I'm not quite sure why I liked Bookmans so much better than its closest competitor Half Price Books -- there were definitely some cheesy things here, like the rack of tabloids by the checkout. And the weirdly large media section. The nonfiction books were comparable to HPB's used (non-remainder) books -- they must skim off the better books to sell on the internet. However, the literature & fiction section was excellent and scores points. Also there's a community room, and they were running some kind of kids' reading competition. I guess the difference is that Bookmans seems to really want to be a socially responsible business that's engaged in the community, while HPB is mostly posing. read more

Bookmans is my favorite bookstore anywhere. They have a giant selection of books of every genre and that is only half the store. The store itself is huge, which is great, because usually used book stores are crammed. It is a little confusing trying to find your way around the store, but they have the store layout on some of the shelves which helps. The coolest thing about this store is that you can bring in your old media (books, music, video games, etc) and trade them for store credit or cash. If you trade for credit, they will give you a very good deal. I don't know why anyone would get cash when they have so many cool things to buy. read more

Bookmans really is as good as it gets for the ultimate exchange for, well, anything. Books, magazines, comics, DVDs, CDs, records, video games, electronics, and electronic accessories. I'm able to find retro, old school video game accessories, games, strategy guides. As well as weird, obscure cords, plugs, things of that nature. They always have given me fair trade in credit. Their prices are comparable to Amazon and sometimes less. You can sometimes find a gem hidden in here priced for a little less. The employees are kind and helpful. This was a startling discovery for me. Dozens and dozens of bookcases, neatly arranged by genre, as well as a musical instrument and electronic media store, all under one roof. The whole family loves coming here. There is an amazing selection of books, toys, comics, games......you get the idea. We were looking for a new series that's about a third grade reading level. One of the staff members came over and started pulling books that would fit the criteria. She spent extra time with our son figuring out what his interests are and recommending titles. I grew up with nothing but big box retailer bookstores in my area. It was always the place to be on a Friday night. Man, do I wish we had a Bookman's back at home! When my family first moved to Phoenix, we learned about this place through the Arizona Screenwriters Association. I love that Bookman's has a genuine love for their community. From working with the arts, to teen parties, and their kind love for animals, I can't recommend a better place to be! My kids are homeschooled, finding a good place for good kids to hang out is really tough. Luckily, the spirit of Bookman's is great! My musical teenage daughter feels right at home in the new guitar section, I can't get enough of the new age corner, and my pre-teen son would take up permanent residence in the gaming section if he could! Many occasions, we've had to call the store to find out if they had that hard-to-find game on my son's birthday list. The employees are happy to help over the phone! Have been shopping here since i was 10 years old. (I'm 21 now), and I have to say this is a very good store. I feel they give me a more of a fair price than zia's for trade in. Its a huge store but very clean and organised just right if not more right. Some of the staff have worked there from the beginning and are very happy with their benifts. Great place. Location isn't perfect, but if you step inside it is collector and reseller paradise. This place has a massive book section which I really haven't looked through ever, but pretty sure there dirt cheap. Video game section is nice with some great NES picks, also pretty cheap. I asked the cashier once and they told me they price the items off of online sales. This is a bit puzzling because I spotted an NES wheel of fortune for $9, and I've never, ever seen it sell for more than $5. The vinyl and CD section is a whole other story, as most of the records go un-tested and are priced on cover condition. I only know this because I watched someone pricing a stack of records. I also did ask them how they come up with this wide range of prices. I felt that it was weird that a cover damaged Led Zeppelin I record that was perfectly playable is $4 and a nice Simon and Garfunkel record is $11. Don't understand the pricing at bookman's (not that it's bad) because it favors the costumer. Overall, I would highly recommend Bookmans as a stop for anyone. read more

I LOVE THIS BOOKMANS. I swear you guys, they have everything, every category, every sub-category you could ever ever want. But that's not the best part. Their employees are the best part. Like seriously they know everything, EVERYTHING! I come to them with lists of obscure books of all genre and I swear I can't stump them. 9/10 times they don't even have to look the book up, they just ask who it's by and find it right away or at least go to the correct area if it's not there; It's insane. They know it all. Another great thing is they let dogs in, so my baby girl can come with me and my fiancé, it's the best! I can always count on Bookmans to have some obscure yoga book I'm looking for. I collect my books and take them to Bookmans just so I can get credit to buy more books. I do think this location doesn't take as many things as the one in Mesa but maybe it's just me. I don't think they have magazines at this location. This place is huge. The staff is awesome. There are some great finds. You have 7 days to return something for full price. My first time looking for books here I didn't find much of what I was looking for. My second time a year later and I snagged almost everything I wanted. I go for paperbacks and try to stay under $11 a book. Older titles are more like $6. Mass market paperbacks are $2-4 usually. My boyfriend ended up with hardcovers from $5-20. The first season of a Tv show I wanted was $15. Earrings are $1. Rings are $6-15 and make for a great prank on your parents making them think you got engaged. Advice to Bookmans - Tell your employees checking people out to smile and be friendly. An android probably would have been livelier than the two working the registers. Rings may be in a case so they don't walk off, but if someone wants to look at them just pull out the trays instead of making someone point while you guess wrong over and over. read more

