Customer service, crazy how Customer service does not exist kids make no eye contact and aviod communicating at all costs,and very unorganized. I used to teach small classes here untill they stopped assisting me with set up and even communicating with me I had the managers email as well as cell number. Learning lesson for me never come back to this location so sad because I used to buy all of my books and school materials here. Professionalism and additional training for management and books elders is highly recommended. Don't apply y here if you really enjoy books,they never communicate with candidates let alone people actually in the store. After not hearing my name for an hour and 15 minutes, I went to get my stuff back-I asked to get it back and saw they'd actually set aside 5 books. I said I hadn't heard my name called. This Bookman's location is pretty large, so there is a lot to check out here! Most of the square footage is taken up by books and they have a pretty solid selection. Some new, some used, so you're bound to find something that fits into your interests. They have a pretty decent selection of comics and graphic novels too. Used Records, DVDs, and CDs are also available, and sometimes you can find a few gems for a decent price. Always fun to poke around and see what they may have. For those of us who are always looking for a good bookstore, look no further! Bookmans has it all from books, records, musical instruments, toys, games, movies, and so much more. This local business has two locations in the Greater Phoenix area and other locations outside of the area. I only learned about the hidden gem in the area called Bookmans over the last few years, but I've frequented it often enough since then. Most bookstores are easy enough to walk around and find exactly what you're looking for. Bookmans is huge! While you can certainly look at a map, it's a bit of a maze that is a true joy to get lost in yet at the same time, it is organized in its own way. They have a great selection and always have new books coming in thanks to the many community members selling their books and other items to Bookmans. They have a Harry Potter section of toys, books, and more. They have a toys, games, and puzzles section. They have comics and magazines. There is something for everyone! If you have books to sell, give them a try as they offer such a reasonable amount (more than you'd expect to be offered) in store credit or a smaller amount in cash. They are also faster at coming up with an offer than other used bookstores I have visited. I have seen other reviews where concerns were shared about the staff. Based on my own experiences, they have always been friendly, professional, and helpful. They are also involved in hosting special events, contests, and other promotions. For instance, this summer (similar to other times of the year), they are hosting artists at their stores each month. Then, on Paperback Book Day and Book Lovers Day, they are holding drawings for a free Cameo. It's always fun to see what they come up with next. Bookmans is also active in the Greater Phoenix community and a part of Local First Arizona. As a part of Indie Week (June 26-July 4), they are being spotlighted as a local business. Please Bookmans hire people who don't look inconvenienced and angry every time a customer asks for assistance. I do not understand having half of the collectible stock upfront behind the register if some people are annoyed when people have to ask to look at the items in stock. It's a nice store, but as the prices continue to go up every year, it's sad to see the quality of service go down. I understand having a bad day at work, but being rude is uncalled for. First let me say I genuinely love places like bookman's I have frequented used book stores a lot including bookman's. However what I can't say I tolerate well is rudeness. I suffer from PTSD, the masks for covid protection are something I wear but occasionally I need to pull it away or pull it down to relieve anxiety. It's just for a second and honestly not within 6' of anyone. Twice employees were rude in confronting me about it. When I explained that I suffer a disability I was told they offer curbside service... this is a used bookstore, without browsing to see what is in stock and what condition it's in curb side service is absolutely 100% pointless and a cop-out in handling the problem certain disability issues affect people. It was inconsiderate and insensitive. The store however had a good supply of books and other things. But again I had to look in the books to find the right volume of information, an employee who doesn't know the details simply couldn't do this. read more

They have such a great selection of Knick knacks, books, music and toys and offer fair pricing on your trades. This store is full of tchotchke's and collectibles. That's interesting. They have video games and board games. Controllers, consoles, and electronics. There are instruments, sheet music and things related to the musical industry. Toys Dolls Star wars Oh and they have books. All genre's. I've loved Bookmans for many years! Just recently had an amazing experience. Though the store isn't up-to-date on tech, I asked for help finding a book and a very sweet employee helped me find it. Another book we couldn't find, and she double checked to see what it said in their system. Above and beyond customer service always! An Arizona mainstay. Been going here since I could barely drive myself across town with my learner's permit and it's always the best. I've found so many gems at all the Bookman's locations over the years and look forward to a stop whenever I'm in the area. I've gotten rare art books, vintage video games, great records, musical instruments, piles of lovely books to read, and the occasional oddball find, like old NASA imagery from the Voyager probe. Just delightful. You never know what you might find! I am happy to see Bookman's continue to be a great place that makes Arizona unique. Staff are always funky and knowledgeable. WoW sensory overload. Bookman's is truly incredible and unique. It's a blast from the past- reminding me of Blockbuster, Boarders books, and Sam Ash music store. All items are used or "vintage" as they say. Some items are lightly used. I had difficulty choosing between Jessica Simpsons biography and The Subtle Art if Not Giving a F... before choosing the latter with mild regret. I will definitely be back again soon. read more

