This place is stunning, a must visit when in Charleston, you get a tractor ride of the farm and a guided tour of the first floor of the mansion included. There is a small cafe on the grounds but it's very limited options feels like a road side market. You will get some amazing photos and learn about the history of this plantation which is just as important. read more

I was meeting a friend in Charleston, but she wasn't arriving until late afternoon. I arrived early and decided to check out Boone Hall Plantation. So glad I did! This 738 acres farm was beautiful! I spent nearly four hours exploring. I stopped by the visitor center after parking and was given a map. This is where you schedule the tour of the main house (not the original). The tour runs every 30 minutes. You can view the first floor and huge patio in the back. It's worth checking out. After exited the house tour I saw a 600 year old tree by the water. Then the staff advised to head to the parting lot and hop on a trailer being pulled by a tractor for a tour of the property and a history lesson. I learned so much and enjoyed the ride. While taking in the visual beautiful I couldn't help but think about its somber beginning. The crops worked by the enslaved started with cotton and indigo (premature deaths due to the urine used in production). Then the crops were switched to pecans. I told you I learned a lot LOL! There were sessions at different times and places throughout the property offering more history. I also enjoyed a stroll through the gardens which were spectacular and in full bloom at the time I visited Memorial Weekend. They also had several enslaved homes to tour as well as one that was used as a church. And the Visitor Center, in the original cotton mill, included a small museum which housed the original cotton gin. There was a cafe with a small menu, snacks and souvenirs. You can truly spend hours. They were setting up a wedding on the house grounds with the reception being held at the Dock House (be sure to check this out too). Weddings are scheduled to start when visitors are leaving. If you're interested in American history and love to explore the outdoors I highly recommend checking out Boone Hall Plantation. read more

Boone Hall offers beautiful grounds, starting with the avenue of oaks upon entry to the property. We spent two hours here, and I feel like we could have spent longer because we did not see everything in that time. The house tour is short and not very extensive, but we really enjoyed the tractor tour. A tractor pulls an open air trolley type car around the grounds where you can see the farmland, ponds, and wildlife (we saw a deer, alligators, turtles, and turkeys). It was interesting to hear the history of the land and crops. You won't want to skip this part. The gardens were very pretty. There were informative talks given by staff, and there were several exhibits in old slave quarters. These exhibits offer insights and history, and it is a lot to take it all in. I recently visited Boone Hall Plantation with friends for the second time, and it was truly a memorable and meaningful experience from start to finish. Another successful event at Boone Hall! The strawberry festival is always a fun day to attend. The price for a small basket of strawberries (as pictured) was $11 for self pick or you could buy a pre-picked basket for $15. The picking of strawberries was more work than I had originally thought, especially if you go after a rainstorm. Rain can really mess up some strawberries and cause a lot to ruin or begin to rot. read more

Honestly, there was another plantation in Charleston I wanted to visit, but they were closed, so Boone Hall came in second. The ticket price was around $40 or possibly less per person, especially with discounts like AAA, senior, or military. The drive in was a bit bumpy, so drive with caution, but we were happy to find parking right away. There were enough staff and signage to guide us easily around. Upon arrival, we first entered a building that serves as an information desk, where we learned about the history of cotton and found a small souvenir shop. The staff member was kind and asked how many in our party, offering helpful suggestions on what to see and do around the plantation. One highlight was the mini play at the Gilded Hall, it was very well done. I wish we had planned to arrive earlier in the day so we could explore more, but overall, it's a lovely spot with rich history and beautiful grounds. I believe this was the 2nd plantation I've visited in my life, the first in Nashville. This was amazing! Here's some quick notes: - Uber can get you there and back from Downtown Charleston. There's a pick up and drop off spot. AAA discount available on tix. - Plan to be there for over 3 hours for the full experience. I skipped about 30% of the property because I was hungry. - on-site small restaurant available & bathrooms - make sure you do the Gullah experience and all the experiences with someone giving you an oral history - I wanted to check out the horses but those were shown every hour on the hour and by the end of the day I was done. I can only imagine being out there in the summer. - take water and snacks in a book bag - wear closed-toe shoes, there's sand and dirt everywhere - knowledgeable guides who don't mind questions - the tracker ride was a nice break from walking around - they host weddings on-site and the wait list is 2.5 years long. Weddings on a plantation always felt icky to me. Be prepared to head about the enslaved people. Don't come if you're intolerant and leave your nonchalant teens at home. read more

The most iconic sight at Boone Hall is the Avenue of Oaks that you will drive down as soon as you enter. You also ride down during the Farm and Nature Tour or via foot as long as you're careful of the cars passing through. The nice thing about Boone Hall is that all the tours and attractions are included in the $30 admission fee, so we started off with the House tour, which is timed. The home is air conditioned, which was much needed during the hot summers. Then we hopped over to the Farm and Nature tour, which is pulled by a tractor. All of the guides were so informational and friendly throwing in some jokes here and there. We spend about 2 hours here, although probably would've spent longer if it wasn't so hot. read more

