    Shopping for books!
    Lisa Q.

I visit Recycled Reads nearly every Sunday... because I belong to a Meetup sewing group that meets there. I love browsing the bookshelves! They have everything! I've found some of my favorite crafting books at Recycled Reads! Often on Sundays there will be a musician group or a poetry event. It is so much fun to enjoy their offerings! Recycled Reads is, bar none, THE best place to bring your kiddos and let them choose their own books!

Aren't bookstores kind of depressing, even for bibliophiles? It's hard to go into Barnes & Noble and know that not only is that crisp $24.99 hardcover a gratuitous waste of paper, it could easily bought used for cheaper (...or downloaded for free). This is the Austin Public Library's retail arm, and gee golly was I happy to find it. All paperbacks $1, all hardcovers $2, rare/vintage $10-15!! The selection is great and spans everything a typical library has (not just unwanted mystery/sci-fi and outdated biology primers from the 70's). The books are in excellent condition, many with clear jackets and call number stickers still attached. They're mostly staffed by volunteers. They also take book donations and do many community events, and were having a pretty awesome (and pretty sophisticated) kids' puppet show at the time. Just one of those places that make you feel good about the world. :)

So I had to wait a few minutes outside until they let me in. The San Antonio parking garage was available today for me to park. But I can imagine during the business week it is full as they stated on their website. I highly recommend you bring a check or money order if you don't use or have any checks prior to coming here. If you decide to have a money ensure it is for the exact amount. Check their website for documents to bring with whether it is for yourself or your child. I ensured, I had my previous expired passport, Social Security card, birth certifcate, and my Texas Drivers license. I chose the regular passport and ID card. They kept my previous passport as it was used for the verified documentation. So be expecting them keep whatever document for the processing if your application. They will mail your documents back along with your new passport. The staff here were all very friendly, informative, and resourceful with knowledge to make your experience here a delightful one. I highly recommend using this facility for your passport needs.

I did not receive it until January 27, which was too late to travel and required me to pay $611 to rebook my flight. My passport was routed to a P.O. box inside a third-party UPS Store that was closed for multiple consecutive days. There was no voicemail, no online notice, and no response to repeated calls, making my passport completely inaccessible despite being a time-sensitive federal document. A paper sign on a locked door is not adequate notice when access to critical documents is at stake. The business avoids acknowledging that many secure third-party mailbox facilities provide after-hours key access, and that the specific location THEY chose does not. Routing a passport to a location without key access, no contingency plan, and no communication places all of the risk on the customer. After I posted a review, the owner began calling and texting me asking that I remove it, rather than addressing the access failure or the financial loss. I chose this service instead of driving to Houston, and that decision is on me. Still, it is reasonable to warn others so they can make an informed choice. If you truly need your passport by a specific date, go directly to a federal passport agency. I was told I'd get it Saturday and that's why I paid the $500 in fact when I had my appointment I hadn't even booked my flight and only bought it after I was reassured I'd have it Saturday.

Black Pearl Books, one of Austin's few Black-owned independent bookstores, is closing this chapter of their physical operations. Husband-and-wife owners Eric and Katrina Brooks stated that this move comes as they "rethink life as empty nesters." I got an opportunity to chat with the couple. Eric said their daughter, Alicia, will be going off to college. He said they still continue to do pop ups with community partners like ACC Highland campus and the Austin Public Library. The owners will work toward their future plans and continue to host authors through the fall. The closing celebration on Saturday will include live illustrations, henna, matcha, and a live reading and book signing. Importantly, the City of Austin has designated June 20, 2026, as Black Pearl Books Day. This bookstore has been a beacon of light in the Austin community and will be sorely missed! For me, it is a bigger issue...we see more and more smaller businesses closing especially over the last few years. Big box national book sellers seemingly are expanding. While Black Pearl Books owners are closing their brick-and-mortar shop, I am excited for the new opportunities that await them. We say so long for now...not goodbye!

Though they are closing the brick & mortar, the owners say they aren't going anywhere and this makes me happy. I am hoping this means we will continue to see them involved in all things books, social justice, and more. This is a place I started going to when I first started coming to Austin on twice-yearly visits (prior to relocation here). For several years in fact. It is one the best places to obtain banned books. The collection is impressive and IMPORTANT. Though it is a small shop, they have EVERYTHING. If they don't they get it for you. They go above and beyond! I write this as if they are still in existence and that's because as I write this, they are. While there is still time, get out and support this local, Black-owned, glorious bookstore! When they're gone and doing other things, continue to support them. We need MORE people and MORE places like this. Period. They walk the walk and talk the talk! A++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
