball sandwich and their organic popsicles. Though we had a prime camp location right by Centeroo due to arriving Thursday morning, we bounced out a day early. The chaos on Saturday night - with over 125,000 people (yes - well over 125,000 people were at Bonnarroo we learned from one of their staff members) aimlessly stumbling from stage to stage, kicking up dirt and dust, stepping over people, and just out of it - was too much for us. Our deciding "let's get out of here" moment came before Buffalo Springfield, when we found ourselves forced to hang out on the outskirts of a smelly porta-potty area, due to the zombie like masses - trying to move from stage to stage. There was no crowd control and many had looks of horror on their face at the overwhelming chaos. I understand that Bonnaroo is a unique experience. There aren't that many massive camping festivals still around. I just think that those running the Bonnaroo festival should make sure to preserve the integrity of the music watching experience - instead of looking to cram as many people as possible into the Manchester campground. Stages shouldn't musically drown out each other. It's not fair to the musicians or the audience. There should be more shade during the day for outstanding daytime performances. I wish there more healthy and quality eating options. I would have liked to have seen more water stations, have more staff on hand to help with questions, and would have appreciated more mellow acoustic sets at night (maybe small stages intermingled throughout the campgrounds) - for those that wanted a more intimate music experience once the sun went down. I'm glad that I experienced Bonnaroo. It was a crazy whirlwind experience, but it most certainly did not live up to the expectations that I had. Lines were long, and my longing to dance and let go - never fully came to fruition - since I felt that we were in a perpetual struggle to just survive the crowds and the heat. Trust. read more

Yea, I love the roo. It's a bizarre experiment of music, movies, comedy and 80k+ people in 85+ heat, but somehow it works amazingly well. Yes, there are 100+ amazing bands, which is redic awesome, but the experience really comes from hanging and camping with a complete bunch of strangers. Everyone is dirty, dehydrated and sleep deprived, but all manage to rally together to make it, dare I say, comfortable? If you can handle the long drive from LI and are cool in general with shenanigans...go. It will be a trip you never forget. Well, at least until July... :D Tip: Go VIP if you can spare the cash. Lots of camping room, short walk to the main stage, AC'd bathrooms and showers, comfy viewing area of the What and Which stages and a speedy initial entrance to the campground. read more

I love the 'Roo. I really really do. I even proved myself by camping for 4 days (a feat that I have never accomplished before) while showering in communal shower areas and wearing flat shoes too. That's what this broad calls true love y'all! Stellar shows ranged from The Temper Trap, Santigold, Chidish Gambino, The Avett Brothers, Skrillex, Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, Fun, Young The Giant, Alice Cooper, The Roots and The Beach Boys, to headliners like Radiohead and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. And yes, I saw many more. I also appreciated the many veg-friendly options in Centeroo and in the Food Truck Oasis. I happily noshed on Drunken Noodles ($7), 2 fried avocado tacos and chips and salsa ($19), and a veggie burger ($8) too. The people watching is part of the allure as you venture through 700 acres that host 10 stages and 150 shows. In addition, some stand out areas included the Silent Disco tent, Adult Swim carnival area, lovely ferris wheel ($6), and Planet Roo. The lines for restrooms and showers were not bad at all as they had more than enough to go around. We camped in the Guest RV area and loved being so close to everything! As someone who only went to Bonnaroo last year for the first time and only for a 24 hour period of time, you truly miss out on taking in the whole experience unless you stay for the entirety. I met new friends and ran into old ones too while having one of the best times that I have had in a long time! Did I mention that the weather was beautiful most of the time? No scorching hot heat to slow us down. We experienced a bit of rain on Sunday but nothing that could stop the party from going on. My only complaint is that clearly At+T doesn't have a cell tower anywhere near or the current one is weak because I lacked service 90% of the time I was there. This certainly causes a major inconvenience if you are attempting to meet up with friends throughout your stay or want to do some live updates to your social media. Tip: 20 pound Ice bags can be purchased for $7 on the grounds and don't pack any glass in your coolers too! read more

The Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival, simply known as Roo or the Farm is 4 days of musical performances, entertainment, comedy and other activities held at the beginning of June. Genres of the artists and bands performing on one of the 10 plus stages range from pop, hip/hop, rock, folk and country. The festival is located in Manchester which is an hour south of Nashville and in the Tennessee countryside. Centeroo is the heart of the music festival grounds which is accessible to the performances and vendors and it is open at all hours of the day. There is a large fountain located centrally on the grounds which can be a good indicator of where you are and of course being used to cool off from the Summer heat. Highlights: -The music of course! The year we went (2015..yes this review is way overdue) Mumford & Sons was headlining, which they are one of my favorite bands. The more you connect with the bands that are playing the more invested you'll be in the whole experience. Discovering new music was also a highlight as I listened to some I had never heard of before. -The Silent Disco was one of the coolest things I did at the festival. After getting a pair of noise-cancelling headphones you can feel free to rock out to the music playing. It looks so funny to watch people dancing to nothing as there is no music playing except for the headphones. -Snake & Jake's Christmas Club Barn had fun dance music and cheerful, holiday decor. -Face painting: Our final day at 'Roo we got some sweet designs to rock -The Oasis: This was an area that felt like a beach with a tiki bar and a DJ -The food: There were so many options and ones that catered towards vegetarians/vegans as well which was nice to have such a selection Tips: -If you won't be camping then plan a hotel room far in advance. We ended up staying in Shelbyville then driving to the festival each day which worked fine for us because we wanted to do other sightseeing in the morning/early afternoon each day before going to the festival. -If you are driving and not camping make sure you are responsible as there are police checkpoints -Wear comfortable sandals or shoes as you will be doing a lot of walking! I wore a pair of hiking sandals which was perfect. -Stay hydrated in the Summer heat! They have free water refill stations so you can bring empty water bottles in then keep refilling throughout the day. -Subscribe to their online newsletter for updated information -Checkout 'The Code' on their website--festival goers are happy, not aggressive and carefree which is what makes the festival work so well! Bonnaroo was one of my favorite experiences I've had for music festivals. There is so much to do besides just listening to music which really makes it unique. At $300+ (incl. fees) for a general admission 4 day pass it may seem like a lot of money to drop but it is worth it. I would highly recommend it to anyone! read more

Raised in East, TN. Went to my last Roo in 2011. I left early because of the constant bad vibes from cops kept reverberating amongst everyone. The years before I was aggressively searched while walking to my campsite, twice, under made up pretexts. They threw away a bunch of shit and gave me a citation for one thing but my god, they literally have multiple cops and other employed security yell in your face, instantly confusing you in order trick you into complying. If you go and experience this I would strongly suggest walking past them and just acting like you don't see or hear them. You have no idea who these people are. They could of gotten a badge and a uniform from anywhere and snuck it into camp to rob people with. All they would have to do is state the county you're in and a local sheriff's department. Such a disappointment, it was such a lovely festival long ago. read more

I would have to write a book on explaining how awesome Bonnaroo is. I don't think there's any festival like it. I first attended two years ago ('13) and I was so hooked! I went back again the next year but this year I skipped out for various reasons. I regret it, but there's always next year, right? I'm not sure where to start. It's pretty much a festival for those who love: music, great food, music, craft beer, music, rides, music, dancing, well you get the idea! There's always something to do and something for everyone at Bonnaroo. I understand many people who attended the festival in its early years are disgusted how much it has transformed, but I say its for the best. I, for one, am glad how much it has diversified while staying true to its roots as a jam-band/hippie festival. You'll be meeting people from all over the country, even from Canada! The camping part is also fun, no matter where you are. It's always a happy atmosphere! If you do go to the festival in the future, here's what should be on your list: 1) eat the spicy pie (you'll know what I'm talking about when you're there!) 