Great bookstore in Santa Fe, we found out about it checking on line the area for another bookstore. We stopped here on a Friday and they close at 6 pm not at 7 pm as it's on Yelp and Google. Sunday closed. We stopped by next day since we were in the area! Parking in the back! The store is big, very well organized, has great customer service and many rooms with many bookshelves. A paradise for book worms like us! Prices are decent, we met other nice customers and chatted with them. It's a nice hangout as well. Great books selection and left with many goodies, had to restrain ourselves since we were taking a plane and didn't have so much room in the luggage. Nice store in Santa Fe, if you live there, check it out. If you visit and need a book, stop by. Very inviting and cozy! read more

I have visited Book Mountain several times whenever my wife and I are visiting Santa Fe, NM. We are from just south of Dallas, TX and visit Santa Fe, NM frequently due to my wife attending the Mountain and Valley Wool Festival in the fall of each year. I have purchased books at Book Mountain that I have never even seen anywhere else! There scope of their stock is quite expansive and contains some real finds. I gave this place 3 stars because it has a wide selection of used books and is a lot bigger than it appears on the outside. The employee or possibly owner who works there is always extremely friendly and helpful. However, I deducted two stars due to the pricing of books. You're basically paying half or a little over half of what the list price on the book is. This would be fine if the book was in like new or excellent condition. Most of the books in the store are in fair to acceptable condition. Majority of their inventory contains older books that were read many times before and show significant signs of wear or have yellow pages. They look like old library books. I completely understand that prices are elevated to keep the lights on and doors open but, for just a few dollars more- you could buy a new book on Amazon. I hope the owner(s) would consider a price model that would take into account the condition of the book. I think prices are across the board standard to make the process easier and simplistic. However, it's not really beneficial to the customer unless the books are in better condition. I think they might sell more books if they lowered the prices on the fair to acceptable condition books. Book Mountain has been a Santa Fe staple since the mid-seventies. Peggy and her husband used to be on the touring circuit with their folk music act and used this storefront to satisfy the local book reading population ever since. They were the longest-running comic book store in Santa Fe too, satisfying the kids and adult collectors for decades before they sidelined the store with True Believers, who eventually broke off into their own store, breaking a few hearts and a lot of feelings. But if you are into book exchanges that were more active in the 1970's and 1980's due to economic downturns in the economy, this is your place to find both new and older books to read. Note that you get an account when you do your first buy that gives you a membership discount, and they don't rely on computers or take credit cards. Everything is hand-written. read more

Peggy is getting s little grouchy in her days and starting to be a little rude especially to kids. We have been going here for years and have always purchased books to enrich our school curriculum . We are homeschoolers and Peggy doesn't realize the potential she could have if she would cater to the homeschool community buy excepting books for homeschooling. My husband and I went to Book Mountain this weekend to exchange some books. I have never in my life been so angry leaving a store! The woman who owns the store is one of the rudest most nasty human beings I have ever come into contact with! From the moment we walked in the door she acted like we were bothering her by being there and offering our used books. She actually told us that most of what we brought in was trash and that she was too busy (with one other customer in the store at the time) and that the phone could start ringing any minute. Although she didn't want to give us any credit, she didn't want us to take our books elsewhere, said that she would "recycle" them for us. Seems to me like she wanted us to leave a bunch of books that were pretty much in the same condition as what she had on the shelves for her to sell without having to give us credit for them. On top of being so awfully rude to us, she actually at one point started bragging to my husband about how she had chewed out one of her employees that morning (the poor guy was sitting right there) about a broken swamp cooler that he didn't break. WOW!!!! I will never set foot in this store again! read more
