The planners have done a beautiful job making the downtown core pedestrian and shopper friendly with a number of special events throughout the year. Everything from farmer's markets and car shows, to other seasonal celebrations. Ten years ago, I had a wish list for Oregon City. I wish it had x, y, and z. With the influx of new businesses and energy, there aren't many things left on the wish list. During the week there is metered parking, but my visits are mostly on weekends. And Oregon City has a great collection of murals as well as numerous historic sites and buildings, and of course the Municipal Elevator/space saucer. It seemed like the Arch Bridge and downtown renovations took forever, but now the future looks very bright.

It is small enough that you can pay a visit even if you don't have a lot of time. There is a number you can dial to follow along with a audio tour. The info is posted on the wall on the west side of the memorial. The audio tour is part of Oregon's Mt. Hood Heritage Trail series. It is # 9 in the series. Text "hood" to 57682 & followed the link to the mobile site. While I was there, and there was a man lovingly doing some repair work there. He clearly has devotion and dedication to this memorial. He was also kind enough to take a picture of me and my dog with Telnet statue with the three soldiers. War memorials come in all shapes and sizes, but more often than not, it is a small plaque in a city…read morepark. It reduces the experience to facts and figures and while a nice remembrance of those that have fought for their country, it doesn't really make as much of an impression on younger visitors who are far removed from the conflict. I've been intrigued by this particular memorial for years because you just can't miss it as you drive along Highway 99 at the southern end of Canby. A "Huey" medivac helicopter ("Little Orphan Annie") is on it's approach landing just alongside the road. This is the dramatic focal point of the Vietnam Era Veteran's Memorial which is dedicated to the men and women who served in the military (not just Vietnam) between 1959 - 1975. Across the plaza, which is shaped like a "shou" representing long life and longetivity, there is a Buddhist bell with the inscription, "Believe in Peace" in Vietnamese. Approaching the helicopter is the bronze statue, "A Hero's Prayer" which depicts three larger than life-size figures of an American soldier carrying a wounded comrade towards the helicopter while holding the hand of a small child. The statue depicts PFC Gary W. Martini, USMC, Oregon Medal of Honor recipient who was killed in action in Vietnam. The second figure is U.S. Army Spec-4 Warren E. Newton, a Canby soldier listed as Missing in Action in Vietnam. The memorial started taking shape in 2006 and is still well maintained. I particularly like that it focusing on the humanity as well as the heroism of the war experience. If you look down at the plaza, you will see the red cross making the landing spot for the incoming helicopter and bricks covered with names of those who have made the memorial possible.

After driving this stretch of I-5 for more than 4 years, I started to notice a strange brown sign…read moreat the Nyberg exit drawing attention to the "Nyberg Chestnut." What is this strange marker, I wondered. Finally, I decided to look it up and was surprised to learn that this lonely tree straddling I-5 and the Nyberg on-ramp is over 110 years old and was originally part of a large orchard planted by none other than Mr. John Nyberg himself! When I-5 was being built, his home and orchard were located in the highway right-of-way and had to be moved and most of the orchard destroyed. But when a bulldozer came to topple the chestnut, Nyberg stood in front of the tree and stopped the machine. Such a neat bit of history and drama - and I enjoy the quirkiness of it. How many people drive right by the Nyberg Chestnut and either have never noticed it or have no idea of this story - probably almost everyone. I appreciate that a sign was placed at the tree so that everyone can learn the unique Oregon history of this spot.

Our original plan when moving to Oregon didn't include Portland. Not that I didn't like Portland,…read morebut our plan was Eugene until we decided on where we wanted to buy. We were in Eugene for almost a year (which I loved, but never really felt a connection to) when plans changed and I needed to be in Portland. After a LOT of research choosing a place to live in/around Portland for the next year or two, we decided on Sellwood. We needed to be close enough to the airport (which I drive four times a month, meaning four times each way), we wanted to be by the river, wanted something very walkable, and wanted a safe/family type neighborhood. We got everything we wanted, and I felt an instant connection here. We've been here about 5 months and we absolutely love it. We can walk to the amazing riverfront park (and play fetch with my dog at the off leash area), walk to lots of great shops and restaurants, not a bad drive to the airport, it's a quick drive to the coast or the Columbia River Gorge, and about a 6 mile drive to downtown Portland with endless options of things to see and do. My only problem now is I kind of want to stay and not sure if we'll be able to. :-(

Spent four years learning about food, music, outdoor activities, film, and Oregon. Promised myself that one day I'd visit (It was second on my list after Prague). 9 Years Ago: Involuntarily left Cornell (was supposed to have been studying Engineering) and returned to Hawaii. Visited Seattle, fell in love with the Northwest...trees,mountains, and rivers everywhere! 5 Year Ago: Got married to my beautiful better half who loves to travel (and has), but had never lived off our island. 4 Years Ago: Debated moving or traveling...chose the later (finally made it to Europe...and put to rest my weird fixation with Prague) 9 Months Ago: Found out my brother (who lives in Portland) was marrying a Salem girl. Booked tickets to visit ORegon for the reception. Again began discussing leaving our comfortable island lives and maybe moving. 5 Months Ago: Decided we needed to stop talking about and stop looking at www.Johnlscott.com till we actually visited. 3 Months Ago: Finally made it to PDX. When we left HNL we were 80% staying 20% moving (liked our jobs, most of our friends and family lived there, and it's Hawaii). After a little over a week here we were sold on moving to one of the few places in the world where the grass really is greener. Loved the progressive ideas, the food, the culture, the Saturday Market, the charming hoods, and the eclectic people.Decided to wait a week to make our final decision. A week less then 3 Months Ago: Rolled the dice and gave ourselves a two month time frame to move. Two Weeks Ago: Had just finished leaving our jobs, selling our material possessions, and shipping what was left. Went on a Yelp hiatus (13 days is a long time for a Yelper). A Week and a half Ago: Bid Aloha to the Aloha state and Arrrived in Seattle with Madison (our canine dogther ). Just over a week Ago: Picked up tRAVis Blueberry (our RAV4) and drove down here. The last few days: Visited neighborhoods, went to concerts, and spent more money then two jobless people should stocking up at New Seasons, Trader Joes, Target, Costco, Uwajimaya, Ross, and IKEA. Right Now: Writing my first Portland Yelp which has turned into a circuitous, verbose, meandering, somewhat introspective piece that hasn't even gotten to the point yet. Two Weeks from Now: Hopefully working for a non-profit somewhere or at least getting paid to do something fun. Three Months from Now: Hopefully living somewhere in Sellwood, Hawthorne, Alberta, Belmont, or Mississippi (NW23rd is nice too, but too expensive). We spent an afternoon walking up and down SE 13th ave. in Sellwood and were blown away by all the affable dog-friendly outrageously cool shops, restaurants, parks, and people. This place rocks. Anyway, who really knows what'll happen next? 3 months ago Portland was just a pipe dream. Now...we're here (and loving it...and not just cause we're unemployed with time to goof around).