Okay let me explain. Yes they have a lot of awesome books, nick-nacks, chachkis, instruments, video games and a very friendly staff! But...this place is in a desperate need of renovating. Don't get me wrong, my daughter and I enjoy coming here. And I love the feel of an old bookstore that has natural character. First off this is the only property left in all of Phoenix. Recently I visited the Flagstaff property and that property is immaculate. They have a coffee shop, smells clean and it is clean. Now given the 19th. Ave property has a great staff. Great kids section as well. But the carpeting is way overdue of a shampoo/steaming and please oh please crank up the a/c in there. This amazing store deserves to be renovated. read more

One of my favorite places to go and spend a few hours. Bring in old books and games, get store credit, and walk out with new stuff. Can't beat that. The prices are reasonable, although not as cheap as they used to be. Instead of getting books for a dollar or two you're more likely to pay about half the cover price. However, their selection is awesome and most of the used books look brand new. Getting rid of the A/B trade distinction was a great move on their part, and makes it easier to trade things in and redeem your credits. Oh, and this place has one of the best teacher/homeschooler discounts that I know of. You have to fill out a form and submit proof of employment (ID badge I think). Once you do, though, you get 20% off of all of your purchases, not just those that are school related. There is free wi-fi and a few tables and chairs scattered around. Their selection may not include the exact book you want, but if you enjoy literature and other types of consumable media, then this is the place for you. It's super easy to walk in, wander around, and get lost for an hour among bright bindings and shiny CD cases. If you are looking for a fairly cheap and educational adventure, this is the place to go. Bonus: Air conditioned. A super place to spend a hot summer afternoon. Not a bonus: They don't keep record of everything they have. I just love Bookmans and have been in this relationship with them since my son was 2. We love books. The two of us can comb the bookstore for hours and find dozens to purchase. The good news is that we can also return those same books and gather up more. I feel so rewarded when I can find and share my love of reading with others. I believe Bookmans may be the an anti-depressant as well, as I am always happy after a trip to Bookmans! I find that quintessential surge of dopamine just receiving credit to get more to read. And when I can find a book, and a game, and top that visit off with a cute little tchotchke for my home decor (like the owl watching me scribe this review) - well isn't that the very BEST day ever. I appreciate the effort the employees make to hustle the book reviews through the procurement process, and I lost my matching playing card once and they only mildly seemed irritated. Lucky for all of us I found it in the bottomless purse I procured a few years ago at My Sister's Closet (wait, I see a theme here!) Musicians will be delighted to know they are expanding that section and there's also a nice gaming and music area for those with that specific need - ala my son and husband. I have been going to Bookmans for years and used to love it. Every time I go my experience just gets worse and worse. Today I brought in 4 brand new books I got for christmas, best sellers and a whole set of childrens mine craft books, 8 of them, my son had outgrown and read once. They took all and offered me 12 dollars. Every year they offer less and less and want more and more for the used. My 6 yr. old neice wanted some childrens books, the 1st readers, they have maybe 8 pages with a few words on each, they charged me 24 dollars for 5, when I asked why so much they said that they order them new and so they sell them at the full cost. ?????????? Why have them hidden among the used books then. When I questioned the cashier, very snottily she told me, "Thats why they mark them on the inside". A 6 yr. doesn't know that. read more

Bookmans is a great used bookstore. The staff is very friendly and helpful. One thing to keep in mind is it is a used bookstore - the entire stock is used so don't expect them to have the newest book on hand - I made that mistake. I dropped by this second hand place a few times. I was able to find some foreign language books in a usuable condition at very attractive prices. One item was a keeper for $5 ; printed 30 years ago. They have a very wide selection of games, music , novel and educational books but in the foreign language areas, they are not too deep. You won't find consecutive volumes of the same series title in French or Italian. There is a categorical orderliness to the place but an incomplete selection that is typical of any second hand store. The service is upon demand. I find the people worker there friendly and take their time to help you. The place is setup to make you feel like you are not overpaying for stuff however the downside is that it is not design to be a place to hang around for a long time because it doesn't have a coffee shop inside. A good place to visit every once in a while to find that classic out of print item or to experience something new from the B&N and Borders. I like to see what else they do to differentiate themselves. read more

I am a big fan of Bookmans! Since being pointed in their direction a few months ago I have been there multiple times. I have been very pleased with their selection each and every time I go in there. I have bought multiple birthday gifts there because they have exactly what I am looking for. My 8 year old daughter and I love their children's selections and I found some old childhood favorites of mine that I can now pass along to my daughter. The musical instrument section is also a big plus for me since we are musicians. It's not a very big selection but it is decent and the prices are not bad. I wish the music (CD's and Vinyls) section had a bigger selection but that is my personal preference and I realize they are a book store. The staff is always friendly and helpful. However, sometimes they are hard to find in the store. All in all I love this place and will continue to shop there! read more

