I don't want to gatekeep but I DO want to gatekeep. This is the best used bookstore in North Phoenix. And it's not because of the selection of books. It's because the two old guys that are some of the most wonderful fellas I've ever met. They know where everything is and what they do and don't have in stock. I spent 2 hours in this store, part of the time browsing books and the other time just chatting with the fellas. Now, the best part is I am a romance girly and they have $1.00 Romance books!!! I bought 17 books today. 15 were Romance! They have thousands of books and a sitting area ANNDDDDD 2 cute dogs that are in store that will ask for belly rubs. Whatttttt!?!?!? This was an amazing visit to the bookstore and they definitely found a forever customer in me because I will most certainly be back! Probably on a weekly basis. read more

Popped in today to buy some books as a bday treat to myself. You know a spot is gonna be great when you are greeted by two dogs that smile at you. This spot truly is an indie bookstore, there is a little bit of nostalgia here and of course books. I love hole in the wall indie book stores. There aren't a lot of them out there so I get excited when I find one. I read a mix of genres. In the horror section I saw that they had a Dean Koontz special. I've always wanted to read his work and this felt like the perfect time to start. I bought my first Koontz books today because of this store. I will be back especially for the dogs and the great prices. read more

This is my favorite bookstore. It is where I can always go for the latest books by my favorite local authors. Their books are located in front of the store, making them easy to find. The store has a treasure trove of books in every category. Thom is knowledgeable and enjoys helping customers find their next favorite author or a specific book they are searching for. A little jewel of a store. These kinds of places are slowly becoming extinct. In fact, the owner stated that he was one of only five in Arizona. This store is jampacked with all kinds of books. Some books are very old and some are some locked books in cases. Most titles are easy to find as he has alphabetize a lot of selections. Overall very easy to browse. There's actually a couch and some chairs if you want to sit and read for a while. Lots of well-known authors for fiction and nonfiction so that you can curl up with a book or when you want something to read on a trip, or some time off. Just beware of the mess. There's stacks of books everywhere and lots of books that are waiting to be sorted. Also, another point is that he does buy books regularly so if you have some titles interest, it would be good to run them by. The only unfortunate part is that the landlord, who he rents from is negligent. So the parking lot is disheveled and needs repair, the store, fronts signs, and all of the above also are in disrepair. In fact, the day I came in the air conditioning wasn't not working on a 113' day. Very sad anyone would treat another human that way. Especially the tenant who rents from you. read more

There are several good used book stores in Maricopa County. This is in my top three. Located just south of Bell Road on the west side of 32nd Street with easy in and out of the parking lot. Their entire inventory is on line. In the past I was able to order and pay for a book on line. Then in a day or two I drive there on my errands circuit and pick it up. And friendly people work there. Want something you cannot find before? Ask that guy behind the counter and he will check his sources to locate a rare jewel. read more

This is one of those stores that another reviewer referred to as a hidden gem. I called ahead and found a book that I wasn't able to find anywhere else in the valley. Tom who answered the phone said it showed as being in stock on his computer. He then went and made sure that it was there before I made the drive. I have to tell you that when you first walk in, it doesn't look like the most organized store I have been in. If fact, it looked a bit disorganized with a lot of books in stock. The secret to this store was to find out they have every book in the store in the computer. The impression I got is they keep their inventory pretty much up to date so if it is in the computer, it probably is there. I can't complain, they had that book I was speaking of in stock when nobody else in the metro area didn't. Yes, I had to drive from central Phx up to almost Bell Road. Yes, I could have ordered it online and waited a few days. But nothing is as nice for me as knowing I can curl up with that good book this evening! One more thing I like about Tom was his general attitude. He knows his business. He isn't afraid to say positive things about other independent stores and who might know more about one type of book than another. That will bring me back if nothing else would. read more

Was excited to finally go here. The books are priced a bit higher than other local bookstores but that didn't bother me. What did bother me was the horrible HORRIBLE barcodes that they use. I purchased 6 books. The sticker/barcodes they use are so overly strong, they literally remove the finishes of the books themselves. If this kind of thing doesn't bother you, go for it. For someone who is a collector, like myself, this is awful. read more

I found this place on accident and I am so happy I did. The outside of the store is quite deceiving, it is located in a strip mall and appears much smaller than it actually is. They have an awesome new book policy, buy the book and read it within 21 days and they will credit you the full price in trade for a used book. I'm hooked! You can also find any book online, and they will hold it for you to pick up. They store is well organized and Tom and Melanie are both friendly and helpful. They also have a great bargain section where you can find tons of ridiculously cheap books! read more

I love the idea of a local (it's in my neighborhood) book store. However, my experiences here have left me wanting. Overall their policies are confusing and poorly stated. I've been a customer half a dozen times and each time there is some new policy that I'm supposed to know, but was never explained to me. But beyond that, what truly makes me unhappy is their customer service. For example: today, while in, there was some confusion on how I could use my trade in monies. (They aren't a straight forward trade) When my husband and I started asking about the policy Tom (one of the owners) simply shrugged his shoulders and said we could go elsewhere. Melanie (the other owner) however, felt it was necessary to leave a customer who she was with to come over and thrust a finger at a black and white printed sign (one among many tacked to a wall above a high bookshelf) and then walk away. Apparently, her customer service technique is not to help confused customers understand, but to alienate them while trying to sell her own novel to other customers. Honestly, if I didn't already have $27 in credit there, I probably would never be back in. read more