2) drink at least two brews at the 'Broo tent 3) spend at least an hour in the Comedy tent 4) spend at least an hour in the Silent Disco 5) ride the Ferris Wheel 6) see a band you never heard of in one of the smaller stages at Centeroo 7) actually, see as many bands you've never heard of as much as possible 8) dance and eat pizza at the Christmas barn 9) browse Centeroo and fill out the Census 10) write on the graffiti wall And just be sure to follow the rules, and the Bonnaroovian code. Bonnaroo is more than just a festival. It's a lifestyle. It's a state of mind. Suited to some people, entirely not suited to others. I am in the first camp. This year was my first (and hopefully not the last) Roo. And aside from one small incident, it was quite possibly the best weekend of my summer, if not the year. We were blessed with fairly good weather all weekend, until the heat came on sunday. But it wasn't oppressively hot and you could find shade if you needed it. If we go again, we know to bring a canopy for shade at our campground, but for our first time there, we were pretty well prepared thanks to Reddit and adivce from other friends. The food trucks provided amazing food options. The stages were far enough away from each other that they didn't interfere with each other. There was a fantastic, varied, line up. And for the sheer mass of people who were there in attendance, there were very few unpleasant incidents that I heard of. It was an amazing time, and as long as the line up interested me, I would have no issue going back. Well worth the money. That said, if you are *not* a camping person or a festival person, assume you are going to hate it. It's a 4 day long, outdoor music festival in Tennessee in June. It's going to be hot and humid and sticky. And if you can't put up with that for a few days, don't go. read more

Bonnarooooooooooooooo!!! My first time here in 2015 and I absolutely loved it. What a great experience!!! It is really a bit hard to describe, but I think overall the people of Bonnaroo are what make it so special. Anyone you start a conversation with is basically an instant friend. The folks that organize the event have it dialed in pretty well. I have a love/hate relationship with Bonnaroo. The positives: 24-hour access to music, camping, no laws give it a Wild West kind of feel, the isolation from the outside world gives you room to contemplate life, everybody smells as bad as you, seeing famous people playing in the same fountain you watched a couple have sex in the night before, getting asked by somebody's grandpa if you know where to buy mushrooms, walking around Centeroo at night allows you to see zombies tripping on acid with their grotesquely dilated pupils. The negatives: Too many people, schedule conflicts, 100 degree oppressing heat with little to no shade anywhere on property, people who steal your stuff, lines, toilets overflowing with feces that will make any sketchy gas station bathroom seem pristine, the lack of security means you truly do have to rely on the kindness of strangers (including those who will help themselves to your tent while you're away), and neverending lines to do anything, even take a dump. Stripped of basic needs like a shower and soap, you truly are free to wander without judgement. I'll never forget standing at an Edward Sharpe show and feeling so free and happy that tears streamed down my face (this was before the dehydration kicked in). This is not a moment I would have experienced at a venue in my hometown. Because so many people (80,000+) show up and the space and facilities are limited, you really have to leave behind impatience. A car is also important as the heat can make you very ill and you may need a few hours of air-conditioning to recover. The HEAT in 2010 was nothing like I'd ever experienced and, really, that was the only deal-breaker. Uncomfortable heat magnifies problems, the main one being the stench that hangs over the farm due to unwashed bodies and baking turds. When you're at camp wanting to see Phoenix but the heat has gripped hold of your will to move, you wonder why they can't move this festival to October. How about it, Bonnaroo? Doesn't October sound lovely? By day 4, after being surrounded by people inhaling nitrous and disgusting facilities, I was ready for The Real World again. Caked in dirt with only the dress I was wearing (as every other possession of mine had been stolen from my camp), I stopped at the Manchester Wal-Mart to use the bathroom. It was littered with toilet paper and the largest stall was covered in urine, but at that moment it was the cleanest bathroom I'd ever seen. When I reached home that night, I lay in bed and thought how nice it was to be on a real mattress and not in fear that somebody could crash in while I slept. Bonnaroo makes you appreciate the things that you take for granted, but after a while you are reminded that the Real World is boring. You start to miss the anarchy. Bonnaroo isn't a concert, it isn't an event, it's a state of mind. I am a type A, neat freaky kind of person and was absolutely terrified of camping for four days straight. I