Honestly, this is my go-to spot for Record Store Day. This is why I went in recently but I've been countless times. I love this place. Always find something cool and the prices are great. Their prices on new discs are cheaper than any big Hollywood store. Their used stuff is every changing and better priced than Discogs. Their 99 cent section is very cool and often have some gems in there. I always get a stack of items whenever I go there. The staff is always friendly and helpful to me. They participate in record store day and it was painless without waiting in a line for hours. Stopped by this record shop after grabbing lunch with a friend and really enjoyed our time here. First off, the store is extremely organized and easy to navigate through the various media types. They had new vinyls in one section, used vinyls, CDs, and cassette tapes. They further organized by genre and alphabetical order which made it easy to look and browse around. Prices of the new vinyls were inconsistent with online prices but I didn't mind paying a little bit extra to support a small local business. Also not going through the hassle of shipping is a plus. Things to note is that there were no parking lots or structures nearby. So be ready to parallel park on the street in front or on the side near the residential area. Small business Saturday purchases are my fav! I wandered into Freakbeat because I'm still not back in my office and Amoeba isn't my most convenient home store at the moment. I decided to shop in my actual neighborhood. I'm going 0 to 100 with building a vinyl collection after ordering Booze and Vinyl, a cocktail making book that pairs cocktails with vinyl. I love adult bevvies and music so it was the perfect gift to myself. I'm great at making cocktails and spinning records to them just makes perfect sense, can't think of a better recipe. I came through the door with my post it note of eight records I wanted in hand, and have now added thirteen more to this list. I of course wanted Used, I don't like purchasing any thing new but I couldn't find any of them. They had three of my eight, New and I chose one (Bob Marley/Legend) for now. I'll return often to keep checking their Used selection and need to stop back asap to search for the others I've added to my list. This is a great store, with a great energy I totally see how record shopping can make for the perfect solo activity, or a really cute date. Perfect neighborhood store with great service! So cute! First time here. I was on Ventura yesterday and found this record shop walking by. They are still masking and provide one if you need it when you walk in. They have a pretty good new and used record selection and a large cd selection (which I did not explore). I found some pretty unique records and will be back to explore more. This place is cool. I like this place. No, let me correct myself, I LOVE THIS PLACE. long on my bucket list of record shops in the greater LA basin, Freakbeat Records is 100% old-school. For collectors, old-school is a good thing because it means the staff is very knowledgeable about what they are selling. What I liked: Firstly, there's a huge jazz collection, primarily on vinyl, but well represented on CD too. My biggest score though was blues on CD, followed by some outstanding jazz on vinyl. For collectors there is a preference for early or first pressings, and it takes years of research and experience to develop a,sense of what is what. Needless to say, careful examination of the playing surfaces, preferably in daylight, is, required for used records. Is that a deep, feelable scratch? Or, is it a surface scuffwith no affect on the playback? Secondly, after praising owner earlier, another reason they rock is that they have three, yes, three, turntables and amps with headphones to preview unsealed records. For CD collectors they provide two CD players and headphones so the likelihood of having to wait for someone is quite low. Parking: Street only, and be sure to pay, I saw the "meter bitch" on patrol and handing out tickets (plus, they take pictures). We lucked out and got a spot in front. Prices: After hitting a dozen or so places in LA, the IE and OC, I found their prices on par for the most rare and collectable items, but well under the mean for CDs and general stock used and out of print items. For example, I obtained a few promo double records for $15, which was fair considering the artists (Miles Davis et al.). Altogether, I left with nearly a dozen CDs and seven records for just under $100 (they gave me a 10% break even though I hadn't exceeded $100). All-in-all, Freakbeat Records is the perfect place to start building up a diverse collection in nearly every style and genre. read more

The place is a little cozy store where you are guaranteed a much better customer service than the one you would find at big retailers such as FYE or Tower Records. Freakbeat is also more than fair with trade-ins is long as you have quality titles that are in good resell-able condition. Excellent used selection. Rock section leans classic but found some psych, punk and metal strewn in. Great used international selection compared to most neighborhood shops around town. The jazz they had out was a goldmine. Very reasonable prices, it's not a buck-a-record shop but not much higher and the quality is top notch. These guys really seem to give a damn if the records they sell play clean. They also have a dollar bin and new records but I didn't get to scope those out. CD selection looked about as extensive as vinyl. They take COVID seriously but handled a couple jokers who tried to test them very well, owners seem like solid guys. One of my new favorite spots, will be back soon. read more

Freakbeat has nice helpful employees, which is not common for a record store. My teen daughter is just getting into CD's and they special ordered one she was looking for. It arrived several days later and then they personally called me about it. Great customer service! I used to only buy records in here, but now that I started looking at their CD's, I can see there are many great titles and deals in their CD section as well. They even have cool music magazines and books, mostly aimed at the more advanced record collector. And don't forget to look up above you at the wall of rare records! read more

Decent prices, great selection of new and used. Cool store and easy to navigate. Clean and organized. Lots of jazz and folk (and of course rock, pop, etc.) HOWEVER...I knocked them down two stars because I've been here twice and both times I was there the owners/employees spent the entire time talking smack about customers. Not the customers present, but past customers or the regulars. Sure every store has its share of annoying customers, but employees should not be venting about "idiots" and saying things like "don't tell him I got these records in- I don't want to deal with his crap" or " don't charge double or anything I'll deal with him when he comes in"....very unprofessional and rude. Clean up your act guys and maybe I'll be back. Until then I'll take my business elsewhere where they vent in private, not loud enough for customers to hear. read more

This record store is for the man of culture. Very cool and knowledgeable staff that are stern on enforcing COVID safety which is relieving. Freak beat has an awesome collection of used records where you can find some good stuff for ridiculously low prices. That is not to say their collection of new records should be ignored. This place is the last of a dying breed. Rhino records *poof* Arons records *poof* Poobahs *half poof* (It's just not the same since it moved out of that house and onto Colorado) But Freakbeat is alive and well and going on 4 1/2 years old. It's storefront is a welcoming warm brick facade embracing either side of a tapering entrance made up of glass window panes pasted with poster art of musicians current and past. You are kind of funneled down into their recessed front door that opens upon the quintessential record shop of my high school days. Upon the right you will find three turntables set out for anyone who wants to sample a used album before committing to the ultimate act of taking it home to join the rest of the family. There is a good deal of vinyl to choose from however the selection is severely limited to Rock, and Jazz. The same could be said about their CD collection. The new and used CD's are laid out together so you have to look at them all, the exception being a little open room towards the front that is dedicated solely to .99 CD's and vinyl. The register is set up on a podium so that the record dude is set up higher than you which I'm sure is as it should be because the record dude guy is usually an audiofile who knows more than you and has better taste than you and always has more pairs of converse shoes in his closet and definitely more plain T shirts of varying colors etc. But in this case, the record dude was seriously cool and had no attitude at all. You can trade in your records and CD's here too, but just like way back in high school, the gems that you were forced to trade in because the change in your Sparklets bottle bank was running low and you just couldn't scrape up enough for gas money to get you to the concert, still won't fetch you more than a few pennies to scratch your @ss with and you might be forced to take credit instead and take a bus to the concert and forget about getting a T shirt. They have a small Hip Hop section and I was able to score the new Wu Tang Clan album "8 dimensions" USED for $8.99. This album just came out two days ago! It is amazing by the way, one of the best albums I've heard in a very long time, and I was also able to fish out the Beasties "Paul's Boutique" for $5. With those two finds I cruised for an hour in ungodly traffic to my next destination actually hoping for more traffic so I could finish the albums.
