Honestly maybe this just isn't the bookstore for me and that's a personal preference. However I felt like there was nothing remotely recent in here, again it could be that I'm not their demographic. They definitely had cool books but it gave more of like a reference book vibe, library-ish. All the books have plastic covering them and while I know it protects them I feel like it takes away from the books. The store itself needs some fresh air, it's super stuffy and has a musky smell. What a cute little bookshop!!!! This is more of a specialized store for beautiful copies of used and vintage books. There were definitely some rare hidden gems here that I would've loved to have purchased but I have no more room at home! I'll def be keeping an eye out on this place and the wonderful editions they procure! The lady at the front desk was super nice and was kind enough to show us books. This is a small book shop that looks like a cheap printing place from outside. I came at 11, when they were supposed to open, but they didn't open until about 11:45am. Before you go, ALWAYS call first to see if they're open. Or you might be standing outside for an hour. It smells like an old library inside. There's not a huge selection. I recently discovered this quaint little bookshop, and I'm so glad I found it. I love to visit independent bookstores and browse for hidden treasures. From the outside, the bookshop looks inconspicuous. But don't let that fool you. This store is a charming little hole in the wall with an excellent collection of used and vintage books. I spent a few hours just browsing around. Lisa, the store owner, was very friendly and helped me find a couple of books I was looking for. There is a bit of everything here for everyone. I came in to browse and picked up four books. The only section I thought was lacking was philosophy, but that's just personal preference. Browsing through a bookstore has always been a favorite pastime of mine. I can spend hours doing so. Nothing can replace the experience of being surrounded by treasure troves of knowledge. I just moved to the valley, and I've been scouting all the independent bookshops around me, and I can say that Books On The Boulevard is one of the best in the area. I really do hope bookstores survive in the age of Amazon and people not going out like they used to. In many ways, this is the perfect used book store* *if you are not looking for something in particular but looking to wander and discover. Small but clean and well organized, it's a great place to spend an hour looking for your next read - there are plenty of things you've heard of on the shelves, with enough interesting things you haven't to flip through. For me, this is the purpose of a used book store - to explore leisurely surrounded by the warmth of used books and discover some unknown treasures - I love that feeling. But if you're looking to grab 3-5 specific things from your Goodreads "to read list," it won't be large enough to House them all. There is an extensive section of Judaica and Christian scholarship, a small section of graphic novels, a medium sized kid section, a great selection of art and coffee table books, and a medium selection of all the others you'd expect (lit, US history, world history, etc.) All in all it was nice, I found 4 books that seemed interesting, and I'll be back. Came in Saturday morning just to browse out of curiosity and ended up leaving this store with 11 phenomenal books! This bookshop has a really fabulous selection of both classics and rare/out-of-print books. I purchased several art and visual reference books which often go for $40/50+ when I've found them at other bookstores, at about $10-25 each! Seriously, absolute gems and the owner was so sweet and helpful. Helped get my books to my car and gave great advice to find what I was looking for. I love Books on the Boulevard for many reasons! I moved to LA in Oct. 2014 and ever since I discovered it, it is a book store that I always pop into! 1. Though small, I appreciate its' size (as I can become easily overwhelmed by walking up and down rows and rows of book shelves - which there's a time and place for, but this store is a nice reprieve). - It has a pretty good size kids section at the very back of the store ranging from old to new (w/in 10 years) copies! 2. It has an online presence!!! You can look up the books online before stopping in! I would say all second hand bookstores do not have this awesome feature because the turn around can be so quick! - most books have photos of the cover along with the price - If you want to know more about the book you will have to open up a second window on your laptop/phone as the descriptions are not included (which I can understand why) 3. It's such a pleasant atmosphere. Every time I have stopped in, Lisa (the owner) says hello and I don't feel like the conversation is awkward (as sometimes with other stores it can be!) 4. Even if I don't purchase anything, it's a great spot to wander into and peruse! read more