was terrified of the crowds, terrified of the heat, terrified of wait to get in, terrified of walking a mile from the campground. But I think I was most terrified of letting go of the control I keep over my life. The first rule of Bonnaroo is Be Prepared. Yep, I was that. Bring TONS of water, bring tons of booze, bring tons of sunscreen bring snacks. A lot of people fix meals at their site, but I suggest just buying food as you go along. You won't spend much more and it takes TONS of stress off you. The second rule is Be In There. I had no clue what that meant until Friday morning. My cell phone didn't have signal from Thursday on. I ran out of my prepared food and had to start buying stuff. Any semblance of order I had planned was gone. Normally this would put me in freak-out mode, but this time I learned to stop worrying and love the bomb-aroo. My husband and I spread our mat out beneath a tree and closed our eyes and listened to music for four days straight. When the shade ran out, we'd move our mat to the edge of it, wait 15 minutes, and then we were back in it. When we were hungry, we'd grab some awesome munchies. We literally did nothing except decide what shows we wanted to see (and with the awesome line-up, it was a tough decision). We made friends with whoever was next to our mat, people that I hope to keep in touch with for a long time. We're already making plans for next year with our camp-mates, people we'd never met before. The atmosphere at Bonnaroo is so friendly and chill it's nearly impossible not to get swept up in the spirit. Even if you're taking daily showers, you're still a filthy wreck, surviving long waits at the watering holes, long waits to get into anywhere with beer, dusty (or muddy) crowds to get to each show. Everyone there is stripped of rank, of clique, of ego and you're just EXISTING. Everyone is in this experience together. I wish I could describe this feeling better, but I've never had it anywhere other than Bonnaroo. It's been over a week since the last day of Bonnaroo, but I still have my "Bonnaroo Buzz." My outlook on life has changed; I have lost a lot of my cynicism. After all, if 80k people can survive Centeroo in relative harmony, how can the human race be so bad? The world speeds along without you for four days, but inside your tiny bubble, you learn to redefine what life really is and what you want to get out of it. I can't wait until next year. read more

Roo! What is there to say? Bonnaroo is the most fun you can have in Tennesee with your pants on...or your bathing suit, tu-tu, star wars costume or crushed velvet suit. It's a 4 day stretch when freaks come from every corner of the world to play and enjoy world class musicians. You get out what you put into Roo. If you want to come party, you will find thousands of like minded people armed to the teeth with an arsenal of basically every substance under the sun. If you want to come just to enjoy music, you are in good company. The 80,000 or so people are here to have a good time, and you will find yourself in a very accepting environment. The music is diverse - touching on all of the major genres - and the level of talent they bring in is very high. Outside of music, you can find some awesome things to do. You can ride the ferris wheel, jump into the cinema tent to escape the brutal TN sun, catch a comedian or party in the silent disco until the break of dawn. The food is not your typical festival fare. It's actually really good. This last trip, I stuffed myself to the gills on samosas, drunken noodles, arepas, kabobs and various breakfast foods. I never had something that I didn't like. I've been in the RVs and in tent city and have enjoyed both. I would highly recommend bringing chairs and a tarp or easy-up type tent. You will want a place to escape the sun while you are at your campsite. The shows typically start in the early afternoon, but it starts getting hot around 9AM. One heads up: I see people bring families every year. Guys: please know what you are getting into before bringing your children to a music festival. They will be exposed to drugs, possible nudity, deafeningly loud music, and all manner of deviant activity. Everyone else: buckle up and enjoy the ride. read more

