I've been having my hair done at an Aveda salon for over 20 years and this was the most uncomfortable experience. My stylist was friendly enough. Unfortunately, she seemed extremely rushed. The application of hair dye was messy and washing out my hair was very tense and harsh. The straightening of my hair was rough - and felt like something was scraping my hair verse smoothing it out. Fortunately, the color is nice but the path to get it was not pleasant. Then to get to the end and pay for it was a bit shocking. I'm fully aware of how much it typically cost because I've been having this done for so long , this time it was WAY over priced. The experience was not worth it!!! read more

She could easily replicate the style and color I had - which is exactly what I was looking for. To me, hair had always been hair. I decided I wanted a change and was hoping transition from dark brown all one length to red/copper with bangs. Had my hair cut and colored on Saturday. My son is a ginger but I never imagined I could achieve his natural color. I've had stylists all over the country/world & OMG you should see my hair now!!! Based on a picture of Nicole Kidman from season 1 of Big Little Lies, Maren transformed my dark brown hair into Nicole Kidman's hair from season 1 of BLL. Carly is the best hairstylist in town. No, really. Upon moving to Missoula I scheduled appointments at Twigs, Burtellos, Magestic Madness, and Tangles. All = fail. Carly actually listens to what you want, and is even able to guess at what you want if you're a little vague (I often am). She's creative and fabulous! I just got back from my first ever appointment at Boom Swagger with Brooke. I was terrified of this place only because of the scary name, but soon realized the space and the people are super unpretentious and not as hipster-y as the name sounds. Brooke was awesome! Fun to talk to and a haircut that I LOVE. When booking my appointment, I was told that Brooke is great with guys who have medium to long-length hair and turns out they were right. I brought in numerous pictures of what I wanted my hair to look like and she made it happen. I thought $28 was a little steep, but considering how much I like my haircut, I've realized that it's money well spent. I mean, I'd rather spend $28 on a great haircut than $12 on one that makes me look like a penis for three weeks and THEN looks human the fourth week. Rarely do I leave a hair salon liking my haircut right away. It usually takes a week before I can judge, but Brooke made it happen. Plus, blue raspberry tootsie pops on the way out? Brooke is awesome. Five stars for her no doubt! I never plan in advance but her haircuts are worth planning for! She consistently does a good job and gives cuts that look good in real life. I've really had only good experiences here, with the exception of one cut by a new person. Even that bad cut they fixed for me asap and I was happy again. They're a little more expensive than what I'd expect for prices in Missoula (why I gave 4 stars instead), but Brooke is consistently the best cut and the only person in Missoula I like to trust with my hair. She cuts my mom's hair too and it's never looked so good:) read more

Wow, Colby, I am so dissapointed!!! Waited so long to get an appointment to have hair colored (high and low lights) and hair cut. I brought a picture in and everything, discussed what the plan was and blending with my natural salt and pepper color so it wasn't so obvious when growing out...ya that wasn't even close to the picture I brought in and what we discussed. I look like I have washed out grey hair, terrible. Then at the end when Colby asked how I liked it I told her I didn't love the color, there was no contrast and she brought light color all the way to roots so now it will be real noticeable when it grows out....not even an apology or ge let me fix this or hey let me discount for not getting what I asked for. I absolutely won't go back or recommend to Nyone. People do make mistakes,, but how you handle those mistakes definitely tell what kind of person you are.. you got paid the full amount so hey why care,, right!!! I can't say enough good things about Amanda! She literally saved the day for my sisters wedding. We were in from out of state and staying at Paws up resort where the wedding was taking place. I was to do hair (as I am a stylist) and Amanda was doing the on site makeup. We were to begin hair and makeup at 1:00 and at 12:30 I fell and broke my wrist and was obviously at the last minute unable to do hair. This is where Amanda stepped in and literally saved the day! She was able to do hair and makeup all of which she did an amazing job at! I honestly can't praise her enough. She is an excellent stylist and makeup artist who works well under pressure. This is the only salon in Missoula I will get my hair cut. The staff is super friendly and always remembers who you are. I have been going here for a little over three years. I tried three different men's hair stylists and discovered Katie is by far the best! If I can't schedule with her I will wait till I can! Refreshments are always available while you wait and during your haircut. I would recommend going in on Saturday mornings or early afternoons as they serve mimosas! read more

It has been about a year since i went in, so feel free to take my review with a grain of salt. First off, it was pretty easy to get an appointment, so that was good. Second, they were ready, when I showed up for the appointment, which doesn't always happen, so that's good. Third, the hostess(receptionist) was great! super personable, and offered me a variety of beverages. :) great! Fourth, my stylist was friendly, and professional. She did a great job on my hair. Laslty, the price for my cut was $25. which i realize is often the going rate, and the stylist was worth it. However, my style is very easy. so for me, i don't require the quality offered...nor the budget for it. I'm writing this on behalf of my roommate who went in and had a bad experience (she's too nice to leave a bad review of anyone). She had an appointment with Amanda. She had her roots died to her natural hair color (brown) that fades to a blonde balayage at the ends. Amanda completely botched up a spot in her hair... The color does not have any remote blending that would make it look natural. It's a hard line (and some random dots) from brown to blonde. The other side looks great and the fade to blonde looks much more natural. My roommate called the salon to get back in and they offered her a few times for correction but they didn't fit with her schedule (we are in school, so between finals and going back to our home states, she is in a bit of a time crunch). She is ending up having to go pay more money at a different salon to correct this. I'm mad for her... this isn't OK. A client who YOU messed up HER hair should be top priority and you should make time for her. I don't recommend this place... sorry Boom Swagger.... read more

