    Speed of Sound Music

The owner is a great guy, very…read morefriendly and keenly interested in teaching music to the community (also plays at some of the local schools...). The piano teacher we were paired up with was great, my child loved the weekly lessons and the relationship established throughout the course of our patronage of Speed of Sound. We were, unfortunately, quite disappointed with the logistical side of the business. We repeatedly had lessons canceled or changed with as little as an hour or two notice. There were even a number of occasions where we arrived for a lesson to find that our teacher was not available, no replacement had been organized, and as a result the front desk attendant (a student at high school) would sit in on the "lesson" for which we still had to pay full price. We also received a number of emails from the owner notifying us that we were behind on our bills, when in fact the owner hadn't sent us a bill for multiple months (I have never been late on a bill in my life and have an 840 credit score). Towards the end of our time at Speed of Sound, the school transitioned to a timeslot-based system where students would receive a weekly timeslot rather than dedicated teacher. While this system may be helpful with logistical challenges for Speed of Sound, it resulted in a real lack of continuity for my child and many of the lessons were spent familiarizing with new, random teachers and revisiting material that had already been taught. The school also instituted a policy whereby clients were not able to cancel or change lessons due to scheduling conflicts; I can understand this for group lessons, but when you're paying $70 an hour for a private lesson the lack of flexibility and randomized teacher assignment proved too much for us... We ultimately decided to enlist a private teacher outside of Speed of Sound. and have been very happy with the choice.

I have never taken a singing class before coming to the School of the Getdown. My only experience…read morewith singing had been in elementary school as a class, and singing in my car while commuting to and from work! I felt quite comfortable right from the start. Faye Carol will put you at ease and make you feel like an old friend. But she will also challenge you and help you discover your own abilities. She stresses that you do NOT need to try to be like any other singer. You just need to be you! You are not in competition with the other students. The other students are actually supportive. I was in class with other students that had been coming for months or years. It is like family! Always there with Faye is Joe Warner, a very accomplished and talented pianist. Whatever song you chose to bring for your solo, Joe will be able to master it very quickly. He will work with you and help you present your song as you wish or envision it, both to the other students and to family and friends who may come to witness the final recital. I felt the class was fun and challenging. I would certainly recommend it to my friends, and to those of you reading these reviews.

Faye created an atmosphere right from the start that was more welcoming and supportive than I have ever experienced. She focuses on the joy that making music brings, not all the things we were doing wrong. She just made everything we did so much fun! Consequently, I watched every person in the group grow as a singer and performer in ways I would not have imagined could happen in such a short time. I can't recommend Faye's workshop more highly for singers from beginners to professionals!

I wanted to re-learn piano and I wanted my son to start so I reached out to Charlie last fall. We have been gong an hour a week since then, splitting the hour between my son and I. I really liked Charlie right away. Her studio is behind her home and has a very homey vibe. It's quirky in the best way. My son will sit on a beanbag chair and read books while I have my lesson and vice versa. Charlie has structured lessons for both of us, meeting us where we're at. I've been able to get through two whole books and my son is about to be finished with his first one. We also do flash cards and theory. I appreciate that Charlie really wants us to learn the notes/scales etc and be able to actually read music. Charlie is also always accommodating to our schedule and I've appreciated her flexibility when we've had other things come up or one of us was sick. If you're looking for a local piano teacher I can't recommend Charlie enough.

Those who want to write music are encouraged on that path. If a student wants to learn improvisation, she knows how to work with them. I've seen her work with very young pupils, with high school and college students, and with adults who are returning to musical roots, or trying out the piano or guitar for the first time. Charlie really loves her students, and that makes all the difference.

When entering the center, there are many attendants who are very helpful and guide you to where you need to go for your seats. The bathrooms are also very clean. I really appreciate that everything was smooth from parking, seating and even leaving the event. I will definitely be back for future shows.

There were two entrances, both with short lines and a security & bag check. Once inside, we got a glass of the Sonoma County red blend and HenHouse hazy ipa from one of two concessions stands in the lobby, both beverages in theater cups that come with lids and are reusable for just $3 extra. Staff was friendly and helpful at the event, whether serving us drinks or helping us find our seats. The venue was plain looking both inside and outside. The seats in the auditorium (Ruth Finley Person Theater) were basic but not uncomfortable. And the view, even from the last row in the back on the lower level, was decent. Sound from the stage was fine, clear enough that I could hear every single word the comedian used to keep the crowd rolling with laughter, including myself of course. Good times!