If Bonnaroo ever comes up in conversation with anyone, I always tell them the same thing: go once. At least once. Before you die. This year will be my 4th time going to Bonnaroo. If you're remotely interested in the line-up and can handle four days of camping, don't think twice. Go. There are a bunch of music festivals out there, but Bonnaroo provides the most eclectic line-up of musicians and the most varied schedule of things to do I've ever seen. (This year's headliners include Eminem and Arcade Fire. Random, much?) Bonnaroo can be one of the happiest, coolest experiences of your life, whether you go with three friends or thirty. Everyone is there to have a good time, and (mostly) everyone does. That said, the festival is not for the faint of heart. Yes, it can be scorching hot or muddy and rainy like that scene in The Notebook. Yes, our tent had collapsed and flooded when we got back to the campsite at 4am the last night of our first year there. Yes, the porta-potties are usually nasty unless you know how to synchronize your bowel movements (hint: bathroom cleanup is at 6am - wake up early and go!). The campsite my friends and I got our first year (2008) was a five-minute walk from Centeroo, the area where the action happens. Last year, it was more like a 25-minute walk. You have to know when to get there and be ready for the four-hour line (if not longer) on the highway median. Getting a good camping spot is sheer luck, but my experience has been that if you're in line by 9am on Thursday, you're good. Bonnaroo is like a transient commune dedicated to music and arts. It's become my annual respite from the mostly-pretentious place that is Miami. Four days of not showering. (Paying $7 for a baby to pee on you--which is what the showers feel like--is not worth it.) Four days of relaxing, enjoying your favorite music and DELICIOUS food. (Garlic grilled cheese and pesto mozzadillas. Need I say more?) Four days of meeting people from all over and hearing new artists. The icing on the cake is that there are a million and one things to do unrelated to watching live music. There are a ton of free classes (sustainable gardening, belly dancing, yoga), the Comedy Tent (Conan went last year), the (air-conditioned!!!) Bonnaroo Cinema... Whether you have an amazing, decent or shitty experience, one thing is for sure: there is nothing like Bonnaroo. read more

Bonnaroo is epic - and intense - a temporary camp-city of 80,000 over 4 days in the middle of Tennessee. I love the diversity of artists playing at Roo! Paul McCartney, Kendrick Lamar, Alt-J, R-Kelly, A$AP Rocky, Jack Johnson, Bjork, Animal Collective, Foals, etc. Say whaaaa?!?! Things happen at festivals that don't/wouldn't happen at other concert venues, like guest appearances, fireworks, R.Kelly actually releasing dove balloons for "I Can Fly", or a furry grinding up on you for a few minutes, blacking out, then coming to with a dance move... There's heaps of things to do - and I especially like the new euro-style front row areas! Those are badass and make getting up close and personal for your favies a lot easier. If you're going, I'd invest in some cheap hand radios - cellphones die quick and service is spotty. Oh, and camelbacks are key :) read more

Hot. Overcrowded. Expensive. This is how I would describe Bonnaroo in 3 words. Let's start with the cons because complaining is WAY more fun! If they insist on having you set up camp 2 miles away from the nearest stage- at least provide a complimentary shuttle service that does pick up and drop offs throughout the festival. I'm not trying to sound lazy, but walking that in 95 degree humid heat is not my cup of tea. They offer a "Festi-cab" service, golf carts that drive around and stop at certain pick up points if you'd like a ride somewhere, but at the price of $5 a PERSON, this option is only for teens who have nothing better to spend their money on. Get a complimentary shuttle roo! Sheesh. Centeroo was so ridiculously crowded it was unbelievable. You could not navigate without bumping into someone, having someone cut in front of you, or join a mass line moving to the next stage. I really wish the powers that be at Bonnaroo headquarters would cut ticket sales by a third. There is absolutely no room to enjoy yourself at anytime. It was shocking how many people were squeezed into that area. Watching bands on the biggest stage is impossible if you find yourself towards the back. You can't see a thing, you get claustrophobic with the amount of people squished around you, and the sound quality is not the best. I wish they would designate sitting area only and standing area only in the back of the field so when you're trying to sit on your blanket, chill, and enjoy the music- you don't HAVE to stand just to see anything past the turds who decided to stand in front of you... Put the comedy acts on a stage so EVERYONE can enjoy them. Having to wait in line for 3 hours plus for a chance to get a ticket to see a comedy act that I already PAID for in my 4 day pass is ridiculous. Not to mention, who wants to wait out in the hot sun that long and waste half their morning to do so? WAAAAYYY more shade needs to be provided. Like I've stated already, it gets really hot. Obviously. Finding a nice spot to sit in the shade is like HEAVEN when you've been walking around in that dusty heat. Problem is, there is WAY too many hot people and not enough shade. Down to the last leaf of shade on the ground was covered by people looking for relief and other people swarming them looking to squeeze in as well. PROS: Portapotties were cleaner than i thought they'd be. Sure you'll walk into a scary one every once and awhile- but they did a good job of cleaning them