This is a great place to get used books and I've done so. However, don't buy your movies there. I bought two that turned out to be defective. They say they check their movies but don't. They used to have a lot of maps around the store to make it easier to find things, but most were removed the last time I was there. Im an experienced gamer/Dm for D&D since it came out in 1973 as ChainMail. That being said, I have used Bookmans as a quick dive to see what they have over the years. I specialize in estate acquisitions and sales. My side business being that I buy/sell D&D items. I have noticed that over time that Bookmans have lowered their exchange rate and overpriced their items by as much as 50%. Perfect example was today when I went in to see what they had. I was instantly disappointed by almost all their D&D items way overpriced. The thing that really got to me was the metal dice that were in a glass showcase going for...wait for it: $40 per set!!!! I showed their so called in house "D&D" guy the same dice for HALF the cost. His explanation" Well, we have to compete with EBAY, that's what the price is." REALLY!?!? I JUST showed you prices for the exact same sets on line. Then I went to the Wizards Spell Compendiums. $50 per and 5 total. All had been wrapped in a non-factory cellophane type material. I told the in house "D&D" person that this easily knocks off $15-$20 off the listed price. Plus there was stains on 2 of them. After that he said: Im done here. Call if you really want to buy something." I have it all recorded. The manga and books are half-off their original retail price, which is a really good deal. I started going to the Phoenix Bookman's several years ago, when I had collections of several types of items that I wanted to sell or trade. That led to me becoming a committed and enthusiastic fan. When I go to Bookmans, I always find something that I can buy, and I usually leave feeling as if I have discovered a rare treasure. From the Phoenix location, I progressed to the Mesa store and to ordering merchandise from the out-of-town stores, such as Tucson. I have never been disappointed. Over the years, I have gone to Bookman's to sell, trade, and buy and have always found something I need or want, at prices that are well below what I would have to pay elsewhere. I have bought, sold, and traded everything from house wares to jewelry to electronics to gaming supplies (and SO much more also), and I find that going to Bookman's is a great way to save and to also find high quality pre-enjoyed items that many times are in nearly-new condition. Bookman's at either location is a great place to visit and browse. Oh, and I almost forgot to mention - they have free WiFi as well. With all this, how can you not visit at least once? I have been ripped off for the last time here at good ol' Bookman's! I have been a loyal customer for years and due to an upcoming move, I have been bringing thousands of dollars worth of books, DVDs, and music here only to receive absolutely paltry cash in exchange - of course, keeping the money in store is always going to mean you get "more" value for your trade-in. I know this but trade-in values are the worst I have ever seen. Today, however, was the last straw. I have a Bose sound system in very good condition that I took to every Bookman's in Tucson yesterday during a business trip. They all offered me something for it because they had other ones in stock, they said they could not offer more. So, I decided to bring it to the Phoenix location today for a trade-in along with other books, music, and DVDs only to be told that they couldn't take it because it was "outdated" (it has an iPod dock). I was also told that I didn't much for my other trade ins because of road construction around the store (their sales are down). I've traded in books/music/DVDs in stores all over the US and never encountered such a poor return on my trade-in. There is ZERO uniformity between stores and it seems buyers just pluck out random items. I am sick and tired of getting ripped off and being treated poorly by many (though not all) of their buyers. There are some particularly unpleasant folks working here. Save your money and go anywhere else - try Zia for music, Gamestop for video games, and even Barnes and Noble or Changing Hands Bookstore. As a note to Bookman's: while some members of your staff are lovely to deal with, many are not. It would do you well to re-instruct them on customer service, particularly how to appropriately tell someone you will not accept their item for trade-in. read more

I was looking for a good retro game store in Arizona and I decided to try Bookmans as I had heard many good things about them. I found many great deals on games and the staff were super helpful. I brought some items to trade in although they wouldn't accept any of them, I was still able to get the movies given to charity and the electronics recycled so it was still good as I was just bringing them in mostly to get rid of them. The guy that looked at the electronics for me was super nice and still gave me $5 of credit because he overheard that I had driven over 40 minutes from where I live to get to the store. playing the "poor college student" card here, i went to bookmans with a dvd player, computer speakers, a digi cam, an iflip, and about 90 dvds including some tv sets. they took 4 of my dvds (2 seasons of l word, my nightmare on elm st. video set [including 3d glasses, in great condition - what a find, that bitch cost me $100!!!], and a family guy i think. and they gave me $12. what a load of shit. they took the dvd player, digi cam, and iflip of course. gave me like $33 for those. again, rip. overall, kind of picky as far as what they take, cuz when i was browsing the shelves, lots of the movies i had/was turning weren't on their shelves. so instead, i took all my dvds to mo money pawn shop on 12th and indian school and got 85 big green bitchez. it looks like they have a ton of books, which is pretty cool, but i believe in a system of free literature, aka the library. screw you, bookmans! however, you get three point five stars because not only did i find my favorite lez movie lola, but another great flick by the name of everyday people. read more