I was strolling down Ventura blvd trying to kill time. I saw a rack of sale books and took a look! I loved what this store had to offer so I walked inside. Lisa, the owner greeted me kindly and let me look around. She has books dating back to the 1700s! She let me take a look at them. They were in great shape. All the books here are in good shape! I found The Sonnets and King Lear by William Shakespeare. I didn't have much time to look around but Lisa had some rare books that are hard to get your hands on. After lunch at Casa Vega my friend and I decided to take a little stroll down Ventura Blvd and happened upon this place. I always love going through the stacks at used book stores so I wanted to take a quick gander. It's not very big but it seemed well-organized and the books were in good shape. Consequently, you're not going to find the really cheapie used books (there were some sale carts out front), but I did find a gently used copy of "Room" that was a few bucks off full price. The lady at the front was really nice and chatted with me for a bit about the book while she rang me up. The place had a good, pleasant vibe--I'd definitely visit again the next time I'm in the area. This place is a total hidden gem, sitting on Ventura Boulevard it blends in with all of the shops around it so make sure to keep your eyes peeled when looking for it. I went in searching for some philosophy books and was amazed by the selection they have. I had to hold myself back from going and buying up a bunch of books from different genres. A very diverse and interesting selection of books that you won't find at many other bookstores. The woman at the desk was very warm and welcoming. They arrived to me sooner than expected and were packaged professionally so there would be no damage. The books were in great condition exactly as was described, with a clear plastic slip cover. We came in looking for a Samoan language book and Lisa was kind enough to help us out. She found a old Mormon learning Samoan book but it was very vintage. It was really cool and I really wanted it but we were looking for something more up to date. We didn't find the book we wanted but that didn't stop her. She started to look for different options for us and found us the book that we were looking for on a website. She was really helpful and I appreciate her taking her time and helping us search for a book that wasn't in her store. We will definitely be coming back because we did find a lot of books that we wanted to purchase that we couldn't find anywhere else. This place is small, organized and the owner is very nice. The selection is minimal compared other used bookstores in the valley, probably because they only seem to carry books in really good condition. On my visit, I saw a lot of newly printed books you could probably get at Borders as well as some very nice older collectible books. I didn't end up buying anything because nothing drew out an "oh my gosh I have to have this book!" from me. Also, most books are priced relatively high, in the $30-$40 range, and I saw a few $150 books as well. Nothing I saw was under $15. Yipes! But again, these are older hardcovers in really good condition (and are probably rare collector's items). So if you are a collector of out-of-print hardcovers in great condition, I would recommend this store. And if you a just a book lover in general, it wouldn't hurt to go check out this store. You may stumble upon something well worth the $15+ you spend on it! And just to explain my rating, I gave this store 3/5 instead of 5/5 because of the relatively small selection of books, and relatively high prices (compared to other used bookstores in the area). read more

I have been wanting to visit this shop for months now and finally went in last week. I was expecting to be in and out in ten minutes, but ended up sprawled on the floor at this gem for hours trying to narrow down my pile of finds. I collect coffee table books as well as antique lit and I was extremely impressed with the curated selection Lisa has. She is also extremely helpful! I will definitely be making a regular visit to this store. I ended up with two Freuds, a Sinatra coffee table book, a beautiful Michelangelo one and this incredibly old and detailed huge Vanity Fair. In June of 2012 I purchased a used book "Soteriology" 3rd edition, 1919 by Msgr. Joseph Pohle, PhD, not realizing this was from a Roman Catholic perspective, from "Books On The Boulevard" in Sherman Oaks, CA and upon taking a look inside I found that this was from the library of Charles Weinig dated Sept 17, 1919. Charles was the son of John (Johann) and Rosina (Witt) Weinig, German immigrants. Just a little info on him he was born Sep 22 1894 and died Dec 1944. He came from a family of which three of the four sons were Catholic priests the only one who wasn't was John Martin Weinig. Charles became the parish priest after succeeding his brother Francis Xavier Weinig as the pastor of St Josephs parish in St Genevieve County MO. Upon discovering the identity of Charles I immediately obtained information of the parish and created a family tree for him at Ancestry.com to see if I could find any living relatives that would like to have the book. I have surmised the book ended up in California via his brother Albert Joseph Weinig who died in Riverside, California in 1956. I eventually sent the book to St Josephs with the instructions if any relatives of Father Weinig come to claim the book. Hopefully one of the relatives has claimed the book of their dear relative. read more