regularly. guys, lock the doors! i don't know how many times i walked in on gentlemen PEEING. Water stations were easy to find and relatively quick to use. You could find one easily, whenever you needed to refill your water bottle and the water tasted fine and looked clean. The water stations next to the campsites with the faucets and sinks were easy to find and convenient. Don't bother planning on paying for a shower here (which I NEVER saw by the way)- you can just wash off by one of these stations in your campsite. No problem with lines when I went to these. Some tips for campers: -BRING A SHADE TENT. Your tent will be too hot to sleep in by 9 in the morning. Some kind of shade tent is a lifesaver. You'll find yourself sitting/napping under it a LOT. -BRING SHOES. Walking in flip flops all day will leave your feet sore, blistered, dirty, and achy. It's a long walk people, save the cute stuff for the mall. -Believe it or not- don't bother bringing the max amount of liquor. We brought the max for all 9 people coming with us. We didn't even finish half of it. It's too early/hot to drink during the day, and by the time you make the hot trek to Centeroo- any type of buzz you had is gone. They don't let you bring alcohol into Centeroo- be prepared to shell out $6-7 a beer while you're in there. Yeah...buzzkill.......now I see why so many people do drugs instead- easy to smuggle in! The food that was offered basically consisted of "carnival" food: pizza, gyros, fried oreos, elephant ears and funnel cakes (at a hippy festival???) A little disappointing that they didn't have more local, organic, vegan, fresh sandwich vendors. I saw maybe 2 simple food vendors and they weren't that impressive. The CHEAPEST food I got there was a garlic grilled cheese sandwich. Only $2 flippin bucks. Try to bring your own dry food to eat to save on moolah! Keep in mind- this year was considered "cooler" compared to most years. The news said around 82-87 everyday. But the Real Feel was about 90-93 and humid. I hear other years are considerably hotter than this. I couldn't even imagine.... In my opinion, it would be better to stay home in the AC, invite some friends over, crack a beer, and watch the streamed performances instead. You'd probably have a better view than the people who were there anyways. That or go VIP and get the better viewing and treatment. Probably well worth it....GOOD LUCK! read more

Bonnaroooo...So where else can you find Jimmy Buffet, Bruce Springstein and the E Street Band, Eryka Badu, Phish, Snoop Dog, Beastie Boys, Al Green, and Wilco all appearing on just ONE of the stages at a music festival? Yeahhhh.. no where. I saw about 30 artists.. made my own drum (sanded it, painted it, put the goat skin on, wrapped the rings, help put the strings on, helped with the tension, etcl).. met Don Hertzfeldt.. laughed at Michael Ian Black, Michael Showalter, Margaret Cho, Aziz Ansari, Christian Finnegan, among other comedians.. ate a ton of Greek food (the most consistent and the most bang for your buck).. got some free stuff.. sent some postcards from the Bonnaroo post office on site.. and.. wheww.. what else? Some tips/comments/general things that resemble a review.. ;P I'll probably add an "update" if I remember other things.. but off the top of my head.. -Throw out all your expectations, all your bitching, and seriously just enjoy yourself. Get into it, shake your booty, smile, and relax. You paid a little bit of change to get here, make the most of it. -REMEMBER YOUR TICKET. I forgot mine in Boston (doh!) but I was able to pick up a reprint from Will Call (at a radio station a couple miles from Bonnaroo) the first day of the festival thanks to a lovely man on the MusicToday hotline. -It only took us a half hour to get through the car line, but I heard it took some people 10 hours to get into Bonnaroo's campsite. Be prepared w/a full tank and munchies. -SUNSCREEN, sunglasses, and a hat. The burns that we saw.. ouch, haunt me to this day. -Make sure to bring a tarp for under your tent, otherwise you will get soaked if it rains. You'll probably get wet anyhow, but this will ensure you don't wake up in a puddle. -If you plan on hanging out by your tent at all, SHADE TENT! And investing in one, isn't such a bad idea. We bought ours at WalMart and I stood there holding it up the first day. haha Chairs are sweet too. Some of that field grass is brittle and hard. I still have cuts on my feet from 2 weeks ago. -If you're gonna make a pass through the Bonnaroo fountain, do it the first day. It gets yellower and yellower as the festival goes on. ;P -If rain is in the forecast, get some sturdy footwear (boots or other), cuz you will fall. Or your friend will fall and take you down with them. - Someone told me to bring tons and tons of water.. so my friend and I both bought a gallon of water for each of us for each day.. then bought a bunch of individual bottles. We used less than 10% of what we bought. Bonnaroo has a few water towers