Having forgotten to pack a book for my trip to Dubuque, I stopped in here to pick one up. This is a very nice bookstore. It reminds me of a Barnes and Noble, but on a smaller scale. They have a good selection of books and magazines. And if you're a fan of Yankee Candles (like I am), they sell those as well. The staff is friendly and helpful. I ended up purchasing a biography about Frank Sinatra. You can also order from Books a Million online. Looks like I have another resource for book shopping. read more

Very nice staff. A chain/mall bookstore that is consistent with its brand: best sellers, remainders [aka books no one wanted to buy in the first place, or books which publishers printed too many copies of] at bargain basement prices, gifts, manga and magazines. Huge kids' section. They have a seating area in front of a coffee shop that may or may not be open on any given day (it was not open on two occasions when I visited in the last month). read more

If you ever want to know how a 5-Star review experience can quickly turn into 1-Star, go and buy something at Books-a-Million. The store itself, meaning a large structure full of products, was awesome. They had things I had been looking for for quite a while, and two of us happily grabbed a few items to purchase. The selection and environment instantly won us over! That alone would have given them a full five stars . . . But then we met the cashier, hereafter to be referred to as "Upseller-on-Crack." Mr. Upseller-on-Crack, a delightful hipster, decided we were his new best friends, shallowly complimenting our selections trying to make some kind of meaningless connection with us. That, on its own, can be endearing in its own sad little way, but it doesn't stop there. Upseller-on-Crack asked me to join their annoying something-or-other club, continuing to interrupt me when I said no, and then went on to ask me to donate to another this-or-that, again interrupting me as I declined. Only an angry face eventually shut him up. I paid, and he proceeded to do worse with my companion. He gave the same shallow commentary on her purchase, a Harry Potter item, insisting she should buy another Harry Potter item, and then went on to try to entice her in whatever that stupid club was, solicit the same donation, and then proceeded to put down a piece of paper, on top of her items, and told her to circle three magazine choices she will receive for free. When you have to physically remove a sign up sheet that they place, obstructing your purchases, something is wrong. Let me be perfectly clear, in her case, there were FOUR things she had to verbally and/or physically decline. That is ridiculous. Now, we know it is company policy to push employees to upsell like this, and Upseller-on-Crack's position depends on his meeting a quota of idiotic things. So individually it is not entirely his fault, it is the company's. Still, you don't interrupt customers and try to corner them, so to speak. Listen, BAM, if your customers are forced to show restraint and are made to become defensive because of your tactics, you are NOT providing good customer service. If people leave, frazzled and angry, they will avoid your store in the future. There is a nearby Barnes and Noble where people understand the meaning of, "No." And there is Amazon . . . read more

Walked around the store for 40 minutes store clerks ignored me. content having their own conversation and I had to call the store to get anyone's attention. Book that I wanted to get did not even get put on the Shelf 2 weeks after its release. And it's price was $15 more in store that on the website. This company, and this store's practices are the reason why literary consumers buy e-books, new books, and used books online. I actually forgot why I stopped buying real books and then I visited this store. While I was browsing and purchasing titles for myself, I came across the sports section. I found a Chicago Cubs books that I wanted to purchase for my boyfriend and his brother as they are both large Cubs fans. Both of the copies were the same in every way, shape, and form (i.e. hardcover, barcode, edition, etc.). However, one of the books had a bargain sticker on the back of the book. This sticker contained the SAME TITLE OF THE BOOK and BARCODE on the back of the hardcover jacket on both books. Now, what I seemingly thought was an error, one being tagged and not the other, turned out to be a rather asinine situation/explanation by the "manager" that night, (I'm convinced she was a shift manager rather than the store manager). Here is what she told me: "The one with the sticker is from the bargain books table while the other is from the regular shelf. The book without the sticker is the full price while the book with the sticker is the bargain price." I explained to her that I found them on the same shelf in the sports section among the paperback version of the same book, that the book without the bargain sticker had the same barcode as the bargain sticker, and I can't fathom why the same book in every way would be $20.00 less than the other. She then explained that they have to charge by what is or isn't on the book. This is the most asinine and ridiculous thing I have ever heard. I have never in my entire adult life been to an establishment where I wasn't honored the better price for the same item. I cannot believe that consumers are shopping here and getting ripped off by them charging two drastically different prices for the same item. Honestly, when this company goes out of business I will clap. Physically clap. Then I will purchase a real book on Amazon that is 45% less in price. read more

We were looking a cookbook online and the price had said it was $22.20 except when we had gotten to the store the actual price was $30.00. No where on the site did it say whether the price was meant for online or in store. Most websites specify to avoid the confusion. When we brought it to a store clerks attention she proceeded to check the same page and told us that no that was the online price even though it didn't say but it was supposed to. She just apologized and we told her we'd order of it online instead. She was unfriendly and didn't really seem to care that we were upset about the issue. Not very happy. Not planning on going there again. read more

The books here seem to be over priced by 100-250% they put there own price tag bar Coad stickers over the price of the book and it winds up being like I seid way up there out of curiosity I bought two book's for fifty dollars witch mind you by the time I got home pealed the store tags off added the manufacturers suggested price's added up to like twenty three dollars, so... yeah now we know how the CEO of this company makes enough to ride around in a porche and live in a fancy house all the while the rest of us cant even afford a good book to read being that I noticed that once a BAM* (*books-a-million) show's up ALL of the small book stores go out of business, they offer you discounts that don't sae you all that much if anything at all it is a sad day when a big bock store like Wal-Mart kicks your ass with not only there prices but help as well and they do all the same things such as home delivery and shop on line; So stay far and wide away from this store you'll get lost in there and never find an employee to show you out!! Totally harassed by employee to buy the "discount card". After declining to buy the discount card, the cashier went on to tell me about the "benefits" of the membership. Again I declined. She continued to tell me more about the card. I told her I had the membership in the past understood what it was and NO I did not want to renew it. She once again gave me the list of benefits. Again declined -- still very politely. At the end of the transaction, she told me the awards and savings I would receive if I signed up right then. I again said no thank you. Her response: "Really?! Even after all of that savings and you still do not want the membership?" I don't need to be harassed and judged about how I choose to spend my money. I will not be spending another penny at BAM. To make matters worse, two weeks later, I received an email that my membership was automatically renewed! $25 was charged to my credit card without my authorization. What a scam - just like the magazine scam they pull. River Lights all the way. Even if they don't have what you want in stock -- they'll order if for you and you'll have it within days.