We had a great time visiting the Plantation. The property is absolutely beautiful. There is a tractor ride tour that is a must do. Stop by the slave houses to better understand what they went through and learn some of the history of the property. The current owner allows you to tour the main house...understand this was not the original plantation house but built in 1936. It is an ok tour (just the downstairs) as the owners still use it as a residence part-time also. There is a small market on site that has sandwiches and drinks along with gifts and snacks available. Plenty of parking and a beautiful drive in through the Avenue of the Oaks. read more

Spent most of our Monday morning visiting the Boone Hall Plantation in Mt Pleasant. We got an Uber from our hotel in Charleston pretty easily. For rideshares, there's a specified pick up and drop-off location which all the drivers seem to know about, that is a good thing. From there, most of your visit is fairly organized. The only thing you have to reserve is visiting the mansion. That timing is effectively set at the Visitor Center. From there, you learn a few things about the plantation and then head straight to the mansion. The mansion visit was pretty educational and also heartwarming at the same time. A bit painful to hear about the history. It's not a long visit though. But from there, you can either head on the tractor ride or visit the historical dwellings. Just keep in mind of the timings as you'll want to visit the Gullah Theater for some history about the Gullah culture. We ended up doing that before going on the Tractor Ride. The Tractor Ride was pretty cool. Had a fun guide and saw a bunch of unique creatures along the way. However, that ended up going a bit longer than we anticipated because our tractor wasn't full. Just keep that in mind in case you want to visit the other performances, especially the one discussing the history of the slaves at the top of the dwellings. All in all, we spent just under 3 hours here. That included about 30 mins for the mansion tour, about 30 mins for the Gullah performance, and another 25-30 mins for the tractor ride. read more

Very well preserved site. Very well run. I like that it's an active farm. presentations on the owners, the Gullah culture, the horse stables and includes a 30 minute tractor tour of the ground operation, including all the fruits and vegetables they have planted. There is also a tour of the mansion, but it is very limited. You can go through the slave housing and each one is dedicated to a topic like arts and crafts and emancipation. This site has 88 oak trees on the drive-in. The cost is $30 a person but we got a map somewhere that gave us three dollars off per person. We were there a good three hours. They also have a little snack bar if you get peckish. read more

Beautiful grounds! The driveway is absolutely breathtaking and so is the house! We started the tour with a wagon ride around the farm it was so beautiful and our tour guide was fantastic. We saw the garden which was amazing it gave me some rustic Alice and Wonderland maze vibes which I loved! After that we toured the smokehouse, cabins, toured the venue and the dock and watched a Gullah performance which was fantastic. I feel like we learned a lot and had a lot of fun exploring. Afterwards, we went to the gift shop and I found some delicious local honey, an adorable snow globe, and of course we couldn't leave without a locally made bracelet for my kiddo! 10/10 would definitely recommend! read more

Gus, our tour guide on the tractor ride was very good, funny but he knows his stuff and he's great at spotting the wildlife: alligators, egrets, turtles, a pink spooner, turkeys, Canadian geese. Nice overall and worth the money. The grounds are beautiful and the experience is put together well. The only real disappointment comes when you learn that the "historic" plantation house, the centerpiece of the visit, was actually built in 1936 by Canadians. It breaks the illusion a bit if you're expecting original architecture. That said, the site handles the subject of slavery with notable care and accuracy. Their treatment of the history is respectful, direct, and informative, and they deserve credit for that. A good visit, just not as authentically historic as I had thought. read more

What a great venue for a wedding. I walked through the gardens which were perfectly maintained. The slave quarters are so well taken care of as well. So much history on this plantation. I picked this plantation to tour because parts of the notebook were filmed here but other than that I'm really glad I picked it. They had original structures on sight with lots of good information about slavery and what happened on the land. Very sad stories but important to be told. We got to tour the house as well. This is still a working farm which I love that they are still using the land for farming. They also have a cafe that served some lunch things and drinks. We spent almost three hours here. They have various tours. We did the house tour and the Gullah tour. I would recommend both. The house was built in the 1930s this is mentioned on their website and should not be a surprise to anyone. The agriculture tour was a dud. It's billed as a working farm but it's mostly just to have items for their farmers market. Although my expectations were probably higher than most having been raised on a row crop farm. The grounds can be explored at your own leisure. In a group of four females in mount pleasant for four days this was the consensus favorite place visited. read more