with free water. We brought Nalgenes and totally loaded up every couple of hours since we never really went back to our camp site. Plus, you could only bring sealed water bottles into the Centeroo area (no sneaking vodka in your container), so there really was no point in having water except for while you were at camp.. and we really didn't stay at our camp (could be different for you). -Stow a lightweight towel, tarp, blanket for sitting. Sets won't always start on time and sitting/laying down for 5-10 minutes does a world of difference for your legs, back, and general well being. heh Quick naps also help you get through those shows that START at 2AM. - Feelin' like you're about to die from heat? Go hang out in the movie tent. It's air conditioned and who knows, you might actually like whatever indie or cult movie they're showing. - Every seat in the comedy tent is a good seat.. although if you sit on the right hand side (if you're looking at the stage), you may catch a glimpse or rub elbows with some of the other comedians while they're waiting for their turn on stage or sitting in the crowd catching the rest of the show. - We bought 2 things of box wine but barely broke into 1 (no glass bottles were allowed on the premises). I don't know about other people, but I get hella warm when I drink. So drinking in the hot humid TN sun, wouldn't have made for a good Bonnaroo experience (for me). Also, frequent trips to the port-o-potties? Yeah no thanks. Going over to the Brooers tent is a must though. I'm all about trying local beers. -BRING EXTRA TOILET PAPER. Along with that, having a small flashlight definitely helps in the middle of the night maneuvering yourself in the port-o-potty. - $7 showers... SO WORTH IT. If you go in the morning, you get your choice of water temperature. By afternoon it's just straight up cold water. Snag some free shampoo/conditioner/lotion samples whenever you can. -Hit up the non-music tents.. free stuff might come in handy later. -Bring enough cash. ATM fee was $3.95 PLUS BofA charged me (grrr). So if you're interested in.. sleeping, not falling down in the mud/dust, eating super healthy (there are some vegan/vegetarian options but still), quiet neighbors, "normal" people, and "comfortable" temperatures.. Sorry guys, Bonnaroo isn't all that fantastic. Too many people, too many bands, too many stages. Your campsite is guaranteed to be an hours walk from the band you want to see. And the band you want to see is always scheduled at the same time as that other band you wanted to see. Meet someone you really like? You'll never see them again. On the other hand, I've always had a great time despite the faults. Tickets are expensive, as is everything else about Bonnaroo. It would be easy to attend 3 smaller festivals for the same cost. Smaller festivals where the other attendees are like family, your friend's are camped nearby, and there's time to see all the music you wanted and still hang out in camp. Bonnaroo 2002: I've lived in Arizona and Florida, but I've never felt so close to heat exhaustion as the first Bonnaroo. My god was it hot. Water was scarce and selling for $7 a gallon. My friends made a small fortune by buying ice at the festival and carting it through the campgrounds at an unreasonable markup. The highway was backed up for eight hours to enter. Actually a lot of fun-- people playing music in the street, local girls flashing and riding by in the beds of pickups, and bottles of whiskey passed from car to car. Lots of great music. Lots of freaky people. I met some girl who was crying and she became very attached. Slept outside my tent because I.. wouldn't let her inside. Had to move my campsite when she went to the bathroom! Poor girl. Bonnaroo 2003: Visited with friends who lived locally. Found a backroad in, waited less than 30 minutes on the road. Lots of great music. Campsite was even further from the stages than the previous year. Our neighbors had a nitrous tank and were selling balloons all night long. Unfortunately some of the patrons were acting obnoxiously, and people were stepping and falling onto our tent causing damage. The next morning they packed up and left early-- sold their nitrous and ran off with the profits. Except the $100 bill lying on the ground. The naked gutterpunks wallowing in a puddle of mud near the port-o-lets was memorable. Bonnaroo is a fun thing if your college aged, or if you've never been to a megafestival. If I lived nearby, I'm sure I'd continue to go every year. If you have to travel a long distance, I think you could probably find better options for your Summer music festival. read more