I will not be returning, and this is why!! So I went into Bookmans last night. While walking inside, I walked past a woman who did nothing but look me up and down and roll her eyes. (At this point, I didn't even know she was an employee; she was wearing no nametag or anything.) I walked to the back counter where the games are sold and stood there for maybe 7 minutes and never saw anybody that looked like an employee. After waiting, I went to the front counter that had a really long line with only one cashier and noticed an employee. I called out "excuse me, sir." And was greeted with a rude "give me a minute," and the employee never even turned around to look at me. I kind of stood there in shock for 30 seconds, to which he came back and asked in a rude tone "What can I do for you, sir?" I said I have these game books that I'd like to trade in. He responded in a tone as if I worked there and was asking a stupid question, "It's over there in the book section." At this point, I'm pretty annoyed but just want to sell my books since I'm moving and don't need them. I walk over to the books counter and see an empty counter with an employee over there by himself shutting off a PS4. He purposely kept his attention on the PlayStation that was powering down as to not look my direction until the phone rang when all of a sudden his time was free and he was the most friendly employee on the phone. Was never acknowledged by this employee for the approx. 3 minutes I stood there. As I decided enough was enough and proceeded to leave, the same woman that looked me up and down was walking behind the counter and still never said a word. Every encounter with every employee was awful. I left and went to ZIA RECORDS just a couple of exits away and had AMAZING service. read more

Had a bad experience today trying to buy earrings at the jewelry counter at Phoenix Bookman's. I and another customer had to ask for help twice before an employee named Cloud begrudgingly unlocked the case. I should add that there were no customers waiting in line and she wasn't busy. The first thing she said was, "There's a fifteen-minute time limit to look at jewelry." My impression was that she didn't want to bother with either of us. The other customer was picking out lots of rings and taking a while. My daughter was waiting outside in the hot car. So I asked Cloud if she was only allowed to show jewelry to one person at a time. She said, "Yes. And only one ring at a time. You can go to the counter and ask someone else to help you if you want, I'm only one person." When I went to report her rude behavior to Jon, the shift manager, he was defensive, telling me it was their policy to only show one piece of jewelry at a time. I tried to explain that the problem wasn't their policy, but the girl's rude attitude. He just kept repeating that Cloud was following Bookman's policy. So much for Bookman's supposed "core value" about respecting people. I've been coming here since they opened. Not anymore. I understand retail customers can be awful. But it's unprofessional (and ignorant) to assume we ALL are. It's apparent he was only interested in justifying Cloud's inappropriate behavior instead of dealing with a customer service issue. I'll be filing a complaint with corporate and the store's general manager. Maybe THEY care about their customers. read more

This store is overflowing with books, records, movies, games, musical instruments and strangely... housewares. I took a few books in to trade and most were rejected. A good reminder for me to not hold onto books so long! I had trouble figuring out the layout of the store at first, because there's so much packed in there. I wasn't able to find most the titles on my want to read list, but I did find one and that made my trade worthwhile. I'm won't likely be a frequent customer, but it's good to know that there's a Bookman's in Phoenix. read more

I'm not sure how I feel about this store. I used to go many years ago and I loved it then. Now I feel like they have more trinkets then books! And they overcharge for their trinkets, which most are used and some in bad shape. Their kid area is nice. Both of my children loved the area and said it was cozy. The book prices are still decent. We went for my sons birthday since he is part of their kids club and had received a $10 off any in store item. The bathrooms were clean and books were nicely organized. Staff was super friendly and asked if we needed any help, which we didn't but was nice. Parking here is a nightmare. There's not enough spots on a Saturday. Might be better during the week. Overall I don't think we will come back any time soon. We'd rather stick to Savers or Goodwill for books. We've had great luck there finding books we want for such a good price! read more

All the people on here saying the staff is rude, are probably the same people that don't believe in vaccines or that Biden is president. It is Arizona after all. Always such a fun place to hang out! I went in to drop off quite a few books to see if I could get money for them. I believe they took about 4 books. I was surprised and disappointed that I was offered about $3 for the books or a credit of $13. I don't get to that part of town often but I did not want to just get a very minimal amount for the books so I went with the in-store credit. there's so much to look at not only books but puzzles, toys, CDs, DVD's, jewelry, knick knacks and magazines. The staff are very friendly and helpful and are organized when it comes to bringing things in to sell to them. They've got that whole system down pat. I found that the cost to buy something there was okay but not a huge bargain to necessarily brag about. read more

They were all secured in such a way that they couldn't be played. I asked to test a few and was told "we don't do that". What??? How absurd. This is a pretty fun place to browse. The selection is actually pretty huge. And they sell more than just books too. There is a used home decor/board games/kitchen item area in the back and funko pops and figurines at the front. The manga collection is quite extensive. The shop is just packed full of things and the vibe is very nice. However, the books are priced pretty much at retail value of a new book (even if the binding is coming undone) and sometimes finding the book you want can be confusing with how the shop is set up. The stuffed animals at the front looked pretty gross the last time I visited. I would say it is a great place to stop by if you have an hour or two to kill, as it is a pretty large shop and contains some fun items to look at read more