I was never eager to visit a plantation because of the painful past and history that surround these places. But on a recent visit to Charleston I realized that visiting one might give me a better idea of the past and its history and learn from it (although it seems that we're not very good at that). So Boone Hall Plantation it was, since it's one of the biggest in the area. We visited on a Sunday when they open at 12 pm. Why so late when they usually open at 9 am and close at 5 pm? We arrived early (after our check out) and the place was locked. Tip: If you arrive early, visit the Charles Pinckney National Historic Site that is almost across. It is free, great way to kill time and learn some facts and information that will connect with the guided tours at Boone. Admission price: $28 regular (pricey), $26 for seniors and veterans (didn't get if my in laws got that since the gentleman at entrance was hard to talk to, not very nice). After parking, head to the Visitor Center. They will give info on tours and times to make your schedule. We did the house tour first. Not the original house, so that was disappointing. The tour is short, they cover just a couple of rooms. Movie trivia: "The Notebook" and the series "North and South" were shot here. I enjoyed exploring the gardens, very nice. My favorite: The Gullah Theater in the outdoor amphitheater was the best part. The presentation was moving, fascinating, full of history about the enslaved people, great lesson to learn about the Gullah culture. The lady who gave the presentation was amazing, forceful, strong, engaging. After that we visited the enslaved people quarters near by. Although the owners of plantations got rich stealing their knowledge about inventing indigo and cultivating rice, most of them were sleeping on the fields in some shacks at the best. The brick buildings (small) were hosting the higher ranked ones, servants in the house who were sharing this tiny spaces (7-8 of them in one). Lots to learn here. Sad history to figure out how Charleston rich people became rich. I am glad Boone is a working farm now, we took a tractor tour to see the walnut, peach, etc groves, saw the horses. Now it's a peaceful place, but it holds a cruel history. Tip: You can get as a souvenir a traditional small sweetgrass basket made on the spot in one of the enslaved buildings by a nice Gullah artist cheaper than inside the French Market in Charleston! We were here for about 3 hours. I could have spend more, but we had to leave town. Loved the oak trees at the entrance, tours are engaging, lots to see and learn at Boone! read more

Got to visit on a beautiful spring day: Pluses: -Slave history was interesting and well done -Tour guide was good -The tractor ride through the farm was enjoyable with a great guide from Erie, PA - beautiful home - the crew in the snack shop were quite friendly and served us despite it running right up to closing time. Minuses: - This is NOT a period home. It was built in the 1920s on the sight of period homes. It is a lovely mansion, but there is not much to see. Only 3 primary rooms, and the men's lounge are open to the public - Pricing was steep at $30 per person in my opinion. If you want to see an antebellum property, this is not it. - it's not a tourist trap, but I wouldn't choose it above other historic plantations in the area. You must visit the mansion, see the cabins, and travel around the farm. The guided tours and presentations are nice. We have lived in the area for almost two years and this was our first time touring the Boone Hall Plantation home. Upon arrival on property you are transformed back to the pre civil war area where human rights violations were common place and legal. The property is well maintained and gorgeous, they do a great job of documenting what took place at Boone Hall. The dwellings are maintained and give a ton of historical facts on the living situation of the oppressed individuals. The Mansion itself is gorgeous I would have preferred to tour without the history lesson from the tour guide but they do that to ensure people don't wonder around. Overall it's worth a visit at least once. read more

Boone Hall Plantation is beautiful. The Avenue of Oaks is stunning! It is a working farm which is wonderful. We took the tractor tour which was interesting, the house tour which was informative and then the Gulla presentation which was disappointing. We were in hopes of more history, not a sermon. The woman giving it was nice and all but there just wasn't the history we were hoping for. My biggest complaint is the Butterfly gift shop. We were looking for lunch and got the turkey and cheese sandwich which was good, the strawberry shortcake which was also delicious but really needed a scoop of their ice cream for the price and sweet tea which doesn't come with refills unfortunately especially since tea is cheap. My complaint is the staff that work that shop. Not one of the girls was friendly, not one. Nobody greeted you, smiled or seemed happy to see you. It was a firm, "What can I get for you?" with a scowl on her face. One young woman got our cup of sweet tea and basically slammed/threw it onto the counter and the only thing that kept it from flying off the counter and spilling was the fact that it hit the black wooden beam. Then before we left I walked up to the register, smiled at the young woman standing there and asked nicely if there were refills on the sweet tea and she looked at me as I was an alien, then glared at me and just snapped, "NO!" as if I asked an unreasonable question. Most places give free refills or tea and soda so it's not like I asked for a free meal or something crazy. Do these girls hate their jobs? Is Boone Hall a horrible place to work? I can't imagine that because everyone else we encountered (the woman working the tractor tour area, the woman who gave the tractor tour, the Gulla presenter and the house tour presenter) were all very friendly and seemed happy to be there. Do they work in a hostile work environment? I have no idea but it was a bummer especially after what we spent in there. It's not a cheap at $30 each plus what we spent on food. I'd say a half day is all you need there. I wouldn't go back again as I don't think there is enough to see for a second trip. If there was a tour that gave loads and loads of informative back history, then maybe but that was really lacking. The slave quarters did have quite a bit of history though. read more

The vast expanse of land, the trees, the water, and the old buildings were exploding with the stories of the American Southern past. Originally this wasn't on our itinerary for our Charleston trip, but after seeing all the promotion downtown and pictures about this place I knew we had to visit. This place was beautiful. When driving into the grounds, the drive in was spectacular. The main road is lined with Southern Live Oak trees, it feels like you're driving through a desktop screensaver. We started with the tractor ride, it was informative and nice. It's very impressive how many acres they have and how much land they utilize still. Afterwards we walked around and toured the rest of the grounds. All of the staff were friendly and answered all our questions. There's many things to see and do here for a couple hours. Also The Notebook was filmed here! Boone Hall Plantation is such a picturesque place and very rich in history. I highly recommend this place. read more