I will be back as many years as I can until I get too old to deal with it. Bonnaroo 2010 was my first Roo experience and I can say that it was everything I had hoped for and more. I think the way the stages were set up was perfect. Not TOO far apart to hop back and forth but not so close that there was too much background noise from other stages. The food was actually really good for a festival. I have been to other festivals (Phish fests, Gathering) and they never had the amount of options as I saw at Bonnaroo. There were so many vegetarian dishes, fried things, frozen drinks, and even some awesome micro brews at select beer stands. I ate these Japanes Soba noodles about 3 times that weekend that I still think about. I also had my first ever footlong corndog... holy god. It was amazing and disgusting all at the same time. I don't think I will want another until next year. I can't review much about the camping in tents, because we had an RV.. which as far as I'm concerned is the only way I will ever experience Bonnaroo. The people who are bitching about being far away should have probably planned ahead to arrive on Wednesday night like we did. Not only did we not hit a line entering the festival but we got an RV spot a mere 7 minute walk from Centeroo. If you want your Bonnaroo experience to be significantly better, arrive early and get yourself a better spot. There are 250,000 people aiming for the same thing you are... so arrive early or come on Thursday and get what you should come to expect of a festival of this magnitude. Now down to it... the music. You really can't find this number of bands and performing artists and this many genres in any other place but Bonnaroo. From Tori Amos to Circa Survive, The Black Keys to Jay-z, Gwar to Stevie Wonder, Nas and Damien Marley to Blues Traveler... the variety is one of a kind and the experience is nothing less. There is no way I could get to all the bands I wanted to see, and the mid-day heat made it almost unbearable at times but like I said... a little relaxation at the RV with a cold beer and you were ready to head back out. Sets were long, sound quality on nearly every show I saw was unparalleled and the energy among the people was something pretty special. Bonnaroo really does have something for everyone. Are you a new age hippy or one of the Woodstock greats? Are you a rap fan? A rave fan? A folk fan? A reggae fan? Need some metal? Want some rock n roll? Its all there at Bonnaroo. Next year is the 10th Anniversary...and the rumors are already stirring of the surprises and extras that will take place- a pack of hungry wolves won't keep me away. I remember the first time I had heard of Bonnaroo. Rolling Stone had done a story on it and from that moment, reading that article in the public library, my fifteen year old eyes were full of hopes and excitement. It wasn't until 2009 that I was able to attend the festival for the first time. Of course I had browsed through the 'what to bring guide' online and looked at forums providing suggestions (A MUST for a first-timer) and was fortunate enough to bring enough water not to have to buy the $7 gallons. Although when walking around I just toted a refill-able BPA free bottle (from home, not there-there they are $22). And there is free water bottle fill up stations. This year I'm bringing a camelbak (you want one! they were everywhere last year). Nothing was stolen from my campsite, I had everything hidden in my car, I was able to get a shirt off a guy (not a stand) for $10, and I had a great time. I got there late the first day and avoiding a 7 hour line. And my phone was out of order after the first day (this kills me since there is so much free stuff/events tweeted from the tents & bands). As long as you have a water bottle/camelbak, sunscreen, rain boots, and are comfortable showering in a swimsuit in a trailer full of other people bathing at sinks, you'll be A-Ok. read more

When you say music festival in Nashville, expect a Bonnaroo conversation to soon follow. Bonnaroo is a magical time of year when you gather up your glow sticks, your most beat up pair of Toms and the most reliable CamelBak you can find and go primitive with 80K of the best friends you've never met. Nothing else can even compare to getting lost in amazing music for 4 days straight. Bonnaroo gives me a certain spark of emotion. A mix of peaceful, elated and totally exhausted. It's odd, but euphoric. I went in search of that feeling again this year and found it during the Santigold show. The music was perfection, the crowd was smiling and dancing and somewhere between a couple on acid and a drunk dude from Chicago, I found my perfect moment... and it was well worth the yearly wait. Of course, this festival isn't for everyone; that's kinda the beauty of it. Yes, the heat sucks. Yes, the dirt sucks. Yes, the walking sucks. Once you get past the bitching though, you find yourself totally consumed in all the splendor that is Bonnaroo. Do it at least once. You might love it - you might hate it. If you are a music lover, it is a must though. Be prepared by bringing plenty of water and booze. Watch out for shady characters as theft has become more common over the last few years. My dad describes it like this, "You hate it until the day you have to leave, and then you can't wait for next year."