Magazines have a way of piling up month after month, and I get a lot of them every week. No, I'm not a hoarder. I can't stand clutter, so I get rid of them as soon I get them. Where do I get them? Well I travel for a living and people leave them on the aircraft all the time. Instead of having them discarded, I collect them and recycle them. I also use my credit card mileage points and coke reward points to get free magazines. I do not even drink soda, but I get the bottle caps codes from the flights. Why waste them? I do not even read most of the magazines, and I have taken some that are still in their plastic packaging. That way they can resell them. Why? I trade them out to get my favorite books and electronics. One way to keep them from piling up is to take them to Bookman's. I love this store, and most of the employees I have encountered have been pretty congenial. I've only had a few setbacks in the past, but they have since been resolved. I'm so glad the manager took notice because I'm a loyal customer, and I keep coming back. One thing I've learned about successful trading is to bring only brand new and current issues, so I try to take my magazines as soon as I get them. Do not bring anything that has a tear or pen marks and try to bring a lot, so it would be worth your time. I try to come here only when I have a lot of magazines because I do not like to waste gas. I am trying to reduce my carbon foot print, so I take this into consideration. I found a Todd Oldham craft book that I had been wanting, so I was super excited about that. I love their arts and craft section, so I can get ideas on recycling and refurbishing. I do a lot of DeCoumpage projects, and I have even made a basket using art magazines similar to the one that Urban Outfitters used to sell. However, my favorite part of the store is the electronic section. I've gotten cool stuff here including a Kindle, Hard Drives and Ipod Speakers. I've been trying my best to reduce my carbon footprint, so I am trying to green my lifestyle. Recycling is one of the best way to do it. read more

On July 4, 2023, I gave Bookman's another chance. Unaware of their holiday hours-I googled it. While I was in the store I heard an employee answer the phone with "yes, we are open today" not "hello, thank you for calling Bookman's" or anything similar to a professional greeting. After the employee hung up, she started talking about how she gets these kinda calls every holiday and it's just easier answer the calls with that "yes, we are open". Apparently, "hello" is too much for her. The staff then proceeded to mock the caller about not looking up the holiday hours. I told the employee that the "in-store customers can hear her talking about potentially customers, and it's rude." I tried, and as much as I love discovering new reads, Bookman's is definitely not the place I would recommend. The staff would benefit from some training in customer service. read more

I enjoy coming here the books are a hit and miss pricing most of the time is a good deal sometimes I do find some books more expensive. They didn't have a certain comic I was looking for but that's pretty Normal for this series. People are always nice and I definitely spend good money when I come. So here I am about to walk into Bookman's, and as I walked underneath the canopy in front of the entrance store, where one stands to be allowed in, I looked at the security person as he waved me to walk right on in. In these changing times, here I was wearing my mask just like every customer and employee was. So I started to browse thinking I knew which the section was that had what I was looking for, and no luck. So I headed to the counter to ask one of the staff where the jigsaw puzzles were. The nice gentleman pointed to the direction of the section where I could find them. Sure enough, there was a wall full of jigsaw puzzles. Each box was categorized according to the number of pieces, which was nice. Once I made my selection, I decided to continue browsing through the rest of the store. I have to tell you this is a unique place to shop for used items. Everything is discounted, from musical instruments, books, and other items of interest to you. They even have a large music section you can browse through. The staff here is very helpful, and are not hesitant at all about helping you in any way. As these times are so different, just remember that only so many people are allowed into the store. Since this is June already, and we are experiencing a three digit heat wave, I don't know if the canopy in front of the store is enough to protect you from this heat but, it will keep the sun off of you. This particular store is located in a strip mall on the northwest corner of 19th Avenue and Northern Avenue. I couldn't browse for very long as my wife was next door shopping at Sprouts. I did feel safe shopping here, plus I found what I was looking for. Everyone was keeping their distance from each other. Hope to return here, and just browse around a bit longer. If you are in the area don't hesitate to stop by, and give yourself time to fully look around. Zia Records has a better CD & Vinyl selection but this place has a MUCH better magazine, video game and system, and DVD/TV show/film selection. They don't have the best selection of books either. Your best bet is to call ahead of time if you're looking for a specific book or wander through the establishments "Book Gallery" or "Books" instead (huge used book establishments). read more

They give me 80 I'm store credit for the first giant load of books and two stuffed animals I guess worth more than all the other books cuz the second load coming knowing that I donated the rest the last time only offers me 30 for store credit this time for about 500 more books. This store has a really cool variety of books and media and I'd love to score it higher, but they need to find a way to move the counter area away from the books because there's always a loud group of giggling and screaming employees causing a distraction. There's always been an unwritten rule about being quiet and respectful in book stores, but this place is more like a nursery than a book store. read more