Two years later, I'm still going to Kelly and I still consistently get compliments. That woman has never done me wrong and I've even converted my sister to a Boomswagger customer despite the fact she lives in Arizona (she syncs her visits to times when she needs root touch-ups). My man-friend also gets haircuts at this salon (I think he goes to whoever is available) and he's had a long string of great haircuts as well. I've been going here for about 3 years and have gotten average hair cuts except most recently a terrible one. I went in and asked for long layers and this is what I received. One layer, about 4 inches above the bottom layer, right in the middle of the back of my head. As well as the bottom being a little unstraight. If you go, make sure you get one of the older stylists, not the new ones, they seem to do a better job. Also, be sure to see the back of your hair before leaving :) read more

I have seen Abby a few times now and she works magic on my fine, tangly blonde hair. I love the way she does highlights. The first time I got my roots done by her, I was a little terrified because she does horizontal sections without weaving. I was certain I would have a disaster-zone for roots in a few weeks, but it actually ended up being very subtle and dimensional. And the grow-out was not nearly as noticeable as chunky weave highlights. Kudus to Abby for finding a way to do highlights that is faster and gives better results! After reading about Mario's training and his expertise with curly hair, I made an appointment. Mario took his time to listen. He then evaluated the condition of my hair and made suggestions. He worked on my color, gave me a new hair cut, and finished up with a very innovative new look. I was very pleased!. Another plus of the Swagger Salon, is their great location (quiet area away from crowds and with easy nearby parking) Their prices are very competitive, considering that they use high quality salon products. Had the most unfortunate sitting here. Long process. For a simple high lite My hair is now fried. I can't use any hot tools now for fear of breakage. Rather than tell me I shouldn't do a high lite they proceeded anyway. I've had experience in a few salons as I'm from Seattle. Katie is the best! During the year I lived in Missoula, I had a few different styles cut by her, and they all were just perfect. I looked great when I left, was able to pretty consistently style the 'do myself, and got lots of compliments almost every time. I think she totally understood how my hair needed to be cut, what my style was, what I wanted in a haircut, and so on. Also, the boyfriend gets his hair cut by her and it also always looks great. Well, they might give a good haircut but I'll never know. I tried to take my boys in as walk-ins two times with no space and finally made an appointment, letting the attendant know that if we found somewhere else to do the cut that day I'd call to cancel. We did get the boys' cuts at my husband's regular salon, but my daughter was eager to find out about feather extensions and needed the split ends cut off her hair. I also needed a bang trim and a quick whack of the fried ends off my long hair. So we decided to take the boys' appointments which were both in my name anyway. We were told that they could not cut my hair due to lack of scheduled time, but could cut my daughters. I was surprised that they had only scheduled 30 minutes total for 2 kids cuts- my boys' hair had taken an hour the day before at the men's salon without wash or blowout. I explained that my daughter just needed a trim straight across the back and I needed the same with a bang trim. I understood that there would only be 15 minutes for my cut, assured the stylist that we respected her time and did not expect her to go over schedule, and said that I was willing to pay the regular $45 Women's cut price rather than go without a trim before the start of the school year. She said both cuts couldn't be done. She said there was no such thing as trimming a woman's hair. Then she proceeded to wash my daughter's hair 3 times, do the simple cut we requested, and do a blowout. We hadn't even wanted/needed the wash and blowout. The whole process took 13 minutes. We still had another 17 minutes left for the appointment, but they wouldn't give me the same trim. I didn't even want a wash and blowout. They refused to let me use my appt time. I went a few blocks down the street, another stylist spent 15 minutes on my trim, and she made the $45 that Boom Swagger refused. My daughter also got her feather extensions at a salon with better customer service. The interesting thing here is that I was a hair model for Jaazz in Spokane for 3 years and guinea pig for the owner's (Sonna's) every creative whim. I can't cut hair myself, but I knew how long the trim would take. After years of sitting through Jaazz's hair classes, I thought stylists were supposed to listen to their customers to give them what they want- I've had 7 hour hair makeovers at Jaazz but today I REALLY, REALLY wanted a 15 minute trim. Since I've had a couple bad hair experiences in Missoula, I've been driving to Spokane for all my cut and color needs for the last 2 years. I spend $200-300 on services each visit. I went over every 2 months after we first moved to maintain my short cuts and vibrant false colors (which actually need maintenance every 4 weeks), but can't make it that often recently. As a result, my hair is now long and goes through long periods of shameful neglect. I would love to find a local salon that I could trust, but I like to see if a stylist can give a simple trim (it's amazing how many botch it) before trusting them with the normally short, dramatic avant guard cuts and color that are more typical of my style. I also use my family as guinea pigs a few times before letting a stylist do a full cut and style on me ever since Tangles botched a trim (bangs ended up 3/4 in. sparse and spiky; hair ended up 4 inches shorter) last year right before my wedding. Sonna at Jaazz couldn't even do the wedding style we had planned and worked towards for a year. Whenever I see a woman in Missoula with truly exceptional hair, I always ask her who her stylist is. Inevitably, she always gets her hair cut in another town. It's a shame that Boom Swagger didn't even want to try to be my next salon. With good customer service, I'm a very loyal customer. For now, it's back to 400 mile round trip treks for my hair. read more

Fantastic salon! My sister had her whole bridal party come in for up-dos the day of her wedding. I didn't even have a hair appointment, but one of the girls gave up their 20 minute makeup appointment and they somehow squeezed me in for a 45 min hair appointment instead.