I found this place through a deal website, it was in an area where I used to have appointments so I thought I'd check it out since I love cheap books. 50% off of USED prices, sign me up! The strip mall is old, but once you make your way inside there are thousands of books, and not the old crusty kind you find in some used bookstores. I was in the mood for finance books so I browsed that section and ended up leaving with 4 very useful books in great (practically new) condition for super cheap. One of the owners who helped me was extremely nice, a silly fatherly figure kind of friendly. I don't live anywhere near this place and don't have appointments in the area anymore, otherwise I'd be a regular. It's nothing fancy, but if you're one of those people who can't pick out just ONE book, it's worth it to stop in and check out. Cheaper books means more books to take home, which I love! read more

We first learned about this bookstore from a mention in the AZ Republic. The size is very deceiving. Lots of books with many categories represented. Well organized!!! And a bargain room!!! Most of the books are in great condition and priced accordingly, i.e. the bargain room is where you'll find the .25 paperbooks. The owners are very friendly and knowledgeable. Unfriendly staff. Have been in twice, both times I left unhappy. This is supposed to be a used bok store, but the only want you to trade in books you bought new. They refused to accept two books I purchased from them. There are so many policies regarding what they will take and then more policies how you can use your credits. I wont be back!!! I like but don't love this place. I like to back all small businesses that are out there doing their thing, so before I go to Barnes and Noble or shop online I'll hit up a couple locals to see what they have. They know better than me but sometimes I can't find any quality at the small bookstore. Good people and a great idea. I wish their was light music in the background because when there's a couple people staring at the same general area of books and there's nothing but breathing to be heard it becomes quite awkward. I found this bookstore when I was searching for another copy of Richard Bach's Illusion. They had four, and I bought three. II didn't want to be greedy! Then my Aunt and Uncle came to town. My Uncle Wayne had a list of books he was searching for since he loves to read while traveling. He found most of the ones he was missing. Then I took a friend to search for a book. She found it and is a fan for life! The place is clean, friendly and has the most amazing discount room where I have bought several finds! I love everything about Dog-Eared Pages (DEP) bookseller! They are friendly, knowledgeable, and they give you credit for the books you trade in. They have the largest selection of gently "used" paperback books that are "half-price" (or less) compared to a new regular priced paperbacks f in the area. If you're looking for a particular book, give them the name and author, & they will tell you if they have it. You use to find several "used-books" or "trade-in" booksellers in the Metro Phoenix area, but they have been slowly disappearing over the last 10 yrs. Let's hope DEP will continue to thrive or survive the real estate /property management trend (greed) of increasing their profits at the expense of small business owners, to the extent that small businesses can't afford to stay in business or make a simple living after they pay for their monthly rent or lease. It will be a sad day when we loose the ability to trade-in books because these "small business owners", mom & pop stores will have to sell their books on-line, and conduct their business from home. Do you think you would want to pay for postage to "mail your trade-ins"? (I laughed when I read the review from Hilary S. She needs to take her box of books to Goodwill, or have a yard-sale. Yes, if you expect to pay fifty-cents or less for a book, then I guess $3.50 is "extremely overpriced". Her is perfect example of someone could not or wouldn't be able to own their own business, because she doesn't understand the concept of "expenses vs. profits". I wonder if she owned this business, (impossible of course.....) and the majority of customers came in thinking like she did, "not planning to spend any money". Would she know why-- after a few months of her (belief) "giving customers credit for the books they brought, & subtracting it from the total price of the books, and as a result people would be walking out of the store "having spent no money"....would she be able to figure out why she couldn't pay for expenses & why she couldn't make a living ...& she was having to "close her business"?) This is no Barnes & Noble or Borders, so don't expect big and flashy. It's actually kind of a "hole-in-the-wall", cramped and a little dingy stuck in the corner of a seedy little strip mall -- but crammed with books, thousands of them. But this is a really fun place to find books, new and used, at excellent prices and with the help of the two owners, Tom and Melanie, who couldn't be friendlier or more helpful. Here you can trade in your own used books for credit, which you can apply to purchases of their books, which is convenient and a good deal. The place has also become the headquarters for a number of special interest groups, which gives it a kind of clubhouse feel sometimes. Every time I've been in there I've encountered other "regulars" just hanging out and talking books with Tom and Melanie. During the past 2 weeks, I have rediscovered Craig Thomas, a Cold War thriller writer (Firefox, Firefox Down), and have greatly enjoyed his Lion's Run, now out of print. I inhaled that book, traded it in and picked up three more -- again, all out of print and unavailable except in a place like this. I strongly recommend this place to all avid readers. I just love the selection of books and trade in program. With 4 kids, this is a great option and when they're done with the books, we can trade them back in, sure there are some minor details how the program works, but no matter how you look at it, it's great for mom's. I was completely unhappy with the trade in value I was given for the books I took in. I should have done my homework better and found a more equitable place to sell my books. I found 2 that pay twice the amount I received here. The customer service was good and I did find a book I had been looking for, but I will not be selling anymore books to this store. read more